Itinerary
First stop, Powerhouse Visitors Center/Arizona Route 66 Museum. Thousands of visitors from around the world travel on Route 66 for adventure and education and enjoy the charming and imaginative displays. Modern day explorers will discover a variety of information, including vehicles, photographs, and artifacts gathered over the history of “The Mother Road.”
From the very earliest days, Cool Springs camp and service station was an important stop for motorists traveling Arizona's Route 66. Cool Springs was built in the mid-1920s and has been connected with Route 66 from the very start. The legacy of Cool Springs reflects the larger story of Route 66. The Mother Road gave it life. The hey-day of Route 66 was the hey-day of Cool Springs. Here you'll receive your Route 66 Sidewinder or Cool Springs shirt.
As we continue, you'll experience an exciting drive through winding roads in the Black Mountains to arrive at Historic Mining Town of Oatman in time for their "High Noon" shoot out and lunch (Not Included). Spend a fascinating afternoon in antique shops and interacting with roaming burros. Periodic Gunfights in the street will top your adventure so be sure to have your camera!
Beautiful scenic views. Sitgreaves’ Pass was first mapped out by Captain Lorenzo Sitgreaves in 1851 while on an expedition to see if the Colorado and other rivers could be navigated by steam boat. From the top of the pass at an elevation of 3,550ft (1,082 m), you can see the across the Black Mountains into California and Nevada to the West and across the scenic switchbacks to the Hualapai Mountains in Arizona to the East.
We'll stop at Route 66 Rock Shop. Treasures that are mined from the Black Hills mountain: Fire agate, dinosaur bone rock, and more. We continue up Scenic Historic Route 66 on the section of road named the "Sidewinder". Breathtaking views abound in this section of 66.

I highly recommend this trip!
Great option for experiencing Oatman. They handle the driving so we were both able to relax and enjoy the scenery. Responsible driving in the mountains and around the donkeys on the road. Fun experience.
enjoyable tour, lots of Burro's/Donkeys a nice little town beautiful drive through sidewinder route 66
Absolutely fantastic Tour! Tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly and clearly loves her job. Activities were paced well, not rushed and didn't over stay anywhere. Got to Oatman with plenty of time for an early lunch before the High Noon Shootout show. The Sidewinder Road, 8 miles with 191 sharp curves took great skill to navigate and she did it safely and expertly. From the gentleman who answered the phone last night and gave me exact directions for where I should be for pickup this morning to the guide going above and beyond in every way. This Tour and Desert Wonders is awesome! Thanks so much for the great day!
Excellent tour would like it to bee longer
Our tour guide Ed was on time, courteous and very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the region. He also had great knowledge about the local history! We greatly enjoyed the tour of the Rt 66 museum. He gave great advice regarding the safety around the donkeys and we promptly witnessed what happens when you don’t pay attention. A donkey decided he wanted a person’s shopping bag and he was very serious about getting it. Oatman was definitely an experience! We enjoyed ourselves.
If you live in a city you would enjoy this trip! It’s not like the wilderness but brings you into a country town filled with nature surrounding you. It was relaxing and fun!
Great day trip, many sites to see that may otherwise be missed. Will our guide was great and full of knowledge about the sites we seen and stood we made.
First and foremost our tour guide, Brandon, was great. He was informative, personable, and truly took pride in his job. Will request him on future tours. Next comes the scenery. The mountains are beautiful, the stops were nice, and the locals are all very friendly. Can’t wait to book another trip.
Great trip start to finish. Very likely to use them again in future visits may e even same tour or . The description is right on!!
It was absolutely amazing!! Very informational, and playing with the donkeys was just magical! Our tour guide was great!
Ed was a wonderful driver and had a lot of knowledge of the area.very personable there was only 2 of us but we had a lot of fun we even had Ed laughing
In early October, my husband and I were escorted by Brandon on a tour of absolute enjoyment, just the 3 of us. We motored to Kingman and visited the Route 66 and Electric Vehicle Museum, eventually moving on to Oatman while enjoying what the historic Routh 66 had to offer along the way. We listened to his incredible knowledge about the mining camps, Route 66, the Black Mountains and untold amounts of information Brandon had stored in his mind. Such a remarkable man that has experienced so much of this beautiful area and was willing to share things we never would've known. Brandon is a very knowledgeable environmentalist and made this day one we will never forget. We especially enjoyed Oatman with the fabled free-roaming burros, which Brandon knew each individual burro and called them by their name. The historical hotel we dined at in Oatman at lunchtime was incredible! Clark Gable and Carol Lombard loved to hang out here and play poker, away from the publicity. You mustn't miss this place...the food was terrific, however the interior of this hotel/museum was a sight to behold! There's over a half million dollar bills attached to every available inch of space on the walls, ceilings, steps, absolutely everywhere...signed by visitors that have also left their own signed dollar bill behind! There's a story here about this tradition, concerning how it started with the early miners that begs to tell. You should call Brandon to take you there to learn the story! Call Desert Wonder Adventures, LLC if you want to enjoy a wonderful experience. Bob Walton is the owner, and he is a dream to work with in planning your tours. He has superb employees working for him that give it their all to make your tour the best experience possible. In fact, we made a return trip in early November to experience another fantastic tour with employee Eddie. We certainly enjoyed the west rim of the Grand Canyon and Joshua Tree Forest with Eddie this time! A big THANK YOU to Desert Wonder Adventures. We'll be back again...looking forward to it!
Go here, enjoy and have a great time in an old town with burros and lots of people enjoying the atmosphere. The drive from Laughlin was fun and scenic.
The Oatman Mining was so good. So many stores and donkeys roaming free, The donkeys are so cute. We got caught in a flash flood the road was washed away. The driver kept us informed on when we could leave the area and head back to Laughlin. On the way back the driver took his time. He was wonderful and so was Oatman.
Wil our tour guide and driver was very knowledgeable and was really fun and friendly. He made the trip better, stopped at interesting sites and could tell you about everything along our route.
What a delightful experience! Sarge was our guide and he was fun to be with careful driving and allowed my fear of heights change the itinerary so we had more time in Oatman. I would NOT have wanted to find Oatman by myself nor parking although our day was pretty quiet I was told. We enjoyed burro walking the streets, even got a safe picture with my husband, found fun Christmas gifts to take back home and store for the holiday. The Saloon was closed for the day post big motorcycle's annual event...probably had to go food shopping, but we found another down the street and they were love and we were musically entertained. The gun fight was fun and all for a good cause.
Bonkers. This was an off-the-beaten-path stop but 100% worth it, especially if you love animals. It’s not your typical tourist attraction (basically you just interact with the burros as you wander around the Old West town. The shops sell approved food to give them). About 20 burros hang out in town, but if you drive 5 minutes past the townsite you see even more in the hills.
We had a wonderful experience. Got picked up at our hotel on time. Brennon was our guide, super nice and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this tour.
The burros are very friendly and you can buy a bag of food for them for just one dollar. They also live out of town on the road going into Oatman and you can feed them there too. The Oatman Hotel has a very nice restaurant, ice cream shop and bar. Everyone is very very friendly and you will find a lot of really great shops in town. Plan on spending about two hours there.
This little town does not look as nice as these pictures . BIG advice to parents with children make sure that you or your kids never ever stand behind a donkey ...I just witnessed a little 8 year young girl who was walking passed a donkey from behind. The donkey kicked her so hard that SHE FLEW 3-4 FEET in the air before landing back on the ground . I heard the sound of the donkey kick her and when she hit the ground she was screaming . Her upper part of her ear was severed and to be kicked that hard in the head :( This town had NO SIGNS warning of this danger. The MOM and Dad had an accent so they were probably were from another country . They had to call an ambulance . NO SIGNS . I rate this place as disgusting for that reason. If it wasn't for our tour guide I would not have been as aware of the dangers ...
We loved this trip! I went with my sister and it turned out to be only us on the tour. Our guy Brandon was great fun and full of information about the places we visited. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone. Kingman and Oatman we great places to visit and it nice break from the Las Vegas Strip
Had a great time with a worry free, laid back time that came on time and just what we expected. The sidewinder road was our favorite part but oatman and Kingman was fun also. Do yourself a favor and get out of the casino and enjoy some desert time. Picked up and dropped us off at the door of our casino. Highly recommend
Oatman was really fun. We really liked the gun fight. We also saw alot of beautiful scenery on the drive to oatman! We also learned a lot about the area. It was a great day.
We were not sure about this when I booked. However it was absolutely amazing and hot. Our tour guide was excellent !
I have visited Las Vegas over 10 times and taken tours on most trips. As a result, it became increasingly difficult to find something “different” to see and do. However, I was instantly intrigued when I came across the Oatman Mining Village, Route 66 & Electric Vehicle Museums last fall. It definitely sounded interesting. The only issue was that I could not book a single ticket through TripAdvisor. So, I reached out to Robert Walton, Owner/Founder of Desert Wonder Adventures. He immediately reassured me that they remained open for discussion and not to be concerned. As my May 2024 trip got closer, I stayed in contact through e-mail and phone. Finally, a week before departure, I received an e-mail saying that while my chosen date was not possible, he could accommodate me on the tour one day earlier if I was interested, which I was. I was impressed that they did not forget about me before booking. On the day of the tour, our guide, Jeff, picked me up at my hotel before we headed off to Laughlin to pick up the rest of our group (a total of five guests). Jeff was an excellent tour guide, providing a wealth of knowledge about the stops on our tour and the area in general. He was also able to connect with every person on the tour, discussing their interests. As we made our way to Oatman, AZ, the stops along the route were a delightful surprise. The Electric Vehicle Museum provided a fascinating insight into the area’s early settlement and the long history of electric vehicles. A pit stop at Cool Springs allowed us to stretch our legs and take in the stunning landscape. The journey through the switchbacks was a thrilling adventure in itself. We finally arrived in Oatman, the "star" of our tour. We got to see a staged gunfight and interacted with the donkeys that freely roam the street. At the start of the tour, Jeff asked us if anyone was on schedule and had to get back to their hotel by a specific time. Since no one had any post-tour plans, it made the day less rushed and more relaxing. As a result, everyone went off to explore the town on their own. My first order of business was to head to the restaurant, where I got to enjoy their special Buffalo burger. All in all, it was a fantastic day and a great tour. If you have the time, I would highly recommend trying it out. It’s fun, even a bit educational. You won’t be disappointed.
Brilliant day loads of stuff to see with historical places and beautiful scenery and our host Jeff was fantastic very friendly and knowledgeable I would definitely recommend
Great tour. Our tour guide Jeff was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure we had an enjoyable trip. Fun trip, great scenery and friendly burros. I would definitely recommend this tour. Thank you
The whole day was just brilliant. Susan the driver was so lovely and funny and really knew her stuff. Would highly recommend A+++
The tour was really nice . Wife and I enjoy are self. Thanks for a good time. I will book another tour with this company. We had all kinds of time to look around on every stop. Saw lets of awesome stuff and the gun fight was cool to. The tour was long but worth it. they pick us up on time at are hotel.
It was an interesting drive.. hard to find a parking space, haphazard to say the least, no thoughts to pedestrian safety. There should be one designated parking space and the vehicles carrying tourists should NOT be allowed in the tiny towns only paved street. The “restaurant” a local eating place had walls covered in dollar bills ( apparently over$400,000.00 worth .. some so dried out they were falling off the walls.. no sprinklers in the establishment and the place looked like it would go up like a tinder box if someone dropped a match..hard to believe this place is t a fire risk. The other jazzers is a large area where the floor has a rise in the middle, it was painted yellow on the edges but many people did a little trip when they weren’t expecting it. On the upside we had a great waitress and good food. The entertainment was awesome too!
Our guide was fabulous! He explained everything we passed and took nus to Oatman. This is a very cute town and the burrows were roaming free. Fun to see Worth the trip! Good experience
It was a beautiful day with Beautiful scenery. We had a great tour guide who explained everything very well and took us to a Cute town Fun to see and pet the donkeys.
Mike was an excellent guide and shared so much history about the area. He was a safe and courteous driver. We enjoyed our day in Oatman with Desert Wonder Tours.
A wonderful day trip ! Mike our driver was a great guide - he gave us info along the drive on Route 66 as to the history of these mining towns and how it formed the present day scene. We definitely learned a lot ! And had beautiful scenery to see along the way. Plus, we got to feed the burros in Oatman town and see a gunslinger fight ! lol. Highly recommend Mike as a tour guide and this tour.
My sisters and I took the Oatman tour today with Mike. Mike was very knowledgeable about the landmarks and the history of Oatman. Definitely a must do day trip while staying in Laughlin!
Bob was great. Picked us up promptly and then took us on a tour of Nevada to a number of ‘ghost’ town sites. Enjoyed the day out immensely
Michael from Desert Wonders was a great tour host: showing points of interest on the way there, leaving plenty of time at the museum, took the scenic route to Oatman, introduced me to Walter the burro, and offered a very chill playlist on the way home.
Great trip to Oatman. We saw the donkeys, mined for gems, shot guns and did some antiquing. There was a staged gun fight in the street. Very nice historic town.
Our driver, Michael, was terrific! Driving Route 66 out to Kingsman and Outman, the wealth of information. . . wonderful. Can’t thank him enough for a great day!
The Oatman mining village with all the donkeys is awesome. We really enjoyed it and the donkeys are too cute. Desert Wonder Tours is an awesome company. The drivers were very nice and gave us lots of fun and interesting information. We had a great time. I can highly recommend Desert Wonder Tours for any future trips. I would book a tour with them in a heartbeat. Thank you for a wonderful day!!!
Our driver, Mike, was amazing. He was able to answer all of our questions, and coul not have been friendlier. I'd give 10 stars if I could.
Our driver/tour guide Mike was excellent. He was very knowledgeable about the sights and history. We had a great time and would recommend the tour and Mike!!!
Our tour guide Brandon was awesome. He lives in the Kingman AZ area and was very knowledgeable about the area.
Great tour with good knowledgeable host. Better in a small group - there were 4 guests in total so plenty of feedback, longer at stops and a more responsive approach. Plenty to see and do on route 66! Felt it was value for money.
The journey was long from vegas for this type of experience. Oatnan town is quaint and quite nice but lots of shops selling similar stuff.
It was a long day as we traveled from Las Vegas. The car was very comfortable and Michael the tour guide was very informative. We enjoyed the day & saw some fantastic scenery . Only disappointment was missing the gun shoot out at Oatman.
What an amazing experience away from the strip with our tour guide Mike! MIKE WAS THE BEST TOUR GUIDE! We were able to experience Oatman and what an amazing town it is. The first stop of the tour was to visit Kingsman Visitor center, the heart of route 66. Got to see some really cool electric cars, experience history and the route 66 town feel. Plenty of shopping experiences here as well. At Oatman we traveled back to an old mining village, saw a real gun fight, interacted with wild burrows walking around, and had a great pulled pork sandwich at a local restaurant. My husband and I even had a "mining for gems " experience and were able to make a necklace from the gems we found! Mike made sure to give us plenty of time, was super interactive and friendly and we can't thank him enough for an amazing tour! -Liz and Chris
I visited Las Vegas in October 2023 but wanted to get out of the city and see some of the surrounding areas. There were surprisingly few tours venturing any further than the Grand Canyon but this tour to Oatman via Scene Route 66 looked interesting. Having looked at the itinerary, I expected a few quick stops at gift shops followed by a visit to the tourist trap of Oatman. I couldn't have been more wrong. Our tour guide, Mike, picked us up from our hotel on time at 8am in a comfortable seven seater van before picking up one other passenger from another nearby hotel. As such, it felt like a nice intimate, almost private, tour. Mike explained to us that he lives in Kingman, which was our first real stop except for a quick restroom break at a large gas station. For each tour, Mike drives nearly two hours from Kingman, Arizona to collect passengers in Las Vegas, then back to Kingman for the tour, through Oatman then back to Las Vegas before he returns home to Kingman. The mileage alone makes this tour excellent value for money! The first stop is the Route 66 museum in Kingman, which feels like somebody's personal project. That is to say it has a real authenticity and we spent about half an hour exploring the various exhibits which detail how Route 66 and the railroad brought people and jobs to this small corner of Arizona. An unexpected highlight was the electric vehicle room which had dozens of weird and wonderful electric vehicles from the past fifty years. Yes, they've been around that long. Nevada and this part of Arizona are known for their rich minerals, mined from the mountains. Our second stop was one of the highlights of our entire trip. We pulled off a long desert road next to a trailer, surrounded by tables exhibiting various rocks. The owner of the trailer, Thomas, is exactly the kind of character you hope to meet on these tours. He was proud to show off his collection of various rocks and minerals, which he mines himself in the nearby hills. A real character, it is always a fantastic experience to hear someone speak with a true passion for what they do. Thomas is a real down-to-earth guy who seems to just enjoy showing his finds. Next we drove through, what I believe are, the Black Hills. The views are spectacular, especially if you're on the right side of the vehicle. Mike navigated us expertly up the winding switch-backs as we rose above the desert. Throughout the journey Mike pointed out some of the sights and gave us a little bit of the history of the area, which is genuinely interesting. Oatman, a former mining town, sits within these hills. From the research I'd done prior to the trip, I expected a tourist trap full of expensive gift shops. The promise of a 'cowboy gun fight' on the street was exactly the kind of cheese I don't usually enjoy. I prefer authenticity, even if it means there's less to see and do. Fortunately, I was wrong. Every store in Oatman, including the saloon and restaurant, is a little bit touristy but it took no effort at all to scratch below the surface and get a feel for what the town used to be. The cowboy gun fight was actually a lot of fun and very well enacted by the guys involved. I highly recommend a visit to the Dakota Leather & Gift shop. On the face of it, it's just another gift shop but inside, it's a treasure trove of weird and wonderful artefacts. Genuine old-west bottle openers once used in a saloon, decades ago. Old rotary, bakelite telephones. It is as much a museum as it is a gift shop, except everything is for sale - at reasonable prices too. If you're tired of fridge magnets, keyring and t-shirts, this is the place for you. No visit to a an old-west town is complete without a visit to the local saloon. Prices were, again, surprisingly reasonable. $4 for a pint of draught Budweiser. The same was true of the restaurant across the road. While the town was teeming with tourists, we had a fantastic time here with our only disappointment being that we couldn't stay longer. After Oatman, Mike drove us back to Las Vegas via a different route, passing the town of gambling town Laughlin. The journey back was quiet and comfortable and we were returned to our hotel around 5pm before Mike presumably made his own journey back to Kingman, nearly two hours away. As I said, we had quite low expectations for this tour but figured that we would at least get to see some of the landscape outside Las Vegas. In reality, we had an amazing time. The tour itinerary doesn't do justice to how great a day you'll have. If you have a spare day in Vegas and want to get out of the city, there is no better tour to do.
