Itinerary
The Corinth Canal is a waterway that crosses the narrow isthmus of Corinth to link the Gulf of Corinth to the Saronic Gulf. As such, the canal separates the Greek mainland from the Peloponnese, turning it into an island The canal, though executed in the late 19th century, has been a 2000-year-old dream. Before its construction, ships in the Aegean Sea that wanted to cross to the Adriatic or anchor in Corinth, a rich shipping city, had to circle the Peloponnese, which would prolong their journey an extra 185 nautical miles. It is believed that Periander, the tyrant of Corinth (602 BC), was the first to conceive of the idea of digging the Corinth Canal. As the project was too complicated given the limited technical capabilities of the times, Periander constructed the diolkos, a stone road which allowed ships to be transferred on wheeled platforms. The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea.
The archaeological site of Mycenae comprises the fortified acropolis and surrounding funerary and habitation sites, which are located mainly to its west and southwest. Most of the visible monuments date to the centre's great floruit, from 1350 to 1200 BC. Great Cyclopean walls surround the almost triangular acropolis, which is accessed from the northwest through the famous Lion Gate, the symbol of the Mycenaean rulers' power. The gate was named after the two opposing lions carved in relief and set into the relieving triangle, a typical feature of Mycenaean architecture, over the door.
The fortified citadel of ancient Mycenae, the seat of the mythical and mighty King Agamemnon. An impressive and well-preserved site, the city of Mycenae gave its name to an entire civilization. Admire sites such as the Tomb of Clytemnestra, the infamous Lion’s Gate, the Cyclopean walls and learn of their blood-stained past. In the second millennium BC, Mycenae was one of the major centres of Greek civilization, a military stronghold which dominated much of southern Greece, Crete, the Cyclades and parts of southwest Anatolia. The period of Greek history from about 1600 BC to about 1100 BC is called Mycenaean in reference to Mycenae. At its peak in 1350 BC, the citadel and lower town had a population of 30,000 and an area of 32 hectares.
‘Rich in Gold', the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon, first sung by Homer in his epics, is the most important and richest palatial centre of the Late Bronze Age in Greece. Its name was given to one of the greatest civilizations of Greek prehistory, the Mycenaean civilization, while the myths related to its history have inspired poets and writers over many centuries
The Lion Gate was the main entrance of the Bronze Age citadel of Mycenae, southern Greece. It was erected during the 13th century BC, around 1250 BC, in the northwest side of the acropolis and is named after the relief sculpture of two lionesses or lions in a heraldic pose that stands above the entrance. The Lion Gate is the sole surviving monumental piece of Mycenaean sculpture, as well as the largest sculpture in the prehistoric Aegean. It is the only monument of Bronze Age Greece to bear an iconographic motif that survived without being buried underground, and the only relief image which was described in the literature of classical antiquity, such that it was well known prior to modern archaeology.
The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is a theatre in the Greek city of Epidaurus, located on the southeast end of the sanctuary dedicated to the ancient Greek God of medicine, Asclepius. It is built on the west side of Cynortion Mountain, near modern Lygourio, and belongs to the Epidaurus Municipality. It is considered to be the most perfect ancient Greek theatre with regard to acoustics and aesthetics. The monument retains the characteristic tripartite structure of a Hellenistic theatre that has a theatron, orchestra, and skene. During Roman times, the theatre (unlike many Greek theatres) did not suffer any modifications.
The Treasury of Atreus or Tomb of Agamemnon is a large tholos or beehive tomb on Panagitsa Hill at Mycenae constructed during the Bronze Age around 1250 BC. The stone lintel above the doorway weighs 120 tons, with approximate dimensions 8.3 x 5.2 x 1.2m, the largest in the world. The tomb was used for an unknown period. Mentioned by the Roman geographer Pausanias in the 2nd century AD, it was still visible in 1879 when the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann discovered the shaft graves under the "agora" in the Acropolis at Mycenae.
The Epidaurus amphitheatre: Famous for its classic Greek construction and astounding acoustics. Enjoy the arts! Be captivated by the theatrical performances from Euripides, Sophocles, Aristophanes and Aeschylus. Drop a pin or coin on the stage... it will be heard even if you are sitting at the last seats of the theater. The Epidaurus Archaeological Museum: Noted for its reconstructions of temples and its columns with inscriptions. The Asclepius: The sanctuary dedicated to the ancient Greek demi-god of medicine Asclepius. A marvelous ancient medical retreat. The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is a theatre in the Greek city of Epidaurus, located on the southeast end of the sanctuary dedicated to the ancient Greek God of medicine, Asclepius. Archaeological Museum of Epidaurus is a museum in Epidaurus, in Argolis on the Peloponnese peninsula, Greece. The museum, noted for its reconstructions of temples and its columns and inscriptions, was established in 1902 and opened in 1909 to display artifacts unearthed in the ancient site of Epidaurus in the surrounding area. The museum is located in the archaeological site of the sanctuary of Asclepius. It hosts architectural parts from the temple and the buildings of the shrine, as well as inscribed columns and pedestals, altars, bronze medical equipment, sculpted votive offerings and tablets, representations of the Asclepius temple (4th c. BC), and sections of the Tholos. The museum was built by P. Kavadias during the period 1902-1909. More wings were constructed in time to house the sculptures, the pottery and the collection of inscriptions that came progressively came to light during the excavations on the site.
The Temple of Asclepius was a sanctuary in Epidaurus dedicated to Asclepius. It was the main holy site of Asclepius. The sanctuary at Epidaurus was the rival of such major cult sites as the Sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia and Apollo at Delphi. The temple was built in the early 4th century BC. If still in use by the 4th century AD, the temple would have been closed during the persecution of pagans in the late Roman Empire, when the Christian Emperors issued edicts prohibiting non-Christian worship.

The sleeping lion is the work of German sculptor Christian Ziegel, commissioned by King Louis, father of Otto, in memory of the Bavarian soldiers of Otto's dynasty, who died in Nafplio in 1833 of a typhoid epidemic. The locals, of course, say that what killed them was the many bitter things they ate, hence the other, unofficial name of the monument (echm) Agouroon.
One of the most well-preserved castles in all of Greece, Palamidi offers spectacular views of the city from its loopholes, wonderful routes inside and terrifying terrain in the hole-prison of Kolokotronis, Palamidi is a fortress to the east of the Acronauplia in the town of Nafplio in the Peloponnese region of southern Greece. Nestled on the crest of a 216-metre high hill, the fortress was built by the Venetians during their second occupation of the area (1686–1715). The fortress commands an impressive view over the Argolic Gulf, the city of Náfplio and the surrounding country. There are 913 steps in the winding stair from the town to the fortress. However, to reach the top of the fortress there are over one thousand, while locals in the town of Nafplion will say there are 999 steps to the top of the castle.

Theodore was a great guide. Driving was excellent in heavy Athens traffic. Tour description said bring water, but he had plenty in the van. Very friendly and informative.
This is a great day trip from Athens! There are such a variety of things to do and see outside of Athens. Stelios was a great driver full of interesting information and so willing to make our experience great.
Our guide/driver Theodore was very amiable, flexible and helpful. He customized our itinerary to fit our particular interests. While driving we had some interesting conversations with Theodore about Greek history and Greece today. He even taught us a few Greek words.
Nikos was a knowledgeable and courteous driver. He was on-time, a safe driver, very informative and interesting with historical information when visiting the ancient sites on the tour. Nikos is a professional.
We had a fabulous day with Stelios as our guide. He called to confirm pick up time and was on time and very friendly. He gave us a lot of history along the drive so we were better prepared for the sites we saw today. Small group ended up being just my husband and I so we were able to tailor the experience to what we wanted. Stelios was very accommodating. Each archaeologic site has a lot to offer and see. Wear comfortable walking shoes as each site has plenty of walking and diverse terrain to navigate. A fun way to spend our last day in Greece!
Nikos did an amazing job. It was quite scary with the fires. He kept us updated the entire time, by keeping track of the radio. He explained a lot about Greece, politics, history etc. He was flexible to change the itinerary after the fires prevented visiting certain sites. He allowed us to find our own restaurants, no kick back. He was also very keen to show us other sites in Athens. Nothing was too much effort.
If I could give 100 stars on this website I would. Alex was our guide and we had the best time ever - I’ve been to Athens many times and wanted to arrange a tour for my husband to Napflio - Alex was very knowledgeable and accommodating he told us many things about the Greek culture and history which was fascinating. Napflio was beautiful just like I remembered it 20 years ago. Alex recommended a great restaurant for lunch which we enjoyed and we spent some time at the fortress where you can see all of the city. We had such a great time with Alex he was so nice, his driving was impeccable and his knowledge of Greece was above and beyond, we recommend this tour and highly recommend you ask for Alex when booking. Thank you for a wonderful day Alex we really appreciated it. Julie & Rocc from Australia
Very small group Theodur our driver was extremely engaging, knowledgeable on world cultures, and Greek history and culture. He was a safe driver, cheerful, and flexible, very easy-going. We were fortunate to have only four total in our group, and so we were able to expand our time at Epidavros, which is important for us in particular to spend more time at. After the hectic time spent in Athens this was a very welcome respite. Beautiful countryside. The history of Mycenae and Epidavros is worthwhile and the sites a more extensive walk than what you might think , be prepared for that.
Our trip to Mycenae with Theodor was great. Mycenae and sites were amazing. The castle view in Nafplio was spectacular. Recommend going!
We had a wonderful day with Theodore. He was great about answering our inquiries site to site. A good sense of humor was a plus!
Great day trip from Athens. Corinth Canal, Mycenae Archaeological Park, Treasury of Atreus, and tomb of Agamemnon, and an impressive visit to the best Ancient Greek amphitheater we’ve seen. The 19th century fort on a mountaintop near Nafplio and the mountain scenery and spectacular views of the bay were an unexpected bonus. Our driver / guide, Theodore, was very knowledgeable, personable, and accommodating throughout the long day.
Had a great trip to Mycenae, Nafplio and Epidauros with Themos. Would definitely go with him again. He couldn’t have been nicer and great recommendations for food.
We had a great day with Christos Z. starting with him sending us a very clear picture of our driver and his van. He was punctual. Christos had so much to share with us along the way and took us to some great sites. Highly recommend booking him. He was fabulous!
This a great way to see the other part of Greece that is not islands. This country has so much to offer besides beaches and this tour let's you have an insight to this part.
Our driver Aris was great! Gave us great background information on each site we stopped at. Gave us plenty of time at each stop. We had a great day!
We loved everything we managed to get to see but we felt so rushed. We definitely expected more from this tour for what we paid. We were given 45 to 60 minutes to complete each stop (a total of 3 stops), with just enough time in Nafplion to have lunch and return to Athens. We asked to go to the castle and were denied. We arrived back at our hotel a little over earlier than we expected from reading the itinerary of the tour.
Our private tour of the Corinth Canal and Naplflio was great. Yiannis is professional and super informative. We also appreciated his flexibility to tailor this experience for us. We booked him again for Poseidon trip! Can’t recommend enough!
We were a bit short on time so we opted to skip Mycenae but enjoyed the other spots we toured especially Epidaurus.
We enjoyed our trip to ancient Corinth, Epidaurus and Nafplio. He’s a great driver, had great suggestions along the way for the sites we would see. He was friendly and very helpful.
Our guide yanis was so great!! We've booked the ancient Corinth and Nafplio. We had such a wonderful day and would definitely recommend this tour for everyone.
Great full day with kind and considerate Yannis! Had 4 fascinating stops with beautiful (short) drives between and then ended at a beach near Nafplio. Bring your swimsuit because the water was clean, clear, and warm . Yannis dropped us at a restaurant for lunch which was the best food we’ve had in 10 days in Greece. Highly recommend this tour
This tour was amazing! It was a great trip for varying ages and abilities. There were 7 of us from teens to 70s and we all had a great time on this private tour. There was something for everyone to see at all the sites. If someone wanted to explore a little more there were opportunities for that. There were also great spots in the shade and in cafes for those who didn’t want to. Everyone had a great time exploring the historical sites, enjoying great views, and shopping! It was very hot but the air conditioned van and water provided were great. Our tour guide, Chris, was also wonderful! He was super flexible and knowledgeable. He did not rush us at all and we actually went longer than the listed tour time! He even took us to a couple extra sites that we were interested in. He gave us great information on the drives and made us all feel welcomed. He also helped us arrange a hotel to port transfer. I would recommend this tour and Chris to anyone!
This was a fantastic trip! Our guide Ioannis was perfect and helped us navigate as we saw Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Nafplio! We were able to cover lots of ground and enjoyed hai excellent recommendation for a local restaurant that was amazing!
The car was large and comfortable. Our tour guide for the journey, Panos, was an absolute pleasure to go on a tour with, definitely one of the highlights of our vacation! He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, kind, helpful, and very adaptive to our needs. We had a lovely time travelling through the Peloponnese with him!
It was great experience, Kosta was flexible to provide us the most of experience, was helpful and well organised. Highly recommended!
Costas our tour guide was wonderful and went out of his way to keep us happy. He was very informative about the areas and we had a great day…and a delicious lunch.
The guide/driver is amazing. He is punctual and find us a roast lamb meal. At the end of the tour, we are dropped off at the pier for the next leg of the journey.
Such a fantastic experience and a wonderful way to see it. Andreas picked us up in his very clean, well maintained car. He drove swiftly and safely to our first stop. Along the way he shared his very thorough knowledge of Greek history. Throughout the entire day, Andreas was kind, helpful and very personable. This excursion was a splurge for us, but we are SO glad we did it.
This was definitely an amazing way to see the ruins. Andreas was a fantastic, personable, extremely knowledgeable guide. We learned so much history along our tour. He was very accommodating, including stopping for sunscreen! His vehicle was clean and very well maintained. He was a safe and courteous driver. My daughter and I loved our experience and thank Andreas for a wonderful adventure.
It was excellent to have a car to ourselves, to see all of the sites at our own pace, and to do so without being part of a large bus group. Our driver Costas was friendly and knowledgeable, which made it better yet. Would definitely do a tour with Yomadic and Costas again!
We had an amazing time! Costas was lovely and very knowledgeable, and we really enjoyed spending the day with him! We were able to see the Corinth Canal, Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Nafplio all in one day. Such a treat to have a car to ourselves and extra flexibility. Highly recommend!
This was our third tour with Yomadic and it did not disappoint. This was our second tour with Chris our favorite tour guide. We started with Mycenae and after visiting the museum we went to the Lions Gate and explored the most well preserved city of Greece. Next Chris pulled over to a roadside fruit stand and bought us a bag of the best juiciest oranges we have ever experienced. Then we were headed to epidarus where we experienced Ascipleus stadium and ancient hospital. Very impressive how the segregated wards to limit the spread of disease. Next up gelato at Napoli that was spectacular. Then we headed to see a castle where we elected to climb a thousand steps to the top. Chris offered to drop us off at the top and have us walk down but we wanted a workout. On our way back we visited a seaside tavern that Chris took us to and we enjoyed some wonderful seafood. Finally we made a quick stop to the isthmus of the Corinth canal. to take some pictures of the engineering marvel.
I did this tour with Christos and Panos. They were great guys and had a lot of knowledge to share. We visited several very cool places and had a nice dinner at a place that Christos knew about up on a mountain. It was a really fun day.
A great full day tour of notable Greek landmarks. The Ampitheatre of Epidaurus and the Fortress of Palamidi in Nafplio alone would have been worth the price of admission. Our driver Chris was absolutely the best. He was informative and entertaining, providing historical background and tales of jealous Greek Gods behaving badly. Not an inexpensive tour, but well worth the time.
We just got back from a most-excellent day-trip away from Athens to see Mycenae and Epidauros, with a lunch break in Nafpliio. Our driver Chris was knowledgeable and affable, and flexible enough to take us where we chose along the way. I can’t recommend this enough: you get all the benefits of having your own car with none of the challenges - no rental drop off or pickup (which I had done just a day earlier for a trip to Olympia!), and Chris took us right up to the doorstep of everyplace we wanted to go. Not to mention having someone else who’s a pro fight Athenian traffic! A perfect experience, thank you Chris!
The pick up was right on time, the tour planned for the day was fine, and we had a fine lunch. The van we rode in was uncomfortable [lacked good, working shock absorbers, and the sliding door didn’t shut tight] and our driver did not share much historical information of what we were seeing at each site, unless prompted by us. We learned more from our own research than from our tour guide/driver.
Dimitrios Dimopoulos was an excellent guide and very knowledgeable about the history of the area. He provided tips about what not to miss. He was very attentive to meeting us after each historical site. He also suggested a fabulous place for lunch and later dessert in Napfolio. A wonderful day!
We had the pleasure of having a second tour with Christos. The tour is all worth it and we had good historical information from Christos. He is not only a good driver but also a good person that cares for his customers and gives that extra to make each tour as special as possible. Thanks again Yomadic and Christos, for this experience.
Chris was a wonderful guide. We had a great time. He catered to all our needs, gave us great recommendations, and was friendly.
I'm not necessarily a typical traveler. There were some places where I knew wanted to spend much longer than others, and so I requested an itinerary that was a bit different than the advertised one. Our gracious, English-speaking driver was incredibly accommodating. He was happy to follow the itinerary that we gave him, but he also helpfully suggested a few other things that had not been on our itinerary that ended up being great additions to our tour. We also had a bit of a change-up in our plans that necessitated seeking a refund for a portion of the tour. Andreas was exceptionally helpful in ensuring that we could make the partial refund happen, across some confusing international banking issues. Overall, we had a very positive experience with Yomadic Tours and would happily recommend their services to anyone!
Andreas has a depth of knowledge and the ability to convey history in storyteller mode. The places we visited were fantastic and it was great to be able to see the places about which I have read. Mycenae was fantastic as was the Fort at Nafplio. The scenery is beautiful and the stories about the Greeks and the Persians came alive. Highly recommend!
We had about 4 days to see the sites of Athens, so chose this road trip on the last day, a beautiful drive in the Peloponnese region! We were four people, picked up at the destination of our cruise, in a comfortable Mercedes van. We added the option of a licensed guide. We had a short stop at the Corinth canal on the way. Next, Mycenae is on a mountain and the agricultural scenery is so wonderful, and the site is spectacular and very interesting, it’s very different from any of the other archaeological sites we saw on our trip!!! Our guide was terrific, Senterous (sorry-spelling?) and Kristos was awesome as well, so kind and a very good driver. Our guide was very knowledgeable and quite detailed with his historical presentation. The tomb that is a couple minutes away was fantastic as well. Then, on to pretty coastal town of Nafplio where we wandered about just a bit and had a nice lunch to restore our energy, and we checked out the medieval castle above the city. Then it was on to Epidaurus and the sanctuary of Asclepius. The theater was the best part. This was a LOT to pack in on one day for sure! We were interested in the history so we dove in a bit deeper, which resulted in our trip being about 11 hours. (When you added in a bit of traffic, and our hotel was downtown, near the Ancient Agora. The guides did let us know we were on track for a longer trip.) If this would be too much for your group, the private tour does let you tailor your options. All in all, a very good outing!
Our exuberant driver/guide, Theodore, enlivened this wonderful journey to multiple spectacular sites of antiquity. This was a fabulous experience, a major highlight of our trip to Greece. Don't miss this. A top recommendation.
What a wonderful all day trip to see the sites outside of the city. Michael was great, friendly informative and super helpful. The day ended in Nafplio, with a relaxing lunch and some shopping. Restaurant and ice cream recommendations from Michael were spot on. Thank you!
We highly recommend this company. We had a wonderful visit exploring the ancient sites with a tour with Andreas. He managed to organise this for us last minute. He was patient, punctual, and very informative and knowledgeable. We would certainly book a tour again.
We did not expect that this would be the best day in Greece. Unbelievable experience.Great job from Yomadic.
We love the whole experience, learning more and more birth place of the modern culture. Architecture, art and history, intertwined from neolithic in stone age to Bronze age through Roman and post Roman Empire. The views and places are breath taking, scenery is absolutely outstanding and complemented with realistic sculptures and marvelous structures erected ancient Greeks. Definitively will repeat and Highly recommended to experience. Additionally to make things even better our guide Andreas Siogkas was far from spectacular to Extraordinary, Friendly and Amazing Knowledge about History and his Culture, sincerely Bravo !!! Thanks so much for everything.
Wonderful day with Andreas. He was professional, knowledgeable, and courteous. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Greece!
We did the half day to mycenae option as we were nearing the end of our trip and had an amazing time. Our driver Kostas was knowledgeable and very nice to talk to. He made our travel day very simple and also took us to see the canal as well. He gave us interesting knowledge on our drive and after the walkthrough gave us information regarding the site as well. If you have the time definitely do the full 8H tour though we definitely realized Corinth is worth the time if you can spare it!
