Itinerary
Mikes Bike Tours Amsterdam – Where the Adventure Begins Your countryside escape starts just a short walk from Amsterdam Central Train Station, right in the heart of the city. Here you will meet your local guide, get fitted for your e-bike, and enjoy a relaxed safety briefing before setting off together. As you cycle along the IJ River, the sound of the city begins to fade and the adventure opens up ahead. The first few minutes are an easy warm-up along wide bike paths, with views of boats gliding across the water and locals commuting by bike a perfect introduction to Amsterdam life.
Ferry to Amsterdam North – Crossing into a Different World You’ll cycle onto the local ferry and sail across the IJ River, sharing the ride with locals heading home or to work. It’s a beautiful moment of contrast, one side of the river is bustling Amsterdam, the other a world of calm. As you arrive in Amsterdam North, the scenery transforms almost instantly into open skies, grassy fields, and winding levee roads. You’ll feel the shift in pace immediately, this is the Netherlands at its most peaceful.
Krijtmolen d’Admiraal Windmill – A Living Piece of Dutch History Your first stop is at the historic Krijtmolen d’Admiraal windmill, dating back to 1792. Here, your guide shares stories of how windmills once powered the Netherlands, draining water, grinding grain, and shaping the country’s very landscape. It’s a chance to step back in time and snap photos of one of the few remaining working windmills within Amsterdam’s city limits.
Waterland Countryside – The Dutch Countryside at Its Best As you leave the last houses behind, the true beauty of Waterland unfolds before you. Smooth cycle paths trace narrow canals, and the horizon stretches endlessly across green meadows where cows and sheep graze quietly. Your guide will tell stories of how these polders, land reclaimed from the sea, were built and protected by generations of Dutch engineers. This stretch is pure freedom on two wheels, wind in your hair, fresh air in your lungs, and scenery so flat and vast that it feels almost endless.
Broek in Waterland – A Timeless Village of Wooden Houses Soon you’ll roll into Broek in Waterland, a postcard-perfect village of wooden houses, flower gardens, and still canals. Once home to wealthy sea captains, its 17th and 18th century homes are painted in soft pastel colors and surrounded by quiet beauty. This is one of the most photographed villages in the Netherlands, and your guide will share stories of its history and preservation as you enjoy a relaxed ride through its peaceful lanes.
Irene Hoeve Cheese & Clog Farm – Taste and Tradition Combined Next, stop at a family-run farm where two classic Dutch crafts come together: cheese and clogs. Watch a clog maker carve wooden shoes by hand, then see how fresh milk is turned into rich, creamy Gouda cheese. You’ll taste different varieties, from young and mild to aged and nutty, and maybe even meet the cows who made it possible. It’s an authentic slice of Dutch life and a favorite stop for guests from around the world.
Monnickendam – Medieval Beauty by the Water Cycle through the cobbled streets of Monnickendam, a picture-perfect harbor town filled with centuries-old houses, quiet waterways, and history on every corner. Once a major trading port that rivaled Amsterdam, it’s now a charming village that feels like a step back in time.
Continue your ride through Zuiderwoude, a peaceful village of traditional wooden homes and quiet canals. It’s a perfect snapshot of rural Dutch life, where time seems to slow down and every corner looks like it belongs on a postcard. You’ll pause briefly to enjoy the view and take photos before cycling on toward the city.
As you ride back toward the city, the open fields slowly give way to Amsterdam’s skyline. You’ll cross the IJ River one last time with the wind in your hair and a smile on your face, carrying the sights, stories, and flavors of the countryside with you. Back at Mike’s Bike Tours near the OBA building, your guide will help you wrap up your adventure and share local tips for where to enjoy your evening in true Dutch style.

Simon was an absolutely fantastic tour guide. This is a must do activity for anyone going to Amsterdam.
Took off a star as they rescheduled our booked tour due to not having the minimum number. Great bikes, well planned tour with a good range of places to visit, some interesting history and a friendly, personable guide. I’d have enjoyed a bit more detailed history and less cliched tourist stuff (cheese and clogs place was very cringy) but that probably just my taste! I’d highly recommend this tour and would book again with Mike’s Bikes.
This is my second time doing this ride around the countryside surrounding Amsterdam. Our guide, Mark, was simply excellent: a former teacher and Amsterdam native who was just amazing at explaining the history of the city and region. I can't say enough how much we enjoyed this guided tour. I've done it a couple of years ago, and just had to bring the whole family this time. If you're nervous about biking this much, don't be: electric bikes make it literally effortless for all ages. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone, cyclists or people who haven't ridden a bike since grade school. One small detail is that if you're expecting to see a lot of windmills, this isn't quite that -- it's more about the countryside, dikes, cheese farmer, and touring the lovely countryside. Yes, there is a historic windmill at the end, but it's not the focus of the tour.
We had an amazing time with our tour guide Simon. Such an interesting and fun tour, despite the weather. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this tour on ebikes.
This was our best day in Amsterdam! Five hours of cycling may seem like a lot, but to be out in the countryside surrounded by beautiful fields, farm life, canals and villages was a lovely treat. Our wonderful guide, Mark, enlightened us with Netherlands history and water engineering. Our son is eager to return to do more cycling after seeing Amsterdam and the surrounding area. Thank you, Mark!!
We were lucky to have Mike as our guide, he was informative, funny and engaging. The four hour ride was easy on the e-bikes and the cheese and clogs were great
Excellent bikes. Easy great ride. Ann the guide did an excellent job of accommodating all levels of riders. Clog and cheese stop was a highlight as well as the Dutch culture outside of Amsterdam in the farmland towns we visited
Fabulous experience! Anne was a exceptional guide. Very patient & knowledgeable. Riding thru the city & countryside was lovely. The guy at the cheese & clog factory was quite the character. Highly recommend this adventure!!
We had one of the most beautiful bike rides to the countryside and it was worth every penny. We did the 2:30pm so we didn’t have to wake up super early for a ~4hr bike ride. Big shout out to our guide Mark, funny and enlightening story telling. I’ll recommend a guided city tour with Mike’s tour, to anyone visiting Amsterdam.
What a lovely day! Though it started out drizzly, the weather improved. By the time we left the clog and cheese shop, the sun actually peeked out for a bit. The ride was leisurely and easy to do. It was so nice to see some of the countryside and the animals and birds. I also enjoyed the short stops in a couple of towns. Anne was a wonderful guide, friendly and attentive. We ended up being a small group of five participants and that was nice too.
We loved this tour of the country side Paul was very informative and funny. Perfect country side bike ride.
It was so nice to see a different side of Amsterdam and bike through the picturesque countryside. Annemarie was a great tour guide as well!
We had a great time on this tour. Simon was our guide and took us through beautiful parts north of Amsterdam that we never would have experienced otherwise.
We had a great time on this bike ride with our guide, Simon. He was funny and attentive to all 14 people on the ride. We passed through some beautiful villages and he was very knowledgeable about the history of the areas where we stopped. The distance wasn't difficult because of the e-bikes which were very easy to use. There was a bathroom stop at the clog and cheese making business, as well as an opportunity to buy cheese and other souvenirs there. I highly recommend this bike ride if you would prefer a less stressful experience than riding in the city center of Amsterdam.
Had a fantastic time on our bike tour with Simon as our guide. From picking up the bikes that were all fitted with panniers so we could put any bags we had in them, it was an electric bike tour and all the bikes were well maintained and easy to use. Simon was an excellent knowledgable guide who was patient and so friendly, we were taken out into the countryside which was so lovely, it helped we had a warm(ish) sunny day with no wind, we went to a clog and cheese farm run by a crazy man called Steve, there was lots to see here and you never felt under any pressure to buy anything from the shop although most people on our tour did as it was so good value and lots of lovely things to buy. We topped of the bike ride with a visit to a windmill and cycled past lots of great house boats, I really can't recommend this tour highly enough, you would be crazy not to do this. As Amsterdam is so flat and the electric bikes are so easy to ride it really would appeal to most levels of fitness and a lot of different ages. Hats of to Simon who made the tour so good.
Easy to handle the e-bike but it can be heavy so adjust your seat to the right height. Be prepared to travel 40km for the long trip but it’s worth it!
This was great! Simon was a very knowledgeable and fun guide. It was great to get out of the city and experience some of Dutch culture. I highly recommend!
Simon was a great guide, adapted to the groups different needs, and we had such a fun time. The only thing I would consider for shorter people, that their smallest bike was big for my family member which made it a little challenging for her to get on and off.
This was by far my favorite thing we did in Amsterdam. I highly recommend this tour, especially with Paul as your guide.
Great countryside bike ride. You get to see many great sites, visit a cheese and clog making shop. Fresh air and fun!
Amazing! Sam was extremely knowledgeable and pleasant. I would highly recommend requesting him as your guide. What a beautiful countryside. Highly Recommend!
Fantastic way to see the country side! The cheese & clogs stop was fun. Our tour guide (Simon) was great, very knowledgeable & fun to chat with.
Risa was knowledgeable and watched out for all of us. E-bikes made it so easy to do and we did little riding in busy places.
A fun countryside biking experience, outside the city! You truly get the culture of the country. A fun e-bike tour through a fishing village, family run cheese and clog business as well as a plethora of local lore. Sam truly made the experience memorable. We highly recommend this tour!
Mark is an amazing tour guide, showing us around the country side of North Holland where he grew up, while at the same time making sure everyone in the tour is safe on their bike throughout the tour. Man rode the bike with his flip flop.
This was so fun! My son and I were excited to get out of the city and see the countryside. The bikes were easy and fun to ride. The tour guide was fun, knowledgeable and took us on a really fun route. The weather was great and we thoroughly enjoyed this excursion.
We were in a group of 12 riders with one guide which we thought was too many riders with just one guide. Our guide asked for someone to ride in the back to be sure everyone kept up so one of our friends volunteered. A few of the riders were less experienced and we feel that warranted a second guide. There were a few issues with the bikes also...chain falling off, battery pack not staying locked in place. The ride itself is pretty, maybe a little long. The gouda cheese and clog stop was nice.
Viator app sent us to the wrong address and vendor never responded. We missed the tour. Viator could not get a hold of Vendor.
The bike ride was very nice, as you traveled along the beautiful countryside and pastures. Christian, our guide, was just awesome. He made sure that everyone was comfortable with their e-bike. He also explained the Dutch rule if the road when biking in the Netherlands. There were a number of stops where he provided insights into the area. He also took pictures of the group with his camera and we were able to download them from their website. I fully recommend this tour who wants to get out of the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam.
Bike riding in Amsterdam is a great way to experience its culture and see the beautiful countryside. We chose the 26.2 mile e-bike tour. Mark was a fantastic guide and taught us a great deal about canal and dam systems.
Amazing excursion! The scenery is wonderful and the activities you do along the way are very nice. The guides were awesome and made the trip even more fun!
HIghly recommend this tour! Our guide - David - was the best!! Really enjoyed biking out of the city to the country to see the farmland, dikes, windmills, and the nifty clog/ cheese shop. Be sure to buy things there as they are much less expensive than in the city!! Bikes were great and easy to ride. Definitely a highlight of our 3-days in Amsterdam.
My wife and I took the Countryside Bike Tour: Cheese, Clogs & a Windmill yesterday, and we had an absolute blast! It was a fantastic way to escape the busy city center and see the beautiful Dutch countryside. Our guide, Mark, was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and friendly. He shared great historical insights and kept the entire group safe and entertained throughout the ride. Visiting the local farm to learn about traditional cheese and clog making—along with seeing a classic windmill up close—was a major highlight. If you are looking for a fun, scenic, and authentic experience in Amsterdam, we highly recommend Mike's Bike Tours and asking for Mark!
Absolutely fantastic guide! Was pouring but made it even more of an adventure! Excellent!
Fantastic experience! Highly recommend. And Christian was a great guide. Very helpful with teaching us the ways while biking here in Netherlands.
Excellent tour and wonderful guide…would recommend many to Es over. Ride is lovely as are stops in idyllic villages- great farm. Simon funny, warm, lovely guide!
E bike made the ride more enjoyable especially when the wind picked up. Rissa was a fun guide. Amazing how there are bike paths everywhere.
Probably my favorite part of my Eurotrip! Lovely countryside, beautiful small villages, windmills, and more. Also can’t forget the clogs and cheese!
This was the perfect way to experience Netherlands countryside. We were so fortunate to have Rinse as our guide: knowledgeable and passionate about his work, he is also funny and kind. He kept us all safe navigating the roads and even took pictures for us throughout the tour. Definitely my favourite part of the family tour to the Netherlands and a must-do again for next time.
What a wonderful trip. Mark was knowledgeable and shared his love of The Netherlands with us. He even ordered some rain! The country’s side is beautiful and the e-bikes are a perfect way to experience it. Thanks again Mark!!
In the description they said a Windmill, this was correct but slightly misleading for a first timer. There was one Windmill but not the popular Windmills. This was my first time in Amsterdam and fell for it. The tour goes through countryside at speed and no time to enjoy. If you only want a long bike ride this will be fine but if you want to enjoy the views and feel the countryside this is not what you want.
Fabulous! Got to experience a beautiful countryside culture of small towns and churches, farmland and farm animals, fresh country air and a beautiful landscape! Our tour guide “Rinse” was so knowledgeable of everything and taught us some interesting history! He was full of great stories and even a dad joke! The wooden shoe and cheese stop was amazing too! I’d recommend this tour to anyone!
We really enjoyed the bike tour! Mark was an excellent guide. You need to wear mosquito repellent, I got 6 bites!
Anne was an excellent guide and kept things moving with interesting commentary and a great itinerary. The ride was fantastic and we felt like it was well worth it! Would highly recommend.
Great tour yesterday with Mark - he is so knowledgeable and his “teacher” approach was great! We had perfect weather (we were expecting wind!) for cycling and the bikes were in great shape. The clog and cheese demonstration was very short and sweet, and the presenter was very funny. My favourite part of that app was the duck guard troop! My only complaint was that it was too short- I would have loved the chance to have a wander through one of the lovely villages we went through, but we are already planning a trip back so we can explore the countryside a bit more! Thanks very much Mark and Mike’s Tours!
Top highlight of our thirteen day trip to Germany and the Netherlands by consensus of our family of four. Seeing the countryside outside of Amsterdam, wild and domestic animals, the outdoors , and an unexpected surprise at the cheese factory with the cheese song and near ballet performance.
Christian was a fantastic guide, we had a lot of fun and interesting information along the way. Bring water and snacks. The E-bikes have saddle bags to hold anything you want to bring with you. The bike shop has free sunscreen, and helmets are included. It is also extremely windy so dress in layers and pack lip balm.
Scenic, informative, fun. My wife had never done an EBike. Our guide was great helping her get started. Overall great day
Very enjoyable ride that I would recommend. Anne was an excellent guide and I would rate experience at a 10.
