We did this on a Thursday in late August. Firstly, the information on Viator was very unclear about when the experience started and we had to make several attempts to contact the centre to find out. While the health and safety intro was ok, there is absolutely no information given about etiquette (like how to approach a rapid, not to go down three abreast, not to collide with people or how to get out of collisions if you’re in them). You are also fired into the river down a gully without anyone even warning you to store your electronics etc. The number of kayaks and canoes on the river for the first hour or so is far too many and is often pretty stressful and dangerous. It felt more like dodgems than kayaking and I was crashed into many times by other people. In one crash I was capsized by other people and my phone was completely drenched. I didn’t enjoy the section between the start and the first stop at all. After that it was quieter because people got out and much more pleasurable.

Itinerary
The descent of the Sella in canoe or kayak (paddles), is among the star activities within adventure sports in Asturias. Very well known thanks to the International Descent of the Sella, a sporting event that gathers athletes from all over the world on the first Saturdays of August (after the 2nd of that month). The activity invites you to get into a kayak or canoe to safely go down the river from our facilities to one of the designated arrival points we have. The start time is from 11:00 AM with continuous departures until 1:00 PM, and the deadline to finish at any of the three stops is 5:30 PM. It takes place on the stretch of the river between Arriondas and Llovio (16 km) in Ribadesella - although we offer you the option of doing shorter sections, which you can choose during the descent, such as the Margolles bridge (8 km), Llordón (11 km), and the aforementioned one in Llovio. From each of these points we will transport you in vehicles back to the starting point.

If you want to paddle down a river in a kayak with no back rest (other outfitters have nicer and newer ones) with another 1,000 people then this activity is for you. The river is filled with thousands of kayaks all going down at the same time and crashing into one another. Ridiculous.
RanaSella did a great job! Was easy to find their location by a car (actually, it's a big school of sport activities). We got all instructions in English and individual kayaks and went all they way down the Sella River (17km). It was pretty crowded during 12km, then the river became calmer :) Recommended!
DO NOT DO THIS ACTIVITY IN AUGUST WITH A FAMILY! The river is teeming with boats, most of the people have never been in a kayak before and have NO idea what they are doing. It was impossible to paddle without getting run into by another boat every 30 seconds. The kids were terrified. Not relaxing nor enjoyable at all. The guy at the company told me in August the only people who have fun are the drunk ones.
We had a great day on the river. Weather was perfect, not too hot. The staff were very friendly but the instructions as to where the pick up points along the river were a little hazy. At no point did we see any signs for our company so they may need to get bigger ones. We had intended to do the full 6km so it didnt matter but it might to other day trippers. There are lots of companies in the area so take your time finding yours as we went to the wrong place initially. It was a much smaller out fit so suited us perfectly. I would highly recommend you do this activity if you are in the area but weekends are very busy so wise to go early.
When we arrived we were a little late as we went to the wrong school first but we were greeted with smiles and support that immediately put out minds at ease. With limited Spanish is was really helpful that there was an instructor fluent in English to explain the rules then we were off. A self guided trip down the Sella. There were three of us my son (10) and I went in a double kayak and my 15 year old daughter took a single. We got the packed lunch and would recommend as good value and tasty. Whilst on the kayak you have a water tight barrel for your valuables, big enough for towels and your lunch. There are 3 points where you can be collected. The full trip is 16km but there are well sign posted pick ups at 8km and 12km. We came off at 12km. Most of the river is calm with little faster parts and one rapid where I saw others fall in.
TLDR: Beautiful river and friendly staff. Hordes of children, essentially an obstacle course on the water avoiding screaming kids. Overall very fun experience and the chaos of the day added to our trip. Arrived 10:50 eager to get in the water. We have previous kayaking experience and so know how to be safe etc. Our guide gave a safety and technique demonstration in Spanish to other customers first. He then tried his very best to explain the same thing in English to us. However, at one point he began imitating a train which we eventually worked out meant the that final finishing point (there are multiple down the river dependant on how long you want your journey to be) was at a train bridge. We did not get any safety or paddling information. We only speak a little Spanish ourselves, and therefore this is not the guides fault. We take full responsibility for being in Spain and not speaking the language. If we were really concerned we would have used Google translate or asked for another member of staff. It just added to the overall hilarity of our day. We were then promptly popped in a kayak and shot down a ramp into the river. As we hurdled towards the river the carnage before us unfolded. A sea of red, yellow and green kayaks littered the river. The deafening screams of, quite literally, hundreds of children danced in the air. Immediately we were ducking out of the way from paddles left, right and centre. Children were being shot down ramps from the embankments above, lambs to the slaughter. This felt like being thrown into an active war zone. It was every man, woman and child for themselves. After a few hours navigating through capsized kayaks we did eventually see some ducklings and fish. However, if there is any other wildlife in this river it had well and truly ran a hid for cover (understandably). The second half of the journey was beautiful as there are rolling hills and clifftops ahead of you. This was my favourite part of the trip. After finishing at the train bridge (all exit points are signposted well in Spanish) we called the company who very quickly arranged for a driver to come get us. Our driver was very friendly and got us back to the car park as if he was Fernando Alonsos brother. The showering and bathroom facilities were very clean and staff were very friendly and helpful throughout. Everyone took their time with us, tolerated our awful Spanish and where necessary used Google translate to converse with us. This review is overall positive. I assume we just booked a day where there was a school holiday perhaps? It added to the fun of the day and I would recommend this to others. It can be very busy, but if you have the right mindset even that can be fun.
One of the best memories in Spain! Staff and service is credible very knowledgeable and we felt safe the entire way. I would say the river is fast flowing in few areas and probably level one or level two rapids in some places. After the first stop most people bail out therefore would recommend to do the entire journey which is a lot more peaceful and very scenic. The kayaks are in good condition and very comfortable. Highly recommend this Tour!
Amazing experience! I highly recommend it and everyone in this company was friendly and nice, specially the driver who came and picked us up at the end of the river! Well organised and quick service!
Well organised by the ‘frog’ company so four stars for them but only three stars for the overall experience because there were so many kayaks on the river (perhaps what you should expect on a warm sunny day in August, but the frequent jostling of kayaks did diminish the enjoyment somewhat). Otherwise, lots of people and dogs of all ages enjoying themselves! Plenty of stopping points, with cafes, along the way to pull over and take a break from the log jam
The Sella River is so picturesque and the kayaking was superb. It's a 0-1 'rapids' section of the river, so for us two older folx with minimal kayaking experience, it was perfect. There are 3 options for exiting the river depending on your stamina. A basic picnic (meh) is provided. This is not a guided experience but they do give you all the info needed to help you feel safe. Highly recommend! [But skip the picnic.]
Great experience but short of instructions in English re approaching the rapids. We capsized our kayak at the second rapid after hitting a rock- one of us was bumped on the head and later diagnosed with mild concussion. We managed to right kayak but as we did so, discovered that the barrel wasn't very secure and nearly floated away. However, the scenery was magnificent and we really enjoyed our paddle. Good value too.
Unbelievably beautiful and interesting. I completed the 16km course, there were options to finish before then. Great holiday activity as a solo person or as a group.
It is a well run tour and efficient, however, it is very popular so was very busy when we went. We did have a great time but it was a bit like bumper cars (in kayaks) at some points.
We are a family of 3 with a 17 year old who had his single kayak, whilst the parents took a double. The instructions were alright but perhaps including a start time would be helpful. In actual fact, they have continuous departure of kayaks down the river from 11-1. There’s a car park conveniently and registration was pretty efficient. We had an English speaking instructor who was most helpful and kept it simple. We absolutely loved the experience and did the whole 16km. You can bail out at 8, 12 or finish at km 16. The crowds ( and I do mean crowds, as it’s a popular activity) will dwindle after 8km so if you can, do the entire stretch. Beautiful scenery, sufficient packed lunch included, and one can even have a swim in certain parts of clearer waters. You can take as long as you like but be at a pick up by 6pm.
We had to cancel the day before due to an injury after a fall while hiking. I called and emailed them to explain our situation asking for a refund and never heard from them.
Great experience kayaking down the river. Good service. It was easy to check in and get going. It’s a good idea to start early, it’s a looong way down. Easy but long. We had a great day.
Nice river kayak. Took 3.5 hrs with paddling most of the time. Bring own lunch as stale sandwiches. Very timely and waiting for us when we got to the blue bridge.
Our family had the best time kayaking down the Sella River! The Staff was friendly and helpful and had us on our way pretty quickly. We enjoyed running the river at our own pace and stopping for a sack lunch with beautiful views of the mountains. We would highly recommend this experience on a nice, sunny day. So fun! Note: We were myself and my husband, and my son (12) and daughter (9). We took 2 boats and it was very easy for all of us. The river was not high or too technical.
Booked online! The process was very, very easy and fast! Staff was wonderful. We enjoyed a really lovely day in the river. Once we reached the last stop, they helped put the stuff away, we just had to carry our things!
Really lovely day. Staff very friendly and helpful. Picnic was delicious. Center was in a great location, excellent showers and toilets and a lovely seating area and bar to enjoy coffee or drink after being on the water. The river was lovely but too shallow in places so we ran aground quite a few times. No rapids really to speak of so this is a gentle relaxing kayak rather than for excitement. All in all a great day.
Unique experience, recommended if you go north, you can do it with your pet, medium physical demand level
It was sunny, cloudy, and it rained on us for a moment, and even so, it was great.
Highly recommended, I loved it 😊
Very fun experience and fantastic scenery. They give practically all the necessary material and a lot of freedom. I recommend doing it with friends.
Excellent organization! Large parking lot at the launch point Packed lunch + impeccable recovery at the end of the journey + shower on arrival
The canoes are very small, a person 1.85 tall and 95kg does not fit in the canoe. There is VERY LITTLE WATER and you get grounded on many occasions. Improveable of course, 3rd time we make the descent and we happen the same
It was a wonderful experience. The only bad thing is the festival so close and the people hungover. They should take that event away because the routes masters with children
The Sella River is overcrowded with kayaks, lots of people. You're tripping over kayaks. Although I must say that the place is beautiful.
FrogSeals an equipment, the boy who attended us was very nice, very professional, we had him also at the delivery of the picnics, I was very detailed with my celiac son. The very good material, you rating that they take care of it. The descent went well, my children were very happy, the only thing is that there were so many people who end up being somewhere a little dangerous, most people do not know how to use a canoe, and to slow down they crash. We will repeat again with RanaSella hoping that there are fewer people:))) Thank you very much
I recommend 100% Very funny! Easy, you don’t have to be an athlete or know how to canoe to do it. I feel like repeating.
1) We got confused at the entrance, because there is another adventure park just before and the Ranasella sign was small. 2) The information was very brief, and the stops were not specified correctly. In fact the first stop is very small. We weren't given any extensive instruction on how to use the oars either, and for those of us who have never ridden before, it wouldn't have been a bad idea. 3) On the way back in the van, my seatbelt doesn't work.
We spent a fantastic morning canoeing with my two children aged 9 and 5. From the start, the team was very welcoming and attentive. The little boy was with Miguel, one of the monitors, throughout the tour, and I can’t help but thank him for his patience and professionalism. My son felt safe, accompanied and happy, he enjoyed it so much! At first we had a hard time finding the rhythm – it’s not that easy to row together! – but Miguel encouraged us at all times, without pressure, with a lot of patience and empathy. At first there was a school group, but then the atmosphere became calmer and we were able to connect with the calm surroundings. The tour is beautiful, with spectacular natural views and moments of genuine disconnection. An ideal family activity, well organized and with a team of ten. We will repeat without a doubt!
We have a great time, you can do it quietly with children, it is true that there are crowds of people, but usually it is all with great respect, the water does not cover in many areas, so if the kayak gets stuck you can manipulate on foot, of course, do not go barefoot. A joy.
A really good experience. We were slid into the water by boat and off we went. There were many other tourists on the way by boat, but that was easy to manage. The nature is breathtaking and the water so clear that you could see the fish. We mastered the rapids well despite little experience. But now we have sore muscles because we chose the 18km untrained - it was worth it.
It was a fabulous experience doing the descent of the Sella in Kayak with my son. We defended ourselves pretty well and had no incidents. Also the weather was great, because it was cloudy we had no heat.
Definitely the best company to do the lowering of the seal. From the facilities, with a huge parking lot, to the quality of the canoes and especially the human part. Always attentive to make the experience unforgettable. We'll repeat for sure.
Everything is well organized. You get good explanations and the pick-up also went smoothly. The setting is beautiful and it is a fun family activity. Keep in mind that it can be extremely busy with other canoeists. We hadn't realized that.
I made the descent of the Sella on 3/8/24 and the service was terrible (not the descent itself which is highly recommended). This is the third time I’ve done it (the first with ranasella) and it was by far the worst of all. 1) One of the reasons I had contracted with ranasella was because they had assured me that I had parking (I had previously spoken to them by phone and they assured me). They told me to go before 9:30 and I did. But, surprise, I couldn't access the parking lot. Not least because a frog van had Locked one of the entrances to the facility. After spending over an hour trying to access the facilities by car, which was impossible, I had to pay for parking elsewhere. I have told several frog people about this and they did not care 2) We arrived at the facility at 11.15 and... IT WAS CLOSED!!! And they didn't open again until 12:30!!! Amazing! I had not been told this either on the web or when I spoke on the phone. 3) Once we could get in and they gave us the equipment we went with a monitor who was going to “explain” us. Beyond some basic instructions (which it is true that not much more is needed) I spend much of my time “scolding” ourselves as children by repeating several times about what we are responsible for the equipment and about the pickup points in a tone not according to adults from my point of view. 4) Once the descent was done we parked the canoe where the frog sign was (at stop 2). But those who were there of ranasella did not like where we parked and made us do a lap (get back in the river advance and repark the canoe) all to advance... about 4/5 meters because, I understand, they did not want to drag the canoe those meters more on the shore. I put the assessment on the service, not on the descent of the label which is more or less the same with all companies. My Personal Impression is that it is the typical company that knows / thinks that the vast majority of people only perform the descent once and do not repeat, therefore it does not matter a little bit the service offered to them, total will not return. I do not recommend this company, especially there are so many and being able to choose other options that better treat the customer.
Precios calidad precio razonables. Explicaciones de los monitores estan bien Divertidos e increíbles
Wonderful experience and wonderful company and monitors, we were 3 family friends with several children (two of them 4 years old) and another child with reduced mobility, Aron and Laura made a wonderful experience, super pending, kind and prepared, we will repeat, thank you
We did canyoning with the best of the guides Pepe accompanied by Aaron's crack...It was our first time doing canyoning and Pepe made it super easy taught us many techniques including MariaAntoñeta what a laughter a phenomenon Pepe super professional very concerned always that everything was in order our safety the first and second thing we enjoyed Pepe we did not return with our young son for reasons of time but we visited your friends in Gran Canaria Victor and Miguel other crack like you see you next summer if or if many hugs continue with that incredible way of showing people like me places and ways so fun and beautiful to discover nature a 💯 for you
We did the long descent of 16 km, the landscapes are very suggestive, it was wonderful to feel immersed in greenery and silence (we were lucky, we were practically alone) It's both relaxing and challenging because, even if calmly, you have to paddle for 4 hours with a wet bottom... I didn't have any problems but I'm used to it. Very practical is the fact that, if you want to stop at the previous stages, you can do so and call the guys who will come and pick you up immediately. Absolutely do it
We will repeat again, I went with my wife and we promised to return. Rana seals a company dedicated to this spectacular activity for the treatment they gave us. The Soto brothers are great professionals. Thank you very much
Excellent views, good organization, worth repeating, if you like doing sports with total relaxation, this is what you need
Very good and very efficient organization. The problem is that at this time of year there are too many people making the canoe descent.
The kayak descent was very good. The flow of the river at this time is a little tight, but that makes the experience a greater stimulus. The fact of sharing it with 1998 other canoes was barely noticeable. An experience to repeat in another season of the year to be able to enjoy it even more.
The experience was incredible through this company that manages the descent. There are many companies that have this work, we specifically went through this one and everything was perfect. Impeccable attention, monitors and management.
