We are not an expert in political science/sociology and could not understand Isaac fully but it is always great to learn new things when we visit new places. You will at least find out the root cause of weak Greek economy is not lazy people by the end of the tour. Actually I found many people are hard working during our 12-day stay in Greece this time. I will definitely book his another tour when I visit Athens next time!
Isaac gave us a wonderful, deeply informed and interesting tour of the relatively recent social and political history of Athens (and Greece more generally). Told in the form of 3 “series”, the tour really gave context and insight into the tangled and internally complex politics of the area. He was funny, responsive to questions, and considerate. Totally recommend!
Fantastic tour. Isaac is knowledgeable, funny, and most of all, he has a natural knack for being a guide. We learned a great deal from this and enjoyed the experience. This was our first time in Greece. I don't know what other walking tours offer, but I suspect Isaac's walking tours are unique in their emphasis on understanding modern Greek society and politics. If you're looking for a walking tour of the usual tourist attractions in Athens - and to be clear, these "usual" tourist attractions, like the Acropolis etc., are amazing in their own right and absolutely live up to their fame - this probably isn't the tour for you. But if you're looking, as we did, to get a better sense of contemporary Athens, its dynamic urban vibe, and the way politics is uniquely visible and present in its streets, then this is the right tour. Great experience, great guide.
Isaac opened our minds to the Greece beyond the “tourism Disneyland”. His walking tour was informative and well planned. I have such a better insight into the past and current issues and it helped me make sense of what I was observing. Highly recommend
This is an amazing way to learn about the political climate, past and present. Isaac is so knowledgeable and pleasant- one of the best guided tours I’ve ever taken.
This was a great tour. The guide was knowledgeable and the material was interesting. I would highly recommend.
This was an EXCELLENT experience, and honestly a must if you are in Athens for 2 days or more. I always think its great to understand the history of a place we are in (after all, we visited Athens for the ancient history but this really landed a complete picture for us.) The guide is incredibly knowledgeable of history and the state of Greek politics. The info is presented in an accessible, fun, and incredibly unbiased way. I walked away feeling very informed while not sure of his political leanings - which in my opinion is perfect for this level of event. It was great to walk around parts of Athens and see the story behind the buildings, rather than just various residential + shopping areas.
Isaac was a wonderful guide - his depth and breadth of knowledge was incredible and he was able to make comparisons to our own country's politics make some of the concepts easier to understand. I would say this is a niche tour, but if you are interested in history and politics it is a great tour
Isaac was a fantastically well informed guide who imparted his knowledge easily and with enthusiasm. We learned a huge amount about the current Greek socio political scene and we’re shown a side of Athens that is a million miles from that of antiquity
Isaac exposed us to a fascinating view of social and poltical aspects of Athens that we couldn't possibly have received without him in our short visit to the city. He uses a wealth of knowledge in the field to offer a comparative perspective with issues in other areas of the world, inviting an enriching dialogue. We highly recommend his tour.
We haven’t stopped talking about this walking tour since it concluded. Focusing on the period of Hellenic history from the conclusion of the Greek War of Independence until today, this tour incorporated the cultural, political, geographical, and foreign influences which have effected the country’s evolution. We were aware of much of the history covered in this presentation, but we appreciated how our guide Isaac connected the events of the past to help us better understand how modern Greece came to be. He was informative, interesting, and entertaining. We enjoyed the mix of locations and his insight about the importance of the sights we visited was enlightening. We definitely want to learn more about what we saw and heard.
I thought I understood a bit about Greek politics before Issac walked us through it - literally. Absolutely fascinating and only something you can do on foot and in person. I urge you to do this tour. Plenty of opportunity to sit and just listen (not all walking) or engage in discission. There are bits of Athens and significant historical events you simply won't know without Issac. Five stars.
I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. Isaac was a brilliant guide, engaging and insightful, and the tour that he crafted really is like no other. I had no idea how complicated Greek politics and society are. If you'd like to go beyond the standard tours and sightseeing activities, this is a must do activity.
Isaac is a passionate and knowledgeable guide. I really enjoyed the route he took us along and his story spanning from the Greek independence war to the modern era. I appreciated that he had a lot of interesting anecdotes based on the recent news stories: they added flavor to his overarching narrative. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to understand what is the current political situation in Greece and what are the historical reasons for the way it is.
A well structured and exciting walk. Isaac is a very knowledgeable and passionate specialist. The tour included insights of all sorts (economy, culture، political history) as well as anecdotes only a very informed local knows. I totally recommend the tour.
This is one of the best experiences/ tours that I have ever done. Isaac is a wealth of knowledge on Greece’s complex political and social dynamics, both contemporary and historical, and weaves it all together in a fascinating way to really lift the lid on what makes Greece what it is today, demystifying its apparent contradictions with insightful explanations and perspectives. I really like how he tried to draw comparisons to the socio-political contexts other countries that the visitor may be familiar with – in my example, India and the UK – and also have dived in as deep as one wanted into specific topics. It really helped peel the onion for me and gave me a completely different perspective of the country, which I was visiting for the first time (though I can see how it could be equally eye-opening for someone who has visited before or even lives there). I also really appreciated that although I happened to be the only person booked on the particular tour (and which I could unfortunately not do much about because of my overall itinerary), Isaac was still happy to go ahead with the tour and did so with the same gusto and energy which I presume he would have with a larger group. Thank you Isaac for a great experience!
Isaac is knowledgeable and personable with a good sense of humor which made the subject matter much easier to enjoy. As someone with a Greek heritage, it’s has inspired me to dig deeper and learn more on this topic. Definitely recommend!
This is an excellent tour that provides an important and thoughtful framework of modern Greece and how it exists today. Isaac is excellent in walking (literally and figuratively) you through the world of modern Greek politics and demonstrating the various competing forces that shape it. I highly recommend this very thoughtful tour.
We took the tour with Isaac to find out a bit more about what we’ve seen in the news from Greece over the last few years. Isaac really brought this to life with humour, great story telling and really helpful ways of relating Greece to other countries. Of course people go to Athens for the Acropolis, but Isaac helped make the recent history a must see through this tour!
Great overview of Athens' political history with Isaac. He took the time to walk through historical neighbourhoods and explain everything to us patiently, from Greek independence to modern Greek politics. Would love to hear about Greek history from a Greek in future, but this was a great introduction and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from Isaac!
If you are into political and social history, then you will love this tour. Isaac was able to answer all my questions about the Greek history and modern life, like: Is modern Greece into feminism post the me- too movement? Does it care about climate change? What are the anarchists actually fighting for? What is the state of racism? The history was absolutely fascinating. I recommend it to people who are into this kind of thing.
The "Athens Social and Political Walk" hosted by Isaac is a fantastic tour. If you're interested in politics and you want to gain a deeper understanding of Greece (beyond of the standard touristic spots), I can definitely recommend Isaac's tour. He will explain to you: - the nation-building of the modern Greek state - the financial crisis in Greece since 2008 and its impact on the rise of populism and radical political groups - the history of the anarchic neighborhood "Exarcheia" and how it is jeopardize by gentrification and a very suppressive use of "Law and Order" by current Greek policy Isaac is an easy-going, interesting and very knowledgeable guide. I appreciated his sophisticated views on current Greece while also giving an international context. As mentioned above: I can absolutely recommend this tour.
The trip was well organized. Isaac is very knowledgeable in political science in general and specifically in Greek politics and social issues. We learned about Greece's recent history (did you know? All the neo-classical architecture in Athens was commissioned by a German politician), interesting fascets of local economics and even understood why the crisis with the EU was inevitable. Me and both of my friends (Canadian and Israeli) enjoyed a lot and were very much engaged throughout. We also walked through the so-called anarchist neighborhood and got a very good explanation of the intricacies in play there. I feel this tour gave me valuable social sensitivity and brought me a bit out of just sight-seeing ignorance for the rest of my stay in Athens. I would recommend this tour to any one who's likely minded.
I took this tour at the end of a two-month holiday in Greece and went home with a deeper and more accurate understanding of Greek politics. Isaac adapted the talk to make comparisons with the various countries represented on the tour. I feel like I learnt so much and am grateful to Isaac for all the work he does to illuminate the complex nature of Greece's political history and culture.
Go to the Acropolis and wander around Plaka on day one for your ancient history fix. But save day two (or three) for this tour if you want to learn about the dynamic living history of Athens happening right before your eyes (and under your feet). I had read a lot about modern Athens before my trip and it was powerful to see my book learning reflected accurately in the streets. It was very illuminating and thought provoking. Isaac is knowledgeable and entertaining (in short, "a good guy"). If you're used to the complexities and grittiness of urban centers make sure to ask for the "extra spicy" option.
Great tour. Isaac put together a great agenda and was very knowledgeable. Worth doing for sure - touches on very interesting topics you don’t hear about anywhere else.
This was very insightful and extremely interesting and unusual. Narrated and curated like a documentary. Recommend it strongly!
This tour was a perfect bookend for us! We started with the Acropolis, toured the islands, then came back to Athens and found this tour. It really helped us understand how modern Greece came to be what it is today. Super interesting for anyone interested in history and politics!
Such a great experience! My friend and I were interested in learning a little bit more about the cultural/Socio political environment during our visit to Athens. Isaac is really knowledgeable and the tour was fantastic. Our group was fun and he did not leave any question unanswered. I highly recommend
Isaac is a fantastic storyteller, and we came away from the experience with a deeper understanding of Athena history and its political and social history. I’m glad we got the opportunity to explore areas and neighborhoods that might be missed by tourists. If you travel because you love to learn, you must check this out.
Very informative and unbiased walking tour. It was refreshing to learn about the history of a city and a country from someone as knowledgeable and curious. Most walking tours in the Balkans are usually done by very nationalistic and very historically biased guides. This was an exception to this. Highly recommended when visiting Athens
Issac is knowledgeable and friendly, he told us history and everything behind Athens! The tour lasts arlund 3 hours but he always found us good spot to sit just to make sure we wont be too tired:) Also love the vibe of the tour, everyone is lovely and always asked further questions! 100% recommend this tour to everyone. **make sure you got your sunglasses with you haha - 非常推薦大家參加這個團,導遊友善親切,分享了超多雅典背後的故事,帶我們到了一般遊客不會到的區域,特別的體驗。 整團的人都很好,感覺是有趣地學習:)
Interesting addition to my trip to Athens. Our guide was super energetic about the subject matter. A good chronological run through from a quick intro to the historical influences right through to the political and social activities happening around us on the day. Plenty of time for questions and answers. Would like to do some of the other tours organised by the same guide!
Very informative and enjoyable walk which unusually gives a personal view of the contemporary city. A lot of ground was covered in three hours plus! Recommended for anyone who's is interested in Athens and Greece today. One slight criticism the walk was a long one and a break in a cafe would have been a good idea
Isaac knows his subject matter and has a perspective as a person living in Greece who is not Greek. I appreciated his description of early modern Greece tying it through the Junta and move toward democratic reform. He gave a perspective on the polarization in Greek society that I appreciated.
The walk was fantastic. Isaac is very knowledgeable, and has designed a very interesting and informative walk. Highly recommended for people interested in learning about political history and the conditions in which the current social and political developed.
Imagine a three-hour documentary where, rather than viewing it on a screen, you accompany the narrator around the city, seeing the events firsthand and having the chance to engage in discussion with a wide range of individuals. This is what you'll receive from the tour, and it's great! You will like this experience if you have an interest in politics or economics, not only in Greece but internationally. You will be amazed by Isaac's insightful explanation of the current Greek history and the tales and images he shares.
The guide has a story to tell on political development in Greece, with vivid anecdotes and examples. You don't have to agree with everything (or have much prior knowledge) to gain a insight into the politics of Greece, particularly leading to the recent crisis. For someone like myself, who has read histories of the country and has background knowledge, the guide's synthesis is very useful in setting context.
