A rather boring and wasteful experience. Took the captain 5 minutes to work out the audio wasn’t working. Not a lot of sights to be identified unless hotels and a casino

Itinerary
Lovers Canal Cruises began offering boat tours in Amsterdam in the 1950s, becoming one of the city's most popular ways to explore its historic canals. With a fleet of glass-roofed boats, the company provides scenic and narrated cruises showcasing Amsterdam's architecture, bridges, and waterways.
The Central Station in Amsterdam was designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers and constructed between 1881 and 1889 on three artificial islands in the IJ lake. Its Gothic/Renaissance Revival style and iron platform roof reflect both historical grandeur and modern engineering of the time.
The Magere Brug, or "Skinny Bridge," is a historic wooden drawbridge over the Amstel River in Amsterdam, originally built in 1691 and rebuilt in 1934 in the same traditional style. Known for its elegant design and nightly illumination, it has become one of the city's most iconic and photographed bridges.
The Keizersgracht, named after Emperor Maximilian I, was constructed in 1612 as the widest of the main canals in Amsterdam's canal belt, showcasing grand merchant houses and reflecting the city's growing wealth.
The Herengracht, also dug in 1612, was the most prestigious canal, home to the city's elite and lined with stately mansions known as the “Golden Bend.”
The Prinsengracht, one of Amsterdam’s main canals, was dug in the early 17th century during the city’s major expansion known as the Grachtengordel project. Named after the Prince of Orange, it became a desirable residential area, lined with elegant canal houses and cultural landmarks.
Amsterdam’s Red Light District, known locally as De Wallen, is the city’s oldest neighborhood, dating back to the 14th century when it served as a harbor area. Today, it’s a regulated zone combining historic buildings, legalized sex work, and a mix of tourism, nightlife, and cultural heritage.
The Westerkerk in Amsterdam, completed in 1631, is a prime example of Dutch Renaissance architecture and is famous for its tall, ornate tower known as the Westertoren. It has played a significant role in the city’s religious and cultural life, and is also famously near Anne Frank’s house.
The 9 Straatjes (Nine Streets) in Amsterdam is a charming neighborhood of nine narrow streets in the canal belt, known for its unique boutiques, vintage shops, and cozy cafés. Developed in the 17th century, it has become a trendy area blending historic charm with modern culture.
The Amstel River runs through Amsterdam and was central to the city’s founding and development, giving the city its name. It has historically been a vital waterway for trade and transport, lined with iconic bridges and historic buildings along its banks.
The Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam, housed in a historic 17th-century warehouse, showcases the rich maritime history of the Netherlands with a vast collection of ships, maps, and nautical artifacts. Renovated in 2011, it offers engaging exhibitions highlighting the country’s connection to the sea.
NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, opened in 1997 with its iconic green, ship-like structure rising above the Oosterdok. It serves as an interactive science and technology center, especially geared toward children and families, promoting hands-on learning and curiosity.
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam was designed by architect Pierre Cuypers and officially opened in 1885, blending Gothic and Renaissance elements to house the Netherlands’ national art and history collection. It holds masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and other Dutch masters, making it a cultural landmark of international renown.
The Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam emerged in the 17th century as a bustling public square, built on the site of the former city wall after the demolition of the Sint Antoniespoort. Its centerpiece, the Waag building, originally served as a city gate and later as a guildhall, anchoring the square's historical and social importance.
The Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam was established in 1862 and is the world’s only floating flower market, with stalls set on houseboats along the Singel canal. Originally created to supply fresh flowers daily by boat, it has since become a colorful tourist attraction selling bulbs, souvenirs, and plants.
Het IJ is a body of water and former bay in Amsterdam that connects the city to the North Sea, playing a crucial role in its maritime trade and development. Today, it serves as a vibrant waterfront area with ferries, cultural venues, and recreational activities.

Our boat was full and we were looked after very well by our female captain who. When audio had a gap she provided great local knowledge and brought us back safely after hour enjoyable cruise.
We really enjoyed this trip. It was nice that the boat was enclosed since it rained during our tour.
This was a great way to see Amsterdam from a different perspective. Informative and enjoyable. The crew were courteous.
Great experience and tour guide was funny
First class Captain, name of Peter, who steered the boat exceptionally well under narrow bridges and sharp turns. Although we listened to the Audio through the earphones, the Captain gave an extra commentary which was useful and informative.
We loved it! Thank you Willan K was amazing.
The tour was fantastic. Peter, the driver was exceptionally friendly and helpful
Outstanding tour with JV who was a very funny captain
We rated the trip average because of a large group who were loud and unruly which undermined other passengers ability to hear the audio and enjoy the cruise. But we want to recognize JV, our captain, and give him a huge shoutout. After repeated warnings to the group to behave (unfortunately to no avail) JV was left with no choice but to evict the unruly group. We thank and applaud JV’s decision that salvaged part of the cruise. Thank you.
The Kapten Peter was friendly and a good guide
Overall a good experience, friendly service on time. However the audio and the earplugs were of really poor quality. i have done this trip many times it was much better qualitatively when the audio played out without having to use the earplugs, earplugs though very convenient unfortunately the quality is very poor.
Purchased the 24 hour hop on/hop off bus and canal package. From the moment we started dealing with this company it was upselling and tip pandering. We came to Europe to get away from this type of nonsense and so far it is the first and only company to employ these tactics. From the moment we purchased tickets, they tried to sell us a more expensive package. When you got onto the boat or bus the audio guide were filled with Ads of local companies they were trying to push you to. It was not always easy to find the drop on/drop off locations for both the buses and the boats and one boat we were on you could not take pictures because the windows were not clear enough. There was so much upselling going on with this company I had to check to see if it was American owned but it isn't.
Very informative and friendly service. Even though the weather was inclement staff were still very upbeat
Great tour and great guide! Highly recommend.
Fairly average cruise for an hour, but still good to do to see some of the sights from the boat. It rained heavily on and off and when the roof was closed it was like sitting in a greenhouse. The tour guide was curt but friendly. Would try a different, smaller boat next time for a better experience. Amsterdam is a lovely city so you can't really go wrong.
While the city is wonderful for shopping and things to see and do i feel its let down by having no toilets around the square. The queues in mac Donald's were ridiculous and having to pay £1 each time was infuriating. I feel that if you want tourists then have public amenities its a basic at the very least.
Very good canal trip lasting an hour, the onboard narration through headphones was set at a really good speed, with the driver giving extra info on other places. The boats have toilets, perfect for little kids who just can’t hold it ;-) Over all a great trip and would do it a third time
Excellent tour, highly recommended
W.U.P is a great captain and made us feel very safe and good laughs. 100% would do again. 19 languages and earphones worked well.
Excellent captain joseph H. Excellent service and attitude! Great experience 👍will refer friends to Lovers because of captain Joseph, thanks
A Hop On Hop Off canal cruise is a fantastic way to explore Amsterdam's beautiful canals. We were lucky to have Captain Megi at the helm. Megi is a friendly, professional, and well-presented lady. In addition to the audio guide, she shares extra information about the city in a fun and humorous way. Her enthusiasm and language skills make the cruise even more enjoyable. A relaxing way to experience Amsterdam from the water. Highly recommended!
Lasts a hour, multi lingual ear phones, There is a narrator with commentary on city highlights. Informative
非常有趣的一小时游轮旅行!我们的船长是W.V.P,他非常幽默!游船非常值,能看到很多步行看不到的风景,船上的讲解也非常到位和细致,有很多种语言的讲解,包括中文 A very enjoyable one-hour canal cruise! Our captain, W.V.P., was very funny. The cruise was great value for money and offered views that you wouldn’t be able to see on foot. The onboard commentary was also detailed and informative, with many language options available, including Chinese.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had a wonderful trip through the canals of Amsterdam with Captain Eddie! He was fun, engaging, and made the tour enjoyable from start to finish. He shared interesting stories about the city, explained everything clearly, and kept everyone entertained throughout the cruise. We highly recommend this tour and if you can, ask for Captain Eddie! Thank you for a great experience!
It was a great tour that provided an overview of this beautiful city. Very informative and wonderful introducción to an interesting city.
Fantastic experience Really funny captain who constantly told some really funny jokes on our journey Informative and a good laugh
Great experience! Our guide was excellent and I learned so much about Amsterdam's history.
We had a wonderful experience with Lovers Amsterdam! The staff gave us such a warm welcome and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. The captain was friendly, funny, and shared interesting stories and extra information that perfectly complemented the audio guide. The personal attention really made the tour feel special. Highly recommended if you want to enjoy Amsterdam from the water!
Excellent guide load of facts n
Today we were on the canals. We were 90% through a long tunnel, and a Lovers cruise decided to intentionally block our exit for no reason. He then rammed into our boat and forced us all the way back to the other side. The bully that he is then opened the hatch of his boat, and in front of his tour group, he screamed abuse us and threatened to 'break our arms and legs', amongst other outrageous threats. An utterly vile, unacceptable and unprovoked event... this is the face of your canal experience if you book with Lovers. This disgusting captain needs to be dismissed, if not charged.
There are headsets that you can listen to the history of the city. Audio comes in 18 different languages. If you’re going on a warm sunny day, bring a hat and wear sunscreen.
This is a solid professional entertaining canal tour. We have done this several times on different trips to Amsterdam. Weather today was beautiful and it was a pleasant enjoyable hour with a friendly guide with a good sense of humor. You get an excellent overview of the canal system one of amsterdam,s foremost attractions. This a great way to orient to this wonderful city. Available on the Amsterdam city card. Enjoy!
Audio from headphones and driver over intercom which was difficult to understand. Audio assumes everyone is facing the same direction
Stellar 1 hour cruise of Amsterdam's canal system. Tour with alcoholic beverages is well worth it - being 8 euros more than non package. Drinks are regularly flowing. Great narration during outing. Nice mix of scenery, facts and levity. Sunscreen up with sunglasses and hat before tour. Gets toasty on water. One hour duration was perfect. Almost 4 miles covered off a leisurely speed.
Friendly and very humouring. Informative and punctual. Loved it!
We booked the tour for our two school classes on our Amsterdam trip. Unfortunately we didn‘t arrive on time but Daniel and his collegues made it possible for us to take another boat. The kids (and teachers) were really happy. Our Captain was fun and all of the stuff was really helpful, friendly and understandig. Definitely recommend! Great Team!!!
The trip was very good. Unfortunately there was a lot of noise and wasn't able to listen to any of the explanation. I recommend doing it at a time with less people.
Know where all the stops are before you go. Make sure you have an app and a paper map..... .... .. .
Lovely audio tour with good information about amsterdam. Enclosed cruise which was great as it was raining.
Easy to board, audio is perfect and makes the journey more enjoyable. Easy to find pick up location and small cafe for before or after. 6 seats per table, a little tight with baggage but captain didnt over load
The audio guide was poor. It was sometimes out of time with the buildings described and it repeated itself twice - i.e. we heard the same commentary of part of the tour 3 times. Very disappointing commentary. I suggest this commentary needs to be reviewed and updated.
This was the most disappointing trip which we have ever been on. To start with, trying to get onto the boat is difficult for an older person due to the drop between the quai and the boat. Once on board, there was no synchronization between the recorded commentary and what we were seeing. When I pointed out to the "captain", whose role appeared simply to be to drive the boat, that there was an issue, he simply said that the GPS signal had dropped but that it would be fine in a while. It was not. The cruise was supposed to last an hour. It only lasted 45 minutes instead of one hour. Getting off the boat was also a nightmare and no help was offered by the crew (the "captain" plus one other young man who did nothing. Presumably maritime legislation requires a minimum of two crew on board this kind of boat which is why he was there). When we tried to make a complaint to the staff of the cruise company no-one either on the quai or in the local office wanted to know. We apparently have to write to the company which is guaranteed to put customers off complaining. We would certainly NOT RECOMMEND this company. It was a total waste of money €17.50 X 2. There are so many other options so I would suggest that everyone one should look elsewhere.
Beautiful cruise through the canals of Amsterdam
You have audio earbuds (wired, you can take as many as you want.) And you can sit anywhere you want. Its great for sightseeing but the windows can be a little dirty.
The experience you get is dependent upon the seat you get. Unfortunately we were sat where the boat only had a single glazed unit. This resulted in us having to clear the window with a squeegee every few minutes. If you had a seat with a double glazed window unit, then you were absolutely fine. I really feel that as you have paid the same money as everyone else, then you are entitled to the same experience. Perhaps an upgrade on all the window units is in order. A few days later we did another canal tour with Rondvaart Rederij Plas, this again was an hour long cruise, but instead of an audio guide, you got an actual person. Our tour guide was brilliant, very funny and really made the tour.
Warm and cozy, just enough to see the main waterworks and canals. Not too long. Windows will restrict the view but essential in the winter.
We booked a canal cruise with Lovers Canal Cruises expecting a relaxing boat trip where we could comfortably see where we were going. Unfortunately, the boat was very full, and some groups seemed to take up entire seating areas, which meant we ended up squeezed into seats facing backwards alongside strangers. This made it difficult to enjoy the sights, and we spent most of the trip straining to see where we were. We actually felt lucky compared to some couples who boarded later and weren’t even able to sit together. Having assigned seating would really improve the experience and ensure everyone can sit comfortably, especially couples and small groups. On the positive side, the audio commentary was clear and informative, the host/driver was friendly and entertaining, and the boat was warm and comfortable inside—which was especially welcome on a cold day after walking around the city. Value for money wasn’t too bad either at €17.50 each for an hour-long cruise. Overall, a nice concept with good staff and commentary, but the seating organisation could be improved to make the experience more enjoyable.
You should book this experience at the beguining of your trip, it give good insights on what to see.
Honestly I did not enjoy this canal tour. The host was funny and entertaining but the actual tour was not interesting at all. All we saw were homes, cars and boat homes. We passed the Anne Frank house and one other place that I do not remember. If you are looking for a non walking activity that is relaxing then this is for you.
