Amazing visit! It’s cool to see how Rembrandt lived and worked. Small spaces and tight stairways but wasn’t too crowded for us. Great demonstration of etchings too.

Quite the pleasant surprise visiting the Rembrandt house where Rembrandt actually lived and painted. The Audio tour through the house was very informative. We even witnessed a demo of the methods Rembrandt used to create his engravings. Could have purchased tickets directly through the museum as well.
The tour took about an hour. Audio guide easy to use with the right level of information so not too laborious. Helpful professional staff. Have to say a BIG thankyou to the member of staff (apologies, didn't get your name) who advised myself and my 3 friends after the tour to go and get an espresso martini which we did and thoroughly enjoyed!
Very nice experience! Enjoyed seeing all the items and furniture! It was very clean and loved the stairs!
This was a great exhibit to go see . I would probably prefer to go with someone else to actually talk about our impressions of the art work itself. However solo with the audio tour was very seemless.
I found the size of the house for the 1600s quite amazing. Rembrandt had a good set up while it lasted.
Definitely worth the ticket price - audio guide included. The guide provided a detailed description of each room, the history, the pictures and what day to day life was like.
Well presented timetable and the significant events Rembrandt endured, especially all the family tragedy. Typical money problems, but at least he had some profitable years and lucrative success (unlike Van Gogh) Nice to see historically accurate room furnishings; the favored etchings. Audio guide easy to use; NOTE many rooms have more than the first (3) buttons of explanation; see the arrow and cursor right.
Very interesting and helpful audio guide and visual demonstrations for anyone interested in the details of the skills needed to be an artist in that era and today.
I had a wonderful experience visiting the Rembrandt House Museum. Everything was very clear, beautifully presented, and well organized, and the staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. I would just like to make one small suggestion regarding the language options on the iPads/audio guides. I noticed that Persian (Farsi) is not currently available, while many other languages are supported. It would be wonderful if Persian could be added as well. Although many Persian-speaking visitors may speak English or German, having the option to experience the museum in their native language would make the visit even more accessible and enjoyable for them. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit and was impressed by how thoughtfully everything was presented. Thank you for the great experience!
This was the highlight of our visit to Amsterdam. It was absolutely fascinating to walk around Rembrandt’s house and learn so much about the man, his work and his times. You get a real sense of who he was and what set him apart as an artist. A bonus at the end was a demonstration of paint mixing in the days before premixed oils. The audio guide was excellent. Real value - treat yourself!
We walked to the Rembrandt House Museum from the Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam, and it took us around 15 to 20 minutes. We were travelling with children, so naturally it took a little longer as we stopped along the way to browse the shops and take lots of photos (of course! 😄). We didn't buy tickets in advance and simply purchased them when we arrived. The process was straightforward, and thankfully there wasn't a long queue when we visited. However, during peak tourist periods, it may be worth booking ahead to save time. The museum is located in the house where Rembrandt van Rijn lived and worked for many years, and it gives visitors a fascinating glimpse into his daily life. Walking through the rooms feels like stepping back into 17th-century Amsterdam. The house has been carefully restored and furnished to show how Rembrandt and his family would have lived. One of the most interesting parts of our visit was seeing where Rembrandt created his artwork and learning about his artistic process. We particularly enjoyed the live demonstrations showing how he produced his famous etchings and prints. The staff explained the techniques used at the time, making it easy to understand how much skill and patience was involved. Another highlight was learning how artists created their own pigments from natural materials. The demonstration showed how colours were mixed and prepared before modern paints existed, which was fascinating for both adults and children. The museum offers an audio guide, which is included with admission, and there is also a dedicated child-friendly version. This made the experience much more engaging for younger visitors, as the information is presented in a way that's easier for children to understand and enjoy. Although there aren't many original Rembrandt paintings on display, the museum excels at telling the story of his life, work, successes, and financial struggles. You'll also find many of his etchings and learn how he became one of the Netherlands' most celebrated artists. A few things to keep in mind: ✅ The historic house has several staircases, some of which are quite steep, so comfortable footwear is recommended. ✅ Allow around 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit if you want to listen to the audio guide and watch the demonstrations. ✅ Photography is permitted in many areas, making it a great place for those who enjoy documenting their travels. ✅ The museum is located in the heart of Amsterdam, so it's easy to combine with other nearby attractions, cafés, and canal walks. One thing to note is that Rembrandt's famous painting "The Night Watch" is not displayed in the Rembrandt House Museum. It is housed in the Rijksmuseum, so if you're hoping to see this iconic masterpiece, you'll need to visit both museums during your time in Amsterdam. The Rembrandt House Museum focuses more on Rembrandt's life, home, studio, and the techniques he used to create his artwork Overall, we found the Rembrandt House Museum to be both educational and enjoyable. The interactive demonstrations really bring the artist's world to life, and the child-friendly audio guide makes it a surprisingly good museum to visit as a family. Whether you're an art lover or simply interested in Dutch history, it's well worth adding to your Amsterdam itinerary. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 – A fascinating insight into the life and work of one of the Netherlands' greatest artists.
Audio (and booklet) explained Rembrandt’s life, career, home life, and lifestyle very well. It was also interesting to see his etchings, which were not so prominent in art galleries
This is a great stop for any lover of art while in Amsterdam. It is in the building Rembrandt once lived in. There are very few things that actually belonged to him in the house and it is RECREATED and what they believe it would have looked like when he lived there but it is still very interesting. They have hundreds of his etchings but I believe only one painting. On the first floor they have a small glass case of artifacts that they believe had belonged to him as they were dreged up from the cesspool and are period correct. Other than that I believe everything to be a recreation including the floor with his collection of "stuff." You get the audio tour with the price of admission and it is very informative and i found the English one very easy to understand (I only say that as at a different place in the Netherlands an audio tour i received had a very thick accent and was hard to understand). My one issue with this museum is that you need to know where you are within the house to press the correct corresponding audio clip to go with the room/area. Given the building is skinny with just 2-3 rooms per floor but tall you'd think this is an easy task and somehow I inexplicably seemed to have missed a room or could not figure out for the life of me what I was listening to corresponded to at one point. So many other museums in Amsterdam you have to point at a number on a wall and it will play the corresponding clip and it's so much better. Even if they just had numbers in the rooms so you could pick the correct one on the screen would be better. Overall it was a small inconvenience but i definitely got turned around a couple times like "wait what am i learning about?" There are some stairs to navigate and they are skinny and steep like most places of that period. There are free lockers to put away personal items. They made me lock up my not very big purse. Seems like a lot of people in the comments take issue with this. I dont really feel like it's that big of an issue. They asked I not bring my purse and gave me a free solution to this problem. In the very last room there is the one painting i believe they have an some interesting history on it as it was damaged in a fire and they have a spot with a recreation of what they think it may have looked like originally. If you love art and art history this is a must stop. I really enjoyed it. My husband is not super into art so he went and did something else while I went here and I dont think it would have interested him that much but I really enjoyed it.
It was wonderful!! The tour moved smoothly and the explanation of every room, every painting, his life and family was clear, concise and knowledgeable. Highly recommended it.
Learned much more about Rembrandt than I knew. Lots of steps. A wonderful self guided tour. Recommend.
Really interesting museum - both for the closer look at Rembrandt himself, but also to see what his home life was like.
It was very interesting going into the house of a famous painter. I enjoyed looking at the many pieces of art in his house, including some of his students work. I enjoyed looking at his studios. If I had to pick a favorite part of the tour, it would be: being able to see the timeline of all of his pieces and self portraits. It was kind of crazy to look at the differences of the pieces from his younger self and the few years before he died. There wasn’t many furniture in the rooms, But I guess that’s what it was like when he lived here. We took the family tour, and it was super interesting and entertaining. I would definitely recommend taking the family tour as well as going in in general.
really good audio guide and well- designed visiting route
Very interesting to see and actually stand where Rembrandt lived and worked, especially if you study art or are an artistic painter yourself. We learned a lot about Rembrandt’s personal life. The demonstration showing how the various pigments and dyes and old tools were used to mix paints 400 yrs ago was especially interesting since I am a painter myself.
A beautiful museum allowing us a peek into Rembrandts life. It has a easy to use auto guide. there are paintings by many artists of the period and many sketches by Rembrandt. The house is small so at some points it is crowded but not too much.
Worth the visit. The house and the way he lived and taught was very interesting.
This was great interactive exhibit. The audio guided tour was great and easy to navigate through the house. I learned a lot about Rembrandts life. I was able to see his art collection.
A really pleasant experience. Lovely staff.
This was an outstanding immersive experience. Definitely choose the free audio guide. The house content is restored based on the detailed catalog of the inventory of each room, prepared for the auction of Rembrandt’s estate.
Hats off to this lovely look at Rembrandt’s life. I had just finished a group tour of another site in Amsterdam and saw on my map that the museum was about a 10 minute walk (I walk slowly) away. Who wouldn’t want a peak at Rembrandt’s life? The museum staff was wonderful. English is spoken throughout the building and staff, from the ticket counter to the docents, were extremely helpful. I was able to get the tour commentary through my hearing aids via a phone app. No one pushed you through the exhibits. When I realized my phone was dying, the young lady at the ticket counter let me charge my phone at the counter. She also noticed that a bandage on my hand was coming off so she quickly got out the first aid kit and gave me 3 “blisters” as she called them. Now that’s service. The museum is equipped with a lift to bring you down from the top floor.
Seeing Rembrandt’s house was very interesting. The self guided audio tour gave a lot of good information. Some of the staircases were a little treacherous , steep and without a hand rail. This might make or break it for some people who have mobility issues. Otherwise, it was worth seeing.
Rembrandt the person and the artist is displayed. The staircases and multiple floors make you feel ancient coldness, fears and opportunities. The Rembrandt the Amsterdam resident attempting to survive feeling actually overcomes his amazing talent. This is a must see.
Well laid out with good audio guide. Book ahead. Leaves good feeling of Rembrandt life and work. Excellent experience
We always find it interesting to learn about the person behind the painting/music/sculpture etc. So to visit Rembrandts house where he lived for 19 years was a delight. We came away feeling we had a real sense of the man and his work. A very nice visit.
My family and I had a great experience at the Rembrandt House. My children, ages three to eleven especially appreciated the audio guide which kept them engaged. Their favorite part was getting the chance to draw their own sketches at the end. It was nice to be able to have such a meaningful and impactful experience in a relatively short amount of time. Rembrandt House is well worth a visit whether you are planning to see Rembrandt’s masterpieces in other museums or if you are interested in history or are simply looking for a unique activity in Amsterdam.
Excellent museum! It's much larger inside than it looks on the outside. The audio guide was great and very clear. The museum breaks down Rembrandt's life while living in this house, in addition to his life prior and after living there. The layout of the house was interesting and surprising. Some of his etchings and a few of his paintings where displayed there (probably copies, but good , none the less). Also, his studio where he worked and the the studio where he taught were there too. You will not see the giant paintings that are on Tripadvisor's website in this house. Those are paintings that are in the Rijksmuseum. Someone apparently didn't realize that and posted them at the Rembrandt House Museum. We were at the Rembrandt House Museum for about 2 hours and really enjoyed the tour. If you like Rembrandt, you owe it to yourself to see this museum. If you only have time to go to one museum in Amsterdam, go the Rijksmuseum. It's MASSIVE and has many of the great masters in it.
Came here right after visiting the Rijksmuseum, and it was a great experience. There was no waiting line, and it was easy to explore the house at my own pace with the audio guide. It was amazing to see so many original artworks. Highly recommend if you’re visiting the Rijksmuseum nearby.
Very interesting tour with audio. This was Rembrandt's original house which includes some of his etchings and paintings. I did not walk up five flights of steps which is the only way to see the rooms in this house.
I thought it was a wonderful experience. We had someone give as a demonstration on how Rembrandt made etchings and did his printing. It was wonderful. I would highly recommend this museum.
Museum Het Rembrandthuis is located in the old town of Amsterdam, in an historical house, where this well known painter (Rembrandt) was living for some years. We came here with my 9 years old daughter and all of them were seeing the rooms, listening to the explanations and seeing some reproductions of the paintings. Really an excellent museum to learn about the life of the painter and their artworks. Very recommendable!
Fascinating, time capsule from the past and extremely well preserved Definitely recommend to everyone
takes about an hour to tour the house, takes your through his life, paintings and etchings. Nice gift shop.
I went to the Rembrandt House with my friend whilst visiting Amsterdam and it was one of the greatest museums I have ever experienced and went to. Though it looks small from the outside, we both assumed we would be in the their for only an hour and ended up staying for well over three hours! We did a self guided audio tour which was fantastic end enjoyed reading and looking at everything the museum had to offer. We also went on the anniversary of the founding of the museum and ended up receiving a free book from the woman at the check out desk, who was very lovely and nice! The whole museum was pleasant and I would highly recommend it.
Fascinating tour of Rembrandt’s house. Excellent audio guide. There was a live demonstration of Rembrandt’s etching and printing techniques. So many of his household items are in the house. Also his studio and where he taught students.
Rembrandt’s life story is very well told in the context of his home.
Everything about this visit was absolutely wonderful!!!
This house/museum is really interesting. I enjoyed seeing the house in which Rembrandt lived; the details are fascinating. His studio area was also really neat!
I didn’t know much about Rembrandt apart from a few of his most famous paintings and etchings, and I found the house and studio really interesting. I particularly enjoyed seeing how the studio was set up to teach his students. Oh, and the demonstration of making paint was great. The audio guide was very good - there is no written information, so the headphones are essential. We didn’t book ahead and it was no problem on a weekday, no queue. I see tickets are cheaper in the last hour but we were in there for 2-3 hours so that wouldn’t have worked for us.
I didn’t know much about Rembrandt, I only know his famous painting “the Nacht Wacht” and his self portraits. It was interesting to see the house as it probably was in his time, along with his studio. I enjoyed it very much.
This was an incredible step back in time to better understand and appreciate the inspiration and art of Rembrandt!
Very cozy and beautiful museum. Feels and looks very authentic inside, especially the interactive aspect. It’d be great to have more info about the Rembrandt’s live in audiotour.
I had the Iamamsterdam card and entrance to the museum was included. The entry price is 19.50 so I am going to base my review on that. This is a house museum that Rembrandt lived and painted in. There is loads on information about his life and also plenty of knowledge about the mechanics of painting. There is plenty of artwork to look at on the walls also. You also get to see the normal, basic, day-to-day detail of Rembrandt's life. The stairs are steep, and the higher you go the steeper they get, which is normal for the city. There is enough here to recommend a visit for a tourist that wouldnt have a deep art knowledge, although the entry price might be slightly on the high side.
The home is very interesting, and the narration is informative without being too long. An accurate depiction of the time.
Encarni is such a nice and kind lady. She was super helpful at the gift shop. We had so much fun talking to her.
