Itinerary
Walk through the narrow streets and see all the sights that the Red Light District has to offer! Learn about the history and the current situation of the Red Light District and explore the narrow streets of Amsterdam with your private guide.
1. The dam, Also known as the City built on trees: Due to the soil in Amsterdam consisting of a thick layer of fen and clay, some buildings in the city are built on wooden poles that are fixed in a sandy layer that is approximately 11 meters deep. Since the old days, the houses in Amsterdam were known to have been built on wooden foundation piles that are driven deep into the clay, peat, and water until they reach the first layer of solid sand.
The area is a part of the Red Light District, tob e specific, part of the Old Town area. So this is the oldest part of the city that is why there is a lot of history as well.
Pub The Ape, also known as Int Aepjen in Dutch. Built around 1540 and one out of two remaining wooden buildings left in Amsterdam. Which is very special as there was a big fire in 1452 and after that point the government decided that buildings should have brick facades.
The Waag used to be one of the city gates of Amsterdam, a part of the defensive wall. It was built around the 1400s and is the second oldest building of Amsterdam. Later on it was used as a guild, craftsman’s organizations, situated themselves within the Waag and around the square.
The smallest house of Amsterdam was built around the 1700s and was first used as storage place for the VOC trading company. Later on people started living in the house for a very long time.

Ben was very knowledgeable, friendly and witty. He answered all of our questions and we really enjoyed him! We could have listened to him hours more even tho it was dreadfully cold! Give him a raise!!!
Our leader Robin is fifth generation Amsterdam native/local. His love and passion for the city was evident. We learned so much about the culture which eventually led to the sex and drug trades. I would highly recommend Robin and this tour in particular....VERY fascinating
A good way to gain some insight into the historical context of the coffee/cannabis culture and the red light district through the ages. Also interesting to hear how the district currently operates and the changes over the years. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side on the night - we got drenched!
An interesting and eye opening experience for first timers to Amsterdam! Our guide Ben was informative, friendly and good company for the tour.
Very interesting with lots of interesting info. Aarre was a great guide and was very good at explaining things
We had a wonderful time. Katie our guide was very informative. We booked a small group tour which made it very intimate.
An excellent tour which explains a lot of history surrounding the origins of the ‘Red Light’ area. It also helps you understand other key things about Amsterdam. It was highly informative and also entertaining. Sophie, our guide was excellent.
Ben was very entertaining with all his stories. He kept the tour very interesting. There is so much more than you can imagine within the History of Amsterdam.
Fun and informative tour with a wonderful guide. Very aware of the ages involved and was cognizant of informational impact.
Ben was the guide. Nice guy and we saw some unique events. He was too much of a story teller on tales that were off topic for the content of the tour.
It was a crazy day to do the tour as it was King’s Day. Guide was knowledgeable but unfortunately werenot able to see all the sites
Highly recommend this tour. This is a big part of Amsterdam history. We did the 1800 tour that is more family friendly and was ideal for my 17 year old, the later tour I would keep for adults only. Our tour guide was amazing and we learnt a lot
VERy BAD Experience. If you are in Amsterdam the pst 3-4 days, you know the weather is not good. It is very difficult to walk on an icy street. We arrived at the meeting place at 6:02. We suppose to meet at 6:00. I messaged the operator. I called. Meanwhile, i did not receive any updates or message from the operator. When we arrived the (small group) left. No one was there. We waited until 6:15. We were so disappointed. Bad Tour operator for not giving us a chance even for 2 mins. My other tours in Tripadvisor and Get your-guide give at least 5 mins allowance to wait…they call the clients… I am not doing anymore any Viator tour. What a shame!
The tour was rich in history as well as the tour of the red light district. Ben articulated history and related and well.
we did the tour with Ben he was grate. very informative. we arrived a little earlier for the tour so we when for a little walk in the area but after the tour walking the same route we had much more appreciation for the area and customs. highly recommend this tour if its your thirst time to Amsterdam then it is a must
Robin was an awesome tour guide. Gave a ton of history of the area and made the tour a lot of fun! Would highly recommend taking one of his tours. He also gave a lot of local tips and recommendations which we are extremely grateful for!
Robin was a Natural and told great stories and histories, leading confidently - Enjoyed his company and A-Dam RL District immensely🫶
The tour was great. Our guide, Aarre, was extremely knowledgeable about the area and the culture and allowed for a broad perspective of life in the red light district. It was fun and informative and highly recommended.
This was a fun and informative tour facilitated by Ben who made the history of Amsterdam come alive. He kept us entertained with lively anecdotes and stories from the past.
Guide was very knowledgeable and we had a great tour. We have a better understanding of Amsterdam and the Red Light distract including its history.
This walking tour was great! a good mix of history and current event information. Our guide was very considerate and knowledgeable.
This was such a great tour! Sander knew so much about the geography, history, architecture, restaurants, shopping, the actual red light business and much more. He made sure to answer everyone’s questions while not getting off track. Definitely one of the most interesting and informative tours we’ve ever experienced. He also was excellent at keeping track of our group as a few people would wander a bit at times. Highly recommends this tour with Sander!
The lady who provided our tour did seem very knowledgeable about the history of the red light district. I asked a question about a statue on the tour and she said she didn’t know and it’s not part of this tour. She said, “Basically” a minimum of every others sentence. That was extremely distracting.
Our guide gave us insights and culture on the Amsterdam sex industry. Also, we visited a cannabis shop. The tour included history also. It lasted about an hour and 35 minutes.
It’s always a great time when you get to learn something about the city that you are in. What an awesome and personable tour guide. I couldn’t have asked for a better person.
I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting the country. It was very educational but fun at the same time
A great tour where I had fun, saw many intetesting sites, learned a lot and had a fantastic guide. Definitely worth it!
This was not such a great tour. We only had 5 in our group but the guide walked and talked without everyone there. He was hard to hear and we found the tour disappointing.
The guide who led our tour, a man, was extremely rude and disrespectful, making us feel uncomfortable throughout the entire experience. He also made inappropriate comments directed at me. I reported the issue to the activity provider two weeks ago via chat, but I have not received any response.
My husband and I took this tour on SAT/2 AUG and it was fantastic. Our guide was so knowledgeable and even though the city was crazy busy due to the LGBTQ Canal Parade, he still managed to get us all through the Red Light District. We saw ALL kinds of interesting things and learned all about the history of the District. I highly recommend this tour!
An excellent tour guide. Great review of Dutch history. Nice walking pace and quite informative. We learned a lot. Definitely would recommend this tour. It was fun and we all got a bunch of laughs as well.
Very informative, fun and interesting tour! Sander was our tour guide and did an excellent job of sharing Amsterdam’s history with us!
Max was amazing Very knowledgeable and humerus We all enjoyed the tour It was nice that this wasn’t 100% about the red light district too (More like 15%) as there isn’t much to tell
Sanders was the perfect tour guide. Not only did he give a great tour of the red light district, but he packed in lots of very interesting historical information about the city we would never have thought to ask, all with a great sense of humor and personality. Ask for Sanders!
Interesting tour. Lots of information we hadn't heard. Enjoyed being with a small group. Liked the tour guide. Did the 6:00 tour so it wasn't yet dark out.
Very interesting and informative. The tour guide Kathi has illuminated the topic in an excellent neutral way
Das Insider-Wissen des Guides war hervorragend. Die Führung war sehr nett und kurzweilig mit spannenden Infos zu verschiedenen Themen. Der Guide war sehr gut verständlich und humorvoll
Great guide, lots of interesting facts. Was highly recommended and pleasant tour. I thought I knew a lot. Yeah, that's right, only there's hidden stuff left
