Itinerary
Nestled within the modern cityscape, this archaeological site reveals a fascinating fragment of the Sacred Way (Iera Odos), the ancient road that connected Athens to the sanctuary of Eleusis. Just beyond the city’s ancient walls, the Kifisos River marked a crucial crossing point, where an arched stone bridge once stood. Discovered during the construction of the Eleonas Metro Station, the remnants of the bridge include three surviving piers, indicating a structure with at least five arches. This historical crossing not only served as a vital link for trade and travel but also played a significant role in the Eleusinian processions, as thousands of pilgrims passed here on their sacred journey. Today, the site stands as a testament to the engineering and spiritual significance of ancient Greece, offering a rare opportunity to witness a part of the legendary route that once echoed with the footsteps of worshippers and philosophers alike.
The Ancient Sacred Way (Iera Odos) in Aigaleo is one of the most historically significant routes of antiquity, connecting Athens to the sacred city of Eleusis. This ancient road was the path taken by pilgrims during the Eleusinian Mysteries, one of the most revered religious festivals of the ancient world. As you walk along the remnants of the Sacred Way, you’ll traverse the same path where ancient Athenians carried sacred objects, sang hymns, and celebrated the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone. The road passes through the Aigaleo area, offering views of the landscape once associated with myth and ritual. Discover the history and significance of this sacred route, where every step resonates with stories of devotion, mystery, and celebration. Experience the connection between Athens and Eleusis, and immerse yourself in the journey that symbolized renewal, hope, and the cycle of life.
The Monastery of Daphni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands along the ancient Sacred Way (Iera Odos), the historic route connecting Athens to Eleusis, the center of the Eleusinian Mysteries. Built in the 11th century, this remarkable example of Byzantine art and architecture is renowned for its exquisite mosaics, including the awe-inspiring depiction of Christ Pantocrator in the dome. Surrounded by ancient cypress trees and steeped in history, the monastery offers a serene escape, blending spirituality, artistry, and a connection to the sacred traditions of ancient Greece.
The Sanctuary of Aphrodite in Skaramagkas, located near the ancient Sacred Way (Iera Odos), was an important site of worship dedicated to the goddess of love and beauty. Nestled in the lush landscapes of the region, it served as a key point for ancient pilgrims traveling from Athens to Eleusis during the Eleusinian Mysteries. While today only remnants of the sanctuary can be seen, they still offer a captivating glimpse into the religious practices and architectural achievements of ancient Greece. Visitors can enjoy the serene natural surroundings and the sense of history that permeates the site. The sanctuary is open to the public on weekends, allowing visitors to enter and explore its historic remains. On weekdays, while access to the interior is not permitted, we make a brief stop to admire the site from the outside, offering excellent opportunities to take photos and appreciate its historical significance.
Just one kilometer east of the Sanctuary of Demeter in Eleusis, you'll find a remarkably well-preserved ancient Roman bridge. Built from durable Piraeus limestone, it measures 50 meters in length and 5.30 meters in width. The bridge features a central section with four arches—two wider in the middle and two narrower at the ends—along with inclined approaches on both sides. Dating back to Emperor Hadrian's reign in 125 AD, this bridge showcases exceptional Roman engineering and played a crucial role in connecting the Sacred Way with the Eleusinian Kephisos River. It's a perfect stop to admire ancient craftsmanship and immerse yourself in the history of Eleusis.
The Archaeological Site of Eleusis, situated near Athens, is one of the most remarkable landmarks of ancient Greece. Renowned for its connection to the Eleusinian Mysteries, this sacred place was central to religious rituals honoring the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone. Wander through ancient ruins steeped in mythology and history, from grand gateways to intricately carved remnants of temples and altars. The site's peaceful ambiance, framed by rolling hills and views of the Saronic Gulf, adds to the enchanting experience of exploring this historical treasure. Every corner of Eleusis tells a story of devotion, spirituality, and the enduring legacy of one of the most profound cults of antiquity. Uncover the timeless mysteries that made Eleusis a beacon of ancient culture, inspiring awe and reverence for generations.
The Telesterion was the grand hall at the heart of the Eleusinian Mysteries, a sacred ritual honoring Demeter and Persephone. This monumental structure, surrounded by impressive walls and sacred precincts, hosted the initiation ceremonies of one of the most revered cults of antiquity. Its unique design and rich history make it a key highlight for visitors to the Archaeological Site of Eleusis, providing a glimpse into the mystical traditions of ancient Greece.
The Great Propylaea of Eleusis served as the monumental entrance to the Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone, where the sacred Eleusinian Mysteries took place. Built in the 2nd century CE under Emperor Marcus Aurelius, this grand gateway mirrored the Propylaea of the Acropolis, symbolizing the transition from the mortal world to the divine. Its impressive Doric columns and massive stone structure once welcomed initiates seeking enlightenment and a deeper connection to the afterlife. Today, its ruins stand as a powerful reminder of one of ancient Greece’s most revered religious traditions.
The Kallichoron Well, located in Eleusis, holds a significant place in Greek mythology and the Eleusinian Mysteries. According to ancient tradition, this is the spot where the goddess Demeter rested while searching for her daughter, Persephone, after her abduction by Hades. The well's name, meaning "well of the beautiful dances," reflects the myth that the local women danced there to comfort the grieving goddess. Today, the Kallichoron Well is a symbolic site, connecting visitors to the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of ancient Greece.
The Ploutonion Cave in Eleusis is a sacred site dedicated to Hades (Plouton), believed to be the mythical entrance to the Underworld. Nestled within the rocky sanctuary, this mystical cave symbolizes the descent of Persephone and played a central role in the Eleusinian Mysteries. A must-see for history and mythology enthusiasts, it offers a unique glimpse into ancient Greek beliefs about life, death, and rebirth.
The Archaeological Museum of Eleusis, located within the ancient site, showcases artifacts from one of the most significant sanctuaries of ancient Greece. Highlights include statues of Demeter and Persephone, sacred offerings, and intricate reliefs depicting scenes from the Eleusinian Mysteries. Each exhibit reveals the spiritual and cultural importance of this sacred city, offering visitors a deeper understanding of ancient rituals, art, and daily life. A visit to this museum complements the exploration of the archaeological site, bringing its history to life.

This was the highlight of our trip. To give someone a sense of the mystical in busy Athens is quite something, and our friendly guide, Dimitri, was adept at sharing information about the Eleusinian Mysteries and the remaining visible sites along the Sacred Way from the city to Eleusis. Dimitri was very accommodating and allowed us as much time as we needed at the sites, which was amazing. Totally recommend
I was very fortunate to have Dimitrios as my guide for the day on this very special tour. He drove me in air-conditioned comfort to multiple sites sacred to the Mysteries of Eleusis, beginning with the Sacred Gate . At each location, Dimitrios explained the history and mythology in rich detail before giving me ample time to wander around the ruins at my own pace. He was punctual, professional, and genuinely passionate about sharing Greece’s ancient heritage. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a seamless, immersive private tour.
Pericles offered a thorough mythological tour of the Sacred Way to Elyusis. He was thoughtful, knowledgeable, and offered a leisurely experience with ample time to take in the spiritual journey of these mysteries.
For mythology buffs, this is the best tour around Athens! It is the only one to trace the Sacred Way and the footsteps of the initiates of the Eleusinian mysteries. The myth of Persephone’s descent to Hades and her reunion with Demeter, one of the great stories of rebirth and reunion, is brought to life by Pericles, who is incredibly knowledgeable and professional! 10/10!!
Dimitrios was amazing! So knowledgeable with mythical and mystical insights that I deeply appreciated. There was no rushing like other tours, he is very thoughtful and wanted it to truly be an amazing experience as you are traveling “The Sacred Way”. I highly recommend his tour! As well, he is an incredibly kind person and we so enjoyed our time with him. Thank you, Dimitrios!
A truely one of a kind experience which I can’t recommend highly enough. I am travelling as a solo female traveller and my guide Dimitrios made everything so easy. From collecting me from the airport to dropping me off at my hotel I felt comfortable and looked after. His knowledge of myth, history and Eleusis made this trip really special for me as I had long been fascinated by the mysteries. The site is really incredible. Again, i highly recommend you take this tour.
Dimitri is incredibly knowledgeable about the Mysteries, while also encouraging you to explore and learn from other sources rather than simply taking his word for it. His insights went much deeper than what I was able to find readily available online, which made the experience especially valuable. He was also a true gentleman throughout, even down to the small gestures like opening my door.
Dimitrios was very knowledgeable about the sacred way. He did a fantastic job of explaining it to my wife who was a newcomer to the ancient religion and myself . He followed a step by step guided tour through the historical route that the pilgrims would have taken to participate in the sacred ceremony. He left us plenty of time to absorb the significance of the holy site at and around the Telestrion.
An extraordinary immersive experience in the history of one of Greece's most fascinating places of worship. Dimitrios was an extremely knowledgeable guide, both about the history of the site and the unique characteristics of the mystery cult that took place there.
Pericles is a very friendly and knowledgeable guide. He stopped at all places along the Sacred Road to Eleusis and explained the culture and history of each stop very well. He brought waters and a paper guide for us to follow along with. This experience was very well worth it.
The trip was booked for my son who loves greek mythology. We both enjoyed the excursion. We had a comfortable journey, we were offered cold bottled water, which was well need in the heat of the mid-day sun. Our guide was very knowledgeable and great company. We loved Eleusis site and museum. Would definitely recommend.
Very interesting sites that are worth seeing if a fan of Greek Mythology or historical sites, with beautiful views and a great tour guide that's both friendly and knowledgeable.
My son and I really enjoyed the Mysteries of Eleusis tour. Dimitrios was very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the history and mythology. What stood out most was how he tailored the tour to our interests and level of knowledge. He answered all of our questions and shared insights that brought the site and its history to life. We both learned a lot and would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in Greek history and/or mythology.
My wife and me did the ELEUSIS prívate tour with DIMITRIS. Great experience, we highly recommend it!!
Dimitrios was an exceptional guide. We learned so much. And he gave us great recommendations for places to eat and experiences to try.
Dimitrios, our driver for the tour to Eleusis was very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend this tour.
Outstanding Eleusis Tour with Dimitrios We had an outstanding tour with Dimitrios on “Unveiling the Sacred Mysteries of Eleusis.” He was an exceptional guide—deeply knowledgeable, engaging, thoughtful, and passionate about the history and spiritual significance of Eleusis. Dimitrios brought the ancient site to life by explaining the Eleusinian Mysteries, the mythology of Demeter and Persephone, and the importance of Eleusis in the ancient Greek world. His explanations were clear, fascinating, and filled with historical and cultural insight. He helped us understand not only what we were seeing, but why Eleusis was such a sacred and powerful place for so many centuries. What made the tour especially memorable was Dimitrios’s ability to connect archaeology, mythology, religion, and human experience in a way that was both educational and moving. He answered our questions patiently, paced the tour perfectly, and made the entire experience feel personal and meaningful. We highly recommend Dimitrios and this tour to anyone interested in ancient Greece, mythology, religion, or sacred history. It was one of the most unique and memorable experiences of our trip.

Periklis was absolutely fantastic. From communication the previous day, to a prompt pick up, he was so warm, friendly and knowledgeable. His depth of knowledge and passion for history and the mysteries was amazing. It was a really interesting day and I'd recommend it to anyone!
I studied the Eleusinian Mysteries for about a decade, so this tour was nothing short of magic for me. Pericles picked me up right outside my accomodations, and the tour took me from spot to spot along the sacred way, stopping to see places where subway construction unearthed the path of dedicants to Eleusis. The monastery was fascinating, but the shrine to Aphrodite, and the bridge built by Hadrian were genuinely amazing to have time to tour and explore. For me, I was grateful to have time on my own in the archaeological sites to explore on my own time. I strongly recommend this tour for folks who have any background or understanding of the Eleusinian Mysteries. Friends of mine have gone from Athens out to the archaeological site in Eleusis by bus, but they didn't get the chance to explore the stops along the way and I was grateful for the experience Pericles has curated to take people through the sacred path.
The most underrated tour perhaps in Greece. Dimitrius was a great guide, very knowledgeable and showed us sites along the Sqcred Way pilgrimage route we would have otherwise overlooked. Highly recommended.
Had a great time! Had the whole place to ourselves. Dimitrios was very informative, friendly and easy to get along with.
I have a deep personal interest in the Mysteries of Eleusis. My private tour with Makis was everything I could have hoped for and more. His kindness, depth, knowledge and sincere enthusiasm for the Mysteries really made this one of the most special and meaningful tours of my life. Before going on this tour, I highly recommend reading a book or watching a few videos about the Mysteries, perhaps the very cornerstone of ancient Greek life. The Immortality Key is a popular option. One day, I will return to Greece and go visit the Temple of Delphi with Makis!
Pericles Century continue to deliver extraordinary value with their tours. Today it was lovely to have Periklis, the owner of the company, as our guide. His pride in both his country and his company was overwhelmingly evident. We thoroughly enjoyed the depth of his knowledge combined with his story telling style. A wonderful afternoon! Thank you!
I wrote to Perikles before my trip. I explained that I'm a spiritual practitioner with a connection to Eleusis and was seeking a guide who could hold space and honor this journey. Yes, I wanted someone with good historical knowledge, but there needed to be more...there needed to be a depth of spiritual understanding, as well. My request was responded to with genuine kindness and an expression of understanding my needs. I was paired with Makis and could not have been blessed with a better companion for my journey. He was 100% professional and did all the things a guide would normally do and more (arrived promptly at the port holding a sign, taught me the history, drove safely, was patient at stops, had water available...he even carried my bags and opened my door at every stop), but he also felt like an old friend. Makis was exactly what I needed in someone accompanying me on such a journey. Makis GETS it. I can't imagine going with another guide. I cannot wait to return so I can go with him to Delphi!
Incredible tour and amazing tour-guide. Dimitrios gave us all the background we needed while we fulfilled a dream tour for Eleusis! What a special place Eleusis is.. and I believe (and Dimitrios agrees) that this tour will only become more popular as people read and learn more of the pre-Christian mystery religious of Ancient Greece. We feel privileged to have done this tour when the site is still very quiet and unbothered. Cannot recommend this tour or Dimitrios enough!
We booked a private tour of Eleusis because our daughter is a history buff and loves Mythology. She wanted to take her time exploring the sites. There are so many archaeological sites connected to Eleusis; try to do some background research before you go. Dimitrios was a fantastic host and guide, very personable, patient, considerate, and kind. He made the trip memorable for everyone and took the time to share his love for his country with us. We had some great conversations. Thank you, Dimitrius, for creating more great memories and making our trip to Athens a wonderful experience.
Interesting tour with stops along the way to piece together the myths and findings about The Sacred Way. We appreciated our guide’s stories, and how he explained pronunciations, timelines, myths and facts. That along with a podcast, street side placards, and museum stops - we gained a far greater understanding than had we tried to explore on our own. If you are at all interested in the Eleusis Mysteries, this is a nice hassle free way to do it.
Pericles was kind and full of knowledge. This experience was even more magical than I'd dreamed because of the infectious joy with which he told us the history. Cannot recommend enough - this is a day I will never forget.
The trip was wonderful. The guide was very knowledgeable and even took some pictures for us. It included many stops along the path. Pickup and drop off was very smooth. Highly recommend
Pericles was very friendly, very knowledgable. We learned a lot. He took the time to stop for photo ops. We were amazed with the tour and were so fortunate to see the historical path of Elusis.
Great experience, Pericles is very knowledgeable and you can learn a lot of history from him, he is also very friendly. Highly recommend!
This morning we were picked up exactly on time at our hotel by Dimitrios, and set out on our private tour of the Sacred Way for the Eleuisinian Mysteries Tour. It was absolutely wonderful, and our guide was well prepared to lead us along the different stops of the initiates. We learned so much along the way about mythology and the ancient religion still practiced in Greece! Dimitrios was kind, funny and very professional, and he went out of his way to make sure I was accommodated… I had sprained my ankle a week ago. Highly recommend this tour, and if you can get Dimitrios, you'll be better for it!
We were four friends looking for something unique near Athens—and this tour exceeded all expectations. We were absolutely captivated by the history and mythology of the Eleusinian Mysteries. Every stop brought new stories and powerful images to life. Highly recommended for anyone who loves ancient legends and meaningful travel experiences. It was truly magical—and so much fun to share as a group!
Visiting Kerameikos and Eleusis was an unforgettable experience—each site rich with history, meaning, and a sense of timelessness. Walking through these ancient places felt like stepping into another world. We were fortunate to have Dimitri as our driver. He was not only incredibly friendly and engaging but also shared fascinating insights and stories along the way. His knowledge of history and genuine love for Greek culture made the entire journey even more meaningful. Dimitri truly elevated the day. If you have the chance to tour with him, you’re in for something special. Highly recommend!
This tour was truly special. Walking along the Sacred Way and visiting the ancient site of Eleusis felt like being part of something timeless. Every stop had its own unique energy—from the peaceful Daphni Monastery to the mysterious Ploutonion Cave. Our guide, Demetrio, was fantastic—kind, knowledgeable, and deeply respectful of the history and spirit of each place. He made the whole experience feel personal and meaningful. On our next trip to Greece, we will definitely book again with this company and highly recommend Demetrio to anyone looking for more than just a typical tour. This was something we’ll remember for a long time.
Save your money and take a taxi to Eleusis. The guide/driver was pleasant and attentive enough but no expert or event knowledgeable about the mysteries. Note the guide does not go into the site with you. The lack of quality knowledge, poor storytelling and little added value beyond a taxi service make the entire tour a tourist sham.
We took the Eleuisinian mysteries tour with Demetrios - he was very kind and made many stops along the way to Eleuisus to give us a sense of the entire journey of the initiate. We did not feel rushed and he prepared us with the information we needed to enjoy the final stop at the Telesterion and the temple of Demeter.
The trip to Eleusis was an important one to us and Periklis was a fantastic guide to take us through the journey and its importance. He showed us some of the sites personally and standing there as he explained the history brought it to life for us. He also let us roam alone and experience these ancient sites for ourselves. The trip was great and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in the more secret side of Greek history and mythology as you take the Sacred Way to Demeter and Persephone.
We booked this tour because we have personal interests in the history and wanted a more in-depth understanding of the place & cultures that influenced it. The tour was expensive- especially considering it was only about 3.5 hours long. The transportation was very nice, the guide was on time for pickup at our hotel, provided some good reference materials during the car ride, and was very informative along the way - sharing his knowledge of the myth and events that shaped it. He also stopped at several interesting and relevant sites along the way, but once we got to the massive archeological site, we were on our own. There was no guide inside the site - not even an audio guide to listen and follow along with. If we had not done a lot of reading in advance of this tour it would not have been particularly meaningful. Our recommendation for improving this experience is to - at very least - provide an audio guide. The price was too high.
Wow!! This was an amazing. inspiring and powerful experience. Dimopoulos was a fantastic, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable guide. To be able to travel the Sacred Way along the same route to the Mysteries was a powerful feeling beyond words. So magick. Very highly recommended!!
Very well worth seeing, especially if you have read up on the Mysteries beforehand, which I'm sure you always do. A "forgotten" site, so there was hardly anyone else there but the inevitable and ubiquitous cats when I visited. The silly picture of the maidens with torches is not what you will see. What you will see is a complex and fairly well-preserved place of extraordinary importance to the classical world, from distant early times down through Roman times. Eleusis was one of the three "Meccas" of the Greek world, along with Delos and Delphi - and Delphi can be crowded to almost Acropolis levels. Take time to sit and think yourself into the mystery of the Mysteries. The usual Greek absence of any accommodation for the handicapped.
It was great to learn about Greek spirit and culture from Makis. You would be lucky if he shares his fav spot in Athens with you. Extremely thoughtful.
A very interesting tour that takes place both inside and outside of Athens. My partner and I were delighted by our guide, Dimitrios. He was prompt, a good communicator, very knowledgeable, and had a great sense of humor. He went at our pace and pivoted when we were in dire need of a freddo espresso. We highly recommend booking for a day of easy adventure.
If seeking to experience the Sacred Way in comfort and with a knowledgeable guide, Makis is the perfect host. While the experience of visiting Delphi/Oracle could be described as grand visuals, prophesy, outward display (significant drive to/from Athens), the Sacred Way is complementary but focused more on the personal religious/spiritual inward journey of ancient followers and their regular pilgrimages starting ftom the edge of Athens. Much still remains cloaked in mystery. Makis has a broad understanding and helps piece it together with multiple stops along the way, with colorful commentary. It was a day to be pampered and treated like royalty.
I seriously can't say enough good things about this tour—or our amazing guide! I booked the "Sacred Path from Athens to Eleusis" tour totally on a whim at midnight, and it ended up being one of the biggest highlights of my trip so far. Our guide was super knowledgeable, but also just really passionate and fun to listen to. They brought the whole journey to life, mixing archaeology, mythology, and history in a way that made each stop feel meaningful. From walking on the ancient road at Gephyra, tucked under the modern metro, to standing in the massive Sanctuary of Demeter at Eleusis, they gave such great context that made everything click. What I loved most was how they tied everything back to the bigger story of the Eleusinian Mysteries and the myth of Demeter, Persephone, and Hades. Places like the Monastery of Daphni and the Sanctuary of Aphrodite weren’t just cool to see—they were brought to life with stories about the pilgrims who once traveled this same path thousands of years ago. It made the whole experience feel magical.
Excellent tour of the Mysteries of Eleusis! Dimopoulos picked us up right outside our hotel and stopped at several spots along the Sacred Way we would not have found on our own. He was very knowledgeable and flexible with our schedule. Great tour guide— will likely book a different tour with him again!
Absolutely loved the ride and Pericles was accommodating to us taking our time at some of the sites. It was nice to have essentially a private ride, it made it easier to hear and understand the history. Also, I loved seeing the cats that roam so freely.
Fun , not too long, trip from Athens in the footsteps of Greek gods. Interesting way to learn about Demetor and stories of the gods.
