Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities. It’s recorded history spanning around 3.400 years and it is being inhabited since the 11th millennium B.C. E. Today, under the shadow of the Parthenon, the contemporary urban scenery of the sprawling city reflects its exciting history, its multi-cultural modern personality as well as the infrastructure and facilities. The perfect Mediterranean climate with the legendary greek sunlight, the unique combination of glorious history with modern, urban innovation, the coexistence of great culture with astonishing natural beauty, the high standard hotel accommodation ...
The Propylaea of the Athenian Acropolis was built on the west side of the hill, where the gate of the Mycenaean fortification once stood. The first propylon, or gate, was constructed in the age of Peisistratos (mid-sixth century BC), after the Acropolis had become a sanctuary dedicated to Athena. A new propylon, built-in 510-480 BC, was destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC and repaired after the end of the Persian Wars, during the fortification of the Acropolis by Themistokles and Kimon. The monumental Propylaia admired by modern visitors was part of the great Periclean building program. They have erected in 437-432 BC, after the completion of the Parthenon, by architect Mnesikles. The original building plan was particularly daring both in architectural and artistic terms but was never completed. The pie-shaped building of Pentelic marble frames beautifully the entrance to the sacred precinct. The central section, the propylon proper, had an outer (west) and inner (east) facade...
The temple of Athena Nike stands at the southeast edge of the sacred rock atop a bastion, which in Mycenaean times protected the entrance to the Acropolis. The Classical temple, designed by architect Kallikrates and built-in 426-421 BC, succeeded earlier temples also dedicated to Athena Nike. The first one of these, a mid-sixth century BC wooden temple was destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC. The eschara, the altar believed to have supported the cult statue of the goddess, dates to this period. Under Kimon, c. 468 BC, a small temple of tufa was erected around the base of the statue and a new altar was built outside the temple. The foundations of these early temples and altars are preserved inside the bastion under the floor of the Classical structure. Pausanias (1, 22, 4) refers to this temple as that of the Apteros Nike, or Wingless Victory, and mentions that the cult statue of the goddess had no wings so that she would never leave Athens. Apart from the cult of Athena Nike other...
The Parthenon, dedicated by the Athenians to Athena Parthenos, the patron of their city, is the most magnificent creation of Athenian democracy at the height of its power. It is also the finest monument on the Acropolis in terms of both conception and execution. Built between 447 and 438 BC, as part of the greater Periklean building project, this so-called Periklean Parthenon (Parthenon III) replaced an earlier marble temple (Parthenon II), begun after the victory at the battle of Marathon at approximately 490 BC and destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC. This temple replaced the very first Parthenon (Parthenon I) of c. 570 BC from Periklis . The Parthenon was designed by architects Iktinos and Kallikrates, while the sculptor Pheidias supervised the entire building program and conceived the temple's sculptural decoration and a chryselephantine statue of Athena. The Parthenon is a double peripteral Doric temple with several unique and innovative architectural features.
The elegant building known as the Erechtheion, on the north side of the sacred rock of the Acropolis, was erected in 421-406 BC as a replacement of an earlier temple dedicated to Athena Polias, the so-called "Old temple". The name Erechtheion, mentioned only by Pausanias (1, 26, 5), derives from Erechtheus, the mythical king of Athens, who was worshipped there. The sanctuary also contained the grave of Kekrops and the traces of the dispute between Athena and Poseidon for the possession of the city of Athens. Another door on the south facade of the western temple opened onto the porch of the Karyatides, a pi-shaped structure with six female statues instead of columns to support the roof. Created by Alkamemes or Kallimachos, the statues were later named Karyatides after the young women from Karyes of Laconia who danced in honor of the goddess Artemis. Five of them are in the Acropolis Museum and another in the British Museum; those on the building are casts.
Changing of the Greek Guards; The Presidential Guard is a ceremonial infantry unit that guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Presidential Mansion in Athens, Greece. The unit is distinguished as the last unit of Evzones in the Hellenic Army and is closely associated with the traditional Evzone uniform, which evolved from the clothes worn by the klephts in the Greek War of Independence. The most visible item of this uniform is the fustanella, a kilt-like garment, which has 400 pleats representing the number of years Greece was under Turkish occupation. They are handmade by special craftsmen taking around 80 days to make. In 1868–1914 and 1937–1973 (with interruptions), the guard also included a cavalry company. They guard the grave of the Unknown Soldier represents the common memory of all unknown soldiers killed at war. The changing of the Greek guards occurs every day at the top of the hour.
The history of the impressive building of the Hellenic Parliament is intimately linked to the history of the Modern Greek state. Initially, the building served as the palace of Kings Otto and George I. It became the Parliament and Senate building a hundred years after it was constructed and still houses the Hellenic Parliament today. Through all those years, the building has undergone a series of changes and has been modernized. From 1836 to 1862; After the selection of Otto, Prince of Bavaria, as King of Greece, and the relocation of the Greek capital to Athens, it was decided to erect the palace on Boubounistra Hill. It proved an inspired choice. The chosen location was in the center of the new capital, easily defendable and cool. On February 6th, 1836 the founding stone was laid at the highest eastern point of the city. The ancient quarry of Pentele was the source of marble. King and queen Otto, and Amalia, took up residence on July 25th, 1843.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a war memorial located in Syntagma Square in Athens, in front of the Old Royal Palace. It is a cenotaph dedicated to the Greek soldiers killed during war. It was sculpted between 1930 and 1932 by sculptor Fokion Rok. The tomb is guarded by the Evzones of the Presidential Guard.
The Presidential Mansion is the place to be to see a Changing the Guard ceremony in Athens,Greece. Changing of the Guard ceremonies take place at the Presidential Mansion and at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is off Syntagma Square below the Hellenic Parliament. The Changing the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in particular has become a popular tourist attraction in Athens. The Evzone's, accompanied by a military band march from their barracks, just behind the Parliament Building, along the Vasilissis Sofias Avenue to the Tomb of the Unknown soldier where a ceremonial change of guards takes place every Sunday at 11:00. The Evzone's provides a 24-hour honor guard, with an hourly sentry change, which is carried out in slow motion, that some say is to allow the troops circulation to resume after standing absolutely motionless. Many smiles when they see the pompoms on the boots of the guards in Athens but make no mistake these men are part of an elite light infantry unit..
The Academy of Athens was founded with the Constitutional Decree of March 18th, 1926, as an Academy of Sciences, Humanities, and Fine Arts. The same Decree appointed its first Members, who were all eminent representatives of the scientific, intellectual, and artistic circles of that era.
The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) is a public, self-governed Higher Education Institution, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Research, and Religious Affairs. Inaugurated in 1837, it has been the oldest higher education institution in the Modern Greek state and the first university in the Balkan and Eastern Mediterranean area. Since then it has been an internationally competitive, globally-focused, research-led university.
The National Library forms part of the so-called "Neoclassical Trilogy" of the City of Athens: Academy - University - Library. With a history of over two centuries, containing more than one million books and magazines, and a host of handwritten codices dating from the 9th to the 19th centuries, the National Library of Greece is the custodian of the Greek literary heritage, bridging the past, the present and the future. It was built between 1887 and 1902, based on a study of the Danish architect, Theophile Hansen -brother of Cristian Hansen. Hernest Ziller was the supervising architect who also studied the entrance stairways and the main bookstands. As early as 1858, King Otho had ordered Hansen to make a study for the construction of a Library next to the University, which had already started being built.
The National Historical Museum is permanently housed in the Old Parliament Building at Stadiou Street (Kolokotronis square). The Museum narrates the history of Modern Greece: the period of Ottoman and Latin rule, the Greek War of Independence (1821), the liberation struggles, the creation of an independent state, the political, social, and spiritual development of the Greeks up to the present day. The Old Parliament House is directly connected with Greek history: it was the first permanent base of the Greek National Assembly. The Old Parliament was founded in 1858 by Queen Amalia, upon a design by French architect François Boulanger, in order to house the Parliament and Senate. For 60 years the building on Stadiou Street housed the country’s turbulent political life. In 1935, Parliament moved to the Former Palace on Syntagma Square, where it is still housed today. Today, the Old Parliament is an architectural jewel in the center of Athens.
Syntagma Square has literally been the very heart of Athens ever since the city became the capital of the modern Greek state, and it's the perfect central location for sightseeing. It is located in front of the 19th century Old Royal Palace, housing the Greek Parliament since 1934. With the Greek Parliament building and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier looming over it, it is rich with history and is the place where most major events of the last two centuries have taken place. Its name in Greek means “Constitution Square,” a name granted by Greece’s first modern royal, King Otto, on September 3, 1843, after an uprising of the people. This was a smart political move since the royal palace overlooked the square.
The National Garden of Athens, located behind the Parliament and Syntagma Square, is a green oasis in the heart of the city. The National Garden of Athens is a large green space of over 160.000 square meters adorned with over 500 types of plants and trees from all over the world. Former Royal Gardens; The gardens were designed in 1839 by order of Queen Amalia of the Greeks, but were not open to the public until 1923 when they were renamed “National Garden”. The designer of the gardens, Friedrich Schmidt, traveled all over the world in search of the most beautiful, exotic and unique flora. This task was also granted to the Hellenic Navy.
The ancient Agora of Athens is the best-known example of an ancient Greek agora, located to the northwest of the Acropolis and bounded on the south by the hill of the Areopagus and on the west by the hill known as the Agoraios Kolonos, also called Market Hill. The word "agora" applies to an assembly of people and by extension marks the gathering place. In modern Greek, the term means "marketplace". Just about every ancient and modern city includes a place for an agora, and the Agora of Athens is located at the heart of the city, remaining in use either as an assembly, as a commercial, or as a residential area for about 5000 years. Consequently, the area has undergone countless building, destruction, and rebuilding cycles. Today these strata of history have been distilled through excavations to expose the Agora's important functions from Archaic to Greco-Roman and Byzantine times.
The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. The architectural competition was held in 2000, which led to the selection of the proposal by Bernard Tschumi and his Greek collaborator Michael Photiades. The new Acropolis Museum was constructed on the south side of the Acropolis at a distance of 300 meters from its monuments. The Museum’s foundations were completed on the 30th of January 2004 and its opening took place on the 20th of June 2009.
In the shadow of the Acropolis and its ancient temples, hillside Plaka has a village feel, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops selling jewelry, clothes, and local ceramics. Sidewalk cafes and family-run tavernas stay open until late. Nearby, the whitewashed homes of the Anafiotika neighborhood give the small enclave a Greek-island vibe. Visiting the Plaka district in Athens is an experience that stays with travelers for a lifetime. With its colorful neoclassic buildings and ruins waiting to be discovered around every corner, there is so much to be discovered in Plaka. Plaka is appropriately known as the “Neighborhood of the Gods.” It lies beneath the northeastern slope of the Acropolis and stretches almost all the way to Syntagma Square, in a maze of winding narrow streets laced with shops and dotted with antiquities throughout. Truly, this is one of the most charming and elegant neighborhoods you will encounter anywhere on Earth. Free time for lunch (not included).
Located in southern Athens, between the Acropolis and the Ilissos river, the Olympeion was the sanctuary of Olympian Zeus. Here stands one of the greatest ancient temples of Zeus and, according to Vitruvius, one of the most famous marble buildings ever constructed. The sanctuary's foundation is attributed to the mythical Deukalion. The site also comprises the temple of Apollo Delphinios - the sanctuary of Apollo Delphinios was traditionally associated with Theseus - and a tripartite building with a south courtyard of ca. 500 BC. The latter has been identified as the Delphinion Court, which was allegedly founded by Aegeas.
Admire the Kallimarmaro stadium, else Panathenaea stadium where here the first modern Olympic games took place in 1896. It is called Kallimarmaro because is all made of marble. A special marble called the Pentelic marble. Special because it changes color according to the day light. Cool with in the morning and in the afternoon it changes color to bone gold color. The monuments on the Acropolis and the temple of Zeus are made of the same Pendelikon marble.
Mount Lycabettus is the highest point in central Athens, Greece. Known in Greek as Lykavitos Hill, it stands 277 m (909 feet) above sea level, providing spectacular views of the Greek capital and the coastline. The hill is one of the largest green areas in central Athens, located close to the Kolonaki and Exarchia areas. Many Athenians come here for a stroll and go to the top to enjoy the city from above. Lycabettus hill is accessible on foot, by funicular railway, and by car. Thousands of tourists visit every year to climb to the top, see the small chapel of Saint George, and enjoy the cityscape from above. Today Lycabettus hill is a fantastic place to go if you want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The peace and quiet are so different from Kolonaki and Exarchia areas right below and the crowded market streets of Monastiraki and Psiri. Sunset is a popular time to visit, and you can take some of the best photos of Athens from above.

We had a wonderful experience with Athens Tours Greece during our three days in Athens. From our very first enquiry to the final day, everything was smooth, well-organised, and handled with a high level of professionalism. The vehicle provided was excellent—new, clean, comfortable, and especially appreciated on our first and third days. Our driver was friendly, patient, and professional, and made our sightseeing even more enjoyable by sharing useful and interesting information about the places we visited. We truly appreciated the excellent service and attention to detail throughout our trip. We would strongly recommend Athens Tours Greece to anyone looking for a reliable, professional, and comfortable way to explore Athens. Thank you for making our time in Athens such a pleasant and memorable experience!
We arrived on a cruise ship so we limited on time. This was the only way we could have seen all that we did. Our trip leader was fantastic.
After disembarking in Piraeus after a one week cruise, we wanted to see Athens without the hassle of riding in a bus waiting for tour participants to arrive, sit down, get out, and repeat at each stop all while barely seeing anything. With this in mind, I decided to book a private tour with Athens Tours Greece which turned out to be an excellent idea. Sure it costs more than a traditional tour, but there were no regrets of , "I wish I could have seen this or that." We met up with our awesome driver Spyros at the port. After loading up our luggage, he drove along the coast line and told us about all of the sites and stopping at places for photos. Once arriving in Athens, he took us to the major sites and for those we wanted to spend more time seeing, he provided us with his number so we could text him when we were ready to move to the next location. Unlike large group tours, we were able to see things at our own pace spending more time at those attractions which we were more interested in and not having to wait on stragglers. It was a wonderful, informative and relaxing way to see Athens.
This was our first time traveling abroad and I cannot say enough about how amazing this tour was! Our driver,Alex, was so knowledgeable about all things on the tour. He truly made the experience above and beyond. Every place we went we were there before the mass tour buses came so we could experience the places with minimal crowds. He tailored or day to our schedule, meaning we saw everything that was planned but he did not rush our time in any place. I highly recommended using this company for your trip, and we will 100% use them again!
Michael was an excellent tour guide. We were on a cruise ship and booked the tour through Viator. We took the 7 hour tour and saw all the main attractions, even some non-tourist spots that were great. There were 3 couples in our party, all family members and we absolutely loved the Greek food at a local restaurant, 5F, where we stopped for lunch. Michael was informative and fun. We all highly recommend him and the company. His promptness on our pickup time and return time were much appreciated.
We had such an awesome experience with Athens Tours Greece! Our tour guide was fantastic — knowledgeable, friendly, and made the day so much fun. We got to see all the must-see sights in just one day, which was perfect for our trip. Highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to explore the highlights of Athens in a short amount of time!
This tour worked perfectly in conjunction with the start of our cruise, which was leaving out of the Piraeus port. Toti (sp) was our driver for the tour, and she did a great job of arranging all portions of the tour - where we went, when we went, and how long we would stay at each destination. She was an interesting person to speak with, and we learned quite about the Athens area and daily life in Greece. We chose the higher-priced option for the tour, and I'm glad we did as admission fees and lunch were therefore included. We particularly appreciated arriving at the Acropolis early so we could beat the crowds. In addition to the morning light enhancing the views, we didn't have to fight our way thru the crowds that we experienced on the way down from the Acropolis. The restaurant chosen for lunch was an outstanding choice, with the owner bringing us a large variety of sharing plates to sample. This approach, versus ordering one entree apiece, allowed us to try a number of excellent dishes. At the end of the day we were dropped at our cruise ship with plenty of time to spare. Overall it was a great day. We saw many of the sights in Athens, our arrival times at the various locations allowed us to avoid crowds for the most part, and we had a delicious lunch of Greek specialty dishes. We never felt rushed. Thanks, Toti, for a great day - you're an excellent guide!
Athens is a magical city full of history. The people are friendly and caring. Our guide Castos was a retired profession who patiently shared the wonderful story of the historic buildings as well as the culture of the people of Greece.
This was a fantastic tour particularly for those who have not been to Athens before and it is a great way to get to see as many points of interest as you can in one day. Dimitra was our guide and she was very skilled in her knowledge as well as very friendly. Toti was our driver and very knowledgeable and friendly herself as well as a very skilled driver going through the streets of Athens. We were happy to have them lead us through the city. We were able to see many more landmarks than we could have expected and the included lunch was amazing. The intimacy of having a private tour was also great as we didn’t feel rushed or crowded. Highly recommend!
We did a whole day private tour with Mikael. He was friendly and very knowledgeable, not only about ancient Athens, but about contemporary Athens as well. We covered a lot of ground in 7.5 hours! It was great having tickets already purchased so we didn't have to wait in any long lines. He also brought us to a great restaurant for lunch... Different from all of the tavernas we had been going to. It wasn't cheap, but it was well worth what we paid.
First off, my husband booked the incorrect date by a week so this company could have chosen to not accommodate us, but not only did they work with us to be able to still go, they busted their butts to make sure we enjoyed the experience while also still valuing their employees who came in to do our unexpected tour. That says a lot about a company! We had two drivers to accommodate our last minute tour on their schedule, and both drivers were great but for different reasons. Both were natives and extremely knowledgeable of the landmarks and areas we visited. The second driver was hilarious and made the drive from place to place a fun experience l, while our morning driver was more extroverted so he would share more freely without us asking questions we didn’t really know to ask. The stops on the tours were a perfect introduction to Athens, but despite driving from place to place, we were exhausted so giving ourselves a day to work off the jet lag prior to doing the tour was a good decision on our part. You get to walk a lot so we would have been hurting had we done it the day after our US 10hr flight into Athens. The 2 things we didn’t realize is they do not go into the landmarks with you so when we got there, we were left to figure out if we were going to rent the automated headphone tour, read every sign along the way, or listen to other people’s tour guides (strong frowned upon and they have NO SHANE telling you to move along if you’re not part of their group). The only one we really wished we would have had a tour guide was in the Acropolis Museum. Getting into each location was a breeze as long as you didn’t follow everyone else in line like humans usually do. Since we had tickets already, we went around majority of the lines of people who were waiting to purchase/acquire their tickets and got to the front. The Acropolis Museum was far too big to cover in the 90 min they give because we are big museum people, so we went back after our tour concluded and used previous tickets for re-entry. I am not sure if all the places allowed for re-entry but that was a perk to this company’s tickets. Lunch was phenomenal- our driver took us to his home town and fav restaurant called The 3 (or was it 5) F’s or something close to that. We sat outside and they brought us about 7-8 main dishes to all try. It was so cool to try food popular in Greek culture, but since they picked all the options we were able to try foods we never would have even considered that were YUMMY. If you are a vegetarian, you need to let the company know ahead of time to tell the restaurant. Our group all agreed, this was definitely worth the price and yes, they appreciate being tipped despite what you read online!
ACROPOLIS TOUR. Tour guid was exceptional. Very well organized and informed. Enjoyed the day very much.
In September we chose this tour company for our extra day in Athens after our Greek Isles Cruise. This company goes above and beyond to accommodate you! We arrived at our hotel early so I texted to see if they could come earlier. No problem. Our driver Demetrius was amazing. He was very knowledgeable and took us to all the attractions, had our tickets for each one and waited for us with the air running in the decked out Mercedes van. He had water for us and even did a few impromptu stops for us. The lunch that is included with this tour was the best Greek food of our entire trip. It is small family owned restaurant and we still talk about how wonderful it was. We would never have been able to take in Athens and see all we did without this wonderful tour. I would use them again without question.
We came from Canada for 3.5 weeks to Greece. Arrived in Athens and had 2 days to explore before heading out for island hopping. We chose Athens Tours Greece to book the "Revolutionary 8-hour The Best of Athens Private Tour". It was an excellent day of sight-seeing, information and covered everything we wished to see (Acropolis Parthenon, Propilyea, Dionysus Theatre, Odeon Theatre, Erechthion, Areopagus, Greek Agora/Roman Agora, Hadrian's Arch, Temple of Zeus, the Panathenean Stadium, where we requested a stop to go inside where the first modern Olympic games were held in 1896, changing of the guards ceremony at the Parliament building, driving through Syntagma Square, driving by the Academy of Arts, the University of Athens, the National Library, Lycabettus Hill, etc). From start to finish, all the customer service representatives were professional, eager to answer any questions, very prompt with replies by email and a pleasure to engage with Thank-you so much for all your help Demetra, Asimina, and Danai you are the best! Everything was taken care of with respect to tickets for the Acropolis, including our request to book a private, licensed guide for 2 hours at the site (Ioanna was fantastic), tickets to the Acropolis Museum, etc. This tour was really well put together and we did not feel rushed at all, even though there was lots to cover. It gave us a good feel for the history and city, so that we could go back to areas and do more exploring on our own another day. Our driver, Fotis, was really knowledgeable, friendly and he drove us to an amazing taverna for lunch that he recommended - the food was incredibly delicious - we took his suggestion of trying the mezedhes - various plates/appetizers of Greek foods - fava, giant beans, pork meatballs, beef, etc. It was one of the best meals of our entire trip! I highly recommend booking services with Athens Tours Greece. We came home with fantastic pictures and memories of our time in Athens thanks to everyone!
Our group of six friends thoroughly enjoyed our full day private tour of Athens and Corinth thanks largely to our excellent driver & tour guide, Andreas. Andreas is so patient and friendly, a true proud Athenian. He is knowledgeable about the region, and he took the time to answer our questions about the sites that we visited. I will recommend this tour to my family and friends, and I will encourage them to specifically request for Andreas' service if he is available to accompany them.
This was one of the ports of call on our cruise itinerary that we were most looking forward to, and this tour exceeded our expectations! George, our tour guide, was fantastic. We traveled as a family of 6, so a private tour was a good option for us. He made sure that we made it to our attraction ticket times (such as for the Parthenon, Parthenon museum, etc.) and took us to as many places as possible with the amount of time we had. We saw so many sights, and George did a great job explaining all of the different stops and history of Athens. We definitely learned a lot on this tour, and will definitely recommend this to anyone who only has a day in Athens! Thank you, George!
The trip was outstanding! Our driver Andreas was amazing! He was everything we’d hoped for and more. Knowledgeable, friendly, punctual, responsive. He also referred a perfect restaurant for us to go and try home cooked authentic Greek dishes. It was wonderful as well. Iur son is vegan and he made sure to let the cooks know and they provided delightful dishes we all enjoyed. I can not say enough good things about him. The entire company as a whole was great to work with. They communicated timely and gave great advice on how to make the best of our trip. Like what tickets to buy in advance to ensure we were able to see the sites we wanted and not have to wait in lines! This is a great tour and I highly recommend Andreas and Athens Shore Excursions. In addition, the Mercedes Van he picked us up in was just as advertised. Very nice! A memorable time we will never forget!! A Heartfelt Thank You Andreas and Athens Shore Excursions!!
We had a wonderful tour in Athens with Alex our guide. He was very knowledgeable and fun.the kids enjoyed the tour.
We had a 6 -8 hour tour of the historical city with the guide Mikiele (Mike) who was very knowledgeable and gave us a lot of information in a short period of time highly recommend for people who want to enjoy the trip the Athens in a short time
Only had a couple of days in Athens and this 8-hour tour with (additional cost) attraction tickets was PERFECT. Michael, our tour guide, was prompt, personable and very knowledgeable. Introduced me to freddo espresso/cappuccino and a local, family style, deli (like), off beaten path restaurant that was AMAZING with small plates of all the offerings, so you had the full local food experience. Sorry I can not recall the name as they deserve a shout out too. Saw and experienced many amazing sites and Michael even accommodated our request for side trip to see seaside and still arrived back at hotel at allotted time. I am sure all their tours are spectacular but for us being in Athens for such a short time this was PERFECT!
We had a great experience exploring Athens! Our driver Andres picked us up on time, was even early, to start our day. He took us to a small cafe with delicious coffee and pastries. This was more of a group-guided tour where your driver will bring you to the spots listed and you are able to explore them with your group. He remained close and you were able to message him if you needed to end your time earlier than planned. Our driver also took us to a family-style Greek restaurant which had the BEST food (Ta 5). The tickets to the museums are not included and this is a price that you can pay TripAdvisor for an extra fee. It’s vital to purchase these tickets before you go because the lines get long and you might not be able to get in if you don’t ahead of time.
Our driver/guide Ανδρέας (Andreas) was kind enough to accommodate our requests (restaurant recommendations, quick side trips/errands). He gladly gave details about each of our stops. He planned out each place according to what we wish to see, and when we want to do it, within reasonable limits, of course. He is a skilled driver and courteous guide. I definitely recommend this option especially if you are traveling with seniors or those with limited mobility, and if the weather/temperature is unforgiving.
Our day trip was wonderful. We saw so many things we would never have seen in 1-day. Our driver, Micheal was so kind and knowledgeable. He was very flexible. Well worth the money!
Superbly planned, scheduled and completed. The itinerary was well coordinated, with maximum time at sites. Hotels chosen were excellent in terms of location , facilities and hospitality. Not one call was needed to M/ S Athens tours for anything. We visited all the tourist spots listed in our itinerary to our satisfaction. Most tourist attractions, museum tickets were bought in advance saving us an enormous amount of time. Even the cruise to Hydra, Porous and Aegina went exceedingly well despite our apprehension with precisely planned drop and pickup. Our last day drop to our hotel also was very kindly delayed to suit our requirement. The best part was our tour guide and driver/ Captain Mr George. A fountain of information on all the sites, kept us enthralled with his wit and knowledge on all topics under the Sun. A big thank you M/S Athens tours for making our trip to memorable. We definitely look up to you for another one this summer . We highly Recommend Athens tours for any Hellenic tour package .
A brilliant tour with our excellent guide George. The tour was well paced and George gave us sufficient time to take in the beautiful sights in Athens. We also had a very interesting journey along the stunning coast to visit the Corinth Canal and Ancient Corinth. George was very informative and great company. We really enjoyed our day with him and would highly recommend this tour
Not only did we get to see and visit a lot of Athens but George took us to special local place for lunch. The food was amazing and reasonable.
We visited Parthenon, Acropolis, Temple of Zeus/Hadrian's Arch, Acropolis Museum, and Roman Agora. The tour worked well. Van was comfortable van and timely. Please note this is not a guided tour, though. The driver takes you to the places and you visit them on your own.
The driver was great. The only negative was that once we arrived at the sites it was self directed With No tour guide
Absolutely fabulous tour. Collected on time in very comfortable car, knowledgeable and friendly guide, nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend.
We were picked up at the cruise port by Theodor who greeted us warmly. He then gave us a thorough background to the history of Greece and Athens in particular. We had arranged for a schedule in advance that would balance learning some ancient history, see famous sites and wander around town. Theodor adjusted the schedule wisely to avoid traffic and maximize our time out of the well air conditioned car. We highly recommend this firm and the guide that we had!
My guide, Panayotis (aka “Peter”) was absolutely delightful. He was well-versed in the history of Athens, and was most accommodating to any request I made. I would highly recommend using him whenever you are in the Athens area.
The van was very confortable. The professionals (driver and tour guide) were very polite and on time. The company managed a portuguese speaking tour guide, Dario, that was excellent. He explained everything very well and it was very patient with our 10 people group. Besides, the questions that we had previoulsly the tour were quickly answered by email by Demetra, that tried to accommodate all our needs.
Our driver Alexander communicated with us well. Time changed due to the heat wave as outdoor locations were closing early. He picked us up at the cruise terminal and helped my mom w/ her walker (and the car was clean, nice, and air conditioned!). We went by the best highlights of Athens! We were able to enjoy the museum at our own place, communicating with Alexander via WhatsApp. Then he dropped us off at our hotel. I highly recommend this tour!
We thoroughly enjoyed our all day tour. It was nice to be picked up and dropped off at our hotel and also picked up and dropped off at each location. We learned interesting facts and had a wonderful lunch. We didn’t have to worry about parking or traffic as we were able to sit back and relax. To top it off we had Theodore who was AWESOME! If you are able to request him you will not be disappointed. Thank you for a great day!
Our guide was Peter and I would highly recommend selecting him for any tour! He really knew the history and how to navigate the city and the crowds so that we could see the absolute most of his beautiful city. We all felt like he gave us the perfect day in Athens. He took us to a wonderful restaurant for lunch and we convinced him to eat with us where we learned even more of Athens. We received personal attention and care. Perfect day!
Theo our driver from Athens Tours Greece was very timey, when he picked our group at the cruise port. He spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable, as he showed us the various sites in Athens. He dropped us at each location and returned to pick us up at the agreed times. Theo was friendly, easy to talk to and courteous, he was enthusiastic and passionate about his job. The minivan supplied by Athens Tours Greece was very clean and comfortable. You felt safe, and it made sight seeing Athens on a hot day very comfortable. I also must add that the communication from the entire Athens Tours Greece Team was very good throughout the process.
Driver was very flexible, we went to the Acropolis first, the line was way too long, so we called him and he came back and took us to the museum. We ask to try again after to see the Parthenon, he took us back and we breezed right in. We saw most of the tour after but ask him to cut out some things he had planned and he was totally accommodating. Van can be warm at times, but he had lots of water available for us.
Alexander was a wonderful guide, very knowledgeable about Athens history. We had a delicious Greek family style lunch .
We booked the "Revolutionary 8-Hour Best of Athens Private Tour" and took the tour in May of 2023. Our driver, Panagiotis, salvaged what began as a Twilight Zone experience. Our English speaking tour guide had an emergency and a backup guide was arranged prior to our arrival. The backup did not meet us at the port and requested that we travel 30 minutes in the wrong direction to pick her up (which would have eliminated 1 hour from our tour). Panagiotis convinced her to take a cab to the Acropolis. Our guide was from Slovakia and her English was very difficult to understand. According to Panagiotis, her Greek wasn't any better. She informed Panagiotis that we would meet up with him again in 4 hours and Panagiotis looked confused... I assumed this timeline was a mistake as our entire tour was only 8 hours in length. We quickly learned that the guide was more interested in giving history lessons, in broken English on the slope of the Acropolis, than actually allowing us to see and experience the top of the monument. About 90 minutes into the excursion, we explained that we had limited time and wanted to see as much of Athens as possible and to please abbreviate the history lessons. We explained we loved the Acropolis, but we didn't want to spend 4 hours there. The tour of the Acropolis museum did not get any better and at the conclusion of the frustrating tour, we informed the guide that we would be parting ways for the rest of the day as soon as we reconnected with the driver (Panagiotis). The guide became argumentative and sabotaged our ability to find the driver. We wasted another hour of our excursion before Panagiotis could rescue us. The guide was paid her full fee and sent on her way. Panagiotis apologized profusely for what had happened and informed us that management wanted to refund us 60 euros of the 170 euros that we paid for the guide. Panagiotis did his very best to make up for lost time, but the damage had already been done. We could only drive by Zeus' Temple, Hadrian's Gate, and other hot spots. We only had enough time left for 20 minutes at the Panathenean Stadium, and 15 minutes on Lycabettus Hill before heading to Plakka. We had about an hour to explore Plakka before we jumped back in with Panagiotis for our ride back to the port. This tour had sooooo much potential and our expectations and excitement going into the tour were dashed due to an unbelievably bad tour guide. We were told the company would not use this guide again, so consider yourselves lucky that this won't happen to you. If not for Panagiotis, we would have rated this overall experience lower. Thank you Panagiotis!!
This was a wonderful experience. We were provided with the larger bus so plenty of room for the six of us to relax in. Maria was a very knowledgeable guide. John took us to a great local place for lunch that was unbelievable. The plates of food just kept coming. Definitely recommend this trip.
We were surprised when we were dropped off at the Acropolis and told we had 2 hours to do the tour on our own. After that we really enjoyed the tour. We went to places that we would not have been able to reach on our own and also learned at each stop. Had lunch at a very local restaurant, delicious food and inexpensive. All in all a nice way to see a lot of Athens in one day.
Amazing experience!! We were a group of 7 and our tour guide was Peter. He was so great, he was very friendly and gave us background information on all the places we visited. He was patient and showed us around with no rush, he took us to an authentic greek restaurant. It was all a great experience. We really appreciated his help and kindness throughout the entire tour. Highly recommend!
George was a great driver and tour guide. The key to this tour is that they will absolutely customize it to meet your needs but you need to ask and it would be a good idea to have some idea what your j treats are before the start. Check the itinerary and know that they will be flexible. We were able to change the order doing the museum at the end since it was right near hour hotel and adding in a stop at a museum that was not on the original tour. The car was very comfortable and George was able to show us all around Athens and knew all of the great spots for lovely picture. Highly recommend.
JUST AMAZING! First of all, the communication via email with Asimina and Danai, was absolutely prompt and always kind! Ladies helped us with everything. Our tour driver was just amazing. so kind and informative! We learn so much about the history of Athena and Greece and we absolutely looking forward to COME AGAIN TO YOU GUYS! Thank you for everything! (We also did an amazing tour of Mykonos)
Niko was awesome! Very informative and excited. Took us to amazing places. Would do again! Loved it!
We just spent a days with our driver George in Athens! Athens Tours Greece team and George was reliable, dependable, brilliant, knowledgeable, and helpful ! He drove us all through Athens to see the most important ancient sights, but also old and modern Athens! Picked us up in the morning at our hotel in a timely manner with explicit directions to arrive before the many tourists buses! George knows quaint interesting places to eat ! We had a delicious lunch at a quaint wonderful place! Book with Athens Tours Greece early! George is a treasure!
This tour was excellent. Our guide was fantastic and his van was clean and spacious enough for 4 people and our luggage. He was quite knowledgeable of the highlights and took us to a quaint small Greek restaurant that served authentic Greek cuisine.
Our tour was excellent! Our guide, Apostolos, was an expert on all things Athens. He was accommodating and personalized everything for us. He knew what time to get to certain places and explained in great detail all of the sights. He took photos of us. He also took us to a wonderful restaurant for lunch where we tried all sorts of Greek food. It was just an outstanding day. Highly recommend.
