Two nights in the Serengeti place you at the heart of one of Earth's most celebrated ecosystems, with the option to rise at dawn for a hot air balloon flight over the plains. Your morning game drive explores Lake Manyara National Park, a compact 330-square-kilometre reserve that packs remarkable variety into its groundwater forest, acacia woodland and open grassland. Look for elephant, buffalo, giraffe and baboon troops, and keep an eye on the branches for the park's famous tree-climbing lions. More than 400 bird species have been recorded here, with flamingos and pelicans often lining the shore. After lunch at the lodge, the journey continues north to the Serengeti, entering through Naabi Hill Gate as the plains open out toward the horizon. Game viewing begins along the way, and you reach your lodge, set high on a wooded ridge near the Western Corridor, in time for dinner.
