The experience felt so disconnected. It was like you just walking through the park The animals and the staff. Everything felt lazy. Not a very fun experience for the kids.

My experience at the Phoenix Zoo was outrageous and deeply disappointing. We were denied entry because we were with my son's service dog, who suffers from anxiety and needs to be accompanied by him. Two children were left unable to enjoy their visit. The employee's attitude seemed cold, insensitive, and completely lacking in empathy. I felt that my son's needs did not matter to her at all. As a parent, it is painful and infuriating to see a family outing end in such an experience. I believe we received discriminatory and humiliating treatment. A place that welcomes families should have staff trained to handle these situations with respect and sensitivity. What we experienced felt like a disgrace. I hope the management investigates what happened, reviews how their staff treats families with service dogs, and provides us with a serious response. I have a photograph of the employee to identify her to management. I left with two children without their visit and a huge disappointment. After this treatment, I cannot recommend this zoo.
This is a great zoo! Visiting during the day is a joy and a great way to learn about local, AZ, fauna. Roars and Pours is also a very affordable blast! It generally happens the first Thursdays of the months in the spring and fall. Very affordable entry, free samples, very affordable drink options and the animals are often very active in the cooler evening hours.
It was a family oriented trip and we had a good time. You can take snacks and drinks inside or purchase food.
How sad!! 40 dollars to get in , then 40 dollars to rent scooters for family with handicaps. Get in, saw 4 or 5 animals out in open at 9am. What a jole, that and they want money to do anything extra, 5 dollars for a water. would rather spend our money, and we will on other things in the area. Would NOT recommend this place to anyone. Stay home and watch the Nature channel, get more enjoyment for alot less money. It has become a money grab. Shame on you Phoenix Zoo. The animals and visitors deserve better.
As a veteran health professional I feel compelled to write this review . This zoo should be renamed -Habitat Phoenix and here is why - Each animal is catered to in this non profit organization. The projects they initiate to protect the animals is beyond exceptional . After a high recommendation at the entrance - I chose the Discovery Tour - This offers a more individualized tour with more detailed information . Kathy was my guide and driver -and she was fabulously outstanding - She has been there for eight years / The animals know that she loves them and respond often accordingly . She knows every name of each animal -from giraffes to the rhino from the orangutang to the camels - She knows all the best info - who is mating with who - which is the mother and the auntie - which of them are besties etc etc . I was riveted . I felt that I can cross a safari off my list - I had front row seats to so many animals that I wanted to see with the absolute best guide ever !!!!
The Phoenix Zoo seems to have an identity crisis. We enjoyed the animals, but would have preferred more exhibits and fewer amusements. We had a lousy lunch experience at the Savannah and the gift shop is insulting if you’re a serious animal lover, unless of course it’s stuffed animals you love. We particularly enjoyed the orangutans, squirrel monkeys, and flamingoes. Trust your exhibits to entertain and educate your guests.
Not impressed, animal enclosures very basic, looks like they spend more on the birthday areas they rent out for a premium price, they nickel and dime you on top of the 39.00 entrance fee ..want to see stingrays more money..want to ride tram more money, ride camels more money and the food prices are like going to MLB game. There are better things to do in AZ.
It’s a fun zoo, lots of animas to see. Quick trip from the airport. On the weekend we went they had some interactive kids areas. Bring your water bottle, they have refill stations, the water isn’t the best tasting but better to stay hydrated. Lots of staff around to tell you about different animals. Our favorite was the tortoises and giraffes.
This is a fairly large zoo with a lot of creatures, mostly birds. There are a lot of interactive spaces with the animals along with a massive petting zoo that seems to be open during certain times only. It is very family friendly. Be sure to bring sunscreen and water though, as there isn't much shade.
It was a good trip. I love the cats of all kinds! The nature and housing options made for the animals was nice.
Every activity is more money - it’s ridiculous to continue paying for things all throughout the zoo. Also no maps so you have no idea
Our family trip included 2 seniors, 2 adults and 8,6, and 4 year-olds for an 11-1:30 trip to the zoo. Fortunately, we went in early April, when the day was in the high 70's and comfortable. The zoo is a little pricey, and not too different from most. However, it was spotlessly clean and easy to walk through, with clear, well maintained stroller friendly paths. The Stingray Exhibit, $5 each for kids and adults, was worth it. It is right at the entrance, but was a highlight for the kids. They petted not too small stingrays and enjoyed it. The train ride around the zoo at $6 each was not too exciting and you really can't see the animals with a clear view from the train. We did walk to an excellent giraffe enclosure with adults and babies, all eating from the trees.
Great exhibits and so much to see. Even though it was a heatwave there were many shaded areas and benches to take a break.
I brought my 10-year-old granddaughter to Arizona for the primary purpose of watching a spring training game. The day before the game, I took her to the zoo… I was not prepared for the 94° weather and unfortunately there were no misters going nor were there any misting fans for sale. The latter would have made it more bearable. On top of all of that everything was as expensive as if you were going to Disneyland without all the rides. They don’t offer a printable map to make things easier to find; you could scan a barcode to get a map, but when you widen it on your phone, it becomes blurry and unreadable. The straws they give you for drinks are supposed to be nature friendly, but they are useless and you need 5-6 just to be able to finish your drink. Unfortunately, for me, I don’t ever believe I’ll be coming back.
The Phinox Zoo was amazing. I am a zoo lover and I definitely saw things here that I have never seen before. It was a great experience!
Such a great little zoo! Easy to navigate, easy to walk, exhibits are clean, the animals look well fed & content, zoo staff are so pleasant and friendly
We had an enjoyable early afternoon visiting at the zoo. We were able to see the animals in most areas although quite a few were napping. It was fun to see such a wide variety of animals.
Pros; Zoo was clean with maps at major intersections [only!]. Staff was always helpful and friendly. Animals appeared well cared for. Cons: I have been to many zoos throughout the world and USA. 3 stars would be a GENEROUS rating. Zoo petting area is far from the beaten path and was closed early to be sure anyone there could have time to exit the gate. No notice to visitors provided. My granddaughter complained three times she was tired of walking to get there. And we we got there they had closed early. Many areas were blocked off or closed - which one did one know until they got there. Not many animals in an exhibit so finding them was a challenge or not possible. The Zoo Store was WAY overpriced. Expected 2X the normal but they hiked prices 3-4 times the normal!
Great zoo, lots of animals. Would definitely visit again. Had a lot of food options, you can also drink alcohol if you want.
We spent a morning strolling through the zoo in the warm January sunshine. The zoo layout promotes meandering as you wind in an out of the exhibits. Because of the rock and roll marathon, we had to park over at the ASU baseball parking lot and walk the 15 minutes to the zoo entrance because of road closures. The upside of this is after arriving around 9 when it opened, we had the place largely to ourselves for an hour or so which was fantastic. The zoo’s marque animal in my opinion are the two Sumatran rhinos and the lions. Sadly the are still exhibiting orangutans. Birds feature significantly across the collection including some people friendly flamingos that came right up to the fence as we observed them. There are also quite a few types of monkeys, hoofed stock and a tiger, leopard a small pride of lions.
This was my first time visiting Phoenix with my friend and we wanted to try this place out. The tickets were a liiitle pricey but thanks to Trip Advisor I got a ticket for only $9!!!
The ticket you sold me was for a different event. I was unable to use it. I was led to believe it was for zoo entrance and the ticket ended up being for the night light show.
The Zoo was worth the trip. It admittedly took 15 minutes driving around to find a parking spot, but it did not seem that level of crowded inside the facility. The layout was spacious. The animals appear to be taken care of, staff was friendly throughout the park, and there was a good variety. It took about 90 minutes to see the entire zoo.
The zoo is very organized, very close to the city, and well maintained. Its a very pretty place with different animals to see. Must of the animals we resting far from the viewing point, and we couldn't see or interact with must of them. We expected more from the experience, maybe we had bad luck with the specific moment we went.
A great zoological park heavy on the birds and animals that are from arid regions. We visited after a 3 day closure sue to storms - and some exhibits were still closed due to damage.
Not sure if having a big diverse zoo is a wise investment for a community like Phoenix. Went to a half dozen habitats before seeing our 1st actual animal. They've all found a cool spot that isn't visible to visititors. We continued to come upon several more habitats where the animals are purposely absent,I assume again because of the heat. There is an Arizona Trail with indigenous animals to the state that were more present. But even there, the big cats and other animals from the mountain regions were hiding. We gave up after 2½ hours between the heat & the boredom. Exiting thru the gift shop I usually buy a patch & a pin from places I visit that are typically $5-6. Here they were $11-14 so I passed I used expiring Viator points to purchase our tickets, otherwise I would have been PO'ed about spending $35 each for our tickets. Didn't leave yearning to come back and try again in more moderate temperatures.
We enjoyed our visit and would definitely visit again! Be prepared for the sun! Allow time for breaks to cool down and stay hydrated!
It was super easy to get into the Phoenix zoo with the digital tickets on Viator. The zoo is great, with lots to see. The only thing to know is that the zoo closes at 1 pm in the summer due to heat. So you need to go early in the day.
It was 116 degrees the day we had pre purchased tickets for - too hot to be outside for 3-4 hours so we didn’t go! We were really disappointed because we visit the zoo every place we visit. So we spent $144 for nothing
The zoo is bigger than it looks from outside. They have scooter you could rent to cruise the zoo bit there are parts that are no ride zones, like the monkey village. Drink plenty of liquid it can be very hot. Zoo it's only open from 7::00 am to 1:00 pm from June through August then the hrs change . They have a gallery that changes theme every month, and of course a gift shop.
This zoo and layout has a lot of unmet potential. There are large enclosures with few animals. I’m not convinced they have an elephant. Could be a great zoo, but needs work.
Was it the best zoo? No. Was it overpriced for what you get? Yes. Was it still a nice day to take a walk around? Yes. A lot of the exhibits seemed closed, or the animals were hard to see. Everything was extra money, like the shuttle (we didn't take) and feeding the stingrays (expect to wait and also get pretty wet). But it was a nice day in early January. Not too hot or cold. My kiddo was sad for no penguins. Food was crazy expensive. We just got a popcorn for the 3 of us to share.
The zoo is extensive and quite a lot of walking but not a problem to us. We are seasoned travellers and is lacking compared with many zoos we have visited. It lacks major animals! One bear, One tiger, Only saw one giraffe though supposed to be more, one leopard, etc. No elephant. Most of the big cats except the lions had no company and exhibited classic boredom pacing back and fourth. Lots of empty exhibits, got annoyed seeing "Animals temporarily off exhibitive". Some of cages and enclosures poor and not up to modern standards. Most cafes closed. Nowhere to get food. Pricey for what it is then you have to pay extra to see manta rays etc. Bit dissappointing.
I have been gone for about 30 years I used to go here alot as a kid I finally moved back home to Phoenix and couldn't wait to visit the place i had so many great childhood memories
The zoo is set in a beautiful area and extremely well kept and clean and open. But we thought it was too spread and very few animals compared to other zoos. We also took the shuttle tour and it was short and we really didn't learn much from the tour and wouldn't recommend spending the money. And we think the entrance fee was high, and the zoo wasn't worth the money. Much more beautiful things to spend your time and money on in the area.
Try to go either later in afternoon when the animals get fed or in the earlier morning (around 9 when zoo opens) before it gets hot and the animals are i in the shade and tough to see.
We’ve been to a lot of zoos around the United States and even overseas and this definitely was in the top 20%. Very thoughtfully laid out and spread out so even if it’s busy, it doesn’t feel crowded. Yes, you’re in the Arizona desert, but there’s lots of shade.
This is a lovely zoo. Has a gift shop , a water play area for the little ones. There is giraffe feeding available. And live Camel rides. We rented motor scooters in the shape of animals and drove around the zoo. It was a wonderful experience. Plenty of parking. Wonderful and kind staff
What a great way to spend a day. It is very large. It was clean, the people that work there are friendly and informative. There is gentle music playing through the park. Some areas are paved and some areas are gravel. There is even a stable. There a cooling stations throughout— def needed in AZ.
The Phoenix Zoo is wonderful, clean, well-laid out. The options for people that need mobility devices was nice
No giraffes or elephants were present. Heard from someone else that the zoo no longer had elephants. We did enjoy the little monkeys in their habitat
Best Zoo I have ever visited. Morning temps were perfect for animal activity. It will take longer than 2 to 3 hours to really see everything. Well worth the money once you realize the quality of the exhibits and grounds.
Perfect day for a family trip to the zoo. Easy breezy digital scan for entry. Saw lots of active animals. Tigers, orangutans, monkeys, giraffes, and reptiles. It was grand babies 1st trip to see animals. At 6 months she was easily able to catch site of a few.
A very walkable ZOO. NO Senior discounts on tickets. Somewhat expensive entrance fee. Clean facility. NO MAPS OF THE TRAILS ARE PROVIDED. A Zoo worker suggested we take the 25-minute trolly ride to set a plan for areas you wanted to visit. However, the trolley ride was an extra charge beside the entrance fee. We walked the entire zoo in 2 1/2 hours at a rather leisurely pace. Naturally the food and snacks are expensive.
it’s was nice seeing the animals but it was sunny outdoors so i would say come prepared. It wasn’t crowded and really nice to walk around .
Very disappointed. Always enjoyed the zoo when the kids were kids, returned today after twenty years. The elephants appear permanently gone, a couple rhinos left in the huge activity area. Most of the displays had a single sleeping animal in them. Plentiful flamingos and Giraffes. Big meerkat area with two critters. No chimps, orangs, gorillas. $36 each to get in and eat a $14 hotdog. Sad, appearance of closing down.
So much fun! Simple purchase for a great day! My partner and I wanted a spontaneous adventure and Phoenix zoo was the choice! Loved seeing the lions!
A very nice zoo! We really enjoyed all the animals. Lots of friendly staff around to answer questions and help you find your way around. Overall we had a great time. My only complaint is that there are several activities (feeding the giraffes, petting sting rays, a carousel, camel rides, among others) which are an additional fee. And they're expensive! I think a ticket should get you access to everything the zoo has to offer. My toddler was disappointed we couldn't feed the giraffes, but it would have been $9 per person which is too much in my opinion. Having to pay for all the additional activities would very quickly add up to be even more expensive than the main entry ticket.
Every few years we make it a point to visit the Holiday Extravaganza at the Phoenix Zoological gardens known as ‘Zoo Lights’… a fabulous menagerie of lights, sounds, counterfeit lit animals and reptiles and many an artificial something or other set alight and sparkling - things that crawl, slither, creep, fly, swing and attract one’s attention either in a subtle or ubiquitous manner or in an extraordinarily, fantastic and unequaled phantasmagorical in your face means. This place can be one of the most fascinating places to visit in the Valley of the Sun, especially when taking a two-year-old or any Youngster on his or her first ecological, nature rendering, visually stimulating and young mind-bending excursion – not to mention a youngsters’ view of the light show in their mind seeming psychedelicish. One takes the whole worldview from a different perspective, that of learning things for the first time and trying to comprehend it – or pure amazement. Even for adults this fantasia will be awesome. It’s hard to imagine that in many ways we have Maytag washer sales to thank for this wonderful Zoo in Phoenix. Way back in 1961, Robert E. Maytag, the grandson of the Maytag Founder got some folks together with the suggestion of a zoo in Phoenix – 63 years later a fantastic Zoo and Zoo Lights! Phoenix is proud. We have our flagship zoo for research, entertainment and ecology, and then some. This is a most fascinating place to visit. Zoo Lights is an opportune time, but anytime of the year it is just fabulous. Kudos patrons, staff, management and donors!
