About Activity
Rio Celeste lies on the edge of Tenorio Volcano National Park, known for its vivid turquoise river, lush rainforest, and abundant wildlife—perfect for nature lovers and hikers. The journey takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes along the scenic Maleku Route, passing pineapple and yucca fields en route to the park.
The moderately challenging 5.5 km hike through tropical forest takes about 3 hours round-trip and includes a descent of 250 steps to a stunning waterfall. Along the trail, you’ll also visit the Tenorio Volcano lookout (weather permitting), a serene azure lagoon, bubbling Borbollones hot springs, and the Teñideros—the magical confluence that gives Rio Celeste its signature blue hue. According to legend, this is where God washed his brush after painting the sky.
After the hike, enjoy a traditional Costa Rican lunch before heading back. Transportation in air-conditioned tourist vehicles with a bilingual guide is included from Arenal Zone 1 hotels; an additional transfer fee of $140 per minivan (1–7 passengers) applies for pickups from Zone 2.
