Nestled within the modern cityscape, this archaeological site reveals a fascinating fragment of the Sacred Way (Iera Odos), the ancient road that connected Athens to the sanctuary of Eleusis. Just beyond the city’s ancient walls, the Kifisos River marked a crucial crossing point, where an arched stone bridge once stood. Discovered during the construction of the Eleonas Metro Station, the remnants of the bridge include three surviving piers, indicating a structure with at least five arches. This historical crossing not only served as a vital link for trade and travel but also played a significant role in the Eleusinian processions, as thousands of pilgrims passed here on their sacred journey. Today, the site stands as a testament to the engineering and spiritual significance of ancient Greece, offering a rare opportunity to witness a part of the legendary route that once echoed with the footsteps of worshippers and philosophers alike.
The Ancient Sacred Way (Iera Odos) in Aigaleo is one of the most historically significant routes of antiquity, connecting Athens to the sacred city of Eleusis. This ancient road was the path taken by pilgrims during the Eleusinian Mysteries, one of the most revered religious festivals of the ancient world. As you walk along the remnants of the Sacred Way, you’ll traverse the same path where ancient Athenians carried sacred objects, sang hymns, and celebrated the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone. The road passes through the Aigaleo area, offering views of the landscape once associated with myth and ritual. Discover the history and significance of this sacred route, where every step resonates with stories of devotion, mystery, and celebration. Experience the connection between Athens and Eleusis, and immerse yourself in the journey that symbolized renewal, hope, and the cycle of life.
The Monastery of Daphni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands along the ancient Sacred Way (Iera Odos), the historic route connecting Athens to Eleusis, the center of the Eleusinian Mysteries. Built in the 11th century, this remarkable example of Byzantine art and architecture is renowned for its exquisite mosaics, including the awe-inspiring depiction of Christ Pantocrator in the dome. Surrounded by ancient cypress trees and steeped in history, the monastery offers a serene escape, blending spirituality, artistry, and a connection to the sacred traditions of ancient Greece.

Just one kilometer east of the Sanctuary of Demeter in Eleusis, you'll find a remarkably well-preserved ancient Roman bridge. Built from durable Piraeus limestone, it measures 50 meters in length and 5.30 meters in width. The bridge features a central section with four arches—two wider in the middle and two narrower at the ends—along with inclined approaches on both sides. Dating back to Emperor Hadrian's reign in 125 AD, this bridge showcases exceptional Roman engineering and played a crucial role in connecting the Sacred Way with the Eleusinian Kephisos River. Today, its ruins stand as a powerful reminder of one of ancient Greece’s most revered religious traditions.
The Kallichoron Well, located in Eleusis, holds a significant place in Greek mythology and the Eleusinian Mysteries. According to ancient tradition, this is the spot where the goddess Demeter rested while searching for her daughter, Persephone, after her abduction by Hades. The well's name, meaning "well of the beautiful dances," reflects the myth that the local women danced there to comfort the grieving goddess. Today, the Kallichoron Well is a symbolic site, connecting visitors to the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of ancient Greece.

Pericles's tour was AMAZING! We had a 5 hour private tour which included the Keramikos Archaeological site and museum. He was friendly, informative, and personalized our tour giving more time to see sites when needed and added on the newly opened Keramikos site. He was very entertaining and kept us hydrated with plenty of water. He dropped us off at a delicious restaurant he recommended near our hotel. We highly recommend his tour! Lynn Neher, Florida, USA
Our guide was good easy to understand very accommodating and not pushed for time.
This tour is mainly designed to transport you through all the spots of the sacred way like taxi service with very basic historic explanations. Pericles, the chofer, is a nice person, however, for the price of the experience (120€/person) we really expected official guide service included and not only door to door transportation between museums and other spots (with ticket entrances not included by the way).
This is a true family business, as Pericles himself told us, started by his father in the 1970s and now continued by his son as the third generation. They genuinely care about their customers, offering a personalized experience and always paying attention to our needs. The tour itself is incredibly unique – there’s simply no other tour available that focuses on both Eleusis and the Sacred Way. We had an amazing time, and we can’t thank Pericles enough for such a memorable experience!
