John is exceptionally knowledgeable about history … including mythological history, architecture, and current events. As a university professor he uniquely tied all these concept’s together and delivered in a fashion that made learning fun. As a former Presidential Guard, he provided immense insight into the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unkown Soldier. John made the whole experience more than just memorable.

This tour was excellent! We got to see and learn about parts of Athens that we would not otherwise have seen. Our guide also gave us suggestions on where the best places to eat. Highly recommend tour.
Alex was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. He was very good at explaining and making it interesting. We truly enjoyed our time with him and would highly recommend thos tour.
The tour guide NEVER showed up!!!! Contacting the tour operator was useless. They never responded to the chat.
Makram was a very gracious, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic guide. He clearly knew his stuff, and he introduced us to many interesting neighborhoods we didn’t know about. However, his passion for history and need to share it with us sometimes made him unaware that we were standing in the direct sunlight on an indiscriminate street corner for twenty minutes at a time. Don’t hesitate to interupt him and suggest that you move to the shade or a more interesting location. We were a little drained from information overload and the sun.
Our Guide was most energetic and knowledgeable and walked us round some of the most interesting places: it was a very hot day and he was conscious of our need for protection from the Sun as well. When we stopped and had a drink with him we found his conversation very enjoyable. it was very good and we were privileged to be in the company of a true local. he also added to our experience by emailing us details of some interiors which being Sunday we had been unable to get into.
Markella was an excellent guide! It was Greece’s Independence Day so very busy, but she weaved us through the crowds to show us all the cool historical spots in Plaka. She was knowledgeable with Greek history while weaving in mythology aspects as well. She took us up hills to see little houses outside of Plaka too and Olympic area. Superb!
In accordance with our requests our guide in a enthusiastic way gave us a walking tour with interesting details of both the old and new history of Athens and Greece.
Amazing experience! Markella is an excellent guide! We had a great time! She is able to explain the history and mythology of Greece at the same time, you need to understand both, so that everything makes sense. Also her vibe and recommendations of places to visit and eat are totally worth it! If i were you, i wouldn’t hesitate on doing it.
This was not a mythology tour. Our guide talked almost exclusively about modern Greek history. After two hours of trying to re-direct him back to mythology and seeing only one of the seven stops that were listed on the "what to expect" section, we gave up and cut the tour off. It was a very disappointing (and expensive) way to spend our last day in Athens.
Honestly the tour was a bit awkward and I really think the experience and knowledge is made by having the right tour guide. Unfortunately, ours wasn't great and she didn't know much about mythology at all. I booked the tour for my mythology loving partner and our tour guide didn't tell us any mythology information, I even had to ask her about her favourite God to which she didn't have much to say. We also don't feel like we saw all the things mentioned on the itinerary/potentially went a different route (if we did, they weren't pointed out and we certainly didn't hear about the God's related to that place). There were lots of awkward silences where I was trying to fill by asking about her background and favourite places in Athens. It felt more like a friend of a friend walking you around some nice places with not much information. All in all, I think it is luck of the draw with tour guides - I did not find any reviews mentioning the lady who took us around so not sure if it was her usual tour. In comparison we did a group tour around and up the Acropolis where the guide was energetic, informative and captivating for 20% of the price - this private tour was not worth the price.
Was an extremely interesting tour with an extremely friendly guide! Very good start to my stay here in Athens. Helped me get used to the city.
We booked this tour as we wanted an in-depth tour about Greek mythology. Our tour guide Ioannis was very informative, funny and approachable. Our tour was tailored to our interests and requests. It was great to have a one-on-one tour around the historic city. Ioannis also gave us restaurant recommendations as we walked round the different districts. This was a great way to explore Athens and was the best tour we did on our holiday. We would highly recommend this tour, thank you Ioannis!
Really amazing tour. We got to see places we would never have found without this tour! Our guide was lovely, very knowledgeable and friendly. Well worth doing this! Thank you!
Walking the city center and hearing stories of the Greek myths and legends was a great way to get to know the city. The stories were well told. I recommend this tour if you like myths and want to see some areas that are not just for tourists.
This was one of the best ways to explore the city of Athens! looking at the monuments and learning about their details was amazing, and understanding the reasoning behind the mythology while looking at the origins was eye-opening Ioannis could have made this entire tour just sitting down at a cafe and telling me the amazing stories that he has and I would have been happy! but his approach to exploring the city made this a MUST have experience if you spend any time in Athens.
What a great experience. We decided to do this tour on our last day in Athens as we wanted a more in-depth explanation on Mythology and the history of Greece. Ioannis realised we had been in Athens for a week already so he changed the Itinerary to suit us and to show us some places that we hadn't explored. It was a rainy day and it was a public holiday but Ioannis made sure there was plenty to see and talk about. Ioannis is very kind, patient and funny and we would recommend anyone wanting a few hours of history and be taken to a few hidden local areas and bars to contact him for a tour! Definitely do this in your first couple of days in Athens, however, it was still great and he gave us a really good end to our trip. Thanks so much Ioannis! Jarrad and Hannah (Australia/Singapore).
5 star review on our tripadvisor page; We really enjoyed our tour of Athens with Adriani. Adriani knows the city so well: she took us to all sorts of places that we would never find on our own, and she told us all about the history of the city. Highly recommended! And we totally loved the hot chocolate stop - simply the best hot chocolate we have ever had!
My walking tour of Athens with Leonie was absolutely phenomenal! In just 3 short hours, I saw all the key sites to visit in Athens and felt like I truly had a handle on the city- not only on the 'touristy' parts, but also walking through the back streets and finding hidden gems made me feel like I could be a local myself. Leonie was intelligent, personable, laid back and thorough. I felt like I definitely was able to see everything I should see and learn everything I should learn both about ancient and more modern Greece. The recommendations she offered for the rest of my time in Athens were incredible as well and made for a wonderful first trip to Athens! I would highly recommend this walking tour with Leonie!
My family and I really enjoyed our tour with Lila. She was very friendly and extremely flexible in some challenging circumstances. She was able to adjust the tour to meet our needs. Her stories were interesting and she interacted very well with both of my daughters, one of whom was excited about Greek mythology, but the other, not so much.
It was a very informative and well spent walking tour with Dimitrios on a Xmas morning. He was friendly, very knowledgeable and generous with the sharing... the legends, history and legacies of the ancient Greeks and their Gods were brought to life!! We've learnt a lot during the walking tour... definitely a recommended activity and good value for money... expect some honest and open discourse about how ancient greeks relate to the modern world issues too... if one has the appetite for it!
We did this tour with Troas on our last day. This was the best - saw places you would never see or find - had a lot of discussion and chatting while learning. Troas was superb. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Athens
Ariadni was very knowledeable and had answers to all our questions, be it history, architecture, local food or shopping tips. We visited main sights but also the markets and she introduced us to some typical local restaurants and shops and places with a view that we wouldn't have found on our own. She is totally flexible and we received a wonderful insight into daily life in Athens. I would definitely book Ariadni again! Claudia from Switzerland
Our time with Vicky was truly magical. She is so well-read, full of life and with such a charming demeanour. Her wealth of knowledge really brought the city to life and we were able to piece together so many details which one would otherwise miss when just walking passed at buildings without any context. I'd truly recommend time with Vicky to anyone visiting Athens. Thank you so much, Vicky!
Nikos was welcoming, friendly and professional. We enjoyed our Marathon tour because Nikos was passionate and made an already interesting subject come to life. This was one of the best private tours we have been on. 10/10.
Interesting history on walk abouts in the interesting buildings Walk about the local area of Athens And a great viewing spot of the city
Leoni is a knowledgeable guide, with interesting topics and a very appealing local-knowledge. She gave us a great tour, showed us many fun and interesting things, taking us even to those secret places that only the locals know. We recommend her with absolute confidence, 'cause we are sure that she will take you on a tour, in which you will experience not only the past but also the present of a vibrant Athens :)
Having visited Athens twice before, we opted out of returning to the amazing acropolis area for a walking tour of the city center with its famous university, library and government buildings now surrounded by hip street cafes, restaurants, boutiques and bars. We learned about Greek mythology and philosophers plus got a feel for Athenian modern life as we visited the day market. Our guide was very knowledgeable and hospitable, sharing her passion for the city and pacing the tour perfectly with tastings and comfort stops. It was just what we wanted and travel time well spent!
We had the most wonderful tour in Athens with Ioannis. A perfect ending to our stay in Athens, although I recommend to do a tour with Ioannis at the beginning of a trip to Athens, this way one can visit everything in depth.
We had a very short stay in Athens and decided it would be best to take a guide to get the most out of the few hours we had in the afternoon. We were right as we had a really pleasant and informative walk with Vicky in the historical center. She talked not only about Gods & Myths, but also about history, architecture, city life, etc. Vicky is a really pleasant host and I will definitely recommend her and WithLocals to anyone who would like to put a story next to the unique scenery of Athens! Thank you, Vicky!
We are a family of 5 and we had an excellent morning with Ioannis as our guide on the Gods, Myths and Legends tour. Ioannis was punctual, friendly and has great knowledge of Athens and its history. He connected with our children and told the stories in a way that it was interesting and entertaining for all of us. Then he walked us through the different neighborhoods and showed us markets, restaurants and hidden places that we would not have found ourselves. We enjoyed every minute of the tour.
Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience on this tour. Dimitrios was our guide and we spend 3-1/2 hours walking around Athens hearing more about his political and historical opinions than we did about Greek gods - the entire tour, we heard exactly two myths. I don't mind small talk in between, but I found myself extremely offended when he shared his negative opinions on my country's politics and even went so far as to infer 9/11 was partly an inside job. No matter how you feel on the matter, it is EXTREMELY inappropriate to say these things about someone else's country! I may have been able to look past all that if there had been more stories on myths and gods, but we didn't even get that. My husband and I were extremely bored the entire tour and both of us considered walking off at different points but didn't want to be rude. In hindsight, we should have. The only reason I'm not giving this tour one star is because I contacted Withlocals and they quickly resolved the matter. I do have a bit of a hard time leaving such a bad review because I took three other tours with this same company and they were all fantastic - we just got a terrible tour guide on this one, and I think if we had had a different guide, this would be a different review.
My evening walk tour with Ioannis, was great. I wish I would have done it straight away when I arrived in Athens. Very likely you want to go back to the areas he shows you. You get it all, education on greek mythology and history, good conversations and fun. Ioannis is an exceptional guide.
It was our first time in Athens, so we were looking for a guide who would give us an interesting and knowledgable tour. Fortunately we did our tour on the first day of our stay, as Troas gave us so much information and details, which we could use for the other days. Troas was very engaged, gave us answers on so many questions not only about Greek history but also about todays situation, where to go, where to eat.... She did not care about time and really gave us a perfect introduction. And by the way: Her German is excellent! We thank Troas very much for this tour and her friendly and open style. Whoever is interested to learn something about Athens should definitely book a tour with Troas. Jürgen and Marion
Manos was an excellent guide from start to finish. He made us feel very welcome in Athens and was able to talk about mythology, politics, philosophy and history as an expert. He also really took the time to get to know us. Thanks for the fantastic tour Manos!
We took the Athens Gods, Myths and Legends Tour with Ioannis F., and he did a great job showing us around the city! As soon as we met him, he asked us where we were staying so he could show us the cool stuff in our particular neighborhood and surrounding area. He quizzed us about our nearly non-existent Greek mythology knowledge which was a good laugh. He knew so much and did a good job telling the stories and keeping us entertained. We covered a lot of ground and saw everything historical in the Psyrri and Monastiraki neighborhoods, including some of the up-and-coming areas where the locals drink and hang. Thank you Ioannis for showing us your Athens!
We recommend booking this tour for your first day in Athens, it's a great overview of what you can expect in the city and provides some great, interesting details that you would probably otherwise have missed! We booked as a couple and it was just us and Troas (the guide) on the tour. Troas is an incredible tour guide who was very knowledgeable about the area, its history, the people who lived there etc. She was always happy to answer any questions we had. I never once felt awkward or out of place. Troas took us to the majority of the city's landmarks and was excellent when telling us their story. We ended our tour, however Troas was not done. She then lead us to a restaurant where we could get lunch as she said goodbye. Really had an amazing time and we're so glad we booked this tour.
What an absolute delight this tour was. From start to finish Loannis kept us entertained with a passion and great knowledge of Greek history. He made the tour fly by. Given some of the other tour prices, this is much cheaper by comparison and we were a bit sceptical of what the quality would be. We need not have worried as he blew the other tours that we have done here out of the water. Do yourself a favour and book this tour, you will not be disappointed. Thank you Loannis.
Ioannis is great guide. He speek english very well so anybody can understand. He has great knowledge about various subject's. He Is very flexible and adjust the tour according to its customers needs. He is one of the best guide we havei n our many tours world wide
Loannis is a great narrator and teacher. He described the Greek history and mythology in great detail in in term that we were able to easily understand. He spent more than the allocated time to make sure that we were able to find a good restaurant for dinner. His tour and description nof various neighborhoods of Athens was detailed and comprehensive. I highly recommend him and his tour
Vicky is a born storyteller who was able to weave tales around landmark, building and Plaka while keeping us amused and informed. A wonder filled tour
Vicky was amazing! She was super knowledgeable and just a genuine person to be around. Book your tour with Vicky!
Very knowledgeable and excellent story teller. He customized our tour to accomodate what we had already seen, and took us to many unique hidden gems within the city. Highly recommend this tour while you are in Athens!!
Manos was a great guide. Very friendly yet extremely informative with deep knowledge of mythology and Greek history. Highly recommend him.
Ioannis was a wonderful host and representative for the city of Athens. My husband and I signed up for the Myths, Gods and Legends tour and after meeting with him he was able to alter the itinerary to suit our preferences. We were able to see even more sights than I thought we would have time to go to. We asked questions throughout the day and Ioannis never missed a beat filling us in on all the history. You really felt as though you were just walking around and hanging out with a friend. I would definitely recommend him as your next tour guide!
Vicky was the absolute perfect guide for our Myths & Legends tour in Athens. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed her informative and “non cookie cutter” tour. Highly recommend this tour. Jeff
Ioannis took us for a 4-hour dive in Athens. So interesting to learn a lot about the Greek history and to discover many spots we would never have found on our own. Ioannis is a great teller of tales and certainly knows his way around town. Must do when you’re visiting beautiful Athens.
Manos was a fantastic host. We did the Myths, Gods, and Legends tour with him in the mid-afternoon in September. He was easy to communicate with before the tour when we needed to change the time and arrange where to meet. Manos was extremely well versed in his subject matter and presented the stories and history wonderfully. He made us think too, and was able to draw what we could recall of Greek mythology out of us. A good teacher. He was also attentive to what we needed including finding shade and staying hydrated. His English was excellent. We would not hesitate to recommend that you do a tour with Manos!
Ariadni was our guide for for a 'Gods, Myths and Legends' tour. She was very knowledgeable and knew just where to take us to show connections between the history of ancient Greece, and modern Greece. She was patient with our many questions, and explained things well. We know a lot more now, then we did before the tour. In addition, when we were ready for a coffee break she took us a to a very special place, where they make real Greek coffee (with the grounds in) in a very old style long handled pot which is heated up in hot sand! It was astonishing! Also, the coffee was good. Then, in another connection between old and new, she took us to a busy market, where everything fresh is brought in daily, fruit, vegetables, meat, lots and lots of seafood. I was able to find a vendor who sold fresh figs. He was out for the day, but since Ariadni showed us the market, I was able to go back another day to get fresh figs, fresher and cheaper than at the grocery store. I like fresh figs, and had been looking forward to getting them in Greece.
We had a really wonderful time with Troas. She is a very friendly and knowledgeable lady, who always went the extra mile to show us something new. It was already our 4th day in Athens when we did the tour with her, but we still gained many new and interesting insights. Also, she was really nice with the kids and tried to engage them with the fantastic Greek mythology! Thanks so much Troas, it was great meeting you!
