Itinerary
Art Zoo Museum, housed in one of the most enchanting 17th-century canal houses, is a tribute to the animal kingdom and nature. In this oasis in the heart of Amsterdam, the breathtaking taxidermy art of Darwin, Sinke & Van Tongeren takes on an almost theatrical dimension. Feathers gleam, muscles are taut, eyes seem to follow you with interest. From enormous aviaries, you gaze into a world where animals reign supreme: timeless still lifes with the grandeur of the Dutch Masters. From colourful birds and winding snakes to imposing crocodiles and a T. rex – it's as if they could spring to life at any moment. Walk through the museum with a free self-guided audio tour, available in 10 languages, to learn more about the works and the history of the building. End your visit in the historic garden and at the Italian bar for a coffee. A hidden gem in the centre of Amsterdam.

Beautiful museum! I heard about it from a colleague, I didn't know it existed. I wonder if more publicity is needed to let know Amsterdam visitors that this pearl on the canals exists.
I had a great time at the Art Zoo Museum, definitely the most unique natural history exhibition I've been to. I really enjoyed how it focused on the beauty of nature. Definitely take an audio guide as it gives a whole lot of interesting facts and stories.
One of my favorite "museums" I've seen in Amsterdam! Thought I tend to think of it more of an extensive art gallery as it is very artistic in it's purpose and expression. As a dinosaur and animal lover, this museum was the perfect blend of natural history and art museum. They had a scavenger hunt for my 5 year old and 3 year old and the kids loved it. They have a very lovely and delicious cafe as well. The building itself is also part of the experience as the old canal houses are extraordinary pieces of architectural art.
It was a great experience seeing the art they made with animals and their message. We had a English audio guide as well which told us more about the artworks which was nice. It doesn't take long to visit all the place, it's good for a short trip to enjoy. It wasn't crowded, the staff was very helpful and friendly. The admission fee can be cheaper for students, and they have free lockers to store your stuff. At the end, there is a bar with one of the coziest and most beautiful backyards I've seen. It was a nice experience. It is best for people wanting a short but enjoyable visit to a more unique museum.
Very cool exhibition, true art!
This was the coolest museum I have ever seen! Highly recommend if you’re looking for something unique and educational to do. The free audio tour was a pleasant surprise and provided great insight and education on the pieces.
Fascinating and memorable exhibit. Highly recommend. Nice little cafe and beautiful garden to enjoy as well.
Unique and fascinating - totally worth a visit. Went early and had the place to myself to walk through the exhibits twice. So many things to see and learn. Really well thought out.
Amazing. Loved every bit with the added delight of brunch in the garden on a Sunday morning . I will bring all my guests visiting Amsterdam.
Amazing experience. Super interesting and impressive, very kid friendly. Our 3 year old loved it! Great staff!
This is one of the best museums I’ve been to. Took my family here while we visiting Amsterdam and I can’t praise it enough. My young child loved it and so did we. Great service, beautiful café downstairs, the movie was great and the vibe was 10/10. Marvellous
I very rarely leave a review but following my visit to Art Zoo today, I feel compelled to. It was just the most fantastic experience - the absolute highlight of my trip! The artists have an incredible eye and passion for beautiful taxidermy. The settings in which the items are placed are beautiful and really enhanced the artworks. Combined with the gorgeous location and subtle lighting, the result is a living masterpiece. The self guided tour was the perfect length and meant we felt we got the most out of our visit. Understanding the context in which the artists wanted us to view the works and spotting details that you wouldn’t otherwise have seen. We bought a ticket on arrival and it felt very reasonably priced for the experience. We were walking around at a leisurely pace and didn’t feel as though there were ever more than 2-5 others in a room with us - felt like a hidden gem! The staff were lovely and very helpful. There’s also a beautiful garden cafe for you to enjoy a drink and a toastie after your tour. Highly recommend a visit for anyone interested in art, the natural world, animals, history, and of course, taxidermy. Thank you to the artists, museum directors, and Art Zoo staff for this magical experience.
It was a fun experience, the audio guide gets you into the atmosphere and sets the vibe for the tour, it added a lot of additional information that I personally think adds a lot of context to the tour. Also helps you reflect on the current biodiversity landscape.
This was a wonderfull experience. A beautiful museum/ art instalation with taxidermy that will make your jaw drop! If you're a curiosity appreciator or just a nature enthusiast just like me, you will love this! The building is full of history, the art pieces (because taxidermy is art) are a delight to see, and don't miss out the bar and the beautiful interior garden!
Beautiful space. The house and space is amazing. The exposition is rather small. Beautiful cafe outside. But just like any other cafe in the Netherlands, nothing exciting to serve. Mediocre, unimaginative “menu” and desserts. At the place like this it should have been much more elevated. It is not that difficult.
I will leave it to the Museum’s website to describe what this brilliant, small museum brings to the table. If you love animals, art or history, then this museum is for you. Sick of the queues and push and shove that comes standard with larger museums or churches? If so, please spend an hour or so at this hidden gem in comfort. I found it incredibly moving. Recommend for people who care about our voiceless animals, with whom we share the planet.
Zoo in the form of art is a concept that I personally loved a lot. As someone who is getting into taxidermy, Art Zoo Museum is an absolute inspiration!
Beautiful small museum in authentic canal house. One of A kind, loved it!!
Extraordinary experience! The audio makes it a very special experience, sharing the story of behind these original 'wonder rooms'. Its a short visit so make most of the beautiful garden and sea shell 'grotto' Bar Varsari
Really nice museum! I visited with my daughter (9) and she loves it as well. Very interesting how they displayed the animals, the buildings itself is amazing too! We had a great afternoon! I totally recommend this place!
This is a must see in Amsterdam, what an amazing presentation and what a fresh inspiring way to show all beautiful creatures in the animal world. So well done! High level presentation 🫶
The museum is beautifully curated and presented. Every exhibit is weirdly fabulous and every room reveals a new wonder. The building is amazing; just wandering through this lovely canal house is worth the visit. The included audio device was excellent and much better that the headset devices used by the major museums.
Remarkable artistic work. Breathtaking 17th century mansion. The self guided tour with audio was exceptional.
This museum wasn’t like anything I’d seen before. It’s definitely worth taking the time to go through slowly to appreciate the details.
The curation of this niche museum is exquisite and definitely a welcome escape from a busy day. The audio tour is very well written and produced, allowing you to use your imagination with the creatures around you. Stunning place.
It’s a wonderful place. The old grandeur of the canalhouse itself is worth visiting, the beautiful and extraordinary exhibition of the animals is true art. Colorful and a natural fit in the building. And it takes max an hour or so. Supreme coffee available in their own Bar Vasari.
Very unique experience! Loved the guided tour. Beautiful exhibit
Great museum ! Surprising art very original with als humor in a beautiful old building in pristine condition. Comes also with a cafe and a beautiful terras.
Incredible exhibition and well narrated via the audio guide
Definitely a unique experience, an eye opening view on taxidermy and the importance of conservation, spectacular displays and an easy listening commentary. Well worth a visit.
I booked this for my 12 year old daughter and I after seeing it on Tripadvisor. Didn't think much of it but once inside it's amazing! Anything with dinosaurs does it for me anyway! Seriously you need to visit this place!
Very beautiful and unique experience suitable for the entire family with snall children activity included ! Very friendly staff. 100% recommended!
A beautiful arty display of taxidermy and nature. Presented in an amazing building to immerse you in a huge piece of art. High standards throughout with effective audio tour and a lovely cafe at the end while you relax and enjoy the artwork around you ( made up of shells). It was a wonderful experience and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves art and nature.
Absolutely loved this museum! The atmosphere and the creativity of the museum are amazing - it's alive and playful. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the layout of the exhibits makes the whole experience feel like a journey.
Fantastic experience. Really interesting for young and old foggies. Very cool building. Well presented everything. Loved it.
Highly recommended, very nice set up with audio tour. We really enjoyed it, perfect museum for young and old. Great new museum for Amsterdam.
The experience was amazing as someone who loves nature and learning everything and anything about nature the art zoo was the perfect mixture of artistic expression and education without the pressure of having to know anything about the exhibits pr who the artist behind them were. Each piece on display had its own unique characteristics and brought something new to experience
This was the most unusual experience. Appreciated the talent of both artists and presented beautifully. Thank you for a most enjoyable visit!
It’s a unique experience—like nothing else I’ve ever visited before. It feels like a blend of the old anatomy museum of comparative animal science I used to study in, and the most exquisite artistic vision and touch. The light in the chambers is just fantastic; every little detail seems so thoughtfully designed. There is beauty everywhere. The house itself is immensely beautiful. It feels like being inside a work of art—absolutely jaw-dropping.
I’m not sure I have the words to honour the artistry and messaging that exists within this museum. We came across it randomly, while looking for an alternative to visiting the zoo in Amsterdam. On paper, it was very appealing. But I cautiously wondered if it might be an Instagram trap wrapped up in very brilliant marketing. So, I checked that other search engine’s reviews. I can honestly say, this is the first time I’ve been sold on something based on a negative review. Not because of what that reviewer said, but because of how thoughtful, insightful, and considerate the museum’s response was. As soon as we walked through the front doors, we knew the experience was going to be special. Our animal-loving, environmentally-conscious 8-yr old human was enthralled, and this has become a highlight to our trip. Take your time. Listen to the audio tour. Watch the documentary. “if everyone were cast in the same mould, there would be no such thing as beauty.” -Charles Darwin
Loved it. I volunteer in San Francisco at the Academy of Sciences that houses many live animals, taxadermic animals, skeletons and a large aquarium. I will share my experience of your museum upon my return home.
A beautiful canal house on the Herengracht. Taxidermy meets Art, wonderful combination. Cozy cafe area and outdoors.
We visited the museum in September 2025. We were deeply impressed by the beautiful collection , both the immediate visual impact and the story conveyed through the exhibits are truly captivating and engaging. An absolute must-see! Finally, a visit to the museum bar, and especially the city garden, is also well worth it.
A wonderful experience in a lovely house. Workers they’re friendly and helpful. Patio outside in a very nice garden. They have a friendly cat also
It was an amazing experience, all the staff was really nice, and the artwork left me speechless. It was an amazing opportunity as a drawing exercise (speaking as an artist myself).
A new museum on the heart of Amsterdam. Exhibits beautifully displayed. Quirky yet inviting and interesting. Lovey cafe and a stunning terrace. Fun for the whole family. The setting is as it day a zoo. This is taxidermy meets 3D art at its best . Well worth the visit. Highly recommend it . Located on the Herengracht. Don’t miss out on this stunning museum when visiting Amsterdam.
Wonderfull museum or better ‘wunderkamer’. Really beautiful work, craftsmanship in a spectacular setting. If you really watch al the animals and settings you can spend much more time then the museum itself advises. Much respect for the artists, their dedication and presentation of the work. Unique in the world. Watch the movie in the museum to understand the motivations of the artists.
A truly outstanding museum, located right in the heart of the city. It’s a must-visit for everyone — incredibly well-organized, full of rich content, and beautifully designed.
An unforgettable museum experience—just as promised, our jaws truly dropped. Think Banksy meets taxidermy (no animals harmed, don’t worry). All set in a stunning 17th-century building. Bold, bizarre, and brilliant. A must-visit!
