A fabulous experience. The guide was very engaging and offered unique insights about the attraction based on her personal experience living in the local area. A long day but well worth it!

Itinerary
Depart Athens at 08:00 from Larissa Station and avoid the heavier traffic of later departures. Travel in comfort aboard an air-conditioned coach with free Wi-Fi and USB charging. What truly sets this experience apart is our genuine seaside stop in Kamena Vourla, directly on the beach—not at a highway rest area. We are the only Meteora day-trip operator offering this true beachfront break at Camino Restaurant, where you can relax beside the sea with coffee, snacks or an optional meal. Continue to Kastraki for a traditional lunch stop at Efrosino Restaurant before exploring Meteora with a knowledgeable local tour leader. Visit 3 active monasteries, enjoy panoramic viewpoints and photo stops around all 6 monasteries, and discover the history, traditions and geology of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. With our earlier departure, you also return to Athens earlier in the evening, giving you more time to enjoy the rest of your night.
Coastal Brunch Stop:Unlike typical tours that pause at highway rest areas “near the sea,” our tour takes you directly to the beachfront in Kamena Vourla for a 30-minute break at Camino Beach Bar. Exclusively on our tour, use our onboard pre-order app to select brunch, coffee, smoothies, cocktails or other refreshments in advance, so your order is ready on arrival and you can enjoy more of your break without waiting. You are completely free to spend the 30 minutes as you prefer: relax at the beach bar and enjoy the sea breeze and coastal views, or walk along the central road of Kamena Vourla and visit local cafés, shops and supermarkets before continuing to Meteora.
# Meteora Monasteries & Hermit Caves Discover the very best of UNESCO-listed Meteora on a carefully designed sightseeing tour that takes you **inside 3 of the most impressive active monasteries**. Explore their centuries-old chapels, courtyards and priceless religious heritage while your local tour leader brings the history and traditions of Meteora to life. Beyond the monastery visits, enjoy scenic stops and panoramic viewpoints overlooking **all 6 active monasteries**, giving you the chance to see and photograph the entire Meteora complex. You will also stop at the historic **Hermit Caves of Badovas**, where the earliest ascetics lived in caves beneath the towering rocks. A complete Meteora experience combining monasteries, hidden religious history, dramatic landscapes and unforgettable viewpoints.
.Perched dramatically on a massive rock pillar, the Holy Monastery of Varlaam is considered by many visitors the most impressive monastery in Meteora, combining breathtaking views, rich history, and remarkable architecture. As the second largest monastery of Meteora, it offers a unique balance of spirituality, authenticity, and accessibility. Originally founded in the 14th century by the hermit monk Hosios Varlaam, the monastery was later transformed into a thriving monastic community by the priest-monks Theophanes and Nectarios Apsarades from Ioannina. Its beautiful Catholicon, dedicated to All Saints, was built in 1541–42. Inside, visitors can admire magnificent 16th-century frescoes attributed to the renowned hagiographer Frangos Catelanos. Combined with panoramic balconies overlooking the Meteora valley, Varlaam offers one of the most complete and unforgettable monastery experiences in Meteora.
Upon reaching Kalabaka, we begin the experience with an optional lunch stop and restroom break at the authentic Efrosino Restaurant in the picturesque village of Kastraki, nestled beneath the towering cliffs of Meteora. Guests who have selected the lunch-included rate can enjoy a choice of 10 delicious traditional Greek meal options, including vegetarian selections, served in a warm local atmosphere with beautiful views of the Meteora rocks before continuing the exploration of this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
St. Stephen’s Monastery is the most accessible monastery in Meteora, making it ideal for visitors who wish to experience a real Meteora monastery without climbing many stairs. Instead of a long staircase, visitors simply cross a small bridge leading directly to the entrance. Today, it operates as a peaceful nunnery (convent) and offers a unique atmosphere of serenity and hospitality. Perched high above the town of Kalambaka, the monastery provides breathtaking panoramic views over the Meteora valley, the Thessalian plains, the Pindus mountains, and the surrounding rock formations. Monastic life on this rock dates back to the 12th century, while the monastery was developed in the 15th century by Hosios Antonios and Hosios Philotheos. Inside, visitors can admire two beautiful cathedrals, including the 18th-century church dedicated to Saint Charalambos, which houses his holy relics.
The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas is the first Monastery that we encounter on our way to the Holy Meteora and was founded at the end of the 14th century.
The Holy Trinity Monastery (Agia Triada) is the least accessible monastery in Meteora, but also one of the most photographed and iconic due to its spectacular location perched dramatically atop a steep isolated rock pillar. The effort to reach it is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the Meteora valley, Kalambaka town, and the surrounding mountains. The monastery became world famous after appearing in the James Bond movie *For Your Eyes Only* starring Roger Moore, making it one of the most recognizable landmarks of Meteora worldwide. During the tour, we make two panoramic photo stops so visitors can capture the majestic views and the monastery’s extraordinary cliffside setting from the best viewpoints. Monastic life here dates back to at least 1362. Visitors follow a scenic pathway to the base of the rock before climbing approximately 140 steps carved into the cliff to reach the monastery entrance.
The Holy Monastery of Roussanou is one of the most photographed and picturesque monasteries of Meteora, beautifully built on a lower rock formation surrounded by dramatic cliffs and lush scenery. Originally founded in the 16th century and later transformed into a peaceful convent in 1988, it offers a unique atmosphere of serenity and elegance. Compared to other Meteora monasteries, Roussanou is more accessible and easier to visit. Our tour follows a smart and comfortable route, walking through a shaded downhill footpath leading directly to the monastery entrance. After the visit, guests continue downhill to the opposite exit where our bus conveniently awaits, avoiding unnecessary uphill walking and making the experience much more enjoyable.
Discover the breathtaking UNESCO-listed Meteora, where centuries-old monasteries stand dramatically atop towering sandstone pillars. Travel through stunning landscapes, visit historic monasteries, admire panoramic viewpoints, and learn about the rich history, spirituality, and unique geology of one of Greece's most remarkable destinations.
Sunset Dinner by the Sea: On the return journey to Athens, we enjoy an exclusive seaside stop at the beachfront Camino Beach Bar in Kamena Vourla, far away from crowded highway service stations. Guests can relax in a beautiful coastal setting and enjoy an optional dinner just steps from the waves, surrounded by a premium summer atmosphere and stunning sea views during sunset. For greater comfort and less waiting time, guests can conveniently pre-order and pay for their meal through our smart onboard QR ordering system directly from the bus before arrival. It’s the perfect ending to a day filled with nature, culture, and unforgettable landscapes.
The Great Meteoron Monastery is the largest, oldest, and most historic monastery of Meteora, dramatically perched atop a towering rock formation that gave Meteora its name, meaning “suspended in the air.” Founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite, it became the spiritual and cultural center of the entire region. Visitors climb approximately 300 stone steps to reach the monastery, rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the Meteora valley, the Pindus mountains, and the surrounding rock formations. Inside, guests can explore impressive museums, the historic old kitchen, a rich monastic library, beautiful Byzantine frescoes, religious treasures, and a traditional gift shop, making it one of the most complete monastery experiences in Meteora. Please note that the monastery is closed every Tuesday.
Before departing back to Athens, we make a short stop in the lively town of Kalambaka, located at the foot of the majestic Meteora cliffs. Here, travelers can relax, use the restrooms, grab a coffee or local snack, stroll through the charming streets, and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this traditional Greek town surrounded by towering rock formations. The stop also offers the perfect chance to take a few final photos of Meteora rising dramatically above the town before the return journey begins.

Great experience, the bus was comfortable, the guide was knowledgeable and friendly and the scenery was fantastic, just need to be careful about the pickup, there’s several buses in the same line
No commentary on bus, just get on. Sit for 5 hours. Restroom break then finally 5 hours later, lunch which we had 20 minutes to choke down. Guides came on board, explained quickly what we were going to see. Didn’t go inside with us, or give explanation of anything. Saw two beautiful monasteries. Saw several more from a distance. Geology of area was explained quickly. I couldn’t understand. Back on bus for punishing drive back. Felt like a jail term. Long drive with not much time to see sites. Very stressful day. Don’t go. We went in November, rainy. I’m ready to go home. I have never enjoyed tour less.
It's a long day, but so worth it. Well organised, informative and the monasteries are just amazing to visit and imagine how they operated in an earlier time period.
We went on a large bus tour from Athens leaving at 8 am and didn’t return until 10 pm. It was a very long day and very strenuous, but we spent so much time in the bus traveling that we were able to rest a lot. Seeing these monasteries on the top of such a gigantic rocks was the highlight of our trip. It was a really fantastic experience because the views are stunning.
The guides offer an amazing experience while travelling to Meteora. The driver never felt tiring for a single moment.
This trip is amazing! It is a long day for sure, but worth it! From start to finish it was well- organized and planned out. Beautiful views, architecture, history. Definitely a bucket-list kind of place!!
Was apprehensive. 14hr trip on a coach isnt what we had planned. 2hr coach ride for breakfast by the beach. Great view. Further coach journey to the foot of the monastery trail. Very informative. Moved along for a fabulous lunch which we included in our ticket price. Lots of choice and typically Greek. Now what I coild not see at all on tje viator website was that you need to bring cash! You cannot enter the 3 monasteries without cash, €5 pp entry. Also wasnt told you need to pay to use restrooms at all stops except food breaks. These you need €1 per visit pp. So with the exception of this small blip we had a pretty good time. The views are absolutely out of this world and Katherina was full of knowledge. Massive pat on the back for the driver aswell
It was one of the best places I have ever been to. Thank you for the organizers and a tour leader - Maria. It was a tiring trip but it 100% worth it. I was a bit critical at first because of the group size. It was a full bus of more than 30 people. But even thought it was crowded trip it felt very well organized
Be prepared for a 14 hr day. A 3 1/2 hour bus ride just to pick up the tour guide. Bathroom and food stops along the way.. We visited 3 monasteries. The first one had over 300 stairs. The 2nd over 100. Know your limits and wear good walking shoes. We arrived back at Larissa train station in Athens around 10:30 pm. Taxis located across the street. Our tour guide was not so good.
Amazing Experience and worth the climb. The 1st monastery, St Nikolaos, was the hardest climb. The 2nd, Varlaam Monastery was easier, larger and more beautiful than the 1st. Holy Trinity was the last and smallest. The photo stops were well planned and breathtaking, with locations used in Game of Thrones and 007 For Your Eyes Only. Don’t be last in line for lunch. The guide was locally raised and well educated in the local history. A tour not to be missed.
Despite rain for part of day, tour was very interesting. Gorgeous scenery. Great guide and driver. Waterfront lunch was delicious. Also supper at same restaurant on return trip. Note: Lots of steps!! My cousin and I (70s) found the steps easier than the grade on switchback trail. Long day.
Great tour. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Parties who want to travel and eat together should book together. Also bring cash for entrance fee and some 1 euro coins for the public bathrooms.
Bring rain gear. Lots and lots of stairs! Amazing views and beauty. Bring euros for admission. 5 euros each monastery
Demetriou was a great tour guide and was very informative. We had a wonderful day out
Phew..! I knew this was going to be a long day, but it was somehow more than I could've imagined. The drive time is long, as expected, but what makes it so so so much longer is the stops for meals/snacks/bathroom breaks and unfortunately the food was awful. The amount of steps to be climbed to access the monasteries was also unexpectedly significant. Im in good shape and the first stop alone left me gasping for air. All in all, the sights were beautiful and the monasteries were interesting, but that was ultimately a fraction of what the day was. The numerous stops and food quality made the day much less enjoyable than it wouldve otherwise been.
Well organised trip. Multiple buses - but each driver had a list of names for his bus, so it wasn't hard to find our bus. There were 50 or so on our bus though - not the maximum 18 or so that the booking confirmation mentioned! Amazing scenery though, and very well organised. The meal stops were good, and very slick ordering ahead online for the dinner stop in the evening. There's a supermarket just round the corner behind the restaurant, so we got snacks there too - lot cheaper. 3 monateries were great
Amazing area! Well worth the long bus ride. Kate was a wonderful guide! Very knowledgeable of the history of the area. The lunch in Meteora was delicious. Recommend purchasing in the package or order ahead on the bus.
Meteora: Unforgettable ★★★★★ The monasteries on their sandstone pillars are even more stunning in person than in photos. We visited four, each with its own character, beautiful frescoes, and sweeping views. It's a long day with about five hours on the bus each way, but absolutely worth it. Our guide, Maria, was fantastic: knowledgeable, personable, and full of great stories. Wear comfortable shoes!
This tour was amazing! We knew it would be a long day, but it was so worth it. The regular stops split up the trip. Meteora was absolutely incredible..one of the most incredible places we have seen…pictures don’t do it justice. The tour was very well organized! Highly recommend!!!
It was an excellent tour. Communication until our tour guide got on board was not the best, BUT there are placards in the seats that explain everything. Start with those. Lunch was delicious, but we ate breakfast not knowing the schedule. Use the QR codes for schedule and menus of optional meals. Highly recommend!
This is a definite must do activity in my opinion, did the overnight extended tour ,the tour guides, transportation and accommodation.... excellent, the own and resturants top notch
Our guide was awesome and very informative, the monestaries were fun to see. Wifi on bus was spotty, but didn't matter much since we were paying more attention to everything else
This tour was awesome! The guide was so informative also a great sense of humour. I would 100% recommend it.
Meteora was my favorite part of my trip to Athens! It’s a really long day but well worth it! Make sure to order your food for brunch & dinner using the QR Code in the bus. We didn’t and there was a bit of a wait to get our food. Be smarter than me and have it waiting for you when you arrive!
Great day trip. Definitely preorder your brunch, they give the qr code on the bus. The actual lunch provided is around 1300. I did not need dinner after that lunch, but I had packed a power bar. Dinner stop is at 7. Same place as brunch. If you are going to do that then pre order The bus leaves from the train station. I got there 15 min early and the bus was already full, so get there earlier than that.
Meteora was one of the highlights of my trip to Greece. The dramatic scenery, fascinating history, and beautiful monasteries made this a unique and worthwhile excursion. The only drawback was the meeting point, where several buses were departing and it was not immediately clear which tour belonged to which group. Better signage or organization would make the start smoother. As a solo female traveller, I felt completely safe throughout the experience. The guide was organised, attentive, and clear about where we needed to be, so I would confidently recommend this excursion to anyone travelling alone. The coach was comfortable and air-conditioned. Charging outlets were available, but they were not USB ports, so bring an adapter or power bank for the long journey. The brunch stop at Camino Restaurant was excellent, with quick service and enough time to eat and use the facilities. Lunch later in the day was less memorable, it was at another restaurant and I had the traditional Greek pies which were delicious. Water was included, but should you want soda, that’s at an additional charge. Our guide was friendly, informative, and kept the group on schedule. The monasteries were busy but manageable, with bathroom facilities at each stop. Some accepted card payments, but carrying cash is still a good idea. Be prepared for the monastery dress code: women are expected to wear long skirts or dresses with sleeves, and wraps are provided if needed. Photography is restricted in some areas, so check the signs and respect the monasteries rules. Overall, this was a well-organised and unforgettable trip. The views alone made it absolutely worth booking, and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Greece.
What an amazing day! I had no idea that these monasteries ever existed until I started looking for ideas for a girls trip. So glad we booked this experience! Our guide, Maria, was amazing and knowledgeable and her love for animals matched mine. Our bus driver, I think it was Delios, was amazing. Those narrow winding roads would be tough in a car, much less a huge bus. I will say that the experience does require some degree of fitness in that there a quite a few hills and stairs at 3 of the monasteries. Would I do it again?? Absolutely.
This was a wonderful journey to experience the Meteora region. The guide provided great context for us to understand the area and the history of the monasteries. The visits to the 3 monasteries were self guided but was not a negative since it is so spectacular. It is a long day - 4 hours each way in bus - but the stops made the trip quite manageable. A definite addition to your visit to Athens.
Excellent Local.Guide. Best of all. Very knowledgeable and patient. Drive to Meteora wasn't that exciting but locally was very interesting
Fantastic! The Meteora monasteries are so much more impressive up close than what we had seen in pictures. The transportation from Athens was comfortable and we had a nice stop for breakfast and dinner. Lunch was provided and it was just OK.
Visit Meteora tour arrangement and process was smooth and efficient. Meeting point is outside Larissa train station, arrive by 7:45am or earlier for 8:00am departure. Your tickets/names will be checked to their list for boarding. There were 2-3 Visit Meteora buses when we went. At end of tour, bus drops off on same spot. Convenient with train station and taxis. Bus is standard coach. USB outlets available but slow charging. No bathroom on board. Free bottle of water is provided mid afternoon. One 15min stop by beachside area at midpoint to use restrooms or grab a snack at Camino Restaurant. Same stop on return for 40mins for dinner. Eating is optional and can order/pay in advance via QR code provided. Guide we had, Maria, was great. Explained the history of Meteora, monasteries, area, etiquette, etc. Meteora was breathtaking. Amazing views. Epic photos. We entered 3 of the 6 monasteries with Great Meteoron and Varlam being the most beautiful but also he most steps to climb. The other Saint Nicholas can be skipped to save €5 admission fee. Overall this is once in a lifetime opportunity to visit a real UNESCO gem.
Maria guide was wonderful! Things that could be improved, meeting point and which bus, stood in three different bus lines until found the one that I was booked on. Need signage outside bus to determine which bus. WiFi connection was only announced once as to what network, was never successful in signing in. Also it should be stated to bring your international connector to plug your device in as there was no usb connection. Tour was incredible!
Beautiful and breathtaking Monastery to visit in the mountains of Greece. Long day, about 3-4 hrs drive from and back to Athens. Is it worth it? Yes, not to miss. Plenty of breaks along the way for restrooms. Be able to handle climbing slopes to get to the churches. If your a James Bond Fan, your be able to see Holy Trinity Monastery which was filmed in For Your Eyes Only. That one is a 139 step climb on rocks. Last stop was Holy Trinity run by Sisters who you will see helping out. In gift shops, able to purchase items that they made, example. Dry tea which I did. Definitely pick the lunch, authentic Greek food, delicious and saves time looking on your own. Our guide was amazing, very informative of all sites and our driver got us back and forth to Athens safely. Is it worth the long day?? Yes. It’s unique and amazing. Cheers. Thank you.
A good way to see the monasteries of Meteora, but the initial check in and boarding process was total chaos. There was no tour company representative to check people in, and multiple buses for different tours with no identification. You had to fight through huge crowds of people to talk to each bus driver individually, to find out whether you were on his list. It took 3 attempts for us to find the correct bus. People were frustrated and angry. A lot of that could have been avoided if there had been a tour representative with a master list to check people in and direct them to the correct bus. Once on board, the tour was fine. The guide didn’t join you until you got to Meteora. Our guide Chris was very friendly and helpful. The itinerary we followed didn’t match the one that we received online but I understand that different monasteries are closed on different days, and they have different closing times. We didn’t have lunch until 2:45 so be sure to bring some snacks with you. At the mid-morning stop, there is a grocery store right next door to the restaurant. The bus WiFi was intermittent, and sometimes you couldn’t access it because it was at capacity. The USB-C charging outlet didn’t work but the USB-A outlet did. The guides are not allowed to lead you inside the monastery, so if there are particular things you want to see inside, do some research before your tour. I felt that there was enough time at each stop to see the basic highlights. They did enforce the dress code pretty strictly. No shorts or sleeveless shirts, and women couldn’t wear pants. Most women on our tour wore dresses or skirts, but they did provide a wrap skirt to borrow if you needed it. I did see one girl (not on our tour) turned away because she was wearing shorts and a tank top. Be respectful in your clothing choices. There are A LOT of steps. If you can’t climb stairs, don’t go to Meteora!
Fantastic tour! The tour guide was a local and she had great insight into Meteora and the history! Fantastic tour of the monasteries.
There are alot of stairs. Start right away, so you get to the top. We would have liked alittle more time at the last one.
Monasteries are beautiful. The organization of the tour could have been better at the starting point.
Meteora was an incredible sight to visit, view and experience. The guide was very friendly, interactive and knowledgeable. The bus ride was long (4 hours each way), but comfortable, and the lunch on the way was very good.
This was a beautiful trip. My group of 13 family members loved it. The views are spectacular. The food stops were organized (with prebooking) and delicious, and despite the long day, we all had a great time.
This was a great experience where you get to see beautiful scenery and monasteries away from Athens. The long bus ride and steep climbs may not be for everyone. We traveled in mid-October (after the high season) but all of sites were still crowded.
Outstanding trip, very well organized. Beautiful place, highly recommended. Guide tour person amazing and both drivers are very good. Coffee & dinner stop were very good and well organized with pre-order option. Lunch could be better.
WOW, the Meteora Monasteries were amazing with breathtaking views! This was a very long tour and day from Athens but so worth it! Our tour guide in Meteora was fantastic!! I am so sorry I forgot her name it is not reflective of her, but my old memory!! Plus we had lots of excursions/guides on our 30 day trip. Our guide had a fabulous personality, was very knowledgeable of the area & Monasteries plus she had a great love for cats & 1 dog...thank you for caring!!! Good luck with your future endeavors. The 2 guys ( bus driver & escort) for our long drive could have been friendlier. It would have been nice if we had some commentary on our drive to Meteora...ie areas we were passing, history of Athens etc. It was disorganized at the bus pick up location in Athens. Lots of buses, people and know one knew where to line up and which bus to go on...lots of confusion at the start! You need proper guides calling out what is going on not just bus drives that can't public speak. The beachfront stop for food/coffee (breaky & dinner) is a bit of a gong show as there are lots of people on the excursions. The restaurant along the water was lovely and the food is good. The staff do their best to serve you with such an influx of people all at once. Buy the time we arrived & bought our coffee / croissant it was pretty much time to leave. I do not like the pre order system for our meals as the wifi was spotty and frustrating to use. We were kicked out of the app a few times and had to keep trying till it worked. I would recommend this excursion as the Monestaries are something to truly experience, WOW!!
Prepare for a long bus ride to and from. Need $5 cash per location if you want to go in especially on the last one.
Very cool experience. Very impressive sites
It was so.orgnized, we drove 4 hours to get there, totally worth it, the food on the way was so good, the place is breath taking
The actual tour was incredible. The views were amazing & the stories behind the monasteries were enlightening. Our guide was very kind & very well versed on the history. Where we stopped for lunch was very scenic & lovely. My only negative comment is that when all attendees arrived there were four buses going to the same place, but very little organization. Figuring out which bus we belong on was quite chaotic. Other than that, I would absolutely recommend this tour!
Costas the driver and Apostle the guide were an excellent team.. This is a must destination !!!! Can not miss!
The day is very long but such an incredible experience. Our guide was lively and really informative. You could tell that she had a connection to the community
The sites were amazing. The stops were quick but helpful. Maria spoke took fast and made too many flip remarks. She didn’t seem to take the job seriously. Maybe she’s burned out?
