Zaanse Schans is an open air museum that houses a collection of working windmills, wooden houses, barns and shops dating back to the 18th and 19th Century. All these buildings were brought here from 1961 on, bringing back to life this most prosperous period of the Zaan region.
Drive from the Zaanse Schans back to Amsterdam, where your guide will drop you off.

I booked this as part of my birthday weekend solo trip to Amsterdam, and I cannot recommend it enough! Fantastic opportunity to see more of The Netherlands, and the whole thing was very smooth and well organised. Originally booked the shorter tour, but got upgraded due to numbers - and thank goodness! The addition of visiting Volendam was extremely welcome and made for a great end to a great day :) The guide Rob was fantastic; this was the highlight of my trip!!
It’s a lovely trip to a quaint city surrounded by Wind Mills. The houses and stores are very picturesque.
Lovely trip. Very picturesque village and the experience was fabulous
Great wooden shoe demonstration and amazing cheeses to taste. You then get lots of free time to explore the village and watch the windmills.
Very nice bus ride short super cute area lots of little shops so you can buy souvenirs. Rob, our driver was great and so was Rob our tour guide!
A very nice tour. So help those with mobility issues, please state that there is a walk to the provided transportation.
Great tour. Lots to see. Perfect place to go and visit. Cheese tour and clog demonstration was very interesting
A great experience with a comfortable bus ride to the village. The windmills, wooden shoe-making demonstration and cheese factory were all enjoyable and informative. There was plenty of time to explore the other areas and grab a bite to eat without feeling rushed.
The booking process was fairly easy. Confirmation was received in advance of our tour. We arrived at the meeting point and the agent (Anna) could not locate our reservation. She eventually found the confirmation. We received an email just prior to the tour that we were receiving a perk of an additional stop at the end of the day that would add 90 minutes to our agenda. We did not want to add the extra stop as we had previous plans but were told we had no option except to cancel the full tour. We were forced to make a quick decision. The meeting point was across the street from the Amsterdam Centraal train station. To get on the bus, we had to navigate a very busy walk of at least 15 minutes towards the harbor/water. While we did not have a mobility issue, several in our group did. Not a great way to begin the day. The tour bus was good, the driver very personable. There was no audio provided for multi-lingual participants: the website did state an English speaking tour. We quickly learned that the tour guide would be speaking in both English and Spanish throughout the day. Again, not what was sold to us. The tour guide did her best in keeping all passengers safe and as informed as possible. The arrival at Zaanse Schans was good. Specific times were reinforced for 'back to bus'. Arrival at the cheese portion of the tour was confusing. Doors were locked and frankly the staff did not know we were on the visitors list or they were unprepared. Sampling the various cheeses was nice. The wooden shoe/clog demonstration was rushed; again the staff did not know we were going to be onsite. The machines were not ready for the demonstration. There was no time to engage or visit the gift shop. Very little interest for us. I believe this visit was quick to allow for the 'added' stop. The final stop to the fishing village was a true waste of time. The bus had to park away from the center of the town, lots of walking again with poor guidance by the tour guide. This tour, aside from the visit to the windmills, was Very Very disappointing.
Fun day outside of Amsterdam at Zaanse Schans Village. Great tourguide Rob. Informative helpful and courteous. Loved the tour! Windmills were the highlight.
Very quick, but great getaway for a couple hours from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. Nice opportunity to get good quality cheese.
Had a really fun time. Tour guide was knowledgeable and funny. Would recommend.
A 2 hour drop off time isn’t enough for this area …. 1/2 day & full day would be best … great for families… You can actually get via public transportation/ local bus … but we saved €10 using the guided tour … BEWARE of pickpockets - they frequent most tourist spots - so keep valuables locked up at hotel and minimize your cash flow while travelling …
The tour guide never showed up at the meeting point. We called the emergency number 3 times with the help of Amsterdamets. No one ever answered the phone. We were stranded after paying for an outrageous cab fare from the cruise terminal. Later that night I went on the Viator ap and saw a cancellation message that was sent after the start time. I will feel uncomfortable booking Via Viator Hope fully we will get a refund.
Great, easy way to get from Amsterdam over to the windmill village. The tour guide also arranged the demonstrations for us so we didn’t have to wait in lines. Plenty of free time for a bit of shopping and a baked good with espresso. The bus was clean and well-maintained. 10/10 easy and fun trip.
If you are staying at The Movenpick Hotel, the bus is about a 1/2 mile right on the harbour. We walked a mile to the meeting point across from Amsterdam Central Station, only to double back with the tour guide and 40+ people. If we had known I would have contacted the tour guide to see if we could meet them at the tour bus area. It was a fantastic tour and our guide Anna was great!!
I booked it because it to see the windmills and because it was only three and a half hours long but they decided to add on another site making it an extra hour and a half longer. I could have done without the additional time.
Diedrich was very nice and informative. What to see, where to go, how to make the most of your experience. We also talked about the monkey preserve in Ubud, Bali. I highly recommend Diedrich if you are lucky enough to get him.
We had a lovely informative guide who explained everything well. The area was a true Dutch experience. Watching the clog making, hearing about the cheese making, which included tasting about 35 different cheeses was a treat. The windmills were very large ones. You could even go up in one if you wanted. I would recommend this experience and very close to Amsterdam City.
Amazing place, one of the very few places we have taken tours to, well, we would have liked a little bit more free time. Highly recommended.
Be prepared to spend more if you want to go inside the windmills. We didn’t know this and we didn’t carry euros with us. The pancake place on site though was awesome!
Comfortable bus ride to a charming village with windmills, a wooden shoe maker and a cheese making facility. Plenty of time to enjoy each section and have something to eat and drink.
Very nice. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. It involved a bit more walking than we had thought which was harder in the heat.
Was easy to organise, I booked over Internet, and found out where we had to meet was right in the centre, which is easy to find from most places, we caught the metro. We met our host, and got led to a coach. Well organised, informative, don't have masses of time, but it was OK for us.
Great experience, MUST DO while visiting Amsterdam. Very beautiful scenery, great and friendly staff
It was really fun to see the shoemaking process and learn/try the different cheeses! The windmills were beautiful and Rob was very nice and gave us a lot of information. Just be careful if you want to eat on site - it is very expensive.
Never got in the tour. We were at the meeting place 15 minutes before the tour however the lady behind the counter said they are not running, they only had the9:30 and 1130
Would have been great, but our driver never showed up at the designated meeting point. Therefore we had to get another ticket with a different company., which didn't go on a water cruise. Therefore, I expect my money to be refunded in full.
Part of large group. Well organized. 10 min walk to bus. Fabulous tour guide. Tour in both English and Spanish. Beautiful old town. Amazing presentations, yummy cheese tasting. Highly recommend this tour.
There is alot of walking, it's not good for older people or any with disabilities, we were so tired and my knee & leg hurt the entire time.
The bus picks you up right outside the central station! The bus was nice and the tour was informative. Going inside the windmills is an extra charge but worth it!
We booked this tour as we wanted to check off a couple of things off our must-see list in Amsterdam. This is the perfect tour if you want to get a taste of major sights: windmills, Gouda cheese and wooden clogs. All are situated in one location making it convenient and no need to take up time with driving to multiple locations. This trip includes transportation in a comfortable air-conditioned bus and a tour guide. Our guide was Derek - who was very knowledgeable about the sites and stories surrounding our visit. The tour starts off with a live presentation on how wooden clogs are made. Then to the gift shop where a wide array of shoes are available - from souvenirs to actual wearable shoes. Next the cheese making presentation, which leads to some fantastic cheese tasting. Their products are amazing and they had such a variety to choose from! I plan to order some for XMas! Lastly the windmills. There are four large windmills nestled along the river’s edge, an absolutely breathtaking scene. We could have easily spent the day there but the tour manages to squeeze all this in half a day. I would suggest taking the first tour in the morning as a means of getting to the park earlier. We noticed the park was starting to get more crowded as we were getting ready to leave. This tour is money well spent and we would highly recommend.
Great half day tour outside of the city. Great mix of guided tour and free time, which is my preference. Several little shops and food options, better than expected. Not far drive from city centre. It wasn’t entirely clear for meeting spot to depart and there was a wall to the bus which could be a challenge for those with limited mobility. I opted for canal cruise addition which was very close to departure point for bus tour and the canal cruise was great.
I think it was a little overpriced and a very commercial, seemingly purpose built village. There was a lot of free time and the restaurant was very expensive, eg eur 10 for a glass of wine
It was good but a little rushed. Would have loved about 30 more minutes in Zaans. Our tour guide was wonderful. She was very friendly and knowledgeable.
Very good. We'll worth it. Lovely quaint Dutch town. Great guide, very knowledgeable. Bus driver and journey excellent
I recently went on the Zaanse Schans tour, and both our guide and driver happened to be called Rob! Our guide, Rob, was absolutely fantastic – friendly, patient, and incredibly accommodating, especially towards guests who were unable to walk quickly. He was knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about what he does. He made the tour both fun and informative, and his genuine, gentlemanly nature made a great impression on everyone. He was a true legend, and I would happily book another tour with both Rob and the company in the future. Rob, our driver, was excellent too. He drove safely and professionally, and his coach was exceptionally clean and tidy. He was also friendly and welcoming, which helped make the whole experience even more enjoyable. A brilliant day out and highly recommended!
Very good tour, tried lots of cheeses, learned some interesting stuff. The village was very nice and the sheep were friendly!
Great tour that we booked sort of last minute, our guide was helpful with local information and pointed out areas of interest. The village is lovely and quaint, the cheese and treats delicious.
Nobody was at the tour desk, couldn’t find anyone to help, did not get the tour I booked. Requested a refund and was denied.
The group was too large and made visiting the Zaans difficult but we loved the upgrade to Vollendam! Also recommend the canal cruise.
Great tour guide. Loved all 3 stops. Going to the fishing village area was wonderful. Loved all the shops and cafe’s
Rick was great. Very informative. Finding the meeting site was a disaster. The white building was not white and the address in Google maps too you 47 km away. Need to clean up instructions.
It’s a really complete experience. You get to see so much about Dutch traditions. The tour guide was great
The tour operator did not provide a tour guide. The bus driver was left to run the tour and he clearly had no idea what the agenda was supposed to be. The itinerary that was advertised said we would have two and a half hours at the windmills. Instead we had just over one hour. Get an Uber and do it in your own time instead.
Really good trip the guide was very knowledgable and funny. Peaceful restored Windmill village and Voledam the fishing village was very beautiful too. Excellent demos for the clog making and cheese making.
It’s a visit to windmills with some history of the windmills mixed in. It’s a bus tour. The tour stops in an area where you learn about cheese making and wooden shoe making as well as about windmills. There is time to shop a little. There is not time for lunch.
It was a wonderful morning. The bus driver was excellent. The demonstrators at the venue were excellent, and the windmills were charming.
Was put on the wrong tour, even though Viator says we are entitled to a refund the tour company says no. Saw almost the same things on the tour we went on versus the tour we booked except the tulips. Who goes to Amsterdam in April and doesn't see one tulip even though you pay for a tour with tulips. Be aware of the tour company you are booking with through Viator.
