An excellent and interesting tour covering both the Franciscan legacy of Assisi and the local culture and history. Our guide (Werner) was obviously experienced and knowledgeable with a warm personality and engaging way of explaining what we saw.

Itinerary
Meet the guide at 10:30am and visit the old Roman ruins of the local amphitheater, which was reused in the Middle Ages as a quarry for stones to build local houses. You will see how the amphitheater was turned into a private neighborhood. From there, the view toward the Rocca Maggiore medieval castle is one of the best in the city. Through narrow alleys and medieval squares you will reach Saint Rufino’s Cathedral and Saint Claire's Basilica. From there, you will get to the main city square, Piazza del Comune. At the square you will see one of the best-preserved Roman temples in Italy – Minerva's temple – which is surrounded by imposing medieval government buildings. The tour will then head down to the Basilica of Saint Francis which is world-famous for its 13th-14th century frescoes by the best painters of Italy at that time. Among those, the most famous is Giotto.
The Basilica of St. Clare of Assisi, realized with the typical pink stone extracted from the quarry of the Subasio mountain, contains precious frescos dating back to the period from the XIIth to the XIVth century. In the chapel on the right, along the unique nave of St. Clare of Assisi, finishing in transept and polygonal apse, you can admire the Crucifix which, according to tradition, would have invited St. Francesco in the church of St. Damiano in order to "reset up the Church"
Chiesa Nuova. The Chiesa Nuova is a church in Assisi, Italy, built in 1615 on the site of the presumed birthplace of St. Francis, the house of Pietro di Bernardone. It was then called Chiesa Nuova because it was the last church to be built in Assisi at that time.
Assisi Cathedral, dedicated to San Rufino (Rufinus of Assisi) is a major church in Assisi.
The Temple of Minerva is an ancient Roman building in Assisi, Umbria, central Italy. It currently houses a church, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, built in 1539 and renovated in Baroque style in the 17th century.
Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the basilica of St. Francis was built under the direction of Brother Elias, vicar general and architect of the order, starting in 1228, just two years after the saint's death, as a place designed to receive his remains.
If the solemn and dark lower basilica invites penance and silence, the upper church soars into the sky, airy and bright. In a Gothic style with French influences, the nave has four bays, cross vaulting, and a polygonal transept and apse.

Amazing!!! Emanuella has a vast knowledge of all the history and religious practices of Assisi, She is easy to understand and is permanently positive. She asked what experience we would like to have and delivered exceptional service. We were lucky to have her to ourselves and she observed all the customary rules and allowed us to enjoy every minute. When asked about different aspects, ie the Pilgrim church, she explained it thoroughly, as she had researched it in University. Bravo- Malta Benny
Our tour guide was knowledgeable, confident and friendly. She clearly had a wide knowledge of art, architecture, and the history of Assisi. We also appreciated her knowledge of St. Francis and his followers. She looked out for the entire group and engaged questions and conversations very well.
First thing it was a rainy day but that did not dampen the experience. Our guide was very detailed throughout the tour sharing so much information. You could feel her passion and that made it so enjoyable. We are in awe of the beauty and grandeur of what we saw.
Great tour our guide really knew the history and area and seemed to love sharing. A little disappointed it was such a big group there were supposed to be e 2 guides and one didn’t show.
This was an amazing experience. It was very informative & my favorite tour so far o. Alessandra was the best.
Very knowledgeable and animated guide.
This tour was absolutely incredible. Highly recommend!! Our guide was absolutely wonderful and very knowledgeable. There is a lot of walking and stairs, but if you are ok with that it’s a must do!
Thought this was a golf cart tour like the other tour we took in Rome. The one that ended short after getting pulled over by the cops. Overall spent $600 for 6 hours worth of tours and got 2 hours of site seeing. This company farms out the tours to local companies and has zero customer service. Canceled our third tour not worth the risk.
Our guide was fantastic. So knowledgeable. Totally enjoyed and learned so much
Excellent introduction and overview of Assisi. Guide is very knowledgable and very clear. Tour is very well organized. Highly recommend this tour.
An excellent tour. Michael was a great guide and gave a great history lesson. The churches were very interesting.
The walk with Marco was great. I attended with my husband and a friend. We got so much more from our visit to Assisi due to our guides knowledge and information about art, architecture, the saints and history. Highly recommend this tour.
Wonderful guide. I knew little of St Francis or St Grace and she explained everything perfectly. Started at the top and went down -good planning!
We had the pleasure of having Marica as our tour guide. She was absolutely the BEST. Her knowledge and passion of Assisi made the tour so enjoyable and fun. She took us down side streets and truly showed us the best parts of this lovely place. She really took her time to explain the back history of every landmark we were seeing. She recommended some of the best places to grab lunch, dinner and where to find the best gelato in town! We had such a good morning and tour with Marica and would recommend her to everyone we know! We have been lucky enough to run into her a few times since the tour and has been the highlight of the trip :) Thank you Marica for making our trip to Assisi one to remember!
Great, informative tour! We saw the churches for St Clare and St Francis. My only negative is that there wasn’t any info given on the new Saint Carlo Acutis. Since he is our first modern Saint and there is a lot of excitement around the city about him, would have been great to include him in the tour.
I recommend Viator travel when booking a tour. Based on my experienced, Viator’s tour guides are very knowledgeable…
Exceptional knowledge of our tour guide. We loved every moment and worth every cent! I would highly recommend this tour for anybody wanting to visit Assisi you can get so much more out of your trip with the right tour guide
This tour would have benefited from headsets. Lots of walking which was expected but also a lot of time lost where more information could have been given. The guide was fine but for me I wish there had been more explication.
Antonella was a fabulous tour guide who spoke with enthusiastic energy on the religious history of Assisi. She taught use a things we did not know from this quaint charming and very clean town. She knew the history of St Francis and Churches that influenced the names of American cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco and the early life of hospitals as a not just medical but wear travelers would stop on their travels for meals which derives the term “hospitality”!
Very knowledgeable guide who captivated our attention and kept an easy pace.
For my family of six, we booked a private tour of Assisi, with our delightful guide Marica, taking us through the spectacular town of Assisi and the amazing sights, including visiting St Clare and St Francis’ Basilica and visiting St Carlo too. We had the best experience and our guide Marica was truly inspiring, filled with passion and love for Assisi, St Francis and St Clare and was so incredibly knowledgeable. My family enjoyed every minute of the tour with her. She was warm and took such good care of our whole group. I highly recommend the tour.
The 2.5 Small Group Tour of Assisi was very informative. We loved learning about the saints and the stories of their lives. The tour guide did a fabulous job in letting us experience how the saints lived as real people during those times. The only criticism we have is that the day was extremely hot, and the tour guide never took that into consideration—never asking us to sit in the shade or consider that people could get heat stroke. It was somewhat insensitive. Overall the tour was very informative.
Tour went for almost 3 hours and our guide (Alessandra) was fantastic and really knew her history but was great in her explanation and was very engaging. Definitely recommend this tour
Alessandra, our guide, was terrific. She is very knowledgeable and personable. We learned a lot about the churches, St. Francis (of course), Santa Chiara, architecture, history, arts and the culture of Assisi. She showed us wonderful frescos of Giotto and explained the artist’s biography. The 2.5 hours went by too quickly!
We had a wonderful time walking through Assisi. We started at the top of the hill and made our way to the bottom where the San Franceso Basilica is located, so it was an easy way down. Our guide was very knowledgeable and told us of the upcoming Calendemaggio festival, and where to secure tickets. We went and had a great time there, too.
Our guide was wonderful. She is a professor and clearly loves the place. She was very knowledgeable about Assisi. She gave an amazing history of Saint Francis and the churches and town. Wonderful morning.
Our tour guide, Werner, was knowledgeable and we enjoyed our tour through the town as well as the locations we visited. Be choosy about where you stop for food, the sandwich and gelato shop in the Vatican section was very expensive and lousy. Make your way back to the upper area of Assisi before stopping for food.
Allesandra was excellent. Excellent voice projection and easy to understand her explanations, etc…..
My sister and really enjoyed our tour guide Francisca ! Very knowledgeable and easy to understand. Would really recommend
Very informative, worth the prive we paid.
It truly is small group (10), lots of walking , and very informative. Our guide Warner very well versed establishing the Roman roots to Assissi. Include Carlos Acutis in one of the stops.
Francesca is a very knowledgeable guide and made our tour excellent!
Our guide Alessandra gave us so much history it really brought Assisi to life for me. She was incredibly kind, patient and always left us room to enjoy a stop without an interruption. Grateful for our group size and Alessandra’s guidance.
Alessandra was a wealth of information. Entertaining & engaging. Helped us to be oriented & appreciate all we saw in Assisi!!! Knowledgeable about Catholic faith!
Alexandra was amazing and frankly this was the best tour I have been on in Italy. She was so knowledgeable and articulate and I learned so much. Highly recommend this tour to get a throrough understanding of Assisi from many perspectives…
Tour was great, lots of information and a passionate presenter. Tour size was perfect and time was given to experience each site.
Assisi is magical and so many details, around every corner, that cannot be gathered from travel books.
Our guide was wonderful. He was so knowledgeable and gave us great information. This is a must do for a visit of this beautiful town.
To begin, we showed up late! However, I reached out to Viator, and had some of the best customer service I ever received. We got caught in traffic, and I thought we would miss the tour entirely, and the wonderful staff helped us through the situation. Once they learned that we would be late, they reached out on WhatsAPP, and kept in contact with me until our arrival. Once we did arrive in Assisi, our guide(Alessandra) and group were extremely easy to find. Upon our arrival, she gave us a rundown of what we had missed, where to go after the tour to see what we had missed, and proceeded to bring us on the rest of the tour. She was absolutely amazing. She made it clear to us from the get go of what we were going to see and what we weren't. The tour, and the city is ABSOLUTELY amazing. Regardless of what you're there to see, you will fall in love with this city. This tour is absolutely worth every penny, and I highly recommend it to anyone. Alessandra was an incredible guide, and we were extremely lucky to have her.
Our guide, Alessandra, was an expert in St Francis studies and had extensive knowledge of everything about Assisi. I recommend this tour.
We had a very knowledgeable guide who was enthusiastic about the history and eager to share it with us.
Excellent tour but not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. Our friend has a bad back and had to drop out toward the end.
Our tour guide was excellent. She was very knowledgeable and informative. She went above and beyond what was expected of her. This was one of the best tours we’ve taken.
An outstanding tour in every way. Our guide was very knowledgeable. We saw everything we wanted to see.
Wonderful tour, wonderful guide. The walk through the city and church’s was beautiful. The guide was patient and had an excellent knowledge of the place.
Major problem was the lack of tour guide enabled audio headset. We were a large group visiting a few churches and other places. Given the need to quietly communicate, the tour should have included the headsets, but didn’t. So for most of the tour it was nearly impossible to hear what the guide was saying. Finally for our last stop, the Papal Basilica, we were required to purchase a headset. It was ironic and unexpected since we had needed headsets for the entire tour. Making us pay for them just for the last place on the tour was ridiculous. We should have been given the headsets at NO Charge from the beginning of the tour. I was disappointed with how this tour was organized.
Francesco was very knowledgeable and patient and helpful. We learned a great deal anb Assisi and the many basilicas and Saints.
Directions were unclear from the provider and not given in a timely manner. We used the app directions feature and were directed to an underground parking structure. We started walking to the meeting location and found we were several minutes away and were walking up hill. We tried using app communication function to find the location by the time someone contacted us the tour had already begun. We were told 13 people found the location and we were the only people that didn’t. We planed this months in advance this was our vacation highlight only to be left behind. We regret not being there and requested a refund with no response.
Could only click on a 4 but would rate it a 5. Our guide was knowledgeable about Assisi, the churches along with the artistry inside and outside of the churches.
