Itinerary
The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, arguably making the peninsula an island. The canal was dug through the isthmus at sea level and has no locks. It is 6.4 kilometres (4 mi) in length and only 21.4 metres (70 ft) wide at its base, making it impassable for many modern ships. From high up, you can enjoy the best view of Corinth's isthmus and admire the steep limestone walls while you observe the vessels below you navigate their way through the canal.
Olympia was a sacred place that attracted worshipers from around the ancient world. Starting from the 8th century BC, the religious celebrations at Olympia became associated with the Sacred Olympic Truce, honored throughout the Greek world following an agreement between the Spartan Lykourgos and the King of Elis, Iphitos. In the 5th century BC, Olympia became a place where ideas were spread, with dozens of thinkers and influential individuals coming here to exchange and pass on their knowledge and ideas.
The archaeological site held over 70 significant buildings, and ruins of many of these survive. Of special interest to Greeks of all times is the Pelopion, the tomb of the quasi-mythical king, ancestor of the Atreids, the two kings who led their domains to war against Troy. The Peloponnesus is named for Pelops. The tomb suggests that he may not have been entirely mythical.
The Temple of Zeus at Olympia was an ancient Greek temple in Olympia, Greece, dedicated to the god Zeus. The temple, built in the second quarter of the fifth century BC, was the very model of the fully developed classical Greek temple of the Doric order.
The stadium at the archaeological site of Olympia, Greece, is located to the east of the sanctuary of Zeus. It was the location of many of the sporting events at the Ancient Olympic Games.
The Temple of Hera, or Heraion, is an ancient Archaic Greek temple that was dedicated to Hera, queen of the Greek gods. It was the oldest temple at Olympia and one of the most venerable in all Greece. It was originally a joint temple of Hera and Zeus, chief of the gods, until a separate temple was built for him. It is at the altar of this temple, which is oriented east-west, that the Olympic flame is lit and carried to all parts of the world. The torch of the Olympic flame is lit in its ruins to this day. The temple was built in approximately 590 BC, but was destroyed by an earthquake in the early 4th century CE.
Nymphaeum, “home of the Nymphs” or water goddesses was the official name of a water-distribution structure constructed in the mid-2nd century at that site to provide water to the masses who attended the Olympic Games in July and August. Nymphaeum was the general name throughout the Mediterranean for an ornate structure that terminated an aqueduct bringing water from distant elevated terrain, say a stream or copious springs. This one had substructures, statues, and ornately patterned stonework; its main purpose, however, was functional. It received water from the aqueduct into a cistern and released it by stages into a system of open and closed channels leading around the site. The end partaker of the water carried a secular patera, or small drinking bowl, around with him, dipping into an open trough for the water, as is suggested by the fact that at least some of the statues carried such paterae in one hand. Troughs went everywhere through the site to accommodate the crowds.
The palaestra is the ground or grounds in ancient Olympia where “pali” (“wrestling”) was taught and performed for training purposes, i.e. “wrestling-school”. Two other martial arts were taught there: Greek πυγμή (pygme), Latin pugnus, "fist, boxing," and Greek παγκράτιον, Latin pancration or pancratium, "any method," which was free-style, or hand-to-hand, including grappling, kicking, punching, or any unarmed method whatever, no holds barred. The latter was sometimes deadly, or disfiguring (with permission), which indicates that the arts were ephebic, or "soldier" training for prospective citizens of the city-state sponsoring the school, such as Elis, but here combined with prospective candidacy for contention in the games. Be that as it may, none of the games were conducted without rules, umpires, and judges, who did not hesitate to stop contests, fine contenders within some cases amounts prohibiting future participation, or bar flagrant violators.
The Philippeion in the Altis of Olympia was an Ionic circular memorial in limestone and marble, a tholos, which contained chryselephantine (ivory and gold) statues of Philip's family: himself, Alexander the Great, Olympias, Amyntas III and Eurydice I. It was made by the Athenian sculptor Leochares in celebration of Philip's victory at the battle of Chaeronea (338 BC). It was the only structure inside the Altis dedicated to a human. The temple consisted of an outer colonnade of Ionic order with 18 columns. Inside it had nine engaged columns of the lavishly designed Corinthian order. It had a diameter of 15 meters. The naos contained two windows, much like Hera II at Paestum. It had a carved marble roof which was decorated with a bronze poppy head on top.
The Archaeological Museum of Olympia is one of the principal museums of Greece, located in Olympia. It is overseen by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and, as of 2009, is directed by Georgia Chatzi. When the original building was completed and opened in 1882, it was the first museum in Greece outside of Athens. The museum houses discoveries from the surrounding area, including the site of the Ancient Olympic Games. The collection includes objects produced and used in the area from prehistory to its time under Roman rule. The principal pieces in the museum are Hermes and the Infant Dionysus (attributed to Praxiteles), some objects from the Temple of Zeus, the Nike of Paionios, as well as an oenochoe that belonged to Phidias. The extent of its bronze collection makes it one of the most important in the world.
The ancient Olympic Games were a series of athletic competitions among representatives of city-states and one of the Panhellenic Games of Ancient Greece. They were held in honor of Zeus, and the Greeks gave them a mythological origin. The first Olympic Games are traditionally dated to 776 BC. The games were held every four years, or Olympiad, which became a unit of time in historical chronologies. They continued to be celebrated when Greece came under Roman rule, 2nd century BC. Their last recorded celebration was in AD 393, under the emperor Theodosius I, but archeological evidence indicates that some games were still held after this date. The games likely came to an end under Theodosius II, possibly in connection with a fire that burned down the temple of the Olympian Zeus during his reign.

Ancient Olympia was amazing. And, the museum was beyond belief (HIGHLY RECOMMEND). The tour guide mostly read information about what we should expect to see from his phone. He was talkative on the drive from Athens to Ancient Olympia but barely said two words on the way back. Had the tour guide not had his phone to read from, I highly doubt he would have had much to any knowledge of the site we were headed to see.
Mike was a great guide!!!! Went out of his way to share lots of great places in Athens, both to visit and restaurants. Wish we would have met Mike our first day in Athens. Trip to Ancient Olympia was so worth the drive. Incredible history. Awe inspiring. If I could give Mike a 20 out of 10 I would!
Excellent driver, great communication, friendly and polite. Very safe driver. Gave good local advice and tips. Ancient Olympia was fantastic. Stop to take picture of Corinth Canal as well.
Great driver and the free meal location was also excellent.
Our guide was Panos, who we had had on a previous tour. We liked him so much that we requested him for a second tour! It's a 3 1/2 hour drive from Athens to Olympia, so it was really nice that the car we rode in had wi-Fi. And Panos is great - he pointed out sights along the drive, adding historical background and relevant facts to enhance our understanding. When we arrived at Olympia, he drove us to the bottom of the hill to purchase tickets, then drove is back to the top of the hill where the entrance was for the Archaeological Museum. Once we were done, he drove us back down the hill to the entrance area for the actual archaeological site and the Museum of the History of the Olympic Games. Once done seeing that area he came and picked us up where he had dropped us off. The driving us up and down the hill was really appreciated as I use a walker, it's a steep climb, and it was a very warm day. Also, normally I don't think vehicles are allowed to go beyond the upper area. It looked like everyone else was walking between the upper and lower areas.
Alex was a wonderful guide. He was very knowledgeable and also made the car ride fun.
it was a nice trip . Learned the cultures and saw beautiful scenery
Olympia was amazing. It’s a far drive from Athens, but we felt it was worth it. There are three museums to see in the town and we misunderstood and thought we were doing one after lunch but we left for Athens after lunch. So we missed the Olympic museum that isn’t near the other ones. Our lunch was delicious. Beautiful day all the way around.
An excellent day tour with Nick as our guide. He is very knowledgeable and professional, and we enjoyed our conversation with him during the journey. The visit to the ancient archaeological site and fascinating museum exceeded our expectations. It’s well worth the trip from Athens!
I loved the ride to Olympia it was a very fun ride and we were accompanied by a very good driver , who kept my father very interested by his knowledge of history.
We had a perfect day! Our driver, George, was so friendly and knowledgeable. He gave us rest stops and guidance on how to best navigate our stay and provided many recommendations. It was a gorgeous drive & very comfortable! The whole experience could not have been better. Thank you for handling all the details! Olympia itself was awe-inspiring!! Was absolutely the high point of an already massively impressive trip
Nicholas was very knowledgeable and pleasant We really enjoyed our tour would recommend him to our friends traveling in Greece
Nick from My Athens Transfers was great. We got there and back safely, saw everything we wanted to see and had a great time. We even had time to eat lunch and explore the cute town for a few minutes.
Nikolas was the best driver. Stopped when we needed to use the restroom. Provided information along the way about the towns and sites we got to see and was very patient as we did our tour. 10/10 recommend
Nick was awesome on our tour! He had great knowledge and recommendations and the drive was very comfortable. I was also surprised how beautiful the countryside drive was. Olympia was a bit hot in June so be prepared for that, most of it is inside besides the ruins though.
We had a great trip with Nick as our guide! The drive is long but worth it. He was a safe driver and very knowledgeable. The food after was tasty. The site was neat!
George was wonderful! The trip to Olympia was fantastic. George was super knowledgeable and gave us a much needed refresher of Greek history. We were given plenty of time to visit each site in addition to having lunch at a local restaurant. My family and I highly recommend this trip with George as your tour guide.
From start to finish our guide held us captive with tales of battles and Greek Gods! He knew so much and delighted in retelling tales!
We had an incredible experience on this private tour! Having our own vehicle made the day feel relaxed and personalized—we could go at our own pace without ever feeling rushed. Our driver was extremely knowledgeable and offered great suggestions throughout the journey, which really enhanced the trip. It was a truly memorable day!
George was very much helpful with details of the history related to the places we visited and took our opinion every time we took a break. He also stopped for a small break at beach on the return journey. The tour was worth to know about Corinth and Olympia in detail. I would recommend this trip to anyone who are planning to visit Olympia.
We had a marvelous time! Our tour driver/guide was incredibly knowledgeable about Greece’s History, and also culinary endeavors, social nuances and anything in between! There was no way to stump Michael! So nice, polite and an excellent driver to put some icing on the cake! We wholeheartedly recommend My Athens Transfers (www,myathenstransfers.com) for any tours they offer and specially Michael for how extraordinary he made our day trip to Olympia!
Olympia's archeological site and the two museums were great. Lunch was very delicious, and our driver George was very knowledgable about everything.
This is mostly just transportation to and from Olympia, which we knew before we booked, so it was what we expected. Our driver stopped at the Corinth Canal on the way, which was very interesting. Once in Olympia, we had plenty of time to explore the archaeological site and museum and have lunch on our own in town. We did have some trouble contacting our driver after we toured the area and were a little afraid we wouldn't find him again, but it all worked out!
Nick drove safely and was so a kind man. He gave us Some bottles of water We appreciate to looong drive. It was memorable trip.
So grateful for our amazing driver, Greg. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the areas we drove through. He went above and beyond and gave us ponchos since there was a chance of rain. This isn’t a guided tour so you are paying for the drive there and back and lunch, but it was well worth it to not have to deal with the traffic and just enjoy the experience.
The excursion was made special because of our gracious driver, Costa. We received extra historical facts en route. Costa is very attentive, set a good pace & made good timing for the tour. Ancient Olympia is one of the many marvels of historical importance. Probably could have benefited from a guide, but waking the sight was fine for us. Enjoyed a nice lunch at Ambrosia Restaurant, located on site. Costa took us to the Olympic Stadium in Athens before returning us to our hotel. Very nice experience!
My wife and I went to Olympia from by the Athens airport for a one day trip. Our driver was Costandino. The trip is 3.5 hours each way. Costa made the trip go by quick as he was knowledgeable in Greek myth, Greek history and knowledge of each area we passed through. He also has knowledge of American film and rock music. His renditions of famous phrases from movies were as good as any Americans. We had a great time. Olympia was amazing also. Costa also put us on a good restaurant that had great dolmades. I highly recommend Costa as a tour driver.
What an incredible day trip with George! Our car ride proved to be the perfect Greek history lesson. It was quite a long day, but George allowed down time and exploring throughout, which was ideal when spacing out the day. Olympia is absolutely worth the journey and the drive west is essentially the best way to see the beautiful mainland of Greece. Can’t recommend enough!
What a great tour, great service with Nickolas, it was a great day, the scenic view was also prt of the tour, and ot was a must see.
Drive was longer than expected..I will not comment on the rest of the trip as it was uneventful for the price paid.
Fantastic day trip. Nick was great! Amazing sites including the canal and Olympia and the museum. Recommended for sure. As a plus get a guide
We had a wonderful day. Would highly recommend this private tour. Nicolas was great! We very much enjoyed this part of our trip.
Spiros was an excellent driver and guide for our day to Olympia. Very comfortable trip and we learnt a lot about Greece. We also stopped at the Corinth canal which is a must.
Had two wonderful trips with Spyros and Fotis. Very knowledgeable and made the journeys very comfortable and enjoyable for the whole family :)
Driver Nick was prompt, friendly, courteous and efficient. The ride felt smooth and safe. Olympia is a great place to make a day trip from Athens and this seems the best way to do it. Well worth it.
Fotis was the best! He is so knowledgeable and was great company. We had the best time. The experience of Ancient Olympia was amazing. Highly recommend.
Very significant sight, obviously, but a guide to explain the site would probably helpful. Their are information boards to explain the area, but it is lot of information to gather.
It was a very well organized trip the vehicle in perfect condition and very comfortable. Special mention for the driver Nick very courteous, informative and helpful all in all a very comfortable and enjoyable trip. Thank you very much.
Ancient Olympia is a testament to the intelligence and tenacity of human beings. It’s beautifully preserved and every stone tells a story. The museums are not to be missed either. Our guide Fotis guided us expertly with very interesting stories and facts. He did not overwhelm us with too much information.
Michael picked us up promptly for our full day tour to Ancient Olympia. It was a long drive from Athens, but the car was modern, clean, comfortable and air-conditioned. Michael was very friendly and has a wealth of knowledge regarding historical sites and Greek mythology, including a passion for archeological history. We stopped at Corinth Canal on the way to Olympia, for a quick rest break and photo opportunity. Ancient Olympia itself is fascinating and we saw everything we wanted in the allotted time. Also had time for a lunch at the Ambrosia Restaurant, which was a great recommendation by Michael. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and would highly recommend My Athens Transfers. Thank you!
Excellent tour. Fotis has amazing knowledge and very helpful across the tour. Well worth the drive and had a snooze on the way back.
We highly recommend this tour. Our driver Nick was excellent and shared with us many details about the tours and good references. He is super professional and represents the company well. Don't forget to reserve your audio-guide at the Olympia.
Quite frankly we could have saved a lot of money by renting a car and driving ourselves. Our driver was a very nice young man but he added nothing additional to the trip save driving. While we did not expect a guided tour from him some perspective on the site would have been nice considering he was raised in Olympia! My impression he was not comfortable with his English skills and new to the job.
Great service, I couldn't fault my trip. My driver for the day was Fotis who excellent, he's a great driver who explained the history of the site and was well informed.
Super friendly, knowledgeable and on time. Gave us lots of information about Olympia and dropped us right by the ticket office.
Our experience was really good. The support and the information given by our driver Notis and Nick was very good. Especially in depth knowledge of Notis for Greece and related topics was really appreciated. We will strongly recommend him for your next trip
Very good driver, very nice views. We enjoyed the trip a lot, and the driver took us to a great restaurant with good prices.
Long trip but very scenic. Tour guide was very accommodating. Research the museum locations and if they are open as there’s not much assistance in that regard.
We had an amazing day. Vasilis our driver/local guide was awesome. His local knowledge was first class and was able to answer all of our questions. He guided us on where to go in Olympia and also helped us chose a lovely restaurant after we had finished. The Olympia site was magical, thinking about where the Olympic movement started and where the torch relay begins every four years. We didn't feel rushed at any time and we would highly recommend this tour.
