Itinerary
The Basilica of Saint Clare is a church dedicated to and contains the remains of Saint Clare of Assisi, a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi and founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, known today as the Order of Saint Clare.
Erected in 1615 on the remains of a building believed to be the home of St. Francis. The building’s architecture design is from the Renaissance period. The façade, built of brick, is divided by four pillars supporting a Doric entablature, with attic gable, above which rises a hemispherical dome.
Located in the place where the ancient Roman Forum stood, dominated by the imposing Rocca Maggiore, the rectangular square begins at the end of Corso Mazzini which connects it to the Basilica of Santa Chiara. Immediately on the right you can admire the sixteenth-century "fountain of the three lions", revisited in 1762 by Giovanni Martinucci.
The Temple of Minerva is an ancient Roman building. It currently houses a church, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, built in 1539 and renovated in Baroque style in the 17th century. The temple was built in the 1st century by will of Gnaeus Caesius and Titus Caesius Priscus, who were two of the city's quattuorviri and also financed the construction.
The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Assisi, a town in the Umbria region in central Italy, where Saint Francis was born and died
This bright and spacious basilica consists of a single four-bay nave with cross-vaulted ceiling bordered with patterns of crosses and leaves, a transept and a polygonal apse. The four ribbed vaults are decorated alternately with golden stars on a blue background and paintings.

Excellent professional knowledgeable on time patient respectful polite listened to questions and shared facts
The guide showed us many important sites in Assisi. I just wish she talked more as we walked to tell us more about the history of Assisi. She did tell us many interesting facts, but she wasn't like many of the Rome guides who were full of very interesting information.
Furio was a wonderful guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and engaging. We really appreciated his flexibility in tailoring the tour to our interests. I highly recommend!
My daughters and I visited Assisi and scheduled this private walking tour. It was perfect. Our Guide was knowledgeable on the town history having been born and raised there. She was able to answer all of our questions and give us all of the history of this beautiful quiet town. We walked the streets of Assisi and she filled us in on the history of all the beautiful sites that we saw. She also made recommendations for us for after the tour.
Fantastic experience! We are so glad we booked this tour. We learned so much about this beautiful city. Our fabulous tour guide took us to places that we never would have visited had we not done this tour. He was extremely knowledgeable, and very friendly and kind. This tour was definitely a highlight of our trip to Italy!
Our guide was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed spending the time with her. It was, as advertised, a small group - just our family - which allowed for a lot of interaction. Lots of people, especially at the basilica, but an enjoyable experience.
Loved learning about the history of St Francis! As a Catholic, it was so interesting to learn from a local the facts That I didn’t already know. Highly recommend!
Francesca was a delightful and knowledgeable guide. We learned so much on the tour. We would highly recommend it!
Our tour guide was fantastic! We were able to see the sights and have time to do some suggested shopping of local specialties. Highly recommend.
Great tour that put our surroundings in historical and religious context. Our guide was outstanding. Time well spent.
This was a wonderful and informative experience! Highly recommend taking this tour when visiting Assisi!
Franchesca was very knowledgeable, enjoyable. Not sure it could have been any better! Exceptional- beautiful experience altogether!
The guide was kind and extremely informative. All the information was relevant and succinct. I gained new information about St Francis and learned a lot about Clara. She was an amazing woman.
Michele was a wonderful guide full of knowledge of Assisi and the surrounding Umbrian region. He customised the tour to our preferences given it was just my family of 4 attending. He provided the life and history of St. Francis and other figures important to the area. We highly recommend the tour and Michele specifically as he is really a great guide and lovely man.
My tour guide Francesca was knowledgeable, friendly, and so easy to tour with. I thoroughly enjoyed my tour with her.
Assisi is a beautiful place and our guide is very knowledgeable. He’s able to keep us engaged with his stories and it was like walking around the town with a friend. Not only did he bring us see the sights but also introduced us to the trades & cultures of Assisi. The 2.5hrs went by in a breeze and he left us with lunch suggestion as well as sights to occupy us in the afternoon, which turned out to be another highlight during our stay in Assisi. Big thank you Werner!
Tour guide was wonderful. She was friendly, knowledgeable, very informative and passionate about Assisi
Excellent tour of Assisi, including Sta Chiara, Sta Maria Maggiore, a city stroll, and the basilicas of S. Francesco. Our guide, Francesca, is a gifted storyteller and an outstanding guide.
The private walking tour was an outstanding experience! Our guide, Francesca, was interesting and extremely knowledgeable about the history, art, and details of the town and basilicas. She readily tailored the tour to our areas of greatest interest. All members of our group had previously visited Assisi and everyone said that they learned a great deal of new information from Francesca.
What a wonderful experience. Our tour guide spoke fluent English and was very knowledgeable with all the areas of Assisi he walked us through. I highly recommend taking the tour if anyone is thinking of visiting Assisi. If you don't, you will be missing a lot!
Begoña is the best! She has a great charisma and passion for the city of Assisi. We did a tour with four little ones and she was able to keep them engaged and the kids loved it as well as the adults. Beautiful to get to know the history.
Our guide Simone was very nice despite us being 45 mins late as we got our communication mixed up. Apologies! She was patient & very knowledgeable in all the sites we visited. A great experience .
Werner was a great guide for our family of 6 (2 adults and 4 teenagers). He gave us a comprehensive history of Assisi, St. Clare, St. Francis, as well as the opportunity to visit the tomb of Carlo Acutis, and provide us with a wonderful lunch option, too. He helped us find shelter during some thunderstorms, and gave us additional information about other churches and things to see in Assisi. We would definitely recommend Werner to anyone looking to learn more about Assisi and the saints who left their marks there so long ago.
Interesting and excellent experience by knowledgeable and personable guide. Rich detail and history.
My friend and I were heading to Assisi for the first time and we knew that we needed a guide in such a historic city. First of all, it is a beautiful city as you approach by car. Once in the city there is so much to see! We were fortunate to have such a wonderful expert guide to take us around the city and explain all the significant places. Margharita was fantastic! We had such a wonderful time.
Travellers should be aware that the terrain in Assisi is quite hilly so lots of up and down walking but nothing to do with the tour itself. The atmosphere in Assisi is one of peaceful reflection and spirituality, underlined by the presence of many groups of religious orders we encountered on our journey. Our guide Michele was sensitive to our physical needs as it was very hot and walking was slightly problematic due to a back injury I had sustained previously. Michele was proactive in that he had looked us up on WhatsApp and was able to approach us at the meeting point, knowing what I looked like. Michele is a mine of information and brought to life not only the history of Assisi but also current religious issues and controversies. We had heard previously about Carlo Acuti, the young man who was beatified in October 2020, (is to become a saint) and were very privileged to be taken to see him lying in state in his Nike trainers and jeans in the chapel of Santa Maria Maggiore - an extraordinary, unique and unforgettable experience. The tour also included the Basilica of St Francis which is absolutely beautiful and seemed a fitting resting place for an extraordinary man. We thoroughly recommend this tour.
Assisi is a lovely town. Tour guide was very knowledgeable about the life of Saint Francis and Saint Clare.
Really enjoyed our Assisi highlights private walking tour (including the St. Francis Basilica). Our guide was Michele and the tour lasted 2.5 hours. Michele is very knowledgeable and has a relaxed, but informative communication style. He could answer all our questions and demonstrated layers of knowledge that only an experienced guide would have. He was also very good company, and we loved our walking tour with him. Strongly recommended.
Barbara was our guide for Assisi tour. She was gracious and welcoming and shared much information about Assisi with us.
We loved this tour. We saw same beautiful places and learned about the history of Assisi. The vows were amazing.
Alessandra was a delight! Her tours (this is our fourth tour with her) are thorough and entertaining. She is personable, smart, funny, and generous. We learned a great deal about the art, the people (ancient and modern), the town, and the culture. We will be sure to tour with her again in the future.
A really insightful and spiritually fulfilling day in Assisi. Our guide was extremely well versed, thoughtful and not once made us feel rushed (our 15yr old son and 11yr old daughter were part of the tour). Assisi, given its beauty and spiritual significance is a place meant to be taken in slowly and our guide gave us the space to do just that. Would definitely recommend.
Francesca was a wonderful guide. Very knowledgeable and very patient with her time. Very informative and really gave you a sense of the rich history of Assisi and St Francis.
Our guide was first rate. He made changes to the tour to accommodate my 94 year old father and his knowledge of Assisi and St Francis was first rate. He has a passion for the subject and this made the tour really come to life.
We had an excellent tour of Assisi. Not only is Alexandra a local born and raised in Assisi, she is an extremely professional and organized guide who presents the information in an interesting way. She's also charming and a pleasure to spend a couple hours with. Outstanding.
Francesca, our guide, was friendly and knowledgeable, but I did not think the tour was worth $40 per person. The guide spent too much time explaining and I don't believe enough places were covered. We did not have headsets so it was difficult at times to understand. I think you can navigate assisi without a guide. A waste of money.
The sites of Assisi were brilliantly brought to life by our brilliant guide Daniella. Her English was excellent and she skillfully illuminated our walking tour with interesting historical detail. Daniella also provided lots of contemporary detail and interest to our tour. All our family loved the tour and would 100% recommmend it.
Barbara Bellini was friendly and very knowledgeable. I learned much about painters from medieval to renaissance times. I had fun and she told the history for me. I will return in sept 2025 with friends
I studied the life of St. Francis and the life of Claire before I came. I did my homework. Alessandra, my tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the lives of Francis and Claire, the memorable events, their circumstances, and all the characters that played vital roles. Thus, as we walked the Basilica of St. Claire, for instance, it all came alive. There, hanging there, was the Cross that spoke to Francis. Alessandra explained that in the Middle Ages there was no film, radio or TV; no video, iPhone or internet. The paintings, statues, frescoes, served as cultural textbooks as it were. Alessandra ‘read’ these to me which gave me great context for understanding the lives and times of Claire and Francis. Then, of course, there are the samadhis of Claire and Francis. These are sacred sites of the first order. Alessandra showed me the way there and gave me as much time as needed to personally pay my respects. Then there is the artwork. The Basilica of St. Francis. We spent a good deal of time there. It is simply too much to take in in one visit, but Alessandra gave a terrific head start. Cimabaue, Giotto. She told me the back stories behind their creations. She also explained the stories their artwork represented. Then she explained how different materials faded at different rates (wet vs dry frescoes) and how paints containing more iron oxidize creating a photo negative effect. On our walk through Assisi - St Claire’s Basilica is on the east and St Francis’s is on the west- Alessandra was very helpful in pointing out the best shops, where to get information, where to catch buses and taxis, and which public performances were upcoming. Please understand that there is a lot more I gained. Actually I am leaving out most of the tour, but I hope you get the feeling that it was a tour and a half by any standard and one I recommend most highly.
Our guide was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and absolutely lovely. We were given so much information in a captivating way and were invited to ask any questions. We were made to feel comfortable and reassured we could take the tour at the pace that suited us and have breaks (it was very hot). It was amazing to see such beautiful sites and we had a very mixed group of teenagers, young people in their 20s and parents and she managed to engage and hold all of our attention. We would highly recommend this tour.
Antonella was an excellent tour guide. Bright and accommodating to our needs. We were a group of six. You could feel her passion for Assisi and the artwork she shared with us. This is an excellent tour of the town and the historical landmarks. 2 hours.
Our guides Alessandra was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable of the history of Assisi and the local churches. The information on St Clare and St Francis was a highlight. Highly recommend as long as you request Alessandra
This was an excellent private walking tour in Assisi focused on St Francis. Margherite was very knowledgable and fun to spend a few hours with. I highly recommend Margherite.
Our guide is so proud of where she lives, and the City she loves. Really made a huge difference. Offered insight into St. Francis' life and accomplishments, as well as the history of Assisii itself.
Wonderful insights by our guide. Beautiful city. Very inspiring history of St Francis and St. Clare.
Our guide was absolute fabulous with so much in-depth knowledge - our tour went for 3 hours and we could have happily done another 3! Highly recommend booking with a small group.
Our guide was Antonella and we met her at Piazza Santa Chiara as planned. We were a party of 6 and it was just us. We had a fantastic time. Antonella's knowledge of art, history, the Church, St. Clare and St. Francis was outstanding and completely engaging. We were able to experience Assisi emotionally, intellectually and artistically. Highly, highly recommended. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience.
Had a wonderful time on this tour! Begonia was a fantastic guide who provided excellent historical information about the areas we explored in Assisi. She was extremely knowledgeable about Assisi and the history of Saint Frances and Saint Clare. I had many questions and all were answered. Great experience. Highly recommend!
Our tour of Assisi with Alessandra was exceptional! From the moment we started her knowledge captivated us and we learned so much about St. Francis and St. Clare. I would highly recommend using this wonderful woman as your tour guide. You will be very happy you did! Mary and Larry
