Henk was very nice and funny even in the face of the hardships our community had to go through. He was easy to find, and it was pleasant to listen to his stories, which were interesting. I'm very glad we booked the tour, it was definitely the best part of the whole trip. Highly recommended

I loved this tour with Henk. He’s super friendly, funny, and knows an incredible amount about Amsterdam’s LGBTQI+ history. It felt like walking around the city with a very knowledgeable friend rather than being on a formal tour. The stories were fascinating, the stops were meaningful, and I learned so much about people and moments that don’t usually make it into the guidebooks. Ending at one of the city’s oldest gay bars was a perfect touch. If you want something unique, personal, and genuinely interesting, definitely book this tour.
This LGBT History Tour is truly something special. You learn so much about past events that affect us all in the community. Who, historically speaking, stood up for us under dramatic and dangerous conditions... this is one of the topics that Henk presented to us in a very warm, authentic, and emotional way. Thank you so much, dear Henk! Highly recommended!!!
Informative and entertaining, passionate and thought provoking tour. So much I didn’t know, has made me more aware of the inequalities and the fight to get the community where they are today.
I had the most wonderful and enlightening time with Henk, our lovely tour guide. Before going on the tour, I thought it would be about the queer struggle in the Netherlands, but instead, Henk made a very solemn and thought provoking connection to the Dutch political history at every step - and how queer people were always there, and were there for the country even when the country was not there for them. From his vast knowledge of dutch history and his dedication to the queer cause - my friend and i talked about it for hours after. This tour left me with questions that I will carry back to my own homeland - who were the queer heroes in my history? perhaps history books don't really carry the names of our queer historical figures, but they were a part of our freedom struggle nonetheless, they were there even if I don't know them. He not only made the queer dutch history relevant to everyone, no matter what our background is - international, dutch, straight or queer, and he kept it so grounded in the Dutch society. This was such a well thought out tour, because even if I forget the specifics, I'll perhaps always get a tiny bit of courage from the men and women who have constantly stood up for the things they believed in & the things that mattered, to them and to people they cared about.
If you are a history enthusiast, or if you are particularly interested in ww2 or the history of Amsterdam, this is an experience you should not miss. The tour offered a refreshing perspective on historical events I thought I already knew well. Having joined many walking guided tours across Europe, this was the first time I truly felt that history can look very different when viewed from another angle. The stories of people who were buried under layers of historical narratives deserve to be seen and remembered. I’m very glad I joined.
This was an amazing tour of the city! Henk blends his distinct experiences, historical knowledge, humor and community advocacy to create a tour that when it was over left you wanting more. Spending time with him felt like getting together for a discussion with an old friend. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the historical references tour pace and back and forth discussions. This is a tour for anyone that is in the LGBTQ+ community or anyone with interest in Amsterdam history as seen through the lens of one of our proud members.
This was an absolutely unique experience: Henk combines his wealth of knowledge about LGBT history with personal stories and experiences. And as a true proponent for the community he has a lot to share! I very much enjoyed the conversations throughout the tour - it was more than just learning about facts but instead diving into characters, evolutions and realities. Having done many guided tours I can truly say that this one is of outstanding quality! Thank you Henk!
Henk's skill at bringing alive Amsterdam's LGBTQI+ forgotten hero's is praiseworthy. Amsterdam, the beacon of tolerance as we know it now. But learning of those who bravely fought for us and how their histories were sidelined is such a pertinent wake-up call. Henk is still a charming, inclusive and entertaining host.
Book this tour. It was a privilege to be reminded of those powerful and brave people who fought for our rights before our time. To consider again our LGBTQ+ truths within a historical and future perspective. Bravo Henk.
It was a very interesting tour with a devoted and knowledgeable guide Henk. Well worth I think, thank you for a great tour!
Hank is very passionate and knowledgeable. He is very much an advocate and it was an honor to be in his presence.
Henk combined his own personal story with Amsterdam's LGBT history in an engaging, effective way. The stories he told of two Dutch LGBT members of the resistance movement during WWII were especially moving.
Forgotten Stories, forgotten hero’s. This tour, hosted by Henk, brings 400 years of queer history (in Amsterdam) to live. Henk does it with emotions and with passion and I was deeply impressed by his personal stories and his storytelling. If you are interested in a part of history that made Amsterdam what it is today join Henk’s beautiful tour.
Amazing interesting man! LGBTQ+ history in Amsterdam, at moment very emotional, personal and confronting! If you have the chance do this tour.
Henk gives a personal and heartfelt tour about queer history of Amsterdam. You can tell he is passionate about what he does.
Super insightful walking tour of the city learning more about the LGBT history. Whether you’re an ally or not, do it.
We did the tour with Henk the day we departed from Amsterdam. I was happy that we took a later train because the tour was totally worth it. Henk gave me a vivid impression of Amsterdam's LGBT locations, heroes like Willem Arrondeus and shared some of his personal experience with us.
So glad I took this tour! Henk is an encyclopedia of knowledge of the history and present state of the LGBTQIA+ in Amsterdam and the Netherlands and delivers his tour provides a unique experience that individuals of any gender, gender expression or sexual orientation can understand and appreciate. Thank you, Henk, for a wonderful educational experience!
We really looked forward to this tour and it did not disappoint. We marveled at how much we learned from a sociological, and historical viewpoint. Henk, the tour guide, is an engaging storyteller, an historian, and so knowledgeable. Henk is a true, and authentic, advocate. If there was another tour Henk was leading, we would take it! Well worth the charge—a bargain, in fact.
Great journey about the hidden en sometimes forgotten gay/queer heroes and places in the history of Amsterdam and the Netherlands.
A wonderful, fun tour, a must for LGBTI + - a journey through queer history and Amsterdam led by the knowledgeable and engaging Hank. Thankyou I thoroughly enjoyed the personal stories and political insights, the tour provided so many more Amsterdam insights than we can see at face value, what a great Dutch historian, only someone with lived experience could make it like that. Come see us in Australia Hank! Pene M
We loved this History Tour with Henk, he was fabulously prepared and informative about the historical contribution and courage of Dutch Gay Men and Lesbians, during WW2 and the HIV/AIDS experience. He was considered and playful, personal and professional all at the same time. It really added a pink triangular lense to our trip to Amsterdam. As a Dyke, I thoroughly recommend doing this if you L, G, B, T or Q!
This was a very interesting and thought-provoking tour. Henk is very knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging. I highly recommend it!
Once you’ve done all the usual tours (on a boat, off a boat, blah blah) give this one a go. It’s a tour through time, more than through space, covering only a few stops in the centre of town, but leading you through a number of key points in Amsterdam’s recognition of LGBT+ rights. Henk is such a fun tour guide, interweaving historical facts, personal anecdotes, and even bits of Dutch poetry, for a really unique tour. He was, of course, happy to answer questions on the way round, and to give our small group some recommendations on places to go next, after the tour.
Company ED&I initiative, 100% recommendable. 2 hours of outdoor walking, discovering untold LGBTQI+ history facts of the city of Amsterdam and how it all links to the present.
Such an amazing tour!! Definitely a highlight of our week in Amsterdam. Henk is so knowledgeable and passionate about preserving and teaching the history of the LGBTQI+ community in Amsterdam. Henk is a kind and empathic person, and a great and knowledgeable guide. His sense of humor and warmth combined with his commitment to preserving and teaching the history of the LGBTQI+ community, made this a do not miss tour while in Amsterdam. We shared tears over the loss of loved ones to AIDS, enriching our deep appreciation for the work he is doing and how important it is to preserve the history of the community and to take affirmative action to achieve civil rights for all. Thank you Henk!!
This tour is a must for anyone interested in queer history. Henk is a very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide. He shared lots of interesting facts and fun anecdotes. We walked through several key streets rooted in queer history from the 18th century to the 1980s. The tour encapsulates the stories of everyday life, politics, art and literature in queer Dutch history. It was a most enjoyable walk where I learnt about the courage of lgbt forebears, how they shaped the rights we enjoy now, and why it is so important to know their story to preserve their legacy and hold onto those rights. I can't recommend this tour enough. Thank you, Henk, for a lovely walk through queer Amsterdam!
Henk was wonderful and particularly accommodating for us as we didn’t realize we were traveling during King’s Day when we booked. The tour is comprehensive and details various time periods throughout history. We were especially delighted to see one of the oldest lesbian owned bars in the city and to meet the new owner. Henk is a great guide. He didn’t shy away from particularly difficult points in history and sprinkled in humor throughout. This ended up being the first thing we did in the city and it really set our trip off to a good start.
Learned a lot of new things and it was very fun at the same time! Have lived in Amsterdam my whole life but everything I learned was new :)
Henk has great knowledge of the queer history of Amsterdam. Even as a Dutch person, most of it was new to me. The personal touch in his storytelling was the cherry on top.
I booked this tour with Henk when I spent a few days in Amsterdam in November, and it was a real highlight of my trip. I was travelling solo, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Henk (and his friend on this particular occasion!) was an extremely interesting and knowledgable tour guide, and it was equal parts fascinating and heartbreaking learning so much about the LGBT+ history of Amsterdam. On top of this, Henk was also very kind and easy to talk to and ask questions to during the tour. Could not recommend more highly!
Compelling stories of Amsterdam’s rich LGBTQ history at every stop! From gay resistance fighters in World War 2 to the oldest gay bar in Amsterdam, this tour was fascinating from beginning to end. The guide held our attention, even in the freezing cold weather! (It was December.) Highly recommend for anyone, but especially if you have LGBTQ people in your family. My trans teen loved this tour!
A highly recommend tour the guide is very nice person with plenty of knowledge of history and open to
A personal, powerful storytelling tour surfacing queer history in Amsterdam and untold stories. Henk is an incredible guide and a wonderful human being- and this is a very special tour that I wholeheartedly recommend. Even if you think you know history - let alone queer history - there’s something here for you to learn.
We had a great time walking around Amsterdam with Henk. He is knowledgeable about LGBTQ history in the city and is personable. It was like being guided by a friend. We appreciated seeing the city through this perspective and definitely recommend.
Henk is a great ambassador for Amsterdam and the LGBTQ community. Personable, funny and intelligent, his sharing of stories and history is nicely interwoven. I have participated in LGBTQ walking tours in NYC and Vancouver, and Henk's tour is one of the best.
Would definitely recommend! Henk is a lovely tour guide who knows a lot about history and takes you to some of the key spots marking Amsterdam’s lgbtqi+ past.
Henk gave a great tour. I felt more connected to Amsterdam in the days that followed. Recommended! Henk is a genuine guy and really brought the city to life.
Its been several days since our tour and I still cant stop thinking about how good it was. Our history, LGBTQ+ History, is often forgotten and rarely talked about but Henk brought it alive for us. Henk uses a variety of mediums to strike at the question of who we are as a community, going back hundreds of years to the present day, reminding you that we are not just some modern question, but have always been around- and always fighting back. Highly recommend for any LGBTQ+ people visiting Amsterdam, and maybe even for the straights who want to learn a little bit. Particularly liked the critical lens that was applied to our history, and who is often put front and center. Not to mention the quotes from gay writers that connected perfectly to the history of what happened in the spaces you get to see. The walk is accessible and there are no stairs, just the occasional old European brick road, so for wheelchair users this tour should work.
Lhbtiq + what it means what did it say it’s important to know the history Got me a a gay guy but for everyone who want to understand what it means to be lhbtiq + in this city
Amazing journey through an undiscovered part of history. Henk is a passionate, humourous and eloquent speaker with an important massage to share. Gives you insights you rarely hear during history class.
Really interesting and personal tour. Henk is a fantastic guide with an enormous amount of knowledge. Way less boring than other walking tours I’ve done in the past, with a focus on the rich queer history of the city. While the tour obviously appeals to the LGBTQIA+ community, we came with a broad group of people some within and some outside of this group and everyone found it extremely interesting. Would reccomend to anyone who loves history of any kind.
This was an excellent tour for understanding the history of LGBTQ Amsterdam. From historical hangings to the modern ideals of tolerance and acceptance (with a major and very interesting dip into the gay resistance during WWII); I was entertained, enlightened, proud, and left with things to think about. Henk is an excellent guide.
We booked Henk's tour as part of a conference for queer archivists. Doing a tour for 'queer history professionals' can be tough but Henk did a really good job presenting an interesting overview of Dutch queer history, teaching us facts we didn't know and telling a moving story of our big queer family. Henk is a very friendly and patient guide who is always open for questions and able to answer them.
I enjoyed meeting Henk who was very informative and passionate about the subject. The places that we visited were very interesting and relevant. He certainly showed how important a role the community within the city has played in the LGBTQI+ story of progress over many decades. I would definitely recommend this tour to everyone whether members of the community or allies. In some ways it is even more important for people from outside the community to take part. LGBTQI+ history is part of everybody's history.
What a great tour of Amsterdam's LGBT history! Loved every minute of it. Henk was very knowledgable and a wonderful guide. Glad he is keeping out history alive!
Henk was an amazing guide - it was great to hear him weave personal anecdotes amongst the history, and use the past to reflect on the situation of LGBTQ+ people today. You not only got a sense of how LGBTQ+ fit into the story of the city, but a real sense of community, from the queer comrades fighting off Nazis and raiding the city registry, to the gay men who refused to pay to enter nightclubs in the world’s first gay capital - all while raising money for vital research on AIDs. A fantastic tour - highly recommend.
Super engaging conversation with Henk and a wonderful walk through Amsterdam's LGBTQI+ historic places. We booked this as a company tour and it was also a great way to raise awareness and get employees meet each other in an informal setting and share their views
Henk's tour is a fabulous overview of Amsterdam's amazing lgbt history and present. One of the highlights of our Pride week trip!
