Itinerary
Any trip to Amsterdam should include a visit to the Jewish Museum. This museum, housed in four monumental synagogues, offers a unique look at Jewish life in the Netherlands past and present in all its complexity. The museum has a large multimedia collection ranging from paintings to films and from everyday objects to 3D presentations and always offers one or two temporary exhibitions.
Inside the Jewish Museum is another museum, just for children! the Jewish Museum junior is set up as a Jewish family home with six rooms, where children aged 6 to 12 can play games that will teach them about Jewish culture – sometimes seriously and sometimes with humour. Children can bake rolls in the kosher kitchen, learn Hebrew in the study or make music together in the music room.
In the centre of the Jewish Cultural Quarter stands the magnificent Portuguese Synagogue. The building is still used as a house of worship, but it is also open to the public, and concerts are held there regularly. The 17th-century interior is still fully intact and illuminated by hundreds of candles. The other buildings in the complex include treasure chambers where visitors can admire a unique collection of ceremonial objects made of silver, gold, silk and brocade.

The Jewish community in Amsterdam has a long and illustrious history dating back at least to the late 1400s when Sephardic Jews from Portugal and Spain sought refuge from the Inquisition. This handsome museum is dedicated to making information about the community accessible to residents of The Netherlands as well as visitors to the country. The museum is on the site of 4 former synagogues and highlight collections based on 4 themes: Traditions and customs, religious holidays, daily life and history of the local Jewish people. The scope of information and material will certainly open your eyes and probably your heart. My group of 3 tourists from California joined several other people from the US for a tour led by local guide extraordinaire, Naomi Koopmans. We spent an hour at the neighboring Portuguese Synagogue followed by 2+ hours at the museum. You can literally spend a day at the museum. One of the highlights was a walk through the Holocaust Memorial outside the building. There’s plenty of room to sit and contemplate the lives of local residents lost to the madness of the Nazis. Every city should be as fortunate as Amsterdam to have an institution as worthwhile as this Jewish Museum.
So well done and the audio companion is amazing. Leave yourself 3-4 hours for both museum and synagogue
A beautiful arranged Museum with many of Van Gogh paintings were not available to us! The flow and the care for this unique artist was incredible in the museum. A memorable experience for life time!
they have worked hard so that the buildings are wheelchair accessible, but most of the exhibits are NOT!. They have benches in front of cases or computer screens which totally blocked off access for me in my wheels. If you are a wheelchair user, skip this! Just too frustrating.
Very interesting and informative visit on customs and history of the Jews in Amsterdam. We enjoyed seeing the various sections of the museum and all the displays.
The entry ticket of €22 allows you entry to the magnificent Portuguese Synagogue and then over the road the Museum. The main exhibition was entitled Sex The Jewish Position. To me as a secular Jew it was an eye-opener.It explained problems that I experienced in a long relationship with an Orthodox Jewess.. The rest of the museum was much like many others I have visited. However for me the exhibition was special particularly as it reminded me of my late girlfriend.
It was interesting here the history of Jews in Amsterdam and how they lived there. I would definitely recommend friends to go .
Very interesting and education, but at the same time very sad. Well laid out exhibition with audio on a couple of levels. Staff very helpful and friendly. Well worth a visit
The depth and breadth of the Jewish experience in Amsterdam and beyond is creatively presented in 3 floors, including the synagogue that became a safe place to learn more of this history. It really helped that the museum wasn’t so busy during our visit on Monday, so we were able to go deeper into the many offerings… it’s set up for an intimate exploration which we were fortunate to have on this day. The live interviews (returning from the camps and present day thoughts on being Jewish), stories, photos and artifacts from this rich complex history are impactful especially after walking around this fascinating city. We spent five hours here. Learned so much and appreciate all that was put into this interwoven experiential journey. You could come for a lot less time. … it was a lot to assimilate. The ticket is good for a week and includes entrance to the Portugese Synagogue/museum across the street.
The museum building is actually the old Ashkenazi synagogue. This gives an authentic experience as you move through the different eras of the Jewish community in Amsterdam. There are moving real life stories from survivors of WWII but the museum doesn't just focus on the Holocaust, there are some fascinating facts about the Jewish way of life in general. Tickets to this museum will also get you into the Portuguese synagogue just across the road. The Jewish museum is next to the Holocaust memorial where you can find Anne (Anneliese) Frank's stone alongside her sister and mother.
Whether you are Jewish or not this is worth a visit. Take time to read the personal stories and learn about the Jewish culture in Amsterdam and throughout the Netherlands. The holocaust museum and name monument are also within a 15 minute walk.
My husband & I toured and found it interesting. Liked that with your ticket purchase you got the audio to learn about the exhibits & entrance to the synagogue across the street. Unfortunately they were doing some construction, a bit noisy near the gift shop area & entrance. Definitely worth going to.
Great exhibits and cute café Portuguese synagogue was fabulous. A rich history was well preserved and documented despite the horrors of the Holocaust. Must do in Amsterdam = for everyone
Lots of historical information about Jewish history and also items of use within the Jewish religious traditions. Really good little video clips of real people telling their story. Free entry into the Portuguese synagogue too which was also interesting to see.
learned many interesting facts I did not know. Brought to life many I already heard. Interesting and enlightening. Woth your time to learn more and more about this period of time.
It's important to remember when you visit museums that the Jewish people in Amsterdam are more than the Holocaust. This is not a Holocaust museum, but rather a vibrant look into continued Jewish life in Amsterdam. It was especially interesting to visit the synagogue and learn about Jewish life, laws, and the parts of a Jewish service. There was an especially moving exhibit where modern day Dutch Jews spoke about the Holocaust and what Jewish life means to them in relation to the Holocaust and generational trauma. We used I AMSTERDAM card Walk across the street to the Portuguese Synagogue included in the ticket price. No food small gift shop nice bathrooms lockers to store bags elevators - handicap accessible audio guide
This was really good and very informative, taking in complete history of Judaism in Holland and impact of society right up to present day. Well worth the visit
a lovely worthwhile stop to see the beautiful artifacts. Very nice exhibit and activity for children. excellent cafe.
Was a really informative museum with nicely laid out artificats. Plenty of rooms to go in and out of. I learnt plenty and reminded myself of things I’d forgotten.
I spent over an hour at the Portuguese Synagogue. The recreation of the Great Synagogue and all the interactive displays were superb.
Expected a walking tour, but told by 2 people we weren't on their list! Museum & synagogue were wonderful, but very disappointed with Viator
The museum was very interesting and well presented. We spent more time in it than we had Intended because it was so interesting.
What a beautiful way to learn about Jewish history, religion and culture. Wish there was a little more about WW2 but I also understand that it’s more than WW2. There was a lot I didn’t know. Combining this with a visit to the synagogue was very impressive for me!
It was a beautiful experience. Reconnecting with my past is something that is priceless, and this museum made it possible.
You pay 17€ for entrance and it includes the beautiful portugese synagogue. This museum has an incredible children section with a lot of crafts, music room, challah baking activity, VR and more. My son was so happy and asked to comeback everyday :) it is very interactive and informative for children and adults :))
Superb visit. Covering history, culture, including Jewish food tasting, contemporary Dutch Jewish life, Israel, religion and religious festival. Friendly, welcoming staff. Also a visit to the Portuguese synagogue included.
Wonderful museum covering the history of Jews in Amsterdam, from the early 1600s to the present day. The museum is housed in the old Ashkenazi synagogue and features objects, videos, and artwork showcasing the history of the Jewish people in Amsterdam. Very education and touches upon the WHOLE story of a very diverse Jewish community. The staff were incredibly nice and audio guides were provided free of charge.
This is an excellent museum and experience. The displays are interesting and informative. The staff are very helpful. Combine this with a visit to the nearby Portuguese synagogue and Holocaust Memorial. One ticket covers the museum and the synagogue (the memorial is accessible to the public at any time). It makes for an excellent half day in Amsterdam.
i was overcharged please refound the amount payed The ticket is included with the sinagogue ticket and I foun out same time at the sinagiogue no time to call
The Jewish History Museum was great with lots of old documents and portraits of life when the Jews and the Pilgrims were in Holland to escape religious persecution. There were good sections showing religious and civil/social life up to post-World war 2. However, I bought tickets as a part of a package to include the Portuguese synagogue, hoping to compare it to the Budapest one. The synagogue was closed for the week. We were told there would be a partial refund, but later could not find the phone number. I tried to contact Viator but got no reply. So the museum was great, with subtle but excellent use of technology, but the vending was not. I would be happy to edit this review.
Well done museum with a lot of information dating back to the time of the Inquisition. Not only were the displays well done, the building incorporates the old great synagogue. Very informative.
Fantastic museum! I learned so much about the history of Jews in Amsterdam and about Jewish life in general. The materials are beautifully displayed and well described with lots of audio and visual support.
The synagogues were wonderful to see. Everyone was very nice, and we learned a lot about the Jewish experience in Amsterdam.
Great place to visit. Sadly we didn't give ourselves enough time but despite arriving a 4.15pm we still had time to enjoy the VR headset in the children's museum and spend some time reading about our Dutch ancestors. Most of what we saw related to the period around WW2, it would have been lovely to see something from much older times if it is available. The staff were very friendly and helpful too
Important history for people to know. Moving stories and information about a community, its struggles and survival. Especially relevant in today's world.
Worthwhile to see. We went through the museum backwards as there was no “Start Here” sign, just a flight of stairs that went up and down. It was a bit confusing but had many interactive videos to sit and watch which gave our feet a break.
I had a good experience in this museum and the staff was lovely! :)) They explained me what I needed. Also, the exposition has a lot of interesting information.
Learning how the Dutch people assisted Jews during the Holocaust. The guide was extremely informative.
Daniel was excellent! He went above and beyond to make our tour tailored and interesting. Highly informative, passionate and funny. We couldn’t have asked for a better welcome to Amsterdam, Anne Frank and WW2 history!
Behind the walls protecting this iconic synagogue is a treasure waiting to behold. The architecture, religious artifacts, and history are everywhere you look. The synagogues members required that members solely do business with its own members to ensure that businesses owned by their Jewish cohorts would flourish. The enclosure around this synagogue holds meeting rooms, smaller chapels and a museum of beautiful silver treasures. This place is not to be missed.
I only had time for the Jewish museum and the Portuguese Synagogue. Both had self guided audio tours. The guides are excellent!! You can’t go wrong. FYI the Portuguese Synagogue opens at 10 while the others open at 11. Therefore, if you only have one day- start at the Portuguese Synagogue.
Excellent self guided tour. It was a very informative tour about the Jewish history of Amsterdam with plenty of interactive programs available to view.
This exhibition has so much to see that some hours are needed to see all that is on offer. Definitely worth a visiti.

This was alright - very different than I imagined and the self guide tour was boring.

The self-guided tour was great. It allowed me to see sites at my own pace and it was very educational. There was additional information provided by brochures about the Jewish quarter that also was very helpful. Amsterdam is a beautiful, friendly city that doesn't seem as affected as other european cities by xenophobia and illogical behavior. The price for the ticket was extremely reasonable.

You need to allow for at least 4 hours to see many of the fascinating exhibits. There are three main areas. The cafeteria soup was outstanding.

The tour was very good the only hang up was that the Starting Point of the Tour was not clearly indicated in the documents provided and even the local people near the point did not recognize the address.

Seen and viewed everything here. You gained a great insight into Jewish culture, people and customs. You may already know several things, but it all comes together in a beautiful building. Lots to see, really worth it
