The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historical significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The word acropolis is from the Greek words ἄκρον (akron, "highest point, extremity") and πόλις (polis, "city"). The term acropolis is generic and there are many other acropoleis in Greece. While there is evidence that the hill was inhabited as far back as the fourth millennium BC, it was Pericles (c. 495–429 BC) in the fifth century BC who coordinated the construction of the buildings whose present remains are the site's most important ones, including the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. The Parthenon and the other buildings were seriously damaged during the 1687 siege by the Venetians during the Morean War when gunpowder being stored in the Parthenon by the Ottomans was hit by a cannonball and exploded.
On the top of this sacred hill, proudly stands the Parthenon, which is the epitome of ancient Greek architecture, where you will experience the greatness of ancient Greece captured on every piece of marble. An architectural jewel that hosts the best of what the human spirit and genius has ever conceived, an open embrace that awaits its famed sister marbles to welcome them home again.
The Temple of Athena Nike is a temple on the Acropolis of Athens, dedicated to the goddesses Athena and Nike. Built around 420 BC, the temple is the earliest fully Ionic temple on the Acropolis. It has a prominent position on a steep bastion at the southwest corner of the Acropolis to the right of the entrance, the Propylaea. In contrast to the Acropolis proper, a walled sanctuary entered through the Propylaea, the Victory Sanctuary was open, entered from the Propylaea's southwest wing and from a narrow stair on the north. The sheer walls of its bastion were protected on the north, west, and south by the Nike Parapet, named for its frieze of Nikai celebrating victory and sacrificing to their patroness, Athena and Nike.
The Erechtheion is an ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens in Greece which was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon.
The Theater of Dionysus is an ancient Greek theatre in Athens. It is built on the south slope of the Acropolis hill, originally part of the sanctuary of Dionysus Eleuthereus. The first orchestra terrace was constructed on the site around the mid- to late-sixth century BC, where it hosted the City Dionysia. The theatre reached its fullest extent in the fourth century BC under the epistates of Lycurgus when it would have had a capacity of up to 17,000, and was in continuous use down to the Roman period. The theatre then fell into decay in the Byzantine era and was not identified, excavated, and restored to its current condition until the nineteenth century.
The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone Roman theatre structure located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis of Athens. The building was completed in AD 161 and then renovated in 1950.
The Arch of Hadrian, most commonly known in Greek as Hadrian's Gate, is a monumental gateway resembling a Roman triumphal arch. It spanned an ancient road from the center of Athens, Greece, to the complex of structures on the eastern side of the city that included the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Continuing with the stunning Calimarmaro or as it is called today, the Panathenaic Stadium, the house of the first modern Olympic games, made of Pentelic marble in which the Olympic ideals are still reflected today.
After leaving the beautiful Calimarmaro behind us, we will drive up to Lycabettus hill where you will enjoy the beautiful panoramic view of the city and admire the combination of ancient and modern Athens from above.
Traveling thousands of years ahead, to the Hellenic Parliament building that houses the Greek Parliament in an impressive building in downtown Athens overseeing Syntagma Square, protected by the presidential guard that consists of two soldiers dressed in the traditional Greek combat uniform, standing stationary and guarding beside the tomb of the unknown soldier. The two guards perform the guard change ceremony every hour with impressive accuracy and agility.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a war memorial located in Syntagma Square in Athens, in front of the Old Royal Palace. It is a cenotaph dedicated to the Greek soldiers killed during war. It was sculpted between 1930 and 1932 by sculptor Fokion Rok. The tomb is guarded by the Evzones of the Presidential Guard.
Syntagma Square (Constitution Square) is the central square of Athens. The square is named after the Constitution that Otto, the first King of Greece, was obliged to grant after a popular and military uprising on 3 September 1843. It is located in front of the 19th century Old Royal Palace, housing the Greek Parliament since 1934. Syntagma Square is the most important square of modern Athens from both a historical and social point of view, at the heart of commercial activity and Greek politics. The name Syntagma alone also refers to the neighbourhood surrounding the square.
The Academy of Athens is Greece's national academy and the highest research establishment in the country. It was established in 1926 and operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. The Academy's main building is one of the major landmarks of Athens.
The National Library of Greece is situated near the center of the city of Athens. It was designed by the Danish architect Theophil Freiherr von Hansen, as part of his famous Trilogy of neo-classical buildings including the Academy of Athens and the original building of the Athens University. It was founded by Ioannis Kapodistrias.
Optional visit for 1 hour by selecting the "Best of + Acropolis Museum 5H" option of this tour. The total duration of the tour by selecting this option is about 5 hours. The entrance tickets are not included. The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. It also lies over the ruins of part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens. The museum was founded in 2003 while the Organization of the Museum was established in 2008. It opened to the public on 20 June 2009. More than 4,250 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres.
Optional visit for 30 minutes at the Ancient Agora by selecting the "Best of + Anc. Agora 5H" option of this tour. This option also includes the Temple of Hephaestus. The ancient Agora of Athens (also called the Classical Agora) is an ancient Greek agora. It is located to the northwest of the Acropolis, and bounded on the south by the hill of the Areopagus and on the west by the hill known as the Agoraios Kolonos, also called Market Hill. The Agora's initial use was for a commercial, assembly, or residential gathering place.
Optional visit for 30 minutes at the Temple of Hephaestus by selecting the "Best of + Anc. Agora 5H" option of this tour. This option also includes the Ancient Agora of Athens. The Temple of Hephaestus or Hephaisteion is a well-preserved Greek temple dedicated to Hephaestus; it remains standing largely intact today. It is a Doric peripteral temple, and is located at the north-west side of the Agora of Athens, on top of the Agoraios Kolonos hill.

We did this our first day in Athens and I thought it was a really good tour to get us knowledgeable about the area. We got the major things we needed to see done and then we had time to go back and spend more time on things we wanted to see more later in the week(Acropolis museum). Our guide was fabulous and gave us some follow-up input and was very nice and helpful. The picture he took of us overlooking the viewpoint of the Acropolis is our favorite picture of us as a couple we've had this entire trip. He found a great location for us to watch the changing up the guard and explained what was going to happen. So many interesting areas he pointed out. Kind of a behind the scenes input.
We had an excellent half-day tour of Athens, and John made the entire experience fantastic. His English was outstanding, and he was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing great history and context at every stop. Since we only had a half day, time management was key, and John made sure we saw all the major must-see sights in Athens without ever making us feel rushed. I highly recommend this tour—and John—to anyone looking to maximize their time in the city!
Bill was great, he was patient and very informative. Took us to all the sites and was prepared with water and umbrellas.
Christos was amazing! Friendly, knowledgeable and flexible! He gave suggestions, but did not pressure us into our itinerary. We also got to stop at a local bakery. Amazing day! Worth the value of having someone else navigate the city so we could enjoy sightseeing while on our layover flight. Thanks again to Christos.
Nikos was THE BEST! Highly recommend this great day in Athens!
This month, as we planned to embark on an extended Mediterranean cruise, we had the good luck to spend our first 3 or 4 days in Athens - a destination we always wished to explore first-hand. We realized with our limited window, we needed expert and knowledgeable guidance - which came to us through our outstanding guide, George. We had numerous tours to choose from, but felt lucky we had George by our side, not merely navigating Athens streets and neighborhoods, but capturing the stories, history, background, cultural references and insights that a very experienced guide can deliver. He did it with kindness, humor and patience from start to finish, and made our experience as perfect as we hoped exploring Athens' ancient and more contemporary locales.
Nikos was a wonderful guide his local knowledge was wonderful!! We had a great time and he even told us about a wonderful restaurant for lunch only three blocks from our hotel! Food and service were terrific! Thanks Viatour
Our driver and guide’s name was George Remoundos he was great. George picked us up at our hotel and gave us a tour of the main attractions in Athens Greece. We had time to stop and take pictures at a few locations. The highlight of the tour was seeing the Acropolis on our own. George picked us up from the Acropolis when we were finished and drove us back to our hotel.
George Remoundos was a fantastic tour guide! He was knowledgeable about the history and places on our tour. We were late for the tour pick up and George was flexible and understanding.
Was a great way to see Athens and the Acropolis. So glad to we chose a private tour. Adding an optional guide was important to get a perspective on the museum and the Acropolis.
Christos was awesome. He knew his Athens history and got us to all the highlights. The day started rainy and he had umbrellas if we needed them.
Our afternoon with Bill was awesome, his historical knowledge and greek passion provided us with the best day in Athens experiences ~ ones we will cherish forever!
This was a private tour- just me and my husband. George was our driver and guide- excellent communication before we even arrived in Athens about which tickets to pre purchase and the time slots, which saved us time waiting in the lines. George dropped us off at several sites and told us where and when to meet him when we were finished. Very knowledgeable about each site and the city and he answered all of our questions thoroughly. Highly recommend this tour and George.
We thoroughly enjoyed our private tour with Thanasis. He was knowledgeable, friendly and has a good sense of humour. He made sure we saw many sights on our 4 hour tour. The day was very rainy but Thanasis was a ray of sunshine.
The experience was exceptional. George served as an outstanding guide, demonstrating extensive knowledge and genuine enthusiasm for Athens and its historical significance. We are very pleased that we selected this tour to gain a deeper understanding of this remarkable city.
My husband and I were in Athens in September and we went on The Best of Athens tour with Christos. It was absolutely an amazing time! He was a terrific guide and he made it so fun for us. He was very knowledgeable and patient letting us spend as much or as little time as we wanted at any particular place, and he was willing to do as much or as little as we wanted in terms of adding to the tour. He was super personable, fun to be with and easy to be around. He made our trip so enjoyable! We loved this tour so much and cannot recommend it more highly especially if you have Christos as your tour guide.
Mostly a drive by too many sights. Our driver Stephanos was excellent with communication and provided us with both history and cultural information. He was very clear with meeting places and very prompt. He gave us good recommendations for sights, restaurants and strategies.
Thanasis was our guide and is amazing. He navigated so that we were able to get in so much in our tour and he did a great job of explaining everything. We were able to do a couple of extra things like the Sunday changing of the guard and the changing of the guard at the Presidents house. We had a wonderful time and feel like it could not have gone better. Thanasis is great!
Tour guide extremely knowledgeable. Hit all the key points of interest. Convenient port pickup and return.
Great experience. Thanasis was a wonderful guide, very knowledgeable and seemed to truly care about us enjoying ourselves. I would definitely recommend him.
Our guide Thanasis was excellent. He was very professional and knowledgable. He structured our trip with areas we wanted to see and was very cheerful and upbeat.
This was an amazing experience. Thanasis was a wonderful, informative, and professional guide. I highly recommend! Thank you!
Very knowledgeable driver. Plenty of time for stops for food and photos. Managed to get all the main sights in, in the half day we were together.
Excellent tour, driver Christos was amazing and took us to all the major sights with stops for photos. Very knowledgeable and friendly.
Was a great tour. Our tour guide George Remoundas was perfect. Very accommodating and knowledgeable. Even sent us to a great place for lunch. Highly recommend!!
I highly recommend this service, it is on the more expensive side but its worth every cent. The group tours are good but it was so nice being able to go into a museum and walk around without the hassle of a big group. When we had had enough we just messaged our drive and he was there to pick us up with a smile and a bottle of water. You do have to arrange the ticket's for the place's you go but the driver can do it for you. All in all a really good day.
It was a wonderful time. I loved experiencing the city this way. It was very organized, and making the stops in between the city while in a private car was awesome. The guide was very knowledgeable and gave us time to also do independent site seeing. Communication was seamless. Thank you Bill for the amazing time
Very nice experience…I was travelling with my sister and the guide/driver, Panos, tailored the trip to what we were looking to see within our short time in Athens. Highly recommend!
We had the best day exploring Athens with our private tour! I would highly recommend it! . Christos was our guide and driver and was wonderful
George Remoundos Was friendly, informative, and great company
Our driver was very knowledgeable with the history of Athens and showed us all of the important sites. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and answered all our questions. He was very friendly and personable. We hope to have him on a future tour. He was the best!
Best way to see the highlights of Athens. There was a lot of walking uphill and steps to get to all the attractions. And the you have to walk down. Good shoes are a must. But the experience is so very worth it. Even though we went I. The “off” season it was crowded esp with bus tours. Buy your Acropolis tickets in advance and if you are a senior and from the US you do NOT qualify for the senior discount. Our guide Nico, was amazing, a fountain of knowledge and was able to switch up the itinerary as we booked a private tour. The best way to go. He was courteous, polite and very professional. Love this tour company and highly recommend it.
Cris was very polite but he is not a tour guide, it’s a good way to get to all main attractions, but it lacks the story behind each attraction.
We booked a private guide and driver for half day to see the major sites in Athens. Our driver/guide was Panos. He communicated well with us before the tour with timing and advance tickets to visit the Parthenon. Panos drove us to all of the major tourist sites. He would do a thorough explanation of what we were visiting and the logistics. He would drive us to each site and drop us off and we would explore on our own, then meet up with him where he had dropped us off. I would just text him and he’d bring the car to the meeting spot. Throughout the afternoon, as we drove to the next spot, he would point out different buildings and explain what each building represented. His English was excellent and very easy to understand. I would recommend this tour as long as you understand that you are not getting a guided tour with you at each site. You do get a great explanation from Panos as you drive to each site. He was very professional and timely with all of our dealings. He was also very knowledgeable and we learned a great deal from him.
~Christos Tzimourtos Was amazing and kind! He showed us all of Athens in a short time and we are so happy! 100/10 recommend him! Ask for him on your tour
This was a great tour of Athens. Thanks to our guide Nikos. He was so knowledgeable about the history of Athens and was super personable. Would highly recommend this tour. It was four hours well spend and we would all recommend you ask for Nikos to be your guide! Thanks
This was a great way to see and learn about the sights in Athens. NIkos our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly!
What a great day. We had a message from our driver, Yiannis, before we disembarked to aid in locating him. While he was not a “guide”, he was so knowledgeable and a great conversationalist! The Acropolis was indescribable, and the addition of the Acropolis Museum was worth the time and money! The city tour in the afternoon was a great ending to the day. Highly recommend!
Stephanos was a very knowledgeable tour guide. He took us all over Athens and gave us great recommendations for our stay.
Vangelis, our driver was on time and showed us all sites promised. We had a wonderful tour of Athens.
Thanasis was a excellent tour guide and knowledgeable. Also very friendly and courteous. We had an enjoyable day. Until next time.
We had the best guide George Remoundos ! We learned a lot and he had an incredible amount of knowledge and history . Took us to all the sites . Very interesting and informative. Thank you George ! Also for your patience & the rescue when we got turned around !!
It was very interesting and informative. Such history and our guide George knew all the answers. If you plan on booking ask for George such a great guide. When we got off track( lost our fault) He made it right ! Thank you George for everything!!
George is a fantastic driver/guide. So much information and very organized. He was able to show us so many varied and interesting parts of Athens. It was a beautiful experience.
This was an excellent time. We had the car to ourselves and our driver, Thanasis, was fantastic.Very knowledgable and very kind and considerate
Tour was excellent. We were picked up & returned to our hotel. Tour guide was top notch, knowledgeable and knew his way around Athens which is important if u have seen the traffic. Dont miss the changing of the guard stop. Purchase Acropolis tix when reserving tour. Its much easier.
The best way to see the city. Enjoyed our guides knowledge. It was so relaxing to be shown the sites and to not have to worry what we see next
Vangelis was great! He communicated with us from beginning to end to ensure we had everything we needed We appreciated all of his information on Athens.
Excellent navigation through the busy streets of Athens. Leaves free time to explore the location stops.
