A good little museum with interesting exhibits. It lasts about 50 mins and so pricey at 18 euros. Probably best to go as part of a museum deal.

Lots of interesting information of building Amsterdam and canals. Nice and compact tour! The "playhouse" with real like interiors was the best part of museum!
Very informative about Amsterdam! The history of the formation is quite educational. Learned a lot of things to appreciate what it is today.
The museum is informative and worth a visit. The museum has an unusual 3D presentation. The presentation is good, but not great. I likely a great deal about the history of the canals.
It is very interesting, explaining the history of the development and the canals of Amsterdam. I highly recommend it.
A spur of the moment visit and was one of the best museums we have ever been to. Modern and well set out. 10/10
The museum is interesting and informative of how the city of Amsterdam was made and built. It also gives a good overview of society life in the 18th and 19th century. It is a good tour and is nice that it does not sell out fast like so many museums in Amsterdam.
Very nicely done, although it’s more of listening to a pre recorded version
What a little gem! We only went as we had time to kill and it's both very interesting and very well done - the audio guide and the models set up in each room are imaginative and engaging. Well done!
Described as a 'multimedia' tour, this is 45 minutes or so of presentations in a variety of inventive styles that explain the history of Amsterdam's canals and the growth of the city. At reception you are given an audio unit in the appropriate language and when a sufficient number of people has assembled you are ushered into the first of a series of connected, darkened rooms. My favourite was the council-chamber reconstruction of the city fathers' 17th century deliberations. You could also stand in the canal, as it were, and watch the buildings going up around you. The final room gave glimpses into the interiors, at historic intervals, of the building that houses the museum and into others along the main canal banks. The audio's lip-service to some contemporary concerns was mildly irritating for being incomplete. Amsterdam's role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade was mentioned only briefly and I can recall no reference to the Dutch East India Company at all. On the other hand elements laid out hundreds of years ago - canalside trees, and the gardens of the houses of the wealthy - were cited in support of the city's green credentials. At €17.50 it's not spectacularly good value, but it's different and some aspects are very well done.
This was a very simplistic, almost childish exhibition. Models of Amsterdam that looked like they were made by high school students were illuminated with lights while we listen to an audio guide. There were two or three rooms with other scale models that were very poorly done. I would not do this activity again.
Little museum with a lot of information. Loved the interactive bits, part way through. Check opening times before heading to the museum.
An interesting and very informative history of Amsterdam and it's canals. Progressing through the rooms with audio and models showing construction methods . Very clever use of projection in the "doll's house".
Informative! Great for history lovers who have been asking themselves about how the city came to be. My only downside would be that it could have gone more in depth into some areas of the city's history, some parts were mentioned and moved past it quickly. Was nice to go here after a couple of days getting to know the city and areas.
This tour was very interesting giving a deep insight into the history of the canals in Amsterdam and the mines around them. Tickets can be paid for or are complimentary with the Amsterdam Card and the tour lasts around 50 minutes. There are several themed books to buy too.
An important museum to see if you want to better understand Amsterdam’s history and how it has evolved over the years. Enjoyed doing this tour near the end of our trip after exploring g the city. The audio self guided tour is 40 minutes and groups start at the same time every few minutes. The tour is cleverly done.
There really is a wheelchair entrance! But you need staff help to get in. The staff were terrifically helpful in getting me around. The exhibits are well thought out, interesting, and varied. I was pleased with my visit and learned a lot.
Worth the visit. Explains history of Amsterdam & how the canals were created & the stages of creating Amsterdam. Very happy I spent the time & money for this visit.
You can never go wrong going to a museum focused on its place/specialty, and in Amsterdam that is definitely the canals! My husband and I both thought that it was so creatively done and a nice break from churches and larger museums. It was bit expensive for its size, but I think it was a small premium to pay for such a well done presentation of the city and its history. Another bonus was that there weren’t huge crowds to fight against either! If Amsterdam’s history interests you, or if you just need a reprieve from all the tourists everywhere else, I recommend a visit!
We enjoyed this tour, the provided audio guide was very informative and easy to use. Not a must do, but a good solid to-do if time allows.
the museum is not very big, but the exhibit is interactive, and educational, I enjoy the visit. You walk through each room following the audio guide, you no need to rush, you can stay for longer time, as long as you want in the rooms to explore every thing, no need to rush to next room. I recommend going there first, then you will know what building you are interested to look at or visit in the subsequent days when you stay in Amsterdam. The admission is not cheap, but worth to visit.
Explained as a Sound and Light show, but disappoints. Information should have been better presented. The animations are very old-style clips made by joining still photographs of small models. Surprising to still find this outdated technique in an audio-visual creativity and technology center like Amsterdam. What little information is presented is generally not reinforced or complemented by the primitive visuals. The canals as a subject is a very good story to tell, but this museum's low-quality visuals fall far short of what could normally be expected in Amsterdam. Especially considering the price of admission. A waste of time with no 'wow' effect.
Wonderful history of Amsterdam - amazing how this city was built and remains standing. Great facility and value.
A great introducrtion to Amsterdam, maybe the best available. You get a short and very effecient presentation of the city and its soul. Engineering, architecture and regular life all gets its share. Some secrets and surprises as well. Very nice way to present everything.
This is not a museum of artifacts. It is an explanation of the building of the city and canals. It was very interesting, more than spouse expected. A variety of mediums are used. The audio tour was very good. It was not crowded.
Nice little museum, very informative with friendly staff. It tells you everything about the ingenious way the canals and their houses were built. (Despite our anti immigration government, Amsterdam was built by immigrants!) Don’t go if your claustrophobic as you are guided through three darkened rooms with audio visual displays. I think the price point is too high for this museum, it's €16,50.
I don't know that I've ever learned less from a single museum. In fact, my intelligence may have dropped 10 points from visiting this museum. In fact, I probably learned more about canals at the cheese museum (which is just a store) than I did at this canal museum, wherein I learned nothing about canals. The staff takes your money, gives you an audio guide, and places you in a room with other guests. You aren't "allowed" to leave the room until the timer ends, and which point you are shuffled into the next room. This goes on for 4 rooms. In each room, there is a narrated presentation that more often celebrates Amsterdam as the greatest city in the world than provides any information about the why or how of the canals. Then, at the end, you are invited to go downstairs to see additional exhibits -- which for us, was inclusive of one art exhibit that proceeded to tell us .... what a tree was. No staff greets you as you leave, presumably because they are tired of people asking for their money back. Terrible. And, more expensive than the Rijksmuseum!
I went here on a whim to get out of the rain and was so glad I did! The museum works via self guided audio tour, but you move along in a little group. I was really surprised how much canal and canal house history was packed in this museum. The exhibits were very engaging and keep me interested the whole time. It’s a little expensive for the length of time you’ll get there (I was in and out in less than an hour), but I think it’s worth doing if it’s included in your museum pass, you’re looking for a less crowded museum, or it’s your first time in Amsterdam.
We had the privilege of visiting this wonderful museum on Sept. 1. It was probably the most enjoyable experience we had on our visit to Amsterdam. I was astounded by the details of the exhibits and learned so much history. The INCLUDED audio tour was excellent, giving us all the time we wanted in each room before moving on to the next. The museum is easily accessible by tram, and is located in a lovely residential neighborhood away from the central bustle of the city. We also were able to enjoy a leisurely walk from there to our next goal, the Rijksmuseum.
City Canal Museum: small, but well-maintained and interactive. Friendly staff. I can not say how much the ticket cost as it was free with the museum card.
Good starting point to understand the history of Amsterdam and how the city came to be. Audio tour with listening devices provided. Nice little garden in the back. Thought the price of admission though was a little steep.
Interesting history of the growth of the city and building of the canals. Also provides a good opportunity to look around a building and gardens on one of the canals.
This museum should be a must see for anyone interested in the history of Amsterdam and it’s canals. The audio (included in admission price) and the exhibits were excellent and made the tour such a worthy experience. Highly recommended
Accessible through multilingual audio guides and interesting
The museum is comprehensive, well explained, with quite unusual and very interesting displays. We are immersed in the history of the canals through the ages, and it personally gave me a new perspective on this unique part of the city while providing answers to questions I had. I highly recommend it if you come to Amsterdam for a weekend. The building blends into the surroundings but is worth the detour.
You walk, in a group, from room to room. So looking at things at your own pace is not one of them. In the spaces, the history of Amsterdam, and in particular the creation of the canal belt, is depicted. Meanwhile, listen to the explanation on the audio device. It's all very fancy and hip, but also rather superficial. I thought it was more of an experience than a museum. The temporary exhibition "Amsterdam, almost demolished" on the bell - floor was small, but in itself nice. I think the price of 18.50 for a ticket is really too high. But fortunately, the museum annual pass is valid.
A small museum that allows us to understand the history of Amsterdam and its construction over time. An exceptional city in many ways. The supports are varied and inclusive: films, models... Maybe a little short for the price.
We were very positively surprised by the design of the canal museum. The audio tour was very exciting and educational. Definitely worth a visit!
If you want to understand the history of Amsterdam and the steps to build the canals, this museum is indispensable. We leave with a feeling of great admiration for this colossal achievement. Unfortunately, however, we cannot stay longer in certain rooms
Mandatory to know the history of Amsterdam and the Netherlands. This should be your first visit to Amsterdam.
Very interesting museum on the construction of Amsterdam and its canals. Several rooms with audio-visual material and an audio guide allow you to fully understand these different steps. You pass in groups every 7 minutes from room to room.
Interactive museum with 5 rooms + audio guide. For all ages. Super instructive. Just taking into account the price for a duration of 50 minutes, it's a bit expensive.
This is another example of how perfectly many Dutch museums have been set up!!! Really great, cool audio tour, nice building and very informative. Highly recommended!
What a very nice museum about the canals and houses in Amsterdam. Really fantastic and accessible done. Absolutely suitable for children. Don't look boring pictures but the exhibition is brought alive. I am so happy with my museum annual pass.
The museum annual pass will take you somewhere you would normally walk past. Super nice museum where it goes slightly different than usual. I won't give anything away, but just go and experience this sometime when you're in Amsterdam
Very well made and maintained museum that explains the growth of the city of Amsterdam. Beautiful garden. The well-made audio guide. Recommended
