My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this walking tour of Amsterdam. Axel was a exceptional guide who provided great insight into both the history and day to day life of Amsterdam. Highly recommended.
Fantastic Amsterdam History Tour with David David from Hit the Bricks was a fantastic guide with an incredible wealth of knowledge. He was extremely engaging, and his tone and pace were perfect. His enthusiasm came alive as he shared Amsterdam’s unique history, truly bringing the city’s past to life while seamlessly connecting old Amsterdam with the new. The tour was scheduled for two hours, but David generously spent nearly three hours with us. It was relaxed, personal and never felt rushed. An absolutely perfect experience and a highlight of our visit to Amsterdam. Highly recommended!
We had a great tour with Canadian Dave 🌟 Friendly, informative, humorous, enthusiastic and knowledgeable - even the pants weather couldn’t dampen our terrific experience. We would definitely recommend this tour and fab guide. Thank you for a super experience! Avril, Fiona, Lynne and Roz 🏴
Axel was hugely knowledgeable and interesting. We really enjoyed the tour and learnt so much. He answered any questions and even recommended a fabulous Indonesian restaurant for dinner. Would definitely recommend to anyone. (We are a family of parents and 2 teenage boys.)
We had a really great private walking tour with hit the bricks - our guide was extremely knowledgeable and the 2+ hours tour left us wanting more - highly recommended
My wife and I did the Hit the Bricks walking tour with another couple during a recent visit to Amsterdam. We also did their canal tour, twice, during the same visit. We enjoyed all the tours. We had 9 people in our walking tour group. Our tour guide Dave was very knowledgeable and shared his knowledge throughout the tour. We covered a lot of territory, but there were frequent stops so that Dave could talk about what we were seeing. Dave was a bit more conservative than the canal tour guides, but entertaining nonetheless. I highly recommend the Hit the Bricks tour if you visit Amsterdam, or if you live there and want to learn more about the city’s history.
Fab introduction to Amsterdam! Axel was informative, good fun and knowledgeable- what more can you ask for?! Kept us safe among the bridges and bicycles!
I had always gone to Amsterdam for specific art exhibitions and this time decided to see some more of the city. I did both an evening 90 minute canal boat tour with Those Dam Boat Guys and, another day, a 2 hour (slow walking with lots of stops) walking tour with Hit the Bricks walks, a sister company. The guides were the big draw. They were articulate, entertaining and informative. The meeting place, a 15 minute walk from the Central Station, is a comfortable office with character where water, a toilette and provisions for the boat are available. I felt at home as a solo traveler with friendly international travellers and had a great time. Small, personable groups. The only reason the walking tour isn't a 5 star is because while the Begunhof was on the walking tour description, we did not go as it was a Saturday and, I was told, far too crowded with concerts on. Oh, and if you are there on a Wednesday night, the related bar next door as open mike stand up comedy in English.
We had an interesting and useful walk with Axel. He took us to places and shared information thar were useful for the rest of the weekend. Ask him about the canals, he is really an expert. We followed his advice sbout the canalmuseum for instanse.
We , my husband and I, were lucky enough to have a private tour with David. With his background as an historian David gave us a great history of The Netherlands, the formation of the country and the development of Amsterdam both physically and commercially. We enjoyed our tour very much and recommend it and David to you. Anne & Philip Australia
Axel led our tour and he was excellent. Very informative. Axel covered a lot of ground walking and historically. I strongly recommend.
We worked with Axel at Hit the Bricks Walking tours for our small group tour in Amsterdam on Saturday, April 25th. We provided a custom walking tour through the canal belt, dropping us off at our restaurant for lunch. Axel is a great story teller and a born comedian. We can't wait to bring another group back.
We did a walking tour with David, and it was fantastic. He is really knowledgeable of history and about what's going on in the city currently. Plus he had a great personality that made the tour fun and humorous. Highly recommend.
We did the walking tour with David yesterday and had a blast. Very knowledgeable about the city’s history and he wove stories into an interesting narrative that felt tailored to our group’s pace. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to get their bearings as a new traveler to Amsterdam or someone who enjoys history!
David was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot!!
David our guide was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed the walk very much
David’s Iove of history shines through as he tells the story of history Amsterdam. He is open to questions.
Our guide from Boat Guys was top notch, very accommodating and knowledgeable about Amsterdam and country history.
Great tour with very knowledgable guide - David was passionate about his field and brought the history to life, thank you!
David was a great guide, great stories about amsterdam
Excellent experience, lots of knowledge about the area a great understanding of the history too. Definitely the best way to see Amsterdam and getting an understanding of how it all works.
Wow did I learn a lot! Axel was Amazing. NYC solo traveller, so I knew we would be walking and I loved it. We saw so much of the city and it didn't feel rushed by any means. Small group, which was really nice. All of my questions were answered and I had many. You can tell Axel really loves just chatting with people and telling stories. Highly Recommend!
Excel was an excellent host and guide. His mixture of knowledge trivia and sense of humor made it won of my best tour experiences. Thank you for a wonderful day!
As a family with older teens, we enjoyed this tour. As the first thing we did on arrival in Amsterdam it gave us our bearings geographically and historically. Axel was an excellent guide, friendly, fun and informative. Highly recommend. We like the vibe of these guys.
We had an absolutely fabulous experience with Hit The Bricks and cannot recommend them highly enough. We ended up doing three tours – History, Ghastly Gretchen, and Happy Hour History (the pub tour) – and every single one was outstanding. Our guide, Axel, was brilliant: incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and genuinely entertaining. Each tour was packed with fascinating historical detail, fun and quirky facts, and delivered with a fantastic sense of humour that kept everyone interested from start to finish. The stories were brought to life in a way that was informative without ever feeling dry. The variety across the tours was excellent – from rich history to darker tales and then a relaxed, social pub crawl with historical context woven in perfectly. Axel’s storytelling and energy made each tour feel fresh and memorable. If you want a tour that’s educational, fun, and full of personality, Hit The Bricks is a must-do. One of the highlights of our trip! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Honestly this was the best walking tour of Amsterdam. Only 5 of us and the tour guide David was animated, incredibly funny and bursting with interesting facts. It was well balanced with an overview of Dutch history. My teenage daughters loved it- which is the highest compliment!
Axel was a very knowledgeable guide Saw parts of city we wouldn’t have discovered Information delivered with a good sense of humour Would thoroughly recommend
Interesting tour that included a lot of history. Knowledgeable guide who was responsive to questions and provided lots of interesting details. (And just FYI, there is a bathroom at the meeting place.)
This is a GREAT activity especially for newbies (like me) visiting the city for the first time. Axel was a great tour guide who gave an informative and engaging overview of Amsterdam's history and culture today - lots of fun facts I'll be annoying people with back home - while stopping at various iconic landmarks and places I probably would've missed or not known the full story of on my own. Can't recommend the Hit the Bricks/Dam Boat Guys people enough! (Also say hi to the cutest cat Koko if you get to their office/meeting point early. 😄)
Axel was fun, off the wall and gave a detailed and personal guide to the inner ring. His detailed description of the East India Co. and its role in history was a great education. Don’t miss this insiders guide!
Our tour guide David was most knowledgeable. The tour was very informative and entertaining. Would absolutely recommend!
Axl knows his city inside out and is very proud of it. He brought its history to life and did a great job of educating us, while entertaining us at the same time. Put this on your list, as it is a great couple of hours where you are shown parts of Amsterdam that you would otherwise miss. Well worth it!
With Axel you 'hit the bricks' rockhard! Axel is your own personal Rockstar/entertainer/comedian and he will tell you all that you didn't know you needed to know about Amsterdam! And he will tell the stories, while "painting" them with all the colours imaginable, so you remember it😉 Two hours was just not enough!
Axel was a terrific tour guide. He was part well-timed comic, part history teacher, part proud Amsterdamian and completely entertaining and enlightening.
Our guide was very knowledgeable, personable, and funny. I felt socially comfortable throughout the tour and learned more than I expected.
We loved this walking tour with Axel. Full of history and stories, and even some ghost stories along the way. The whole family loved it!
When we arrived at the tour site, the operator had no idea we were coming, and no guide was available, although our voucher clearly showed we had booked the tour. The operator graciously agreed to substitute a 90 minute canal tour., which we enjoyed immensely. So, a not-so-great review for Viator, but a big thumbs up for Hit the Bricks/Those Dam Boat Guys Tours and our guide, Mark.
Our guide was awesome and shared so many amazing things with us. It was a very hot day, so he was watchful of our group. Gave honest options when asked about places to go/not go.
Great tour! With just a few days in Amsterdam we were keen to get an understanding of where we were and what had happened there. Hit the Bricks was such a fun way to do that. Axel ‘s style was funny and irreverent and effective. While we were laughing, we were learning. And although we had biked the area the day before, he brought us into nooks and crannies of the city we had totally missed (and had never realized were there.) It was eye opening! His blunt take on his city and straightforward explanations of its history was our key to Amsterdam. Go for the jokes, but enjoy the wisdom that comes with them. Great value. Loved the pace and the spur of the moment side trips made it feel fresh. Two hours sped by. Also really liked the bar he sent us to after. It was yet another hidden gem we would have missed. Don’t miss this tour.
Most people get introduced to Amsterdam by canal tour. We chose a walking tour to see different sites and were certainly not disappointed. Axel was knowledgeable, personable and very informative! I’d definitely take the time to take a guided WALK around the city as well as a canal ride to see what you won’t and can’t by boat. Well worth the time and money!
Excellent walking tour of Amsterdam with our guide Alex (or Axel? 😅) that showed us what we cannot see as tourists wandering in the streets. The sorties were full of color (and humour) and it is a great way to see the city differently. Great experience, we loved it! Highly recommended.
We had a wonderful small group tour and loved our time walking around Amsterdam and learning about its history through facts, funny stories, and easy conversation throughout our tour. Axel was a wonderful guide who speaks with so much love and passion for his city. We learned a lot of new information and were able to build on other pieces of information we learned earlier throughout the trip. We cannot recommend this tour enough and would definitely book with Hit The Bricks again!
I went on a wonderful afternoon walking tour with Axl. Axl was funny and informative, and the places we stopped along the way were interesting. The best part about the tour was that our group was small (4 total guests ) so there were plenty of opportunities to ask questions. I’ll definitely book again with this company in the future!
We felt lucky to have David (the Canadian) guide our tour! Not only was he extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about this fascinating city, but he’s been to many cities that we have visited, and was able to share comparisons with us. He sorted out our geography, filled ours ears with the history we sought, and introduced us to places of which we had not read about. It was as perfect as a tour can be.
Great tour guide, he was very knowledgeable and gave some good advice of where to visit after the trip. Visited all the interesting places
Fantastic walking tour with Axel! He is passionate about his country. He is knowledgeable and engaging and was happy to take all our questions. As well as the popular tourist sites he showed us some hidden gems too. At the end of the tour he gave us tips for things to do and places to eat, which was very welcome. Fun, informative experience. Highly recommend!
I loved the tour as it provided me with an opportunity to know the city better and beyond i.e history, culture, architecture and people of the place. My guide Axel has a beautiful way of narration and is passionate about his country and its heritage which added to the experience. A must do to really get a flavour of the real Amsterdam!
Fantastic general Stampot walking tour with Axel! He was knowledgeable, engaging, and eager to make sure our small group had an experience to remember. Yes, he showed us the big stuff, but also quite a few hidden gems that only a long-time resident would know. And throughout, he exemplified the personality, humor and a distinctly human touch that makes Amsterdam special. Highly recommend!
An unforgettable experience! Axel’s ghost walking tour around Amsterdam was both chilling and captivating. His storytelling was top-notch, blending historical facts with spine-tingling legends that brought the haunted corners of the city to life. Axel has a natural charisma and deep knowledge of Amsterdam’s darker history, making every stop along the way a fascinating glimpse into the past. The atmospheric streets and canals of Amsterdam only added to the eerie vibe. If you’re looking for a unique way to explore the city and love a good ghost story, this tour is a must. Highly recommended!
