Itinerary
Explore Amsterdam's popular Red Light District neighborhood and learn about the district's history as well as the coffee shop culture in Amsterdam on this 2.5-hour historical walking tour. Your knowledgeable local guide will provide you with an educational insight on Amsterdam's Red Light District and coffee shop culture. Learn about Dutch law and how prostitution is legal and marijuana is tolerated.
The dam, Also known as the City built on trees: Due to the soil in Amsterdam consisting of a thick layer of fen and clay, some buildings in the city are built on wooden poles that are fixed in a sandy layer that is approximately 11 meters deep. Since the old days, the houses in Amsterdam were known to have been built on wooden foundation piles that are driven deep into the clay, peat, and water until they reach the first layer of solid sand.
The area is a part of the Red Light District, tob e specific, part of the Old Town area. So this is the oldest part of the city that is why there is a lot of history as well.
Pub The Ape, also known as Int Aepjen in Dutch. Built around 1540 and one out of two remaining wooden buildings left in Amsterdam. Which is very special as there was a big fire in 1452 and after that point the government decided that buildings should have brick facades.
The Waag used to be one of the city gates of Amsterdam, a part of the defensive wall. It was built around the 1400s and is the second oldest building of Amsterdam. Later on it was used as a guild, craftsman’s organizations, situated themselves within the Waag and around the square.
The smallest house of Amsterdam was built around the 1700s and was first used as storage place for the VOC trading company. Later on people started living in the house for a very long time.
The Condomerie, This is the world’s first condom shop special for condoms, in place here since 1987. You can get a size customized condom and all kinds of special condoms.

Amazing and very informative tour .. Robin was great and very knowledgeable and friendly.. we all had a good time
Great first night with Andrea , who shared in depth of the area. She was patient and friendly. Weather was bad with rain hitting us shortly after starting, and she had an umbrella for me which is really very nice of her, kickstarting a great experience in Amsterdam
Though the guide was very informative he took us to a touristy coffee shop and a ridiculously touristy sex shop (lingerie, sex toys, etc. ). Where prices were ridiculously high compared to other similar stores. We left the group half way during the tour.
Excellent Tour Despite the Rain! Despite the soaking rain, this tour was one of the highlights of our time in Amsterdam. Our guide, Robin, did a fantastic job explaining the unique story of Dutch tolerance, the history and evolution of the Red Light District, and the role coffee shops play in Amsterdam's culture. What could have been a controversial topic was presented in a thoughtful, educational, and respectful way. Robin was knowledgeable, engaging, and had a great sense of humor. We especially enjoyed the insider information and local perspectives he shared about Amsterdam and Dutch society. He brought the city to life and helped us understand the history and culture behind what many visitors only see on the surface. Even with the rain, we stayed engaged from start to finish and learned far more than we expected. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Amsterdam. If you're fortunate enough to have Robin as your guide, you're in for an informative, fascinating, and memorable experience. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We had a great time on this tour. It was our first day in Amsterdam and the perfect way to learn about this amazing city.
Had a good time , Got to know a lot about the place and in general about the city . Our tour guide Brian was knowledgeable and took time to explain multiple sites during the tour walk.
Terrible experience, guide missed out loads of attractions from the published itinerary. 4 of the 6 stops were missed out. The tour was scheduled for 120 minutes it was cut short by 45 minutes. The guide spent 20; minutes advising us on drugs. When in the red light area we were advised that if anybody in authority questions us we must say we are not on a tour, this made us feel nervous. For the first time in all the years of using viator I have had to make a formal complaint. All our other excursions in Amsterdam were excellent.
Robin was a fantastic guide, lots of interesting snippets of information. He was very friendly and even gave us some great suggestions for places to eat. Would really recommend this tour.
Mauricio was excellent! Very well informed, excellent English and super funny. I highly recommend this tour. It was insightful and a good background into the history of the red light district and the city.
Ben, our tour guides was fantastic! He gave great historical background of the District, how it has evolved and insider information about the status of the district today. Very interesting and informative!
Ari was a great tour guide and very knowledgeable about the history and social/political background of the region. I appreciated the context and his openness to answer questions while respecting those working in the area.
Had a great time learning the history of the red light district. We started at a coffee shop and learned the history and etiquette which was very helpful. Then stopped at a few bars and ended in the red light district. Great tour!!
Arree took us through the history and background info on the Red Light district. How things work and what it is like today. Very good approach to a subject that would be controversial.
Got here before dark and was guided through the local streets and alleys. Loved the history and culture. Definitely had to light up a local joint and smoke in the streets. Very freeing lol. Can't do that in California. We need more of gedogen and gedoogbeleid, and less police state. Ben led us and was very informative. Not boring in the least. He worried he was to talkative, but that is what I paid for.
This was a great tour for old and young. It was an in-depth tour and education about the history of this part of Amsterdam. Our guide Robin made the tour so much fun with some great recommendations for other places to visit.
Aarre was an excellent guide, making our tour not only informative but enjoyable. Thank you very much
Ben, our guide was very knowledgeable and fun, however, we only visited one coffee shop and just walked around the red light district with very little activity going on during the early evening, I assume that’s because it’s too crowded at night to have a tour guide and the city doesn’t allow a tour guide in the area anyway. It was pretty terrible weather raining cats and dogs not Ben‘s fault
The tour was awesome! We had Ben and he was wonderful! Super knowledgeable and very entertaining. He made the tour so fun and also gave all kinds of recommendations. I highly recommend this tour and having Ben as your guide. Also, I want to mention we originally were supposed to go on the 8pm private tour, but were unable due to travel issues. Luckily they were able to get us on this group tour with the late notice and even though we only had Saturday night availability. They also gave us an Anne Frank walking tour. We really appreciated the fact that they accommodated us and both tours were great.
Brian was a knowledgeable and charismatic tour guide. He portrayed the history of the red light district up to the present day with sensitivity and humor when appropriate.
Very informative and interesting would definitely recommend it to friends. Aarre was a fabulous tour guide
Very informative about Amsterdam history. We saw more than just the red light district, all in the same central area.
It’s not a canal tour. It’s about drugs and sex in Amsterdam. Guess I didn’t read the description very well. We didn’t complete the tour.
A lot of fun facts , good stories, and great people watching. Ari has a great sense of humor and presents a fun side of the city.
the tour guide was fantastic, the guys name I don’t remember but he is from Detroit in the USA, I will recommend him anytime.
We loved this. robin was a great guide with lots of knowledge and care for us. A great way to learn about the history and culture. Fantastic way to experience the red light district
Our tour guide Kathi was extremely knowledgeable about Amsterdam ‘s history and the behind the scenes of the sex district and industry overall. It was a pleasure to listen to her as she patiently dealt with the large group. She made the night greater than we anticipated. My husband was not looking forward initially to another tour, since we’ve had bad experiences before. But we absolutely loved this one! Highly recommend.
Definitely recommend. Was great to walk the Red light district and learn the history and how it all works. Ben was a great guide.
You can truly customize your tour with the private guide and go at your own pace. Perfect for someone that might walk a bit slower
Aarre was an outstanding guide! His personal stories and insights added a lot to what would have been a standard script. The small size of the group was manageable and it was easy to stay together in the crowded streets. Learned a lot about the past, present, and future of the Red Light District!
Loved our tour guide Ben. Very knowledgeable and enjoyed his lighthearted energy. I never got bored.
A welcoming tour of the RLD and coffehouse culture with great humour and interesting facts along the way.
Andrea was fantastic, extremely friendly, kind and accommodating to our needs. She was very knowledgeable about the history and shared great information with us. We greatly enjoyed her and our tour!
This is an in depth education on how the red light district came to be the thing it is today. It’s not for the faint of heart though, it’s raw and it’s real, for better or for worse. Our tour guide, Andrea, was quite knowledgeable, very friendly, patient with our questions and thorough with her answers.
My adult daughter and I both enjoyed this tour. Robyn was very informative not only about the red light district but also the history of Amsterdam.
Interesting history of the Red Light District. Our guide gave an informative tour and tailored the tour to our interests. She delivered the information in a thoughtful way.
Kevin was an incredibly knowledgeable, easy going and friendly guide. It was an excellent tour. Highly recommend it.
Great tour! We went on our first night in Amsterdam and I'm glad we did because Aarre gave us great insight into the customs and culture of the area. He was a funny and knowledgeable guide, he kept the tour feeling like friends hanging out and learning a bit of history. Was the museum worth the extra money?.... I'm not sure. It was still fun though!
This was one of the highlights of our time in Amsterdam! We got lucky because our group was very small, which made the experience feel much more personal. Aarre was an incredible guide—fun, engaging, and extremely knowledgeable. He shared fascinating historical context about Amsterdam and the Red Light District while also pointing out places and details we never would have noticed on our own. He had great recommendations for places to visit after the tour as well. What really stood out was how he tailored the tour to what we wanted to see and learn about instead of following a rigid script. If you're looking for a Red Light District tour that's informative, entertaining, and feels personal, I highly recommend booking with Aarre specifically!
The highlight of this tour was our guide Maurice! Such an entertaining character who seemed to know so many locals on the way (including a couple of the red light district workers). He was a very knowledgeable guide and was happy to answer many questions. I was a bit hesitant to take this tour as I am a female senior but never felt uncomfortable at all. Thanks for a memorable experience Maurice.
This is the best and most informative tour I've even been on. Ben was amazing. He'll tell and show you the real Red Light District. This is a must-do in Amsterdam.
Ben was so knowledgeable and hilarious! Loved his candid facts and stories. Great tour and guide! We would highly recommend
Great stories about the District … fun and informative. Our Guide,Robin, spoke good English and paced the tour well.
I had 2 other Amsterdam guides, and they didn’t even come close to Robin’s tour! Robin was so knowledgeable and shared detailed stories about the history and culture of each place we walked to. You could tell he loves his city and his job. At one unexpected part of the tour, there was a woman who had overdosed. Robin ran to a nearby pub and gave her a Coca Cola and she got her color back. He handled that moment so professionally. The tour was a highlight for me in Amsterdam, don’t book with anyone else! Www.robinsamsterdam.com
Katie was a perfect guide for this experience given her well rounded knowledge of both the red light district and the coffee shops. We walked away with myths busted, and an appreciation for how well organized and protected both industries are in the Netherlands.
This was very interesting and well worth it. Ben was very knowledgeable and very interesting in the facts he shared with us. This is a must do tour.
Left the ‘tour’ 50 minutes in! What an absolute joke. This was - walk 10 steps, stop for 15 minutes and listen to the tour guide ramble on about history. Repeat, repeat, repeat. We left and decided to do our own tour. Waste of money!
Our tour guide Ben was amazing and very knowledgeable. If you are from the US and plan on making purchases from coffeehouses bring euros.
It was overrated. Didn’t know guides were not allowed to walk with us along red light district. Had a commentary prior to entering the district. Didn’t go in to see the coffee shop even tho it is part of the tour. Might as well diy
This tour was very good and our tour guide, Esther, was very knowledgeable. She covered everything about the history of the Red Light District and Amsterdam as a whole. We were part of a group of 8 people and everyone was friendly. It was an awesome tour!
