Helena our guide was absolutely terrific guiding us through the history and highlights of Amsterdam and the Red Light District. Her passion and knowledge was astoundin and contagious , as was her humour and sense of fun. Helena made us feel so welcome and a 2 hour tour turned into 3 . She was always mindful of our wishes, checking if we had particular things we wanted to see or do. She also emailed us extra places to see and do whilst in Amsterdam. Sebastian was a wealth of knowledge and was enthusiastic about his love for his country. He went out of his way to meet us at a different location due to time issues and while there wasn’t a lot to see in the red light district due to curfew, we were able to learn a lot about the area. I would recommend to really get information about the entire area.

This was a very unique tour! Our guide, see picture below, was knowledgeable, funny and courteous. He wasn’t deterred by the weather (it was raining cats and dogs) and even offered to hold my daughters backpack. The weather was a mess but our guide balanced the experience. I highly recommend this tour!

This was not a good tour. Sebastian started by telling us red light district tours were not allowed and should not have been booked. He then took us on a wandering walk around the edges of the district and just rambled about politics for 90 minutes. Do not recommend this tour at all.

Our guide Willem was great. He has lived in the area for many years. We did a 2 hour walking tour and learned a lot about the history of the area. We had the choice of how much time to spend in red light district vs historical area. We opted for more history … a little of the red light district was enough for us. But Willem tailors the trip to your preference.

Walking with Sebastian was truly most excellent. Easy going and like being with a friend showing us his neighborhood. Also made some good foodie suggestions from ethnic to specific French fries!

We didn't know what to expect in the Red Light district of Amsterdam, so we decided to take a tour with Laura. It turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Not only did she give us a quick history lesson, but she conveyed real compassion and empathy for the girls working in the area. For any first timers to Amsterdam I highly recommend this tour. She has additional tours, which we will sign up for the on the next visit to town.

Ian was fabulous! It was like being shown around town by a friend who knew all the cool stories and where to find the best food. And somehow manage to remember all of the places we chatted about and sent us a list at the end of the night so we have exciting places to check out for the rest of our time in Amsterdam. A surprising and heartwarming way to experience the red light district from a local perspective. Plus, Chocolate! Would recommend whole heartedly to everyone.

Anna Maria is insightful, interesting and caring. She was able to adjust the tour to our interests and needs and converted the tour of Amsterdam's tourist trap to a pleasant walk, filled with insights, anecdotes and snippets of history. Highly recommended.

Willem was extremely informative from start to finish. We didn't feel rushed and felt he gave us an in depth tour of the Red Light District. He incorporated churches, and 'coffee shops', and history into his tour and made two American girls feel safe and informed throughout. It was even fun to watch him greet his neighbors who were out and about which showed a different side to that part of town I otherwise wouldn't have seen. Never did I think of it as a neighborhood, with many churches, if it weren't for this guided tour. Overall, highly recommend Willem or a personal tour with a local in general. It was nice to have such a personal tour so we could ask questions and move quickly to cover more ground. You'll learn so much more this way and leave with a different perspective on things. I know I did!

Our tour with Giovanna was the highlight of a two week European trip. She was so knowledgeable and supplied relevant interesting information. I wish I had time for more tours with her!

Four of us booked this tour, and had a very good guide. Our only complaint about him was that he talked so quietly that it was often difficult to hear him. Our tour was at 5 pm, and we found that many of the sights we had heard about (such as women standing in windows) did not begin until after dark. However, our guide gave us excellent info about the prostitution business, the women who are self-employed, plus a lot of interesting historical information on the area. It was a LOT of walking, viewing different streets, restaurants, shops, etc. Even though we didn't get to see the "red lights" after dark, we still felt we got our money's worth.

Paul gave us unique insights into Amsterdam's long history with marijuana along with some great practical information on marijuana itself. All this, plus he is so much fun to be around. We had a great time!

I was in Amsterdam for just 36 hours, and booked a tour with Otto the evening before my flight out. We met up and chatted a bit about what I'd done in Amsterdam so far, and the kinds of things I generally enjoyed doing, after which Otto customized the tour around my circumstances and personality. It's really incredible how intuitive he is, and how seamlessly he is able to micro-adjust topics and activities throughout the tour. I had a blast with him, and in spite of how much I learned, it felt the entire time like I was hanging out with a cool new friend rather than a tour guide. Willem was an excellent tour guide. He was very knowledgeable about the area and had a great sense of humour. There is lot more the the RLD than the sex shops. Lot's of unique history and great architecture. Would definitely recommend this tour.

This was the first time we used Withlocals and we were super happy. Helena was an amazing tour guide who had a lot of knowledge of the areas she showed us and Dutch life in general. The tour did not just focus on the Red Light District but she also talked a lot about the history of the city and surroundings. The walk was very pleasant and all of our questions (plus more) were answered. Helena was even thoughtful enough to bring additional umbrellas as her minute-by-minute local weather app was more accurate than ours! I would definitely recommend setting aside the time for this kind of experience if you want to get more intimate with what locals know. It was absolutely worth it spending a little more over a "lemming" tour.

This was a very fun tour with Arunabha. He was very informative and took us through the Red Light District with a lot of interesting tidbits. There are a lot of strange sights, but if you take them with a grain of salt, you’ll be fine. Definitely leave the kids at home!

I would highly recommend taking a private tour with a local through the Red Light District in Amsterdam. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the district and was prepared to answer all of the very specific questions that our group had regarding how prostitution is conducted in Amsterdam.

Willem was very knowledgeable. The tour through the red light district was full of history and interesting locations that we would have never found on our own.

Manav gave us a tour of the red light district and the coffee shops. He showed up at the agreed time and waited for us as we were a little late. Prior to the tour, Manav messaged us to find out if there was anything specific we wanted to know or see. We were interested in the history of both prostitution and cannabis in Amsterdam and so he focused on that. We visited local coffee shops and Manav explained the laws and local customs and helped us to plan out some of the tours and restaurants we would be visiting while here. He was a wealth of information, speaks fluent English and is well traveled for such a young guy. Lastly, he said he was available via text during the rest of our stay if there was anything we needed to know or help with. Great tour.

Willem met us in Amsterdam's Old City and provided an informative and entertaining tour of it's many sites we could not of discovered any other way. The weather was challenging, but Willem did his best to keep us out of the cold wind and rain as we made our way through the city. He is a local who's intimate knowledge of the city and its history can't be matched by an academic.

Luke was really full of information and knowledge about her country Including some little things on the street or the way we walk through. I had the Nightlight with the red light area with her. She gave us a lot of information on the same places or same street where I went already on 2 ago before our tour started. She filled my trip in Amsterdam completely perfect with her knowledge about her country and her places. Sure, I can travel around by myself as I did it often to many countries in Europe BUT the idea to have some local people on my side, this was my first time. Would love to say it was much better than reading and walking by yourself. Especially Louke, I felt as hanging out with an old friend who knows a lot about her place because she is originally and living there. For instance We walked through some street with some memories on the tiles which placed here so far and I passed it 2 days ago but Louke made it interesting & meaningful immediately when we went there again with her. We will never know many things and history without her. Example as an tiny coffee shop near the Redlight district. Really RECOMMEND her to make your day and miss nothing afterwards!

Just can’t thank Olivier enough for such an amazing tour. He was so friendly. We felt like he was a part of our group. It really didn't even feel like a commercial tour that we were doing. More like a friend showing us the city. The knowledge we got about the coffeeshops was amazing. Extremely informative tour. And A LOT OF FUN. He was in no hurry to rush the tour and just stick to the 90 minutes allotted to it. He just kept showing us more and more of Amsterdam. Superb. Worth every minute.

Claudia is a friendly, enthusiastic guide. She has excellent knowledge of the local history, architecture and culture and was able to share her information in an interesting and enjoyable way. The tour was relaxed and we had plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss everything we saw. Claudia was also able to suggest a couple of restaurants and other things that we might like to do and to advise how best to travel - which bus or tram would be easiest for us.
