Chase was a wonderful guide for my hike to Cedar Ridge on the South Kaibob Trail. I had wanted to hike into the Grand Canyon a bit, but I was nervous to do it alone, Chase made me feel so at ease and was so encouraging and patient! He had hiking poles for me and even carried my raincoat and camera in his backpack, so nice! He brought a delicious lunch and tons of snacks for our break at Cedar Ridge and tons of water and electrolytes , which were a game changer, they got me back up the trail! The scenery was absolutely amazing and gorgeous, it was just an awesome experience!

The Grand Canyon is spectacular, one of the wonders of the world. But our hike was made so much better by the expert guiding, from Chris, provided by The Desert Hiking company. We learned so much from Chris, about the history of the park, the people who lived there, and still do, as well as the geology which has created this incredible place. Chris also gave us very good advice on our health, as hiking in the Canyon in heat can be difficult. He was also very good company, Absolutely top service, top hike, great company to book a tour with. And the company was also very understanding when we had to change our plans near to the date of our tour. Would recommend them without reservation.
Chris is the best tour guide, heck yeah!!! He’s very knowledgeable and kept us motivated during the hike. He made sure we were safe and doing okay. Chris also provided lunch and snacks and got us back safely.
I reached out to the Desert Hiking Company to arrange for a hiking guide to accompany me on my hike into the Grand Canyon and help me prepare for longer, more strenuous hikes. From my very first interaction with the company, the customer service and communication were exceptional. Chase, the guide assigned to our group, made sure that all of my questions and concerns were addressed. He was a consummate professional who made the hike an incredible adventure by sharing his knowledge, experience, and stories about the Canyon. It has been a long time since I can remember paying for an adventure tour that exceeded all of my expectations. What I appreciated most about Chase was his experience with strenuous hikes, his genuine concern for our safety, and the thoughtfulness he put into every detail of the experience. He even prepared a delicious lunch for us taking into consideration our dietary restrictions. Most of all, I appreciated his patience and encouragement when I struggled during the hike back up to the trailhead. If you're planning a hiking adventure in the Grand Canyon or anywhere else in Arizona, I strongly recommend giving the folks at the Desert Hiking Company a call. Their professionalism, expertise, and commitment to creating a great experience truly stood out. Thank you, Chase, for making my Grand Canyon adventure an unforgettable one. Until next time!
Heck yeah, I recommend Desert Hiking Co. & our guide Chris! He was knowledgeable, super-patient and an all-round good guy. And lunch was delicious! Thank you, Chris!
Heck yeah we absolutely loved our guide Chris, booked with The Desert Hiking Company! He regaled us with funny stories of his own experiences hiking and being out in nature, and took care to make sure everyone had an experience well-suited to their abilities. He explained the geologic history of the Grand Canyon and pointed out different types of rocks and plants along the route. Chris also prepared a delicious lunch for us at Cedar Ridge, which was much appreciated after the challenging hike. We will definitely request Chris when we return to Arizona!
This experience is far better than standing on the rim, I would recommend it to anyone who is able to walk the incline.
Chris was terrific. He was very, very knowledgeable about the canyon's history, geology, flora and fauna. He's the real deal, and he took great care to make sure we were safe and enjoyed ourselves. I would recommend him as a guide for any age or skill level hiker.
Our guide, Chris, was a great fit for our group. The communication and setting expectations for the hike was well done and we were well prepared for our day. Chris is a true outdoorsman with incredible knowledge of the Grand Canyon, it’s history, and all the magic it provides to its lucky visitors-like us! He made us feel welcome and safe. The hike was moderately challenging and our group’s abilities varied. Chris managed the day for us with fun, ease and a great energy. I would highly recommend Chris and his team. They are stewards of this majestic experience, resourceful and provided us with an exceptional experience.
Amazing day with our Guide Chris. Excellent communication prior to our meeting spot had us super prepared and ready for a great hike. We’re in our mid sixties, of varying physical abilities and the day was perfect. Chris was welcoming, competent, filled with Grand Canyon history, a true outdoorsman, professional, easy-going and a perfect fit for our group. The hike was moderately challenging, gorgeous, and highly enjoyable. The views from the trail were spectacular, our lunch spot and break was ideal. I highly recommend planning a trip with Chris and his team. He shared a love and stewardship for the park and its majesty that will stay with us for a long while.
We had private sunset guided hiking tour with our guide Chris. This was our first experience in the Grand Canyon and it was far beyond expectation. First, Chris called me far in advance to prepare us for the sunset tour by providing useful information meet up location and also stated he would provide picnic meal and asked about dietary restrictions. At meetup Chris was prepared and started the tour off instantly by providing walking sticks and guidance on using them. He provided his plan for us regarding the duration, distance and difficulty level and ensured we had a day in how to structure the tour. Throughout the tour Chris educated us on geology, plantlife, wildlife and history of the Grand Canyon. The hike was exactly matched to our skill level and desires and we were extremely satisfied with his guidance. Chris also prepared a very delicious picnic meal that my wife and I enjoyed with him at the halfway point of our hike. Most importantly we got to know Chris and his personal history and his connection to the Grand Canyon and to nature in general. We found Chris to be passionate about the Grand Canyon and could see he had a deep personal connection to it. During the hike Chris also checked in with hikers passing by who looked tired and offered them water and snacks and remained vigilante for anyone in need. We appreciated him taking his responsibility to the park seriously and witnessing his compassion for other hikers only enhanced our experience. There's really not enough I could say about the experience and our guide. I would highly recommend these guys. I would absolutely recommend Chris. Not only will you have a great guide you will also get a chance to meet a great compassionate person and we absolutely enjoyed spending almost 5 hrs walking and talking with him.
My partner and I did our first hike on South Kaibab trail to Skeleton Point. Our guide Chris was amazing. Chris is so knowledgeable and patient. We couldn’t have asked for a better person to guide of on the trail.
Lewis was an exceptional guide on our first ever hike into the canyon! His knowledge of the trail and canyon were impressive. He started us out the Backcountry office to ride the bus to South Kaibab trailhead where we began our hike down from the rim to The Tipoff. After a short break we headed down Tonto East for lunch about a mile outside of Indian Garden. There he had quite the spread of fresh food to fuel our bodies for the ascend up Bright Angel. Not sure how many times we thanked him for taking us on this hike, but one more time won’t hurt… THANK YOU LEWIS! There were times I questioned my abilities, he was right there behind me reminding me I could. The 15-mile hike was nothing shy of challenging, pushing my husband and I past any limits we had achieved before. While we have hiked mountains up to a 5800’ elevation gain, we realized for those, we did the hard part first. Coming out of the canyon is nothing like hiking up a mountain. Thankful for the ability to complete such a hike. Cannot wait to return to complete the Rim 2 River and then Tim 2 Rim. Tip: Let the guide pack heavy.. While our packs were not too heavy, Lewis was truly ready fir any emergency we could have possibly had! Exceptional guide!!
Chris was an excellent guide. He contacted me in advance to ensure all was organized for the trip, including considerations for the weather, food, snacks, and hydration. It was a fabulous experience and I would highly recommend.
My tour guide was Chris, he was well-prepared with hiking poles, backpack, water, snacks, and a fabulous lunch. The weather was predicted to be windy so he chose a bit more isolated path to take, which worked out well. He contacted me the evening prior to the hike to confirm details for the hike. There were no surprises, I would highly recommend!
If you like to hike and be challenged, this is a great hike for you! My tour guide was amazing and share a lot of knowledge about the trail and historical facts about the canyon. Chase was an amazing guide and made the experience memorable. The views were breathtaking and so worth the effort.
Our guide Matt was very knowledgeable and fun to be with. Grand Canyon is Amazing. Our hike was 6 hours long, but we feel the $540.00 fee for 2 people is a bit excessive for what we did. The lunch was great but it was a simple sandwich. We gave it a 3 star just because of the excessive fee. Matt was Great!!!!
Our guide Lewis was very knowledgeable about the local area and Grand Canyon itself. We were offered snacks, water poles and rucksacks and discussed what hike we would like to do; Lewis worked with us to suggest some options and we agreed a plan. We set off and kept to an agreeable pace, half way we stopped for a nice homemade picnic and then headed back up the trail and saw the sunset in the canyon which was fantastic.
I had a great time. Louis was a phenomenal tour guide and i didn't feel like he was just "at work" or only doing his job, you know? I felt like we were hiking together. It was the favorite part of my trip to the canyon, I would recommend it to anyone considering a tour through it as well.
Our Grand Canyon hike was an amazing experience that left us with a sense of awe and gratitude, creating memories that'll last a lifetime. As we descended into the canyon, our guide, Chris, pointed out geological formations, explained the history behind the layered rocks, and shared stories of the many hikes he had made through the canyon. One of the highlights was learning how to use basic navigation skills with the landscape as our guide. We also learned about a local plant found along the trail called Mormon tea. As we chewed on the plant, Chris explained its anti-inflammatory properties and its role in traditional remedies. These are just a couple of examples that transformed the hike into an educational adventure. The hike back up the trail proved challenging for my wife, especially as dusk approached. Chris’s patience and genuine concern stood out during this time, as he encouraged her every step of the way and adjusted our pace. This was very much appreciated by both of us. Afterwards, we still had the meal that was planned for the trip, even though it was pitch dark and the park was closed by then. Reflecting on our day, we felt not only inspired by the grandeur of the canyon but deeply touched by Chris’s guidance, kindness, and companionship. The hike itself left us with a renewed appreciation for nature. If you’re visiting the Grand Canyon, we highly recommend this excursion. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after you leave the trail.
Chris was an ‘awesome:awesome’ who thought of everything and anticipated our needs at every step. A wonderful part of the hike was our lunch complete with checkered tablecloth and great host. We would highly recommend this trip Sonia and Nicky
We did the sunset hike on South Kaibab trail to Cedar Ridge with Chase and it was an excellent experience. The hike was beautiful and Chase was an amazing guide. He did a great job coordinating logistics, even bringing dinner down for us to enjoy. His passion for the Canyon came through during our hike and he was full of info on the history/geology of the area. We couldn’t have been happier with the experience!
My husband and I had a wonderful hike on 9/27/25 with Chris. I had some concerns about thunder storms forecast the day before the hike. He was responsive and called me back to discuss and further plan our trip. We ended up doing the Bright Angel trail instead of the original plan as it was near where we were staying at Thunderbird Lodge. He suggested to start early, at 6 am to avoid the afternoon showers. The day of hike he brought us the backbacks ,poles and yummy snacks to the trailhead. Very considerate. Throughout, Chris was a knowledgeable and entertaining guide. We saw fossils and petroglyphs we would have missed otherwise. We felt very safe with his guidance. We hiked approx 4.5 miles down the canyon to the Havasupai Gardens where Chris made us great wraps for lunch. The hike back up out of the canyon was challenging with 3300 ft of elevation. My husband and I are very fit, but Chris checked with us frequently to make sure we tolerated the climbing. We never felt rushed or uncomfortable. We feel like we experienced much more during the hike than we would have without a guide. Highly recommend this company!
Chris was, without exception, the best guide we have ever had. He was passionate about the Canyon and extremely knowledgeable about its history, cultures, and organic life. He was patient and respectful of our needs and made sure that the experience was fun for us. Also, he made us a delicious late lunch on the trail. We will certainly seek him out for any future adventures in the area.
Doing the hike with Chris as a guide was cool. The wealth of additional information about the area and the people made the hike entertaining. A tour with Chris is highly recommended!
To Fellow Hikers, Very professional company with a responsive owner. We had a hiccup on our end with our scheduling company and the good folks at The Dessert Hiking Company fixed everything. I knew the hike would be challenging and I had a healthy respect for the canyon before entering, which is why I decided our first hike should be done with a guide. We had a family of 5 including 3 teenagers. Our guide was Chris. He was great at communicating and very experienced at working with hikers of all skill levels. Our hike ended up being a little over 4 miles to Cedar Ridge and back. Chris provided plenty of education and entertainment throughout the hike. We made it down to Cedar Ridge not before stopping at Ooh Ah point for a picture. At Cedar Ridge, Chris made us a great lunch of wraps that he had previously discussed with us before the hike to make sure there were no issues. Then, after some fun with wild life(squirrels and a couple of Ravens), we started the ascent. This is where Chris earned our greatest respect because he was very patient and stopped many times for us so we could enjoy the hike back to the top. He shared some pro-tip hiking techniques and some personal stories that helped us get through the most challenging sections of the climb. We highly recommend Chris and The Dessert Hiking Company. David
Chris was a fantastic Grand Canyon tour guide. He was punctual and had everything ready to go right on time. Throughout the tour, he shared fascinating insights into the canyon’s geology, botany, and history, showing a deep knowledge and love for the area. His down-to-earth personality made the experience feel relaxed and engaging, and he kept the group moving at a perfect pace—not too fast, not too slow. Chris was also incredibly hospitable, making everyone feel welcome and cared for. Most of all, he was just genuinely nice—kind, approachable, and clearly passionate about what he does. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide.
This was an incredible experience for my husband and I. Chris was our guide and he tailored the hike, food, and pace to us specifically. He was so knowledgeable, we truly learned so much from him on this trip. I cannot say enough how worth while it was to have a guide for our first Grand Canyon hike. We will definitely be back! Thank you for an amazing experience.
This year’s family vacation took us to the Grand Canyon, and we knew we wanted to do more than just snap a quick photo. A hike was at the top of our list, but we weren’t about to go in unprepared. That’s where The Desert Hiking Company and our guide, Chase, came in! We booked the South Kaibab Sunset Hike, and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience; challenging yet incredibly rewarding. Chase made sure we were well-prepared, from safety tips to ensuring we had the right gear and plenty of snacks, water, and a full dinner. As we made our way down, he shared fascinating facts about the canyon’s wildlife, fossils, and rock formations. It wasn’t an easy hike, but with Chase’s encouragement, amazing personality, and thorough preparation, we powered through. This hike was easily the highlight of our trip, and it’s something we’ll never forget. If you’re on the fence, consider this your sign to book it! Thank you, Chase!
The views on this 3 mile hike are breathtaking. Chase was so knowledgeable and was prepared for anything and everything that could happen. We could not have had a better guide! 100% recommend this hike and Chase!
Our Southwest National Park trip ended with an amazing guided hike with Chase from Desert Hiking. We met up at 6am and headed to the South Kaibab Trail. Chase kept us moving at a pace that was appropriate for the family, including one member who is scared of heights. We got lots of amazing photos and panoramic views of the canyon. Chase was extremely knowledgeable about geology, the canyon, hiking and the Southwest. At the 1.5 mile point (Canyon Ridge), Chase laid out an amazing brunch spread which we enjoyed before heading back up the trail. On the way back, we stopped and rested as needed but got back up at a great pace. The whole family agreed that this was the highlight of our trip! Thanks for the memories!
My family of four (two fit adults, kids ages 13 and 9) booked a hike with The Desert Hiking Co at the Grand Canyon. We are good walkers and hikers on our own but when in a new place we love going with a guide who can share more of the local history with us and help us see what is not necessarily available to the first-time visitor. Louis was our guide and did not disappoint! He is a deep well of knowledge about all things Grand Canyon including the history and geology of it, as well as the local flora and fauna. He set a perfect pace for our family's needs and... carried a great picnic! We are vegan and he packed really delicious soup and lots of snacks. That picnic was one of my son's highlights of the trip! Thanks so much for a great sunset hike and we look forward to doing it again with you next time we come to the Southwest!
We had an incredible experience hiking with our guide, Josh! We explored the South Kaibab and Hermit Trail and couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Josh’s deep knowledge and passion for the Grand Canyon—its geology, plants, and wildlife—truly enriched our trip. He set clear expectations, offered great recommendations, and maintained a positive, enthusiastic attitude throughout. He’s an experienced guide who genuinely cares about making the experience memorable and sharing the interesting history of GC with visitors. Prior to the trip, we were communicating with Louis and he was excellent and responsive too!
Out of this world experience! Our tour guide Louis was the best tour guide we have ever had! He knew everything about the Grand Canyon and he made the tour so fun and interesting. The tour didn’t feel rushed- we went at our own pace. Lunch was also terrific with the most amazing view! Would highly recommend this tour! We would love to book another tour with Louis in future!
Wonderful adventure hiking in the Grand Canyon. Kudos to Josh our Tour Guide. Hiked close to five miles.
Looking for adventure and a getaway? Look no further! Our family (4 total - including a 13 year old, and a 9 year old) brought nothing but ourselves & some water. The rest was all provided by The Desert Hiking Company (packs, snacks, trekking poles). I’d highly recommend bringing a reusable water jug or hydration bladder. Our guide, Louis, is top notch. Knowledgeable, friendly, and incredibly insightful. The trek itself was nothing but stunning. The views, the walk, the conversation & learning, and the delicious food brought to you by your guide are absolutely incredible! The trek back up the canyon can provide a challenge - yet with the thoughtful and perfectly timed pauses along the way back up you feel motivated to conquer it all. The only warning to heed to those coming for the first time: YOU WILL GET ADDICTED. Already in the process of planning the next trip at the time of this writing.
Could not be happier that we chose Desert Hiking Company to experience the Grand Canyon. My sister and I planned the trip for our mother’s 70th birthday. Louie was so accommodating, patient, and knowledgeable. He modified the pace as needed for her but didn’t make her feel like she was holding everyone up. His love for guiding and educating others on his passion is evident. The experience was smooth and well thought out. He even had warm chili and tea for us to enjoy while we rested at a scenic viewpoint! I highly recommend using Desert Hiking Company. I look forward to using them again in the future!
Chase was a wonderful guide and had so much knowledge to share! We definitely will be back for another trip another time!
I went into this hike mourning the loss of my own physical health and limitations due to a progressive condition, a mother in hospice care and being completely drained and exhausted from work. Our Guide showed up and told us to slow down, it's not about getting from point A to point B, and to make it a spiritual experience. If there was a person that I truly needed in that moment in time, it was our Guide, Chase. We learned so much about the Grand Canyon, more than I could have ever imagined. If you are not using a Guide, you are missing out on so much!! The history, the education, and fun facts. At no point in time did I feel rushed. I got down the path safely and back up again. I got to enjoy peaceful moments and eat lunch in one of the most beautiful spots in the world. I'm glad that I have this memory. It was perfect. If I have the opportunity, I would contact this company to assist in completing R2R. Fingers crossed. Only downside, Chase forgot the hot sauce for lunch.
Louis was a fabulous tour guide. His knowledge of the canyon was incredible and he was so prepared. What was most enjoyable was the way he interacted with my kids. He spoke to them at eye level and taught them so much. He made it fun and really centered it around them. When the kids have fun then the parents are able to enjoy themselves. 100% recommend desert hiking. Anyone that travels to the Grand Canyon, I always give them their information. I truly believe our experience was far more enjoyable than if we had done it alone because of them. Thank you desert hiking!
We had an amazing experience hiking with Louis! He shared so many inspiring stories and interesting facts about the canyons history. The hike was perfectly planned for us to watch the sunset over the canyon, which made for an unforgettable experience. 10/10 recommend!
