About Activity
Discover Dutch culinary traditions and rural heritage on a private countryside tour from Amsterdam. Travel in a luxury van with a private guide and visit the historic villages of Zaanse Schans, Edam, and Monnickendam, with food tastings and cultural experiences throughout the day.
Depart from your Amsterdam hotel and travel through the Dutch countryside, passing green fields, canals, grazing cattle, traditional farmhouses, and rural villages. Your guide will provide insight into local traditions, rural life, and the role of the countryside in Dutch food culture.
At Zaanse Schans, an open-air museum village along the River Zaan, explore traditional wooden houses and historic working windmills, some dating back to the 17th century. Visit the De Huisman spice mill for a speculaas tasting, prepare your own hot chocolate at a local cocoa shop, sample a freshly made stroopwafel, and see a traditional wooden clog-making demonstration.
Continue to Edam, a historic village known for its cheese-making heritage. Walk through its cobbled streets and visit a traditional Dutch butcher shop to taste local specialties including osseworst, grillworst, and kruidnagelworst. At a local candy shop, sample Dutch drop, the country’s traditional licorice, and learn about its distinctive flavors and history.
The tour continues to a family-run smokehouse restaurant, where you’ll taste traditional Dutch fish including herring, smoked eel, and fried cod, accompanied by a glass of jenever or local beer.
The final stop is Monnickendam, a historic harbor town where you’ll enjoy a tasting of Dutch cheeses, including Gouda, Edam, and Leiden cheese, before returning to Amsterdam.
