About Activity
The 7th-century Monastery of St. Simeon, initially dedicated to the local saint Anba Hedra, who renounced the world on his wedding day, was later rebuilt in the 10th century and rededicated to St. Simeon. This fortress-like monastery served as a base for monks who traveled into Nubia, aiming to spread Christianity among the Nubian population. To reach the monastery, visitors can take a private boat across the Nile and then ascend the mostly paved desert track on foot, or opt to hire a camel for the journey.
