After noticing lots of murals and graffiti in Athens, we decided to book this tour for our last morning. It turned out to be just the two of us with our guide Giannis. We spent an interesting few hours seeing parts of the city we had not been to, and learning about the murals, along with lots of information about both the history and current situation in Athens and Greece.
Tour guide was super informative AND a street artist herself! She explained the history, innovation and future of the street art scene. Great tour and flexible for drinks and snacks along the way!
This was a true highlight of our week in Athens. We are seeing the city with fresh eyes, recognizing street artists’ signature styles, and know so much more about the city’s history and political symbolism. We sometimes hesitate to take guided tours because we’ve been on formulaic ones in the past; we’re all so glad we decided to book with Awesome Athens because this was the type of experience we look for! Thomas and his partner are deeply immersed in and enthusiastic about Athens’ street art culture. Do not miss your chance to tour with them!
Thomas was an excellent guide. Knowledgeable, pleasant, willing to accommodate all our needs and provided excellent recommendations. Best of all he took us through Athens neighborhoods and sites that would have been difficult for us to discover in such a short period of time.
Athens is a city where thousands of years of history are always present. What surprised me was how much the street art brought that history into the Athens of today. Thomas was warm, personable, and engaging. He shared stories from history and his own experience, explained techniques and context, and welcomed our questions. His love for street art was clear. He also took good care of us along the way, finding shade, helping us get great views and photos, and watching out for us as we crossed busy streets. They had opened this time just for us to fit our schedule. I encouraged them to be creative about where we met and what we explored. That took us a bit off the usual route and into neighborhoods next to the most visited parts of Athens. As repeat visitors, we loved seeing parts of the city that were new to us. I especially recommend adding the graffiti workshop with Kalliopi. She made trying something new easy and fun. The hardest part was deciding what to create! The workshop also gave us time to take in what we had just learned. We moved from looking at street art to making something ourselves. All three of us are adults, and we had great fun letting out our inner children and playing for a while. Two weeks later, I’m still thinking about how much more I understand about Athens because of our time with Thomas and Kalliopi. I’m also thinking about how much the three of us enjoyed creating these memories together. For repeat visitors who have noticed the murals, smaller street art, and graffiti all over Athens and wondered about the world behind them, I highly recommend doing both the walk and the workshop.
Great tour if you're looking for something that isn't focused on the Acropolis or food tour. Visited areas I would not have seen on my own. Enjoyed learning the stories and meanings behind the murals and street art. Thomas was very knowledgeable about the art and also shared suggestions for local restaurants, shops and places to visit outside of Athens. Would highly recommend.
If you're into street art and want to see another side of Athens you cannot miss this. It was very interesting to learn about all the artists active in the city, the community behind and the collaborations they do. Would recommend it every day of the week if you want an alternative tour through some of the vibrant neighborhoods of Athens.
Thomas's knowledge of Athens' street art scene was vast: on our tour, he pointed out recurring artists by name as we spotted their work throughout the city--INO, Aiva, Sonke--and shared fascinating background on each of them. He knew which neighborhoods to take us to for the best pieces, and had great insight into how each artist's style connected to the area's history. Beyond the art itself, Thomas gave us wonderful local color on every neighborhood we passed through, adding context that made the whole experience feel much richer. A fantastic tour for anyone interested in street art and the city's creative pulse!
We had a really cool experience with Thomas. We walked through a lot of neighborhoods. Thomas is a street art passionate guy . He has so many cool stories about street arts, performers as well as the neighborhoods. We definitely recommend the 3 hours walk tour.
A very interesting tour with a really nice guide! We got to see different neighborhoods and definitely learned a lot! Thanks
Seeing Athens through the lens of street art was an amazing experience. Thomas, my guide, took me through different neighborhoods and showed me murals, graffiti, and street art that tell the story of Athens in a way you don’t get from monuments alone. Many of the works reflected the city’s political history over the last 30 to 40 years — corruption, protest, government overreach, and the tension between citizens and power. Others were memorials to people who have passed, turning public walls into places of memory. It was Athens from a different angle: raw, political, personal, and alive.
Thomas was a great guide, super knowledgeable. We loved seeing a street level, less touristy version of Athens, and Thomas gave us some great recommendations for the city. Highly recommend.
Thomas is clearly an authority on the history of graffiti, street art, and murals in the Athens neighborhoods. He has a great unhurried approach, encourages questions and feedback, and a great sense of humor. He has great knowledge of history of neighborhoods. He and Kalliopi have packaged great photos and recommendations of all sorts of things to do in Athens. It’s an awesome tour, not to be missed!
This was truly one of the most memorable experiences of my trip to Athens. Whether you have been here before or not, I highly recommend this tour as an incredible lens through which to appreciate the city and its more recent history. I can see people from all different backgrounds and interests appreciating this tour, as street art speaks to so many current themes in the world. The tour covers a huge portion of the city, including neighborhoods we were not likely to venture into on our own, with our guide, Kalliope, regularly pointing out more places to explore later. And just when we felt we needed a break, she was already taking us to a favorite coffee stop - and explaining more about Greek coffee culture! If this is your first visit to Athens or Greece, this would certainly be a wonderful experience to orient you. As someone who has been to Greece many times (and has a background in art history), I felt this tour presented a much deeper understanding of the modern Greek perspective, as well as offered a crash course in mural art, its history, and the significance of its messaging. Kalliope also clearly knew many of the artists personally and understood the medium from her own experience, and was therefore able to explain their work from an authentic place. Thank you so much, Kalliope, for your invaluable and truly unique perspective on mural art and artists. I highly recommend this tour and would even take it again in the future - there will always be more street art and more it has to say to the world, and I look forward to hearing more from your viewpoint!
Such a great way to learn more about the “other side” of Greek history and culture. A great complement to the archaeological and ancient history that dominates the tourist perspective. Kalliope was a phenomenal guide sharing insights about the art, the community, life and politics. Highly highly highly recommended. Very grateful to have had the opportunity.
This is a great tour for anyone who is interested in art, architecture or contemporary Greek politics and protests. Much of the street art you see has a political message. Katerina is a wonderful and knowledgeable guide who speaks fluent English and is herself a street artist. Even if you are familiar with the neighborhoods you walk through (Keremeikos and Psirri mostly), you will gain insights and be taken to city blocks you've never before seen. Highly recommended!
It was very exciting. And also like a city tour, highly recommended! Kaliopi knows the Athens street art scene very well and took time to answer questions. We now see the city through different eyes.
Incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and detailed tour of not only amazing graffiti and the meaning behind it and the artists, but of Greek culture, the different areas of the city and even restaurant and bar recommendations. Highly recommend.
Katerina really went over and above today. Her knowledge was amazing and she showed us some amazing art. She paced the tour to suit us and allthough the weather conditions were not good, she gave us some unforgetable memories. Very well done!
I was not only introduced to one of the coolest areas in Athens, but I also gained a new perspective on the town! Kalliopi is a professional when it comes to street art and managed to give an interactive and evocative tour. Thank you!
Thomas was very fun and informative. Highly recommend this walking tour. Saw a few interesting neighborhoods, including some that tourists miss.
This was by far one of the most illuminating and enjoyable street art tours I’ve ever taken - and I’ve taken quite a few in cities around the world. Our guide, Thomas, was not only warm and engaging but also impressively knowledgeable about the art itself - its local, national, and global contexts, and its deep historical ties to the city’s urban life. The artworks are stunning! I wholeheartedly recommend this tour.
Wonderful, wonderful experience. Kalliopi is so knowledgeable and kind, and you learn so much: about the political and social aspects of graffiti, but also the artistic ones. Her love for the city fills the tour, and it's also a great way to get oriented. Highly recommended.
I loved the tour. Kalliopi was very nice, kind and knowledgeable. She explained everything in detail and also replied to lots of questions about both street art and Athens in general. Highly recommended.
Thomas was beyond excellent. I wish I could give 6 stars to him. His gentle guidance through the streets of Athens showing us the beauty of street art as well as his knowledge and his generosity to share much more than just about art, was beyond exceptional.
This was a fantastic way to learn about Athens - its history and social political culture. Kalliopi was both brilliant and generous.
Lovely walking tour in sections of Athens you might not usually see. Kaliopi was our guide and she’s a very knowledgeable artist and guide. It went over 3 hours, so we were a bit done by the end, but otherwise a nice time.
Great tour! I really liked finding out more about the area. Lots of interesting details and facts I wasn’t aware of before. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to find out more about the city.
Thomas was wonderful. He really showed us the ins and outs of the art tour. He also showed us some of his favorite paintings. After we were all done he sent us a document in an email of his favorite places. So he truly went above and beyond that we weren’t expecting.
We absolutely loved our street art tour in Athens! It was one of the unexpected highlights of our trip. The guide Thomas was incredibly knowledgeable, not just about the art itself, but also the social, political, and historical context behind it. We learned about local artists like INO, Sonke and saw pieces we’d never have noticed (or understood) on our own.
Kalliopi was super friendly and knowledgeable. She was able to highlight many pieces of art, educate on different styles, as well as the motivation behind the pieces. The tour wasn't rushed either despite being able to see so much. Highly recommend
Kalliopi, our lovely tour guide, led us through neighborhoods off the normal tourist path and gave a local and historical perspective on the street art we saw. Very interesting and informative!
Kalliopi was such a wonderful tour guide. She taught me so much about Athens through the street art. This was my first street art tour and this might be my new favorite way to learn about a city. After the tour, I was in a totally different neighborhood and spotted one of the artist’s pieces! Can’t recommend this one enough!
We book the tour because we like murales and at the end of the tour we realized that we did a full immersion in the Art, History and Social Events occurred in Athens in the last years. We learn a great deal about graffiti, street art and murales and the artists who painted them. I also enjoy the fact that we walk through the different neighborhoods and learn about the city. We strongly recommend this tour. We did the 3 hrs tour, and did not feel tired at all. This experience gave me a real idea of what is Athens besides the Parthenon and the touristic attraction. Thank you 🙏🏼
It was a really nice way to get to know Athens for our 2 Teenage Girls and us. You would never figure out, what wie have heard absolut the artists and their pictures. Cool Spots and a really awesome Tour Guide named Kalliopi. Thanks a Lot!
I had the most amazing experience learning about Street Art w/ Kalliopi (Street Art is illegal). She is very knowledgeable about street art and local street artists. Kalliopi does a fantastic job explaining about each area we visited, about the art & fabulous recommendations for food and drinks in the area. 10 out 10 would recommend and do this tour again. Thank you very much!!!
This was the trip of a lifetime for four “old” friends, and Greece did not disappoint! Katerina was one of our favorite tour guides! She provided a well rounded experience with an insider’s perspective of the local street artist culture. She wove together history, symbolism, Greek culture and personal insights into an engaging tapestry of vibrant and thought-provoking memories. She addressed the political and cultural significance of the art works using a reflective yet objective approach. A delightful newlywed couple from Canada joined us and we already have plans to visit each other for football games! Thank you to Katerina who anticipated and was considerate of our personal needs, whether it was standing in the shade to stay cool or pivoting to take an early bathroom break! This tour is a must-do for the curious traveler.
This was a wonderful and interesting walk through some neighborhoods to see street art. Kalliopi was incredibly knowledgeable about the street art, and was able to give us history and answer our “why’s” to several other questions not relating to the street art.
Interesting & informative tour, taking us to parts of Athens we would not have otherwise visited. Kalliopi certainly knows her stuff & tour thoroughly recommended.
Very passionate guide with highly interesting information about street art and very much other information. One of the best guides I ever had!
Kalliopi was an excelent guide, profession in street art with lots if details. Highly recommand this tour by my hearth!
We did the street art tour in the afternoon with Thomas. We had a great time. Thomas is incredibly knowledgeable about street art in Athens and the artists behind it. The tour was fascinating, super interesting and we learned a lot—not just about the art, but also about the people who created it. We really enjoyed strolling through the Gazi neighborhood and wandering the narrow streets of Psirri—it was a great way to experience the lively and vibrant side of Athens. We highly recommend this tour!
We did the tour the Thomas who has a lot of knowledge on street art in Athens and street art artists. The tour was very interesting and enriched, Thomas gave us a lot of information on the artists themselves and on their work we saw through the tour. We walked through neighborhoods and areas that we would not have walked there on our own so it was very nice. Highly recommended!
Thomas was a kind, gracious host. For me his accent was a bit challenging to understand. The art was interesting.
Thomas was a perfect guide: friendly, precise and passionate! We walked for 6km around some of the most central Athens' neighbourhood, learning a lot of things, not only about Street Art. Definitely recomended!
A insider tour. You will not be able to appreciate the street art in Athens so much, unless you have a knowledgeable your guide. I was lucky to find one. It is a 5 star experience, with a tour of world class art gallery in the street. Strongly recommended.
Kalliopi is a great tour guide with a lot of knowledge about the local artists - it's a plus that she knows some of them personally - and the stories behind the murals. There's a lot of wonderful street art in Athens and she knows all about it, and where to find it. In 3 hours you cover a lot of ground and see lots of graffiti and street art. I also learned a lot about Greek history and culture and life in Athens along the way. I really enjoyed this tour.
Brilliant tour! It was definitely the highlight of the trip, just a shame the weather wasn't warmer. Kalliope was incredibly knowledgeable about all the pieces that we saw, and we were able to explore different neighbourhoods that we'd never have ventured to if not for the tour. I won't look at graffiti in the same way again!
Knowledgeable guide. Although a regular visitor I learnt about parts of Athens that I was unfamiliar with. Even after such a brief introduction we became familiar with the styles of key artists.
