Great way to get to some local foods that you likely wouldn’t venture to try (or find) on your own. Highly recommended.
We had an excellent tour with Christa! Many small bites; excellent bits of history and points to see; and in the end she helped us find a spectacular Indonesian restaurant (Indrapura) for dinner! Would highly recommend this tour!
Elsie took us on an amazing tour of the open air market. We sampled many Dutch treats including an assortment of cheeses, street food and perhaps the best stroopwafel in the Netherlands. We had plenty of time to enjoy each of the stops and were never rushed. Elsie also took special attention to foods that we did not prefer so the tour was really tailored to our tastebuds!
We loved that we got to try many Amsterdam treats but also cuisine from countries we had never tried before. Olga, our guide, was very knowledgeable and knew where to find Amsterdam’s hidden treasures.
Our food tour guide Arunabha was amazing! Every food item tasted great (definitely opt for the 10 tastings), the beer choice was some of the best beer I've ever had, and the tidbits of history we got (both food and city related) were intriguing. Arunabha also gave us great restaurant recommendations (ask him for his Indonesian pick), specific directions to activities we were planning to do later in the day, and also made a quick pit spot to help pick up a item someone in our party wanted to get!
Out guide Arunahba was very knowledgeable and informative. I enjoyed trying different foods. We had a great time
Great one on one time with Olga. Very informative and the food was great! She also shared fun historical facts along the way.
I was expecting more than walking through a open market Obviously food purveyors can be located close to each other but directly across meant why should one take a guided tour
Martin was an excellent guide who shared his knowledge of culture and flavors of Amsterdam. He was also kind and helped one of our friends find her iPhone. He spoke with the driver who had found her phone who kindly brought the phone to our hotel, after the phone had a small tour of the Netherlands.
HE is The Best BEST tour guide in ANY country Any city! There’s no way to say more! Whatever u want to see or know or do or EAT He’s the right guide to show u ! And educate u with a familiar dialogue!! The experience was made to order Also! You can hire him to go with u on a train or Bus to another Country also!
Had wonderful time on this tour the guide never made us feel rushed and brought us to a great variety of places. I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves food. It was just my wife and I and it was truly special and more food than we could eat!
Very friendly and knowledgeable guide, the food was interesting, the herring was surprisingly delicious and of course the Bitterballen
Nice way to get acquainted with the city. Meeting place was easy to find, many varied food samples representing the history of Amsterdam, very knowledgeable and informative guide. Highly recommend.
I’ll start by saying our tour began late. I received a call 30 min the tour began, asking if we’d like to select a later time. After I explained to Jess we were already at the meeting point, she said she would be there soon. When Jess arrived, she was friendly but looked extremely disheveled. Every time Jess ordered us a new food to try, she personally ate 60-80% of it. I am not use to a tour guide putting their hands in food I’m sharing with my partner. We already paid for the tour, why are you eating the food and going back for seconds & thirds? This is the 4th food tour I’ve been on. The bar was set high with the other three. Ultimately I wasn’t happy with this tour or the guide at all.
Olga our tour guide was very knowledgeable and accommodating to our tastes. She was on time and a lot of fun.
Mayra was very friendly and personalized our tasting experience. We had a great time learning and exploring with her. Would highly recommend!
The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Amsterdam and the role food plays in that history. We were introduced to a great variety of foods from local market vendors to restaurants. Our guide was able to accommodate our children's likes and dislikes.
After looking forward to an Amsterdam vacation including this tour for more than a year based on great reviews, we were notified by the provider (Amsterdam Withlocals) that our reservation the next day had been cancelled. They offered a replacement the following day but this was our last day in Amsterdam, so no luck. The only explanation offered read "...has been canceled by your host due to some personal matters". Ironically, this note was sent by a person whose title was "Happiness Manager". Sorry, totally unacceptable to all in our group of 4 friends. Yes, a full refund was processed, but I wondered how ofter this happens. Not enough tourists signed up? Only one tour guide who got sick? Viator doesn't routinely offer reviews for tours that aren't taken, so I have to thank their Customer Service rep who allowed me to write this review. Buyer beware.
Arul was very knowledgable and accommodating, the tasting were so good and fast served for our group, this type of tour is highly recommended for foodies
Great way to enjoy the native food & drink while seeing the city! Our guide was very informative and we loved all her selections!
Martin was absolutely fabulous. Very informative!!! Spoke perfect English and answered all our questions.
We had an amazing time with Mayra exploring local street foods. She was very friendly, fun, and a great guide. It was just my husband and I and we had a wonderful time in the market and the surrounding area. I would recommend this tour to anyone new to the city.
Very interesting tour. Our guide was knowledgeable and engaging. Food was diverse and tasty . Highly recommended.
We enjoyed a 3 hour market area tour with Krista. Knowing that some vendors would not be present on the day of our tour, she offered to take us to another area of the city, but we’re glad we stayed at the market. We moved at a relaxed pace and enjoyed learning more about the local food & life in Amsterdam. We were given flexibility in how to spend the portion of the tour fee allocated for food costs, but we primarily followed the guide’s recommendations. We also received many tips on hidden-gems of Amsterdam…I suggest you take this tour early in your trip so you have adequate time to check out some of the recommendations.
Our guide, Martin, was very knowledgeable with the local foods. Martin was very interesting to talk to about the history and political scene of Amsterdam. We could have spent hours eating with him and talking to him. Local foods were very good.
Lovely variety of food experiences, Dutch and international. The Surinamese dishes were exceptional. Finished with some traditional Dutch beer and apple cake, what more could you want? Our guide was friendly and informative. Good history knowledge.
Our guide, Mayra, was a delight and oh so knowledgeable. I’ve been to Amsterdam a number of times and have never tasted it quite like this! We’d recommend this to everyone.
So this was not something we would do again. We could have 100 percent walked the outdoor market and done this on our own. We only did 1 hour and 50 min it says 3 hours and we definitely needed drinks with the tour. So bring a water. We had too many sweet items as well but we could have just done on our own.
Highly recommended if you want to try many delicious foods that will surprise you. We did not know most of these places, and would not have found them without this tour. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable.
I had some spare time in Amsterdam so I booked a tour with Mayra. As I was alone (my wife/mother in law were at the Floriade) I thought it would be good to indulge my enjoyment of food and drink from places I wouldn't usually have found. We walked around the Eastern part of Amsterdam and tried some foods from stalls/cafes that were just great - I would never have found the places alone. Mayra was great company, the conversation was interesting and she managed to find some great food. We ended un in a brewery trying a flight of beers, not all were to my taste but it was great to try them. I would definitely use WithLocals again and I would definitely ask for Mayra as she was great to talk to and found such good places to eat.
The tasting tour was a lot of fun and something out of the ordinary. We went in the afternoon after a museum visit and it was a great change of pace Arun was a great guide and we had a leisurely stroll down the Albert Cuyp market with several stops focused on Dutch food (including one Suriname focused stop). It’s a lot of food so make sure you go hungry. Our tastings included cheese, herring and battered fried cod (Kibbeling), Dutch stroopwafels (thin waffles with layer of caramel), bitteballen (any visit to amsterdam will involve these round croquettes at some point) a couple of Suriname dishes (chicken kabobs. A curry and some fried plantain) and finished off with Dutch apple pie ( and a cold local beer) you will not leave hungry!
What a great tour this morning. The tour mainly stays in the De Pijp area, and we finished toward Rembrantplein. Food offerings were generous - to say the least!! No where does the description say just how much food is offered, and we were full to bursting and couldn’t finish some of it. Very glad we skipped breakfast!!!! A great host who answered any questions we had and introduced us to places we couldn’t have found alone.
Our tour guide Mayra was amazing! She was nice, outgoing, informative, fun, etc. She made the experience fun and relaxing. The food was also amazing and better than any of the other Dutch dishes I tried on my trip.
Christa was a great guide and customized the tour based on what we wanted to do. She also sent us a lot of great recommendations to use during the rest of our time in Amsterdam.
Tour was great. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Had a nice time and would recommend to others. Try everything.
Not to be missed! We did a food tour with Sebastian and he was incredible!! We tried foods we never would have found on our own and found some new favorites! Sebastian is truly exceptional! Surinamese food was a great surprise and now a new favorite!
Absolutely wonderful! The tour really made our break. Christa was knowledgable and friendly 10 out of 10!
Arun gave us a nice overview of various aspects of Dutch cuisine. Bitterballs, herring, apple pie and delicious Suriname food, everything we ate was very tasty. It was great to watch Arun interact with the different people on the tour. These were his friends and it was a pleasure to meet them. Arun is widely read. At the end of our tour he took us to the American Book Store where he introduced us to a number of significant Dutch writers, whose works are available in English. Without reservation, I would recommend this tour to anyone. No one wants to be a tourist and in a city full of them like Amsterdam, Arun made us feel very welcome. Thank you.
I always love tasting foods from different countries. This was no different. However, I do feel this tour was a bit pricey for the amount of tastings/food we got. We only had 6 stops. At three of the six stops we did try two different types of the same food. So that's six tastings. Then at the coffee shop the gave us a mini stroopwafel because the place we were going to stop at was closed. The cheese stop was amazing as there was a huge variety of cheeses to taste. While I really enjoyed the tastes we had, I would have liked a bigger variety and I'm not so sure I would pay $113 again.
Walking through Amsterdam's markets, specialty food shops & stalls sampling many delicious local food items with the utterly delightful, and thoroughly knowledgeable Crista as our guide was a wonderful way to spend a beautiful sunny afternoon! Christa's knowledge of the history and background of so much we viewed passing by lovingly maintained older buildings and sites made this so much more than just a food tour! Being. physically limited and requiring the use of a cane when walking, Crista was extremely considerate of my situation and kept the pace at a level I felt comfortable with, but still making sure we got to experience everything!! We do food tours whenever we travel to new cities worldwide and this one was right up there with the best of them!
We liked visiting the cheese stall and the variety that was offered.. We liked the appetizers and atmosphere of the restaurant.
Guide no showed after we called, emailed, and texted multiple times. Company was prompt to issue refund but it was a big disappointment.
We enjoyed our experience. However, instead of only being in the farmer's market street area, I wish we had visited actual shops and stores. Marten was very knowledgeable but spent quite a lot of time talking about politics and somewhat bashing other countries...including ours.
We had a great local experience in Amsterdam with Sebastian! He was fun, very knowledgeable about so many topics including history and local gems and really made the tour more than just about where to find food. Don’t be afraid to try all the interesting eats, the herring was actually was my favorite! My group was so glad we tried this tour and we were lucky to snag Sebastian! **please note we took our trip December 2018 - January 2019 just got around to posting out review now! You won’t be disappointed with Sebastian as your food guide. Enjoy & indulge! Cheers!
Laura was a great guide. She was very knowledgeable and attentive to everyone in our group- she even offered me her coat when the weather turned a little chilly. Loved the food experience! Travelled in 2017
Sebastian was a delight. He adapted the tour to suit us. We felt like we made a new friend. We would find Sebastian again for a tour in Amsterdam!
Arum, was a great guide...lots of local knowledge about the town, history and culture...and obviously knew all the great local food spots...felt like a “local” during the tour!
We spent yesterday morning, Saturday 16 February with Mayra. She was really lovey - just like hiring a friend for three hours! Wandering around the markets and streets of Amsterdam tasting food samples was good fun and very enjoyable. As it was just the two of us she was able to tailor the tour which helps make it special. Thank you. Highly recommend Mayra for a tour.
Manu was great. Very informative yet fun. Manu made it easy to ask questions and had a lot of interesting history of the different areas and life in Amsterdam. Definitely would recommend a tour with Manu.
