It is a long day trip from Athens but the tour was well worth the time and money. There were rest stops both coming and going which helped break up the 5 + hour bus ride. The itinerary was well planned and our knowledgeable and personally engaging tour guide Maria provided detailed anecdotes about the history of the monasteries and the monastic lifestyle. We visited four monasteries and a vantage point which was more than enough considering the length of the trip. Meteora is a place I would wholeheartedly recommend and Meteora Thrones has it planned out well.

Good 😊 organised by the driver and the tour crew with the yummy 🤤 lunch and the explanation of the Monasteries
The tour was very well organized. It was easy to find the bus and the driver and tour guide were very knowledgeable and reliable. This is a great day tour to do from Athens and very good value. I am happy with the one day tour where you see 3 monasteries. You see all of them from the outside as well as the amazing view. Inside the monasteries are nice, but to be honest the three we say (Megalo Meteoro, Agios Varlaam, and Agios Stephanos) were fairly similar so I don’t think you need to see more to appreciate it.
Hi, Pros: the tour guide lady was very friendly, helpful, and the place is breathtaking Cons: on the way there the police stopped us for some reason, the driver didnt tell us even a word for why we stopped and held up for 20mins. May be thats why we didnt stop at the first stop. The lunch was terrible, we couldnt eat it, rather we purchased something else. And the Wifi didnt work either way on the bus, but that was nothing almost.
The guide was very kind and taught as a lot of things about this site and both the driver and the guide were friendly and took us a lot of beutiful pictures on the famous view points where we stopped.
I was nervous at the beginning when we got to the buses, as it was very chaotic and disorganized. After we found which bus we were on, the rest of the day was practically a 5-star review. The buses were really nice and air-conditioned. If you want to charge your phone at all, bring a USB phone adapter as that is what the outlets on the bus were, or just bring your own portable charger. Definitely bring some kind of charging mechanism as it was a very long and full day. Our tour guide was very sweet. I can’t remember her name, but she was very helpful and always willing to answer our miscellaneous questions that we had. The bus ride to the monasteries took about 4.5-5 hours since we took a break stop about 2 hours in, and then another stop for lunch before heading into the monasteries. I did not pay for an included lunch voucher, and I was okay without it. I would definitely pack some snacks and/or part of a meal if that is something you’d like to have during the day. The lunch was more of a food court/school lunch type of system. You can always decide to pay for a lunch when you get there though — it was €15 for a salad, food plate, and water. We got to go inside 3 of the 6 monasteries. I thought all 3 of the ones we went inside of were very interesting and a great sight to see. They really did not miss anything in Meteora on this trip! To go inside the monasteries, you have to pay €5, so I would make sure to bring some Euros with you. There was a lot of “hop on, hop off” moments with the bus, and I really enjoyed that there was not an extensive amount of walking. We spent about 5 hours up at the monasteries, and I felt like it was the perfect amount of time. On a ride back, we stopped by the same place we went to right before the monasteries before we headed home. There was not a food service per say, but you could buy snacks/drinks and use the restroom before heading back. We stopped again after 2 hours at the same place we were at for the first stop, and they had some dinner options. I am not sure how much it cost, but you were also able to get snacks/drinks there as well as the restroom. Overall, it was a VERY long and busy day, but I would say the money spent was very well worth it. I would definitely recommend to others!
Wonderful tour!! These breathtaking monasteries were truly amazing! Our guide, Clement, was so knowledgeable and passionate.
The trip with Meteora Thrones was a very good choice. The tour was well managed and gave me a very good overview and valuable information about place. The communication with the travel agency staff was also very good, fast and helpful. Price for tour was also affordable. Everybody who is able to sit for several hours in bus and able to climb a few dozen steps up and down can complete this route. I wanted to visit the Meteora monasteries for a long time. And I was not disappointed. That place is magical, the monasteries, the surroundings with their strangely shaped rock formations, simply everything. Even the view of small town sitting beneath the towering rocks is very nice. I booked the tour with the lunch option, which turned out to be a good decision. There was a selection of several meals, and even though the restaurant was quite crowded at the time, everything was handled quickly. Then the exploration of the area began. We visited three monasteries (Agios Nikolaos, Varlaam, Saint Stefanos) and made several stops at breathtaking viewpoints overlooking the monasteries and the Meteora region. Our guide provided us with a good portion of information about each monastery. Since he has been living in Kalambaka for a long time, his knowledge was extensive. The monasteries attract large numbers of tourists, so it’s necessary to be prepared for a several minutes’ wait at the entrance, but it was manageable. We had enough time to explore each monastery. However, for a deeper experience, I would recommend staying there for at least one additional night. I stayed for two nights. 🙂
We travelled from Athens on 29th March 2026 to Meteora and our guide from Kalabaka was Clement from Canada and we would like to commend him for his excellent professional job throughout our trip. He was leading the group, providing his information about Meteora and he explained passionately about the history and significance of Meteora. His time keeping was excellent and he was empathic to everyone in our group. We highly recommend him and wish him all the best going forward. Meteora Thrones have proved to be very professional travel and sightseeing provider and we will definitely use them again.
1 day Meteora Tour from Athens with Local Guide A wonderful trip to an amazing landscape with Clement from Toronto/Kalambaka who not only gave us historical accounts, but also dramatized his talks in a very intriguing way. His passion for the place was inspiring. Clement and driver Vassilis kept spirits high throughout the day.
It’s a very long day but so worthwhile. The bus trip is very comfortable so you can arrive relaxed. Our guide was Clement and he was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the area and the monasteries. The area and the monasteries far exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend
The Meteora mountains were very impressive. Unfortunately, there was also a negative experience. Misleading information about the time spent on the road. It is not 4 hours, but 6.5 hours one way and the same back. The booklet says that we will be in the mountains at 12.30, but we reached the lunch spot at 14.30. Therefore, we were only in 2 monasteries, which we had to walk around in running mode. We could not fully surrender to the beauty that was there. The last stops were already in complete darkness. I understand that the roads were blocked, but they should have announced it in advance. We arrived back in Athens at 12.00 at night. It was very tiring. And yes - there was no WiFi on the bus. The driver said that it was simply blocked. We are a little disappointed..
Highly recommend this tour we felt well taken care of, and the guide was very knowledgeable. Visiting Meteora is a must, well worth the long trip.
It was an amazing experience! The journey was very comfortable, with restroom and food breaks. Our guide, Aphrodite, was perfect: knowledgeable, interesting, friendly, and lovely. Meteora is a magical place you absolutely must see at least once in your life.
It's just amazing trip, Meteora it's so Beautiful place and so unique.... We were so happy to see it!!!!! We also had luck to have as a guide a very nice young lady called Aphrodite, And she explained us a lot of things and she was so friendly and helpful!!!!, Hopefully we will make this trip once more sometime!!!
Giannis, our tour guide, made the trip very enjoyable. He was very approachable and he also offered himself to take pictures of everyone when needed. We learnt a lot about the history of monasteries of Meteora and their customs. The trip itself, although long, was very comfortable and our driver, Vassilis, couldn’t be better. We definately recommend this tour. Thank you so much!
Fantastic local guide. Helpfull and flexible employees. So happy we did this. What an amazing experience. This is something we never will forget
Hi,this trp was an wonderful experience! Maria, our guide has an incredible energy and a big smile! All it was AMAZING- people, food, monasteries!
I had an unforgettable experience visiting Meteora, and our guide Clement made it even more special. He was incredibly kind, engaging, and spoke in such an interesting way that every moment of the tour was captivating. Honestly, he is one of the best guides I have ever met in my life. The trip was perfectly organized, and Meteora itself is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. This excursion is absolutely worth taking, and I especially recommend booking it with this company – and with Clement in particular!
We had a great day! Aphrodite said she is a new guide so she must be a natural. The bus was clean and Christos watched out for us. I normally drive everywhere myself but I'm really glad that we took the tour instead.
Absolutely amazing trip. Our tour guide Maria was amazing. Her knowledge of the area was fantastic. She really made the trip enjoyable. My 14 year old son said “the Meteora trip was the best thing he did in Greece”. He loved it
All was great. Exact timing, driving smoothly, the guide Maria is superb 👍 Meteora is magical place and must be visited.
Overall a nice trip. It is a long journey from Athens. You only get 1 hour at each monastery so it feels quite rushed and really isn't enough time to fully see the venues; however, it's how you get multiple stops in. The bus transport was nice, but the air conditioning didn't work very well. The stops were organized well to help split the trip and provide bathroom and food breaks. The smaller transport up to the monastaries was very nice and personalized. Overall, a good trip if you want to see something unique. For families with smaller children - I don't know that we recommend it. Our kids did OK (ages 7, 8, 9 and 11), but it is a very long day of driving and lots of steps, so it might not be worth it, depending on your kids' ages and how well they handle road trips. In general, if you want to see the monistaries in their full splendor, then I would recommend going the night before and staying so you can have more time. If you are Ok with hitting the highlights, then this is a great option!
Excellent private tour with Christo. So nice to have an air conditioned van to ride to each of the monasteries. He knew the best locations for photo opportunities and he was extremely knowledgeable about the area and answered all of our questions. We highly recommend this tour.
The trip to Meteora was exceptionally smooth, with timely departures and returns. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and added great depth to the experience. The tour was absolutely worth the price, and I would definitely recommend this travel agency for a well-organized and unforgettable jour
The tour guide was very professional and really good at storytelling. Very interesting tour with important insights and unbelievable views. I want to say big thanks to the guide and drivers, who ride so that you don't notice the time spent on the road.
We had a great tour of Meteora recently. The place is surreal. Our guide clement and driver Nico they put lot of effort to make the trip fun and engaging. We covered lot of good photo stops which we would have missed otherwise. If you are looking for a day trip from athens. This should be the tour to book.
We enjoyed the trip and all the arrangements. The lunch worth to eat. Views is stunning. We visited three monasteries,I love the second one, the buildings is so beautiful.
Really worth it for the price if you’re in Athens for a couple days and are looking for an unique experience. Its lot of road and you’ll wish you could spend more time there but it’s a really good option if you’re on a tighter schedule. Our guide clement did an annexing job at squizing informations between the stop and its just an amazing place to visit even for a couple of hours.
Only issue was transportation - the train no longer runs, so they scheduled a bus. It was old and hot. The meal stop was not great. However, once we connected with our small group tour, it was fabulous. Great guide, beautiful sites, and great history. Lots of stairs, stairs and more stairs but so worth it.
We took the bus from the Athens train station, Larissa station, to Kalambaka where we dispersed to a smaller busses and picked up our guides. The ride to Kalambaka and back was about four hours each way with a break in between. When in the smaller bus we made various stops with the guide explaining in perfect English the history of what we were looking at. We physically entered in three of the monasteries and viewed form near and far the rest. Entrance to each monastery is three Euros and it's worth it. Use cash. The views and the history behind the whole area is nothing short of outstanding. What made our trip even better was the depth of knowledge of our young guide Maria. She was Awesome 👌 The driver of the mini bus was polite and courteous. The drivers (2) to and from Athens were ok with a minor discrepancy of having the music little too loud. Recommendation if you cand take the heat take the tour on a cooler months. Second take the two day tour and there's too much to see and process for one day and there's some hiking involved. Overall the our was well spent money.
Had a wonderful tour of meteora and our tour guide, Cristos, was awesome. He was so knowledgeable with Meteora's history and knew all the great spot to stop for the best panoramic views. Anyone planning a tour Meteora tour, ask for Cristos, you will have a blast with him. thank you Cristos for the great tour.
Excellent well organized . Maria guide was very knowledgeable explained many things to us. Well. Stop for food was good, food was enough and tasty very enjoyable trip. Started on time and returned on time.
Very well organised tour. We were tra sported from Athens by a nice bus instead of a train , had a stopover where we had lunch and then collected by our lovely & passionate tour guide Clement who was very knowledgeable and made sure we all had the best views, the best photos and the best time. Although it was a long trip from Athens, the experience really made up for the long journey . We also had a great driver Dimitri who made sure we did not miss any cave, any great view. Highly recommended!
The views were amazing and our tour guide was very insightful! Maria was her name and she was very knowledgeable about everything! We ended up not taking a train due to it being closed, but they arranged a bus for us and let us know in advance. Everything was wonderful and Maria was absolutely amazing!!
Good scenery, good guide, good time management. The day was unforgettable for us. Just missed train ride because of the flood...
Out extremely knowledgeable tour guide Chris gave us the experience of a lifetime. My husband and i traveled with Chris in his comfortable car to monasteries, sunset rock, the village around Kalambaka, the new and old city church while describing rock formations as well as the building of the the monasteries.. My husband wore a therapeutic boot and Chris was supportive and kind for our slower pace. He made certain we saw everything and took our pictures along the way the save the memory.
Since there were no trains from Athens to Kalambaka, the office offered to take us by bus from Athens. Although there was a bit of confusion about which bus to take, the bottom line is that we managed to get to Meteora. The bus journey lasted almost 5 hours, during which we stopped once to rest. We were joined in Kalambaka by Clement, who was an excellent tour guide. He explained the history of the monasteries to us in very understandable English and managed our time well. We were able to visit three monasteries in the time we had and stopped several times to take photos of the stunning scenery.
Highly recommend this experience. Clement was unbelievable guide who explained everything about everything and show us some nice spot for take a photos when we had time. Thank you so so much again. It’s 10000% worth it!
Views were amazing and got chance to experience cloud as it rained in the morning. As a landscape photographer, I shot a lot. I’ve added a few below as it’s perfect location pit stops by Meteora Thrones tours agency. Guide and driver are excellent with best definition of history.
We really enjoyed the tour! We had a really fun and kind guide. He knows alot about the météora and shared alot of information ! I highly recommend !
Fantastic trip. Meteora is well worth the visit and the guide was very helpful and nice. Definitely recommend!
Had a wonderful trip, so much to see , our guide Maria was perfect , full of knowledge and very helpful . I would recommend her any day .
The view from the top of the Monastries, and from a few view points where they stop is absolutely breath-taking. The Monastries themselves are beautiful and have a charm of its own. No matter how much I describe the beaty of the place it will fall short. Even the photos and video I captured fell short to capture the scale and beauty of the place. To me, it felt like if someone comes to visit Greece to only see Meteora and go back they will not be disappointed of their trip. All this was enhanced by the Meteora thrones guide, by keeping us on time which helped to cover all the places without missing anything, and helped us return on time. As time was very short. If possible I would definetly recommend giving maybe 2 or 3 days to Meteora. The guide was a very nice storyteller, and was super friendly and courteous. I forgot his name to mention here but he mentioned to be from Canada. All in all this is a must have in your itenary if you are visiting Greece.
We squeezed in a day trip to Meteora by train from Athens and were picked up by The Meteora Thrones travel and tourism in Kalambaka. They were there waiting for us upon our arrival, the bus was very clean and comfortable. Our guide was Clemens he was simply wonderful cannot tell you how impressed we were with his services all through the tour he made it a lot more fun and informative. We managed to visit 3 monasteries and see all 6 monasteries and caves. Highly recommend this tour, booking was very easy. The driver was very patient and drove safely around the mountains and got us back to the train station on time. Great team made our trip very special.
Train to Train trip to Meteora on 20 April 2023 was a wonderful experience. Especially we liked our guide Clement who was facing the group when telling very interesting things about Meteora. Although we had only about 3 hours time to explore Meteora, we did not feel any rush and had enough time to experience beathtaking views of Meteora and to make wonderful photos. Thanks a lot, Clement! We were deeply impressed by your knowledge and the very clear English language for us as non native English speakers.
They just didn't meet what it is listed in the website. Instead of 5h the tour lasted less than 3. You don't visit 3 monasteries, but 2, and you don't even see all of them. Never went to see the Hermit caves either. The tour guide was very friendly but didn't really seem to know what he was talking about, and everything was rushed. Granted that the train was delayed by 30min, the tour would still not be close to 5h. The explanation of how the rocks were formed was completely asinine. Totally dishonest company. We wrote to them the day before to ask about the schedule since the train doesn't arrive at the time stated (12:05). They replied that the tour starts later (13:11) but didn't take the opportunity to mention any other changes to the program. Luckily we stayed an extra day, because almost 10 hours on the train in one day is not worth this joke of a tour. We asked for a refund because what is advertised is completely at odds with what is delivered.
We had an amazing tour to Meteora, visited 2 Monasteries inside too. And special thanks to our guide ‘Tim’ for sharing all of stories and history about Monasteries. We can only suggest this tour to everyone, this place must to see.
The view was amazing and Meteora it's self is outstanding and an amazing place to visit. However the tour was quite lacking. We was left to ourselves to tour the monasteries. There was very poor planning in terms of how the day was organised. In total including travel the tour was from 7:30am to 11pm they didn't supply any food or real plan a time we could eat. At the end of the tour they gave us 10 mins to eat go to the toilet before setting off to Athens. My partner is allergic to milk so we struggled to find food she could eat in this window. We was slightly over the suggested time and they reacted in a horrible way saying they was about the leave so we was lucky. When asked about where we can find food they just laughed at us and pointed us in a direction.
I'm glad I booked this tour. This can easily be tge highlight of my trip to Greece. Kalambaka is amazing. I'm supposed to use the train to go to Kalambaka, but because trains and railway lines are closed, the company arranged for a big bus to take us from Athens to Kalambaka.
