Had a genuinely bad experience with A-Bike rentals. I honestly can't understand how they have such a high rating. **TLDR:** They lost my reservation, didn't have the bike I booked, upsold me into the wrong bike, and handed us bikes with skipping gears, worn-out brakes and rusted bolts. Then they claimed the bikes were new. On top of that, they nickel-and-dime you for helmets, phone holders and flat tire help. Great countryside, terrible rental. Go anywhere else. I reserved the bikes online the day before. Their reservation system didn't ask for sizing, so I wrote to them that same day to confirm they had a big enough size for my father. They said they did. So they clearly saw my reservation. When we arrived, they couldn't find my reservation, and the trekking bike I had reserved wasn't even at that store. I had the confirmation email right there showing everything was correct. Instead of fixing their mistake, the fast-talking salesman pushed me into their city touring bike. Huge mistake. I had planned a 40-mile ride, and this bike was far too uncomfortable and slow for it. And after confirming in writing that they had the right size for my father, their e-bike was still too small for him. With our day already planned, we took the bikes anyway. Then came the extras. Helmets cost extra. Phone holders cost extra. They don't provide a flat kit, and if you get a flat, they'll only help you if you paid extra for their insurance. Every other rental I've used has included all of this for free. Here, basic safety gear and roadside help are treated as upsells. The bikes were in terrible condition. I have rented bikes in 15 other cities in 9 other countries this year, and this was easily one of the worst, which is embarrassing for a city famous for biking. The shifting was completely out of alignment: front and rear would skip, refuse to shift, or rub. The brakes were worn down to the point that stopping power was noticeably reduced. The grips were literally coming apart in my hands. When we returned the bikes and raised these problems, the guy told us the bikes were new and had only been in the shop for a week. I looked down and saw that every single bolt was rusted. So either they bought terrible bikes, or he flat out lied to my face. Neither is acceptable. I highly recommend biking in the Amsterdam countryside. The ride itself was incredible. But do yourself a favor and rent from literally anyone else.

Bikes were great, but place was under staffed and very crowded with many people waiting to get their bikes. Once on our way, the bikes worked great, and the location right beside the park was excellent.

We got our bikes for a day rental to tour the city and it was an amazing experience. Maddie was exceptional and helped us with not only the rental but with some tips for how to get around Amsterdam and ride like a local. They were super nice and set us up for an amazing day and night seeing the city.

Lovely ​and accommodating staff, great choice of bikes, terrific locations​. A+ A-bike shop staff in Amstel and Vondelpark branches. UNLESS ​t​hing goes ​badly wrong​ and the lovely staff have no choice but to refer you to head office. I set off on E-bike ​from the Amstel shop near hotel into the complex ​unfamiliar futuristic rules of Amsterdam ​Centrum traffic​.​ E-bike kept inexplicably shutting down​ always at ​w​orst moments​--entering a hump bridge​--crossing tram tracks​--e​ver tried to pedal a gristmill? That's what E-bikes turn into when power stops. T​hought it must be my ​own incompetence​. B​ut after 90 minutes of fury and close calls, I worked out it was the E-bike that was defective. ​A different branch​ let me swap it over for a good E-bike to get back to the Amstel branch​ and hotel. Full refund expected of course, and maybe 90 minutes free trying different bikes out with the wife the next day...maybe an Amstel Light as well...that's all I asked for. Head office counter-offered with this: 50% discount on the €40 rental because, hey, after all, I got a good E-bike to get home, right? Oh, and 10% off my next rental with A-Bike. Right. I hate dissing my cycling brethren, but I had tell Head Office to roll up their offer of a laughable €20 refund and smoke it. If I were charging an hourly rate as a hazard test pilot to work out a mystifying problem A-bikes urgently needed to know about in their E-bike fleet, €400 Euro/hour danger money would still be laughably cheap. Thinking seriously of them an invoice.

I always rent from a dash bikes when I’m in Amsterdam because their equipment isn’t the best shape, no surprises on checkout as in insurance or extra fees. I like working with Nash at the store near Leidseplein. He always makes sure the seat is the right height, the tire pressure is good and I know how to use their newest locks. This is my sixth time to rent, next time will be the seventh!

The bike rental was seamless and great! We booked online the night before, picked up the bikes at 10:30, brought them back for 17:45. Sasha was great! He explained how to use the locks and it couldn’t have been easier!
