We arrive at Meteora and visit three Monasteries. Breathtaking at first site, the Monasteries are of great cultural and natural importance. Split from earthquakes, weathered from the wind and the water over millions of millions of years, these immense rocks are an authentic masterpiece of mother nature. The Meteora is a rock formation in central Greece hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox Monasteries. The six (of an original 24) monasteries are built on immense natural pillars and hill-like rounded boulders that dominate the local area. Meteora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List and the name means "lofty", "elevated", and is etymologically related to meteor. Please be modestly dressed. Women are suggested to wear long skirts & long sleeves. If you do not have, you will be given a skirt in your way in.
Free time for lunch at a traditional Greek tavern with your friends and family or shopping at Kastraki, a picturesque village near Meteora.
On our way back to Athens we will make a stop at the battlefield of Thermopylae to admire the statue of king Leonidas. Leonidas was a king of the Greek city-state of Sparta and had a notable participation in the Second Persian War, where he led the allied Greek forces to a last stand at the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) while attempting to defend the pass from the invading Persian army; he died at the battle and entered myth as the leader of the 300 Spartans. While the Greeks lost this battle, they were able to expel the Persian invaders in the following year.
We will be back to Athens late in the afternoon. The travel time is about 4,5 hours.

Christos was far more than just our driver today, he was an exceptional guide, teacher and storyteller who transformed our visit to the historic battlefields of Thermopylae into a deeply memorable experience. His knowledge of Greek history, culture and the surrounding regions was remarkable and he shared it with genuine passion and clarity. He didn’t simply take us from place to place, he enriched every moment. When we continued on to the breathtaking monasteries of Meteora, Christos again went above and beyond. He helped us evaluate which monasteries to visit based on physical effort, historical significance, and even the best spots for beautiful photo's for my wifey. His guidance was thoughtful, supportive and tailored perfectly to our needs. Beyond the history, Christos also impressed us with his local knowledge. My wifey asked some very specific questions about authentic Greek food including dessert and where locals actually eat and he delivered fantastic recommendations that only someone truly connected to the area could provide. Throughout the entire day we felt safe, comfortable and genuinely cared for. Christos wasn’t just a driver or guide, he was a teacher, historian and a gracious host. We are incredibly grateful for his expertise and kindness, and we will absolutely be recommending Christos to anyone visiting Greece. A truly outstanding experience - thanks for such a memorable day Christos.
George Remoundos was Amazing!!! He was very knowledgable, pointed out important landmarks and buildings for us. Stopped for a lot of photos. Accomodated the kids washroom breaks. He was the best!!! If you go to Meteora, make sure to go with George. You will love it.
We had a wonderful time today on our tour of Meteora and Thermopylae. What an unbelievable place Meteora is with the monasteries perched on the mountain side. Incredible! It was worth the long drive. Our driver, George was fantastic! He was friendly, knowledgeable and considerate. This made the trip the best it could be. He was one of the best drivers we have had!
We had an incredible experience visiting Meteora with Nikos. From the very beginning, everything was perfectly organized, and Nikos made the entire journey both enjoyable and informative. The trip itself was breathtaking—Meteora is truly one of the most unique and awe-inspiring places I’ve ever seen, with its towering rock formations and stunning monasteries. He went above and beyond to answer questions, offer recommendations, and ensure we experienced the best views and moments throughout the tour. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Greece. If you have the chance to explore Meteora with Nikos, don’t miss it—it’s an unforgettable experience!
We spent the day with our guide George Remoundos, who was so kind, easy to talk to, and extremely knowledgeable about our journey. The drive to Thermopylae and on to Meteora was a pleasure as George not only educated us about various sites along the way, but Greece as well. Meteora is fascinating and one of the most beautiful places we have seen. Definitely a must experience if you are traveling to Greece and we highly recommend George!
Meteora is a magical, beautiful place. ancient monasteries sitting on huge sandstone columns. A mystical place with great byzantine christian art and breathtaking views . It is about 3.5 hours drive from Athens. We did a round trip in 13 hours. Worth staying overnight if you have the time. Also enjoyed the stop t historical Thermopylae, where the 300 Spartans took their last stand. Our driver George was exceptional. Was on time, very nice, knowledgeable, patient and helpful. I should add, I've used Viator a few times over the past few years and haven't regretted. So far, very good experiences. I'd recommend it
Meteora is a really beautiful and interesting place to visit. A private tour I think is the best way to do it because you get to spend more time at each monastery and maximize your time. George our tour guide was professional, specially knowledgeable and very attentive. He explained a lot of the history and interesting facts while driving from place to place, and he took us to a good restaurant with delicious authentic food at a good price. I really recommend this tour and remember to ask for George if you want to have the best experience.
Pleasant trip Good driver Customisable tour Enjoyed the views Skipped the difficult climbing steps. But expensive
If you ever have the chance to tour Meteora with George, TAKE IT! Yes, it does make for a very long day leaving out of Athens. But the drive is on good roads, George is safe driver and most importantly, he is describing some of the history of the area while driving through it. The absolute star of this tour however, has to be Meteora. One word: STUNNING!
I am still stunned by Meteora. The views were amazing, unlike any other. The monasteries had so much detail it's almost unbelievable that they were built so long ago. Our driver George took good care of us especially since it was such a long drive, he provided lots of history about the lands on the way. I would definitely do it again, you can't get enough of the views looking to and down from the monasteries. Be prepared to hike! Much less to say about Thermopylae but it's in the way so why not...
Alex was an amazing guide, very knowledgeable and professional. Explained a lot of things on the way to the tour as well as being flexible with things we wanted to see
What an amazing experience that I managed to share with my young son. Our tour guide and driver Alex was by far the best driver I’ve managed to come across in Greece. Alex made contact with us the day before to confirm our pickup location in Athens city. On the morning of our pickup he was prompt and very professional and made sure that we will comfortable in his vehicle. Alex has an amazing amount of knowledgeable of Athens and of the surroundings areas, this made for great conversations to make our journey go pass quickly. His knowledge of ancient Greek history and mythology was exceptional. He gave us thorough explanations of the history behind Meteora and ensure that our time at each Monastery was well spent and not rushed. His explanation of the battle of Thermopylae was well received by my 9 year old son who enjoyed making the connections of specific locations on the battlefield between the Spartans and Persians. I would highly recommend Alex as your tour guide and driver. Thanks again Alex for an amazing experience. Regards Pete
All the great service provided by Apostoles ( Driver ). His a safe driver and an enjoyable person. He made us feel like friends.
Toils was such a nice driver, friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the places he took us. Provided us with cold water, and was a safe driver. Delivered us as close as possible to the places we wanted to see, and picked us up when we were through. Never rushed us through anything and took us off the beaten track. He also took lots of pics of us. So nice to be able to get there before the tour buses arrived. Tolis took us to the cutest restaurant in the small town near Meteora. Would highly recommend Tolis, and the visit to the Meteora Monasteries. It was definitely the highlight of our five night visit to Athens. Thank you Tolis.
We were picked up on time at our hotel and immediately felt comfortable with our guide Alex. On our way out of Athens he offered some history and pointed out monuments as we passed. The 4 hour ride went quickly, Alex allowed us time to sleep and also gave many facts about the countryside as we passed. This was during the heatwave last week and he made sure we had plenty of water and started w the easiest monastery to enter first. He offered suggestions as to which ones we might want to visit, took us to scenic spots for pictures and was always waiting when we exited. We elected to see 4 monasteries and he didn’t rush us to get back on the road as we had heard of some other tours. We then went into town and had a delicious lunch at a place he recommended. On the long ride back we stopped at Thermopylae and took pictures and he told us the historical significance of the site and the hot springs. Also, we had shared some of our itinerary in Athens and he text us later to give some recommendations on places we mentioned. Would certainly recommend using LS Tours and specifically Alex. We were worried about the long day and the heat and Alex made the experience easy and memorable.
This experience/tour was amazing and I highly recommend it! Alex was an outstanding guide that made our day even better. His knowledge is impressive and he went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable, happy, and got everything needed out of the day! He was the absolute best!
It’s a long review, but if you’re interested in this adventure, do your an It’s a long review, but if you’re interested in this adventure, do yourself a favor and read it. Excellent experience from start to finish. Communication was great before the trip even started. They let us know who and when we would be picked up and were even accommodating when we wanted to start a little later. Alex picked us up right on time. He was very pleasant to talk to along the way on our 4 hour trip. We stopped at a nice little rest area and got some what we believe were authentic Greek goodies. The ride went by fairly quickly and was filled with beautiful scenery. Fast forward to Meteora. Words cannot describe what we saw. Some reviews said they weren't that impressed and all I can say is holy cow man these monks built these amazing monasteries on top of these wonderful and God created rock formations a really long time ago and six of them are still standing and what an accomplishment. Pictures do not do it justice either. You have no idea what it's like unless you're there. The views on the way up the mountain were breathtaking and I'm a dude that rarely says "breathtaking". Alex was so very warm and friendly allowing us as much or as little time as we wanted to take pictures, tour the inside the monasteries and he gave us lots of information so we could decide which monasteries we would tour. Some are difficult to access and others are very easy. He laid it all out for us so we could make our own decisions. We eventually finished the tour and headed down to Kalambaka for dinner in a wonderful little outdoor cafe on the main road with a pretty fountain and lots of nearby shops. The only thing we would change is to plan an overnight trip and stay the night in Kalambaka. It was a great little village. The food at this cafe (i cannot remember the name but look for a beautiful fountain on the main road) was really good and the bathrooms must be the cleanest in Greece. If you don't know, that part of the world has awful public bathrooms and honestly I can't understand that but it is what it is, they are gross to say the very least. I wouldn't let my dog poop in most bathrooms that I saw out in public. This was not just Greece, Israel, Turkey... all awful. Except for this little cafe in Kalambaka. Cleaner than the best ones I have seen in the US. Ok enough about bathrooms. After we ate we got some more goodies at a small local bakery and they were really good. The place was on the corner directly across from the cafe'. I really do wish we had more time in Kalambaka but the day was already so long and Alex was probably ready to get home to his family. Even though we started later in the day than normal Alex still made sure we still had the full experience. We stopped by to visit Thermopylea and a hot spring then headed back to Athens. Don't get me wrong it was a long day but well worth it and we would pay more if we knew what a great time it would be. Do yourself a favor and if you have time do the two day tour or at least spend more time in Kalambaka. It was a wonderful little town and I would live there one day and run a little cafe' with a fountain when I retire. If my wife would come with me. It was truly a great time and Alex had a lot to do with it. We will always consider him our friend. Ask for Alex
most magical place , absolute privilege to experience this ! long drive , next time i would like to stay up there and see more of the monasteries
Michael picked us right on time at 7am and was the best host! Even though it was a very long day (13 hours!), he was in high spirits all day and was eager to help us with anything we needed. He answered all our random questions about Greek culture and helped my husband with his Greek grammar questions. He recommended a great restaurant in Kalambuka and my whole family agreed it was the best meal in Greece. I even texted him the next day to follow up on a loukamades restaurant he recommended and he immediately responded and sent me the address. Above and beyond service. Thank you, Michael, for a great time in Meteora! I highly recommend this tour.
Beautiful! George our guide was really interesting. He told us about Greek culture! I recommend you!
