We stayed at Thunderbird Lodge (fantastic!!), which is immediately across from the park where we met our tour guide, Jason. Jason was absolutely wonderful! Not only did he give us a great tour, he told us so much about the history of the area. He also educated us about tribal culture, the people living down in the canyon including family members. We had booked a 4 hour private tour for my wife and I and we were in a 4 wheel drive jeep.He told us about the various dwelling built into the canyon walls and explained the pictographs on the walls. Jason stopped the vehicle so that we could see the wild horses drinking in the river. We live in Arizona but had never traveled to this part of the state. I would encourage everyone to take this tour because of the quality of the experience. Enjoy!!!

Reggie, our guide, picked us up at our hotel exactly on time. He is a walking encyclopedia on history, geology, geography, and cultural background of the area. He has a love for this place and its people and it shows! He drove us carefully in his Jeep, patiently stopping whenever we wanted to take photos ( so many photos!) and kept us moving to cover as many must-sees as we could in the short 4 hours. He even gave us a flute serenade, echoing off the canyon walls- beautiful! We could not imagine a better experience in such a magical place! To our Navajo professor, Reggie, Ahéhee’
The company was very easy to work with. We needed to make adjustments to our reservations that were made with no problems. Our guide Misty was very personable and knowledgeable. Not only did she share her knowledge of the canyon, but also shared her personal experiences growing up in the canyon and her Navajo heritage. I highly recommend this tour company. I learned so much and gained many unexpected and valuable insights. My experience far exceeded my expectations.
Our tour guide had great knowledge of the Canyon and other historical events. With the crazy recent rainy weather that was experienced, Celina did a great job driving us around to see the sights. I would've been lost driving around there.
Leone and Reginald gave our group a wonderful tour. We are a cultural tour traveling around northern Arizona learning about Pueblo and Dinè culture and they were really terrific guides. Everyone loved the tour and one person even said it was one of the best days of her life. Reginald and Leone were informative, helpful, funny, kind, and very professional.
We were running late with our grandsons, but the tour company and our wonderful guide LaBerta were very patient. LaBerta did a great job guiding us through Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto, driving on the sandy floors of the canyons in a 4WD Jeep. She spent much of her childhood in the Canyon, and her family still owns land there. She had great stories to tell of her and her extended family's experiences, plus the overall history and culture of the area and the Navajo Nation. LaBerta was very well prepared, she had taken a number of high resolution photos, so even when some of the pictographs were far away, we could see them clearly on her iPhone and get an excellent explanation by LaBerta. We saw a range of ancient ruins including cliff-dwellings, which were amazing. And the canyons are so beautiful! Bring some water and snacks, those don't come with the tour. Highly recommended!
Jason Begay was our great tour guide! Funny, knowledgeable, and an amazing driver through flooded muddy arroyos! We had a wonderful time listening to his stories of his ancestors and his own past growing up in the canyon. We were so blessed to see the canyon while it was raining because we saw the waterfalls coming over the canyon walls everywhere.
Very thorough and complete tour. Numerous opportunities for photography. Cannot see the canyon by driving the rim road. You have to get down in the canyon. Guide very knowledgeable and personable. Vehicle was very clean. Drive can be an experience if you never drove in the west. Can hot bring plenty of water.
The service was excellent and highly recommend Canyon De Chelly Tours. Business or not.
What an amazing morning. The canyon is just stunning: the pictographs, petroglyphs and ruins were fabulous, but the highlight of the entire morning was listening to our guide recount her childhood memories of growing up in and around the canyon. She knew this place inside and out! We loved her stories passed down through multiple generations of family/ clan living in canyon. Irene, thank you for a truly memorable experience. I wish I could relive it all over again. Amazing morning with an incredible guide!
Our guide, Richard, was very knowledgeable about the canyon and Navajo culture and history. He showed us spots we never could have found by ourselves, even if allowed to go without him. It was a great day.
We had a full day walking and driving through the Canyons with Richard, our guide- We felt honored to be with him and learned so much of past and present Navajo culture. Our vehicle was very comfortable which was important to us! We can not recommend this company enough!
This tour was everything we hoped it would be, and more. We felt lucky to have gotten Reggie, our guide, who was easy to be with; extremely well-informed about Navajo history, practices, beliefs, and cosmology and the canyon's flora; took the trouble to point out and explain petroglyphs because he knew we were interested in them; and even played a Native flute for us. I'd happily recommend Canyon de Chelly Tours to anyone interested in doing more than just looking down into the canyon from the overlooks on the rim drive.
Very enjoyable. Knowledgeable guide.
Irene provided us with so much history of the area. It was wonderful to see the canyon through her eyes.
Great tour through the canyon with our guide,Perry! Beautiful scenery, very informative descriptions of the history and the archeological sites in the area. Enjoyed being in an enclosed jeep on the very sandy, bumpy road. Highly recommend this company.
Jason was our guide. He spent part of his childhood in the canyon and had all sorts of stories about the area and growing up there. What a great story teller! We could tell he loves this area! We had no idea the area was so large and how many ancient sites there were!
The guide was fantastic. She is Dine and mixed her own story with the story of the canyon and of the Navajo and Hopi people. We had a window into something very special. Very highly recommended!
Perry was great. He was very knowledgeable and shared a lot of stories.
Such a great tour. Celia did an amazing job sharing stories of her life experiences and history of the land. Tour was very heartfelt and informative.
Misty was an excellent guide for our 4-hr tour of this beautiful, historic canyon. She was very knowledgeable and friendly, and her own clan (family) history gave us so much insight into the close Navajo family connections. The tour was very interesting on both an historic and personal level. She arrived right on time, vehicle was clean, and we had a beautiful day to see everything. Even if you were allowed to go on your own, it's so much better with a personal, well-informed guide!
Seeing up close and hearing about the canyon history from a native guide makes the cost well worth the price. We took this private 4 hour tour and saw rock art, ruins and wildlife you cannot see from the rim overlooks. Check the tour prices from different operators and what they include, be aware that there is a separate $15 per person tribal entry fee to enter the canyon. Four hours is about the right amount of time but be aware you do not get all the way to Spider Rock or Massacre Cave so check them out from the rim overlooks. Our guide Richard was very knowledgeable about all aspects of the canyon and took time to show and talk about. Be aware that trails are rough and dusty as the entire floor of the canyon is sand with many wash and water crossings. Our vehicle could have had a better suspension and been cleaner inside so dress and expect accordingly. We give it 4 stars instead of 5 only because of the vehicle otherwise a 5.
My girlfriend and I enjoyed our 4-hour jeep tour with Richard as our tour guide. He provided many layers of history and stories that brought the canyon walls to life for us. Days later we are still talking with friends and family about our time in the canyon. Truly what a gift to learn about the Navajo and Anasazi people. We highly recommend this tour!
Our guide, Reginald met us at the parking lot right on time and immediately whisked the two of us off to the canyon while he began sharing his in-depth knowledge of the sites we saw. Two aspects made this adventure unique--first and foremost was Reginald and secondly, the canyon pictographs and ruins. Reginald's warm personality; insightful Navajo stories and interpretations of Navajo history; and flute playing immersed us into the culture. The canyon itself is stunning--a mix of natural beauty with significant historical ruins and pictographs. There's so much to see that we'd like to come back and spend more time here. This tour was top of the list on our trip to Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley, Valley of Fire, Bears Ear, Capitol Reef, and Grand Staircase. Definitely go a little out of your way to fit this in.
My wife and I had a mesmerizing tour of Canyon de Chelly with Jason, who is personable and extremely knowledgeable as to physical and historical aspects of the canyon having spent years living and working in it. The landscapes are truly magnificent and the historic relics of living spaces built into caves and cliff ledges along with prolific and fascinating petroglyph and pictorgraph art were truly beautiful. Jason shared experiences and anecdotes that greatly enriched our understanding of Navajo culture and the history of these people in this area over centuries. He was a terrific guide and an excellent driver in the rough and exciting roadless conditions of the canyon floor. We highly recommend Canyon De Chelly Tours LLC.
We enjoyed an amazing day in the Canyon. Our guide, Francine, was the highlight of the trip. She was very knowledgeable about the the history, both ancient and recent. She made our day a special memory.
What an amazing experience we had. Our guide, Reggie Regg is awesome. His knowledge of the canyon, his life experiences of growing up between the canyon walls added to tour. He showed up on time, the jeep was clean and well kept. Reggie brought with him two flutes which he played in different locations being the canyon to life with his music. We highly recommend Canyon Del Chelly Tours LLC for your adventure. Ask for Reggie Regg to top off your tour.
Since the canyon was closed due to gov’t shutdown we were more than thrilled to book a last minute tour w/this co. Misty was wonderful and as a native american was totally knowledgeable about the canyon. Beautiful tour across the canyon floor including ruins which were awesome! Definitely a highlight of our trip to Arizona & would highly recommend.
Our guide Reginald made our trip a special and fascinating experience. He was raised in the area, spoke Diné Bizaad, and had a deep knowledge of Diné culture and the canyon. We had signed up for a 4 hour combo tour, but he advised us that the ground was muddy with multiple water crossings due to recent rains, and that we could see more if we mostly rode in the jeep. He was right! We saw so much that the time flew by and we were left wanting to come back for a longer tour. We left with a better understanding of the history, culture, and beauty of the canyon and its people, and a desire to learn more. Thank you Reginald!
Reggie gave my husband and I a great canyon tour. Reggie was super interesting and knowledgeable about both past and current Native American culture. Good native flute player too! Excellent tour. Thanks!
What a wonderful experience. He shared his knowledge about everything we saw and we learned so much about Dine’ culture
Our tour was led by Delvannia and she was amazing. She listened and understood what we were looking for and designed the tour around our interests and conversations. The entire time was informative and visually stunning. We would highly recommend this to others and fully intend to be back for another tour in the fall. Thank you very much for making this bucket list item fabulous and wonderful.
My husband and I really enjoyed our tour of Canyon de Chelly with our guide, Misty Star. She was so knowledgeable about the Canyon and also about the Diné people and their customs. We highly recommend this tour!
We chose Canyon de Chelly tours because of the 5 star TripAdvisor reviews and because the company has been in business for 30+ years. We're glad we did. Canyon de Chelly Tours was willing to personalize our tour. When we booked, we were asked about our interests. We chose history, archaeology and geology, and our guide, Delvonnia, addressed all of those topics and more. She regaled us with stories from her family and her people, and she answered our many questions. She's an amazing guide who has an extensive knowledge of the region, and we highly recommend her. We initially booked the combo tour so we could hike and still see many sights. We selected an open jeep with roll bars so we had the best views. That meant no A/C, but good breezes, perfect choice. But the day before we left for Chinle, our daughter fractured her ankle, so we called Delvonnia and asked if she could adjust the tour. No problem, she said. We did mostly driving but got out at every stop for a short walk (albeit on crutches for our daughter). It all worked perfectly. Canyon de Chelly Tours can pick up at local hotels (but not at the Thunderbird Lodge -- for that one, there's a pickup spot nearby). We stayed at the Holiday Inn, so we were picked up and dropped off there, very key with one person with a bad ankle! The tours are not cheap but are well worth the price. Tips are much appreciated.
Del was our tour guide and she was excellent! She wove personal history with historical facts in an engaging way. She was able to answer all our questions. We saw everything we wanted to see in the canyon. Great storyteller with a personable manner. Highly recommend.
Four of us took the 4 hour private tour in a Hummer. Irene was our tour guide. She was a remarkable woman with vast knowledge of the Canyon and her culture. She willingly shared stories about her life and family, as well as the history of the Dine peoples. The tour was filled with insight, wisdom and humor, and we all wished we could go again the next day!
Richard was a great guide. Very informative about the Canyon, Native culture and history. We made many stops for petroglyphs and ruins. We were impressed with Richard.
Irene was an excellent tour guide. She is knowledgeable about Navajo and Canyon history and is always reading and studying to learn more. She told us stories of sheep herding in the canyon as a young girl. She introduced us to friends and family who sell jewelry along the tour route. We didn't want our day to end.
I wanted to share some feedback on my recent tour experience. Our guide, Irene, was absolutely wonderful. She was so kind and generous with her time, and it was fascinating to hear her personal stories about the canyon and the Navajo people, drawing from her decades of experience leading tours. I was also very impressed with the professionalism of the company owner. She proactively reached out both the day before and on the day of the tour to ensure our meeting arrangements went smoothly. For anyone considering this private tour, I highly recommend a visit to the Canyon de Chelly visitor center beforehand. They have a very informative 23-minute video about the Navajo Nation's history, which really enhances the experience of being on the canyon floor during the private tour.
Our tour guide Reginald was extremely knowledgeable as well as a careful 4x4 driver. He drove my wife and I all the way to close up view of White House and then across the canyon to Antelope House. He is very knowledgeable about native Indian culture and life in the canyon. He also demonstrated how Native hunters used a primitive stick bow. Reginald also played his native flute which echoed through the canyon. Overall the combo tour with Reginald was outstanding. Thanks.
The guide, Richard, was fantastic. He started by finding out what we were interested in. He took us to see ruins and natural features in both Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto. We had plenty of opportunities to take photographs, ask questions and converse. Richard has lots of great stories to tell as well. Photos hopefully uploaded soon.
Our private trip through the canyon with our guide Richard T. was amazing. His knowledge of the area and native stories added more color to the fabulous views. He made you feel part of the native culture.
If I could give our tour 6 stars I would. Reginald was our guide. He is well informed about the history, geography, plants, animals, etc. of the Canyon and Navajo Nation. He is the only guide who includes playing the flute on the tour, accompanied by the echos. The 4 hours went far too fast. I cannot recommend him enough.
