Terrible Experience — $400 Spent, Tour Cut Short, and Zero Support From the Company This was genuinely one of the worst travel experiences I’ve had, and I was left in tears by the end of it. What made it especially disappointing wasn’t just the experience itself, but the complete lack of understanding or willingness to help from the tour company afterward. We booked this tour for our family at a cost of approximately $400 and clearly disclosed in our reservation that we would be traveling with an infant. The experience started poorly with unclear meeting instructions. We were told to meet at a train station but weren’t given a specific landmark or clear directions on where to find the group. Once we finally connected with our guide, he was friendly and welcoming, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, the weather deteriorated significantly during the tour. What started as light rain became a heavy downpour. We had our infant covered in his stroller, but he became increasingly distressed, and we desperately needed somewhere sheltered to take him out, comfort him, and attend to his needs. There was nowhere suitable to do so. Our guide kindly suggested stopping at a small souvenir stall, but it offered no practical shelter or space to care for a baby. We tried to continue with the group, hoping to reach somewhere dry, but the next stop was another 10-minute walk away, and the group was moving slowly through the rain. Ultimately, we had no reasonable choice but to abandon the tour to find somewhere safe and dry to care for our crying infant. We spent approximately $400 on an experience we barely got to participate in. The only thing we received was a small serving of fried dough balls. To be absolutely clear, we understand that the tour company cannot control the weather. We never expected them to. We also appreciated that our guide was friendly and tried to help within his capabilities. What we did expect, however, was some degree of understanding and reasonable customer service when circumstances made it impossible for us to continue with an infant whose presence had been disclosed when booking. Afterward, we contacted the company to explain what happened and requested a partial refund. We weren’t demanding a full refund or expecting the company to absorb all the consequences of bad weather. We were simply hoping they would acknowledge that we had paid a substantial amount of money for an experience we were largely unable to enjoy and work with us toward a reasonable resolution. Instead, our request was denied, with no alternative accommodation or meaningful attempt to resolve the situation. We would have been open to discussing a rescheduled tour or another reasonable solution, but no such option was offered. That response is what turned an unfortunate experience into an exceptionally disappointing one. I recognize that other travelers may have a wonderful experience with this company under different circumstances. But based on how our family was treated when things went wrong, I cannot recommend them. A good tour company isn’t defined only by how it operates when everything goes perfectly. It’s also defined by how it treats customers when things don’t go according to plan. Unfortunately, this company failed us when we needed understanding and support the most.

This was a very fun way to get to know Athens, its food, and its people. We tasted a wide variety of foods, and always had options so we all came away satisfied. Thank you!
Amazing tour! Highly recommend. Our guide Penny was fantastic and everyone loved the tour and food.
So exciting to taste flavors and dishes we have never tried before! Our host was so friendly and knowledgeable. We accidentally went to the wrong place to begin the tour and our guide reached out to check on us. He then directed us to find where the next stop on the tour was so we could catch up with the group. The tour visited many neighborhoods so we actually got much better acquainted with the area, too. We especially appreciated that our tour included family run restaurants with many generations all working together.
This review is to recognize the great experience with Ilias as our guide on our tour. He managed a family with 2 kids under 8 on a 3.5 hr walking tour thru its ups and downs providing a great family memory. Would recommend this company and specifically this guide. Great tour, delicious food and appreciated personalized attention. Ilias, thank you and kids want you to know that after we left the cat count rose to 31!
My family and I enjoyed our food tour with Maria very much! She was great with the kids. It was a fun way to walk through Athens, exploring the food, street art and culture. We definitely got a taste of the city!
This experience was worth every penny! Our tour guide Lef was knowledgeable and personable and engaged really well with the kids (ages 9 and 7). It was a great way to see the city and experience the food. Great balance of walking and stops.
It was a wonderful experience, Lefteris is great, he knows pretty well how to make you feel comfortable and in family. All the places that we visited were great and the food was delicious. Thank you very much for the experience.
Filippos was excellent and so great with our kids! He took us to parts of the city we hadn’t seen yet and gave great history. We loved the food and it was very kid friendly. He even gave us recommendations for the rest of our stay in Athens. Great tour!
We had a fantastic experience on the Food on Foot Athens food tour with Penny. From start to finish, she made us feel welcome and showed us parts of Athens that we would never have discovered on our own. Her local knowledge was incredible, and she brought the city to life with stories, history, and insights along the way. One of the highlights was trying so many delicious foods that we simply would not have known to order ourselves. Every stop felt authentic and carefully chosen, giving us a real taste of Athens beyond the usual tourist spots. We were travelling as a family with children, and it was wonderful to find a tour that was genuinely child-friendly. Penny was incredibly patient, engaging, and accommodating with the children throughout, making sure they felt included and interested at every stop. We are pescatarians, and Penny was excellent at checking that we were comfortable with the itinerary, including visiting the meat market. She made thoughtful adjustments where needed and ensured we could fully enjoy the experience while respecting our dietary preferences. If you’re visiting Athens and want to explore the city through its food, culture, and hidden corners, we highly recommend this tour. Penny was a fantastic guide, and it was one of the highlights of our trip.
Amazing tour, and the most wonderful guide! Maria was knowledgeable, kind, and very patient with our two kids! We also had a gluten free person with us, and Maria went out of her way to be accommodating. We learned so much about Athens and ate so much delicious food — seriously, come with an appetite!
We took our family of four on this 3.5 hour morning food tour and tried pie, cheese, ice cream, and traditional Greek cuisine across several neighborhoods. It was supposed to be a group tour but we got a private, intimate experience without any other tourists. Though we can certainly tried any of the local shops on our own, our guide Lef was engaging and knowledgeable, keeping great pacing so we could enjoy each dish. It was well worth the price. My kids stayed engaged throughout. Perfect way to experience authentic Greek food and culture as a family. Highly recommend!
Moriah was an excellent guide! Our family and another family walked together and enjoyed her knowledge of both the sites, art, and the food. The kids engaged and got to try a little bit of everything.
Brilliant food tour. Maria is a warm and knowledgeable guide who is fantastic with children. We ate delicious food and learned more about Athens and its history. 10/10.
I am so disappointed... I booked this tour days in advance for 1, the morning of the tour, I was contacted by the tour operator that I, as a single traveler could not go, because it was for family and kids, which is why I booked in the 1st place because as a solo traveler I want to be safe and I figured with a group of families it we be okay. Not sure why I was able to book for 1 person if that wasn't an option.
We had a wonderful time with our guide, Penny. She was very helpful, informative and great with our kids. We found some great places to eat and even went back later in our own!
Maria was an outstanding food tour guide! I highly recommend this tour. You will get an authentic feel for the people, culture and markets. The tour starts with sweet pastries and ends with a sumptuous lunch. As we walked about, Maria taught us Greek culture and history. This was an excellent tour for the price. Us two adults and two children had a blast.
My family and I loved every minute of our Athens Food on Foot experience! Our guide Elias was kind, patient, and made the tour fun for everyone even my kids enjoyed tasting everything. We’ll definitely recommend this tour to friends visiting Athens!
Lef was a wonderful tour guide for our young family (children 11, 7 & 4)! The whole tour was set out well, with Lef taking us to some wonderful places (both sights and places to eat). The food was amazing and we couldn’t fit another thing in by the end. Such an excellent tour! We would highly recommend this for anyone visiting Athens!!!
Amazing tour and soo a lovely guide!! Really recommended to explore Athen city center and local food! Also great with children!!
We had a fantastic experience with Filippos. We are 2 adults and kids aged 16/12/10. The tour was great for the kids and was a mix of food and history, visiting places we’d never have found on our own. There was so much food! The tour ends with a meal at a family run restaurant. We had to take the leftovers home! Thank you Filippos for being such a great and engaging tour guide.
Our food tour in Athens was an absolute amazing with Ioanna! From the moment we met her, we felt completely at ease—she has such a kind, friendly, and funny personality that made the entire experience feel like we were exploring the city with an old friend. Ioanna’s knowledge of Greek cuisine, culture, and local history was truly impressive. What made the tour even more special was how comfortable and relaxed Jhoana made us feel throughout. She was attentive, engaging, and clearly passionate about what she does. We wholeheartedly recommend Jhoana to anyone visiting Athens. If you’re looking for a fun, flavorful, and insightful experience, she’s the perfect guide!
Lovely experience with amazing guide highly recommended. We went with family and had a lovely day learnt alot. The weather was bearable for a summer day in Europe
We had an incredible experience on our food tour with Philipaous. He was especially wonderful with our kids (ages 15, 12, and 9), encouraging them to try and even rate foods we never imagined they would eat. The tour took us through a wide variety of neighborhoods in Athens that we never would have discovered on our own. Along the way, Philipaous shared fascinating historical insights about each area, which made the experience even more enriching. He was also incredibly accommodating with every allergy, including sesame and pistachio, which are very difficult allergies to travel Greece with. And the food… wow! We are absolutely stuffed. Every stop was generous, delicious, and thoughtfully chosen. Highly recommend this tour and especially Philipaous to anyone visiting Athens, especially families.
Joana was lovely and provided a unique insider’s experience for me and my 5 year old daughter. Joana was knowledgeable, kind and funny. We got to see parts of Athena we would simply never have found on our own. We tasted a delicious variety of foods. Joana was thoughtful about my daughter’s needs. We had a great time together. Highly recommend - ask for Joana!
What an awesome way to see Athens! We went on a family food tour with Kate and absolutely loved it! By the time we finished my daughter was holding Kate’s hand like they were old pals and no one could eat anything more - stuffed full of so much incredible food. We loved it-and all the cats!
We took a fantastic food tour with Maria last week. The tour lasted about 4 hours and we loved each stop. In addition to the delicious food, we got to see some amazing views of the city and learned a lot about the history of Athens. Maria was great with our children (ages 4/7), who both loved the tour. This tour was one of the highlights of our trip to Athens and I would highly recommend it for families who are visiting the city!
The food tour was amazing, I believe it was Menelaos who was our guide in the morning. She was very polite and made the tour very engaging. With plenty of tasty food and beautiful views to take in along the way. She really bought a different perspective to the city and to the food culture. She was very good with our two children (9 and 10) and really kept them engaged throughout. After this experence I would, without a doubt, recommend this tour for familes with chidren.
Kate was wonderful. Great knowledge of the area and food. Lots of food! We took the tour on our first day in Athens to get a sense of the city (at least the area we were staying in ), which certainly made us feel confident about walking around Athens. The age group was good, and Kate was wonderful, interacting with all of the kids and adults.
Kate was fabulous! This was not just a food tour, but a city tour! We saw parts of Athens that we would not have visited. We highly recommend this tour!
We absolutely loved this food tour and it was a highlight of our stay in Athens. Our host Maria was absolutely brilliant, she was kind, competent and a lot of fun. She took us to some authentic places to try the most beautiful Greek foods. She explained to us so much about the history, culture and the food and it was a great sightseeing trip to see the different inner city suburbs. Our 4 year old loved the tour and she tailored everything to meet his moods and hunger levels. I would highly recommend this tour as a must do tour in Athens. I would also recommend not to have any breakfast beforehand if you’re doing the morning tour. We still had food left over for the day after. Thank you again for a great tour
This tour was wonderful. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and fun. We learned so much and experienced Athens in a way that we never would have without the tour. It was beyond our expectations. The food was wonderful!
Kate was such a wonderful, kind, thoughtful guide - like walking with a friend showing our family around her city. We booked a private family morning tour to beat the heat as much as we could - she was very patient and understanding of touring with a child under 5 years old. I highly recommend booking a private a tour if you’re able to for a young family. Someone like Kate permits the space to go at your pace, is engaging with your child, and information is still wonderful to learn from throughout the walking journey. We would book with Kate when we return. Hopefully maybe even see her on an adventure somewhere even!
It was really informative and fun. Morning tour was great to avoid the heat. Make sure you come hungry, there are so much food you won't be able to finish. My suggestion is that you save the koulouri (sesame bread ring) for later, as the big meal at the tavern is very close. Our guide Maria was fantastic, very knowledgeable and great with kids. Gave us many trousers hints and tricks. Also the walk around the "island" neighborhood was fantastic, just beware that there are many steps involved.
Fun walking tour of Athens, beware there are many steps. You do have a sit down meal so I would recommend not eating too much early on. We had a really nice time and would recommend this tour.
Great way to see more of Athens, different things and chance to chat with a local. So much yummy food! Meat and fish market a bit underwhelming but understand with time of year, local vacations and we did the afternoon tour.
There was so much food it did us for lunch and dinner (and we'd only had a pastry for breakfast). Katrina was really engaging and managed to keep both kids engaged the whole time (despite the kids struggling to sleep the night before). We also included some history /culture information on Greece/Athens. We all loved it. I'd highly recommend it
Katrina was an excellent guide and kept the kids (and our) attention over more than 3 hours even after we had done the acropolis tour in the morning. We could all barely move after eating so much. The tour also includes taking us around and explaining greek culture.
This tour ended up being way more than we ever could have asked for. Costas gave us an intimate tour of the city like a true Athenian. A perfect balance of culture and food (we were STUFFED!) we saw corners of the city we never knew existed. The food (and the people serving it) were authentic and were a great representation of this beautiful city.
We are a family of four (2 adults and 2 children- ages 6 & 9) and we booked the Athens Food on Foot “Athens Family Food Tour” based on the enthusiastic recommendation of our neighbors. It was 249 euros total for all of us. I found the price a bit high, especially for the children, but was willing to give it a chance since it came recommended by a family with 3 children (preschool, elementary, middle). Our guide Kostas was friendly, prompt, and organized. I love to cook and eat so I asked Kostas a lot of questions and he graciously answered them. We followed the emailed directions from Athens Food on Foot and skipped lunch, arriving very hungry for the 1:45 PM tour (this tour lasts 3 hours- we ran over 3 hours- perhaps because of an extra nut stop or because we walked slowly?) Our first stop was Fresko for a little cup of Greek sheep milk yogurt with honey and walnuts which was delicious. I would have loved to learn more about the history of Greek yogurt. Unfortunately, there was about 1 hour of walking until the next stopm (at 3:00 PM) which is a sesame seed circle bread called koulouri. We walked through the neighborhood Anafiotika. My husband and I thought maybe we would eat some dolmas in a little house up there- we weren’t quite sure why the tour went up there- but no. Of course, it is a beautiful area with an amazing view and Kostas kindly took our photo. I was under the impression we would stop for a small bite to eat about every 20 minutes. I didn’t realize we would walk for a whole hour without a stop, and then eat a proper meal at the end of the tour. That’s fine- I simply would have planned the morning differently had I known. So, I would absolutely not start the tour hungry if you have children under age 12. I would eat a light lunch beforehand- some salad, some fruit, a small cup of soup…something. I enjoyed stopping for the bougatsa. That was very tasty- a phyllo dough with savory or sweet fillings- we chose one with ground beef and carmelized onion, and another with sweet custard. I would go back to that cafe to try other flavors (chicken, leek, spinach). I also enjoyed stopping at the local cheese shop. We tried 5 different types of cheeses and this was fascinating- the cheeses were all various percentages and combinations of sheep, goat, cow milk. Other westerners in the shop asked Kostas to help them translate or buy cheese, which was fine, but it did add a bit of extra time to our tour. We walked through the meat and fish market, and I didn’t care for this as the ground was a bit wet and dirty. We liked learning about the squid though. I asked to buy some Greek pistachios, so we took a detour to a nut shop- and we tried some nuts and Greek liqueur called mastiha. I was glad to try everything and the shopkeeper was patient. The prices were of course better here than in Plaka. Finally, we arrived to the meze restaurant for our late lunch. Kostas ordered for us, which was great. We tried octopus, fried calamari, cold orzo with tomato and olives (I’d like to make this at home) , zucchini fritters (fluffy and light - very tasty!), fresh potatoes (chips/fries), chicken breast chunks, fava (chickpeas mixed with mashed potatoes which was surprising to learn), local sausage, saganaki (the fried salty cheese) with our choice of beverage- wine, beer, juice, etc. We were full by the end and it was a great way to end the tour. Actually, this wasn’t the end (it was for me b/c I was too full for dessert). Kostas took us to an ice cream roll shop- not Greek, but a sweet that the kids enjoyed. I wish we had a chance to try Greek coffee. I also would have liked to try more little dishes throughout the tour, instead of loading them all up at the end. This tour seemed like a normal, solid food tour- not necessarily one aimed at children- which is fine. I’m glad we had the chance to take a Greek food tour and look forward to eating and cooking more Greek food. Thank you Kostas!
Highly recommend this tour to get exposed to all the great food in Athens! Our guide was very knowledgeable and great with the kids. My daughter has a nut allergy and he made sure everything was safe and she had plenty of food to try.
Be careful they take your money , cancel not turn up and will not refund money. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!
It was a wonderful tour! Our guide, Evangelina was simply amazing. She was was very personable and fantastic with our kids. The food was superb and so much of it! Come starving as there is a lot of delicious food to eat. We enjoyed the experience immensely and three months later, we still are talking about this tour when we are reminiscing on our lovely time in Athens!
We had a great morning with our guide Evangelia! She is kind and funny and lives right in the city center where she tours. The food was amazing. Don’t eat anything before you go. You will need much room in your stomach :)
This was the best food tour I’ve been on as an adult — added benefit, the children loved it too! Our guide Eva was outstanding and made us feel right at home. She introduced us to wonderful tastes of Greece as well as different neighborhoods and scenes along the way. I absolutely recommend this tour for all. It will be a highlight of your Athens visit. Enjoy!
This was the best way to see the city and try authentic Greek food!! Our tour with Anna was a dream. She got our jet lagged 10 and 13 year olds laughing and by the end of the tour she felt like family. Would 1000% recommend.
Super accommodating, we were able to easily reschedule when out flight was delayed. The perfect way to start our first visit to Greece.
Eva was beyond wonderful. From the start she was warm, funny, knowledgeable, and easy to connect with. Her energy and enthusiasm was infectious. The parents really appreciated how much she connected with the kids and got them to participate and be curious. You have a remarkable guide on your staff. I will recommend her to everyone I know coming to Athens.
This was the most amazing tour! Eva and Niki were the best tour guides! We couldn’t have asked for better. We were traveling as a family with 6 adults and 4 children under the age of 6. The kids fell in love with Eva. She is so good with children. The food is amazing! By the end of the tour we had eaten so much food we were completely stuffed. Walking thru the beautiful streets we were able to see some amazing sights. Both guides were very knowledgeable in the Greek culture and history and were very easy to talk too. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Athens. You don’t want to miss out on this experience!
We greatly enjoyed our time on this tour. Anna was a great guide and friend in the city. She took us to a variety of different places which made eating during the remainder of our trip way more enjoyable. If we go back to Athens, I would definitely do this tour again. The only thing I would recommend is to book the tour during a cooler part of the day. The only time we could take the tour was during the early afternoon which was a bit much for the kids. However, the tour company did call us in advance and recommend we consider a morning tour beforehand.
