Itinerary
The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, arguably making the peninsula an island. The canal was dug through the isthmus at sea level and has no locks. It is 6.4 kilometres (4 mi) in length and only 21.4 metres (70 ft) wide at its base, making it impassable for many modern ships. From high up, you can enjoy the best view of Corinth's isthmus and admire the steep limestone walls while you observe the vessels below you navigate their way through the canal.
The fortified citadel of ancient Mycenae, the seat of the mythical and mighty King Agamemnon. An impressive and well-preserved site, the city of Mycenae gave its name to an entire civilization. Admire sites such as the Tomb of Clytemnestra, the infamous Lion’s Gate, the Cyclopean walls and learn of their blood-stained past. In the second millennium BC, Mycenae was one of the major centres of Greek civilization, a military stronghold which dominated much of southern Greece, Crete, the Cyclades and parts of southwest Anatolia. The period of Greek history from about 1600 BC to about 1100 BC is called Mycenaean in reference to Mycenae. At its peak in 1350 BC, the citadel and lower town had a population of 30,000 and an area of 32 hectares.
The archaeological site of Mycenae comprises the fortified acropolis and surrounding funerary and habitation sites, which are located mainly to its west and southwest. Most of the visible monuments date to the centre's great floruit, from 1350 to 1200 BC. Great Cyclopean walls surround the almost triangular acropolis, which is accessed from the northwest through the famous Lion Gate, the symbol of the Mycenaean rulers' power. The gate was named after the two opposing lions carved in relief and set into the relieving triangle, a typical feature of Mycenaean architecture, over the door.
The Lion Gate was the main entrance of the Bronze Age citadel of Mycenae, southern Greece. It was erected during the 13th century BC, around 1250 BC, in the northwest side of the acropolis and is named after the relief sculpture of two lionesses or lions in a heraldic pose that stands above the entrance. The Lion Gate is the sole surviving monumental piece of Mycenaean sculpture, as well as the largest sculpture in the prehistoric Aegean. It is the only monument of Bronze Age Greece to bear an iconographic motif that survived without being buried underground, and the only relief image which was described in the literature of classical antiquity, such that it was well known prior to modern archaeology.

The Treasury of Atreus or Tomb of Agamemnon is a large tholos or beehive tomb on Panagitsa Hill at Mycenae constructed during the Bronze Age around 1250 BC. The stone lintel above the doorway weighs 120 tons, with approximate dimensions 8.3 x 5.2 x 1.2m, the largest in the world. The tomb was used for an unknown period. Mentioned by the Roman geographer Pausanias in the 2nd century AD, it was still visible in 1879 when the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann discovered the shaft graves under the "agora" in the Acropolis at Mycenae.

Fantastic day trip, we really enjoyed it. Our driver Spyros was so knowledgeable and brilliant.
For me, this was the very best way to do a day trip. I’m not one for coach tours and guided groups, so this option was perfect. Thanasis is a highly professional and friendly driver who arrived ten mins before departure time. But he is much more than that — he is a mine of knowledge and information! We spent the round trip journey to Mycenae talking about ancient history, what to do back in Athens, and his great tips for places to see in Greece on future holidays. I will definitely use this service again!
Dimitris arrived early with a large and clean car. He was welcoming and friendly. Our journey was relaxing despite busy traffic. Dimitris was knowledgeable and gave us as long as we wanted at each stop. We had a great trip and a wonderful host in Dimitris.
Alex was extremely friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. His English is excellent, and we enjoyed every minute.
The whole experience was very informative and interesting. The drive was very smooth and our driver George was full of knowledge about the area, which made the experience better.
The canal was amazing and our tour guide/driver made it perfect. He had the right amount of knowledge and allowed us the opportunity to customize as we needed. Seeing the museum and touring ruins was fascinating and reminded us of all the marvels
Alex provided a very pleasant day for our trip to Mycenae through the Corinth isthmus. He was a polite and knowledgeable companion for this tour giving us plenty of time to visit the sites. He was on time, the car was comfortable and clean, and he was an excellent driver.
First-rate experience. car was clean and comfortable, water available if needed, and the driver Nokkis was very informative on both classical and ancient Greek History. A good drive there and back with time for visits to the Citadel of Mycenae, Museum and the Tomb of Atreus. Plus a halt at the Corinth Canal for photos. Highly recommended
Costa was extremely knowledgeable and engaging with our family of 7. He was prompt and offered some different choices of what we would like to experience throughout our day. We were able to take our time to visit Mycenae / Lion’s Gate which our college age kids have studied. This was the highlight of visit. As we were driving over an hour, he refreshed our memory of Greek history, mythology and biblical events and how they relate to the area. We also chatted about our families, hobbies and travels. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and time spent with Costa!
Our guide Nick brought us an excellent day trip. Amazing archeological sites, on-time pick-up and drop-off…
Excellent tour. Our guide was exceptional with deep knowledge of everything associated with Mycenae and any topic of Ancient Greece, and a great pleasure to converse with. Many great memories.
Good communication from the time we booked, good vehicle and a great driver/guide George who made the trip worthwhile. We didn’t know that although it was a clear day in Athens, it would rain in Mycenae. Given this was a private tour, they could have informed us, we could have at least taken umbrellas, if not opted for a different day. The van didn’t have seats facing each other like in the website photos, which wasn’t a big problem for us but it’s misleading. Also when stopping at the canal, the convenience store that was recommended was a big tourist trap - highly overpriced and bad quality food.
Our trip today with Spiros was excellent. He knew so much about everything we were driving past, pointing out many sites along the road. He was definitely the most informed tour guide we have had during our visit. Mycenae itself was interesting, from the Lion’s Gate to the ruins of the Palace to the spectacular vistas that were visible in all directions. The museum on the site had a nice collection of pottery, jewelry, and coins and was well worth the visit. The treasury of Atreus nearby was an amazing structure and an incredible feat of construction for ancient times. I recommend this tour.
Was very unimpressed with the start of trip for cost. Our driver was ok however he started. By saying he was only a driver and wasn't a guide and his English wasnt good.so not happy. Also very little time in Corinth trip got better Mycenae so that why a 3 star.
Outstanding tour. Our tour envoy/driver Ruslan was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and professional. Although it was only a half day tour, it was definitely the best of our trip. Would recommend to anyone, and would definitely book Ruslan again.
Mycenae archeological site was impressive. Our tour guide/driver, Thanos, was very knowledgeable and very friendly. He took us to a small village for lunch at a local restaurant which we really enjoyed.
Our driver, Takis, was fantastic. We felt safe and secure with Takis. He was on time, drive safely and gave us lots of information. Our tour guide was great and gave us clear and concise information regarding the Mycenaean civilization.
We booked on TripAdvisor and communicated ahead of time about where we would meet our driver. Everything went very smoothly with the pickup and Dimitri was very friendly. He shared interesting information about his life, how he grew up, Greek history, mythology and more. He has a very nice Mercedes taxi, and it was a very smooth comfortable ride. We stopped at the Corinth Canal and then had about an hour and 15 minutes at the Mycenae site. He recommended a popular souvlaki place when we returned to Athens and overall it was a great half day trip!
It was a wonderful morning.
