Step back in time at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most evocative places on Earth. Frozen in time by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD, this vast site offers a unique window into ancient Roman life. Walk through remarkably preserved streets, explore opulent villas adorned with vibrant frescoes, and marvel at the majestic temples and theaters that once formed the heart of this thriving city.
Enter the city through Porta Marina, the most monumental of Pompeii’s seven gates. Walk in through this ancient gateway, originally designed for travelers arriving from the sea, and explore with your guide the impressive double-arch structure that separated pedestrians from carriages. As you pass through these massive stone walls, you’ll immediately feel the grandeur of the Roman Empire welcoming you into the streets of the past.
Step into the Forum, the monumental heart of ancient Pompeii. Explore with your guide the remains of the city's grandest temples and public buildings that once buzzed with political and commercial life. Walk in the footsteps of Roman citizens across this expansive square, where you can admire the iconic silhouette of Mt. Vesuvius looming in the distance—the perfect spot to capture the essence of this frozen city.
The Macellum of Pompeii was located on the Forum and as the provision market of Pompeii was one of the focal points of the ancient city. The building was constructed in several phases. When the earthquake of 62 CE destroyed large parts of Pompeii, the Macellum was also damaged.
The Forum Baths are located behind the Temple of Jupiter and date back to the years immediately after the founding of the colony of veterans by General Silla (80 BC). Women's and men's quarters had separate entrances. The men's section presents an apodyterium (dressing room), used also as a tepidarium (for medium temperature baths), frigidarium (for cold baths) and calidarium (for hot baths). Like many buildings in Pompeii, the baths were heavily damaged during the earthquake of 62 AD.
Dominated by the Vesuvius with its statues of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, the temple was the Capitolium, similar to the one located in the Ancient Rome. The statues were highly placed to be visible to those passing in the Forum.
The House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno) is one of the largest and most luxurious private residences in Pompeii, occupying an entire city block. Named after the iconic bronze statue of a dancing faun found in its main atrium, the house is a masterpiece of Roman architecture and Hellenistic influence. It is most famous for housing the magnificent Alexander Mosaic, which depicts the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. With its two peristyle gardens and intricate floor mosaics, it remains a powerful symbol of the immense wealth and sophisticated taste of the city's elite.
Via dell’Abbondanza was the ancient main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, which ran across the city in the direction east/west from the Forum to the Porta Sarno. In ancient times the street was crowded and noisy with many shops, workshops ("officinae”), cafes, snack-bars and restaurants for food and drink.
The Basilica, with its extension of 1,500 square meters, was the most sumptuous building of the Forum, and its space was used to carry out business and for the administration of justice.
The Large Theater of Pompeii was built from the Romans on the slope of a hill located in the area; they took advantage of the natural depression of the mountain to create a majesty auditorium divided into 5 sectors. On the stage were played tragedies of the Greco-Roman traditions.
The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most famous brothel in the ruined Roman city of Pompeii. It is of particular interest for the erotic paintings on its walls. Lupanar is Latin for "brothel". The Pompeii lupanar is also known as Lupanare Grande.
After an unforgettable day of history, settle into your comfortable coach for the return trip to Sorrento.

Tour was very good Pickup went smooth. Bus ride along the coast was nice. Tour guide pointing put spots and facts along the way. Her English was just ok. Hard to understand at times but she did a good job. Dropped off where a second guide takes you in. He was knowledgeable and comical. Bigger group than I expected . 30 people. but they give you a radio with an earplug to hear the guide. My only gripe was that he stayed on the portat ⁰marina side of Pompeii for the most part so we never got to see the Fugitives or the amphitheater. . The two most famous sites in Pompeii! Wish I had know that going in.
Good Pompeii tour. Very onformative. You see a lot in a few hours. Didn’t need to see more.
We had a great experience exploring Pompeii with our very knowledgeable and entertaining guide, Mimi. The pick up location was central and easy to find and our host Max added extra stories and history. So glad we chose this skip the line tour - Excellent value and high marks!
Max our your guid was informative & entertaining, He met the group got us all checked in & entertained us for our hour bus ride to Pompaii. Mimi took over at the ruins as our local guide. Mimi was great - explaining all the misconceptions that the movies have taught us! Mimi was very passionate about the history- the tour was a joy to experience. Go early - we were the first group in - that was wonderful by the time we were leaving the site was very crowder & we were glad to be finished up! We choose the half day tour
Our trip to Pompei with guides Max and Mimi was first rate. Max offered excellent commentary on our bus ride from Sorrento to Pompei and return, with clear instructions on timing and safety as well as highlights around the Sorrento area. Mimi, (Michaele) was passionate, knowledgeable and entertaining in his commentary about all aspects of Pompei. An excellent tour which we highly recommend. Patricia and Jim
Tour from Sorrento was a seamless experience start to finish. Our guide was knowledgeable and entertaining, would most definitely recommend!
It was excellent. My husband had a rollator so it was a little difficult for him. Not ideal. But Max and Isabella were really knowledgeable and engaging.
We conveniently booked this tour through Viator. The day of the tour, we met the tour operator and checked in at the meeting point which was well done. They took us to the tour bus which was clean and in good condition. Our tour guide was great and very knowledgeable and interacted with the tour group of 40 people during the drive to Pompeii from Sorrento. Once in the park, the guide took us on the tour and answered our questions. The pace of the tour was good and we saw a lot of the archeological park. We had lunch at the park and when it was time to leave, we found there was a mudslide at the tunnel that occurred in the morning after we passed by. The tour was able to get us on a train to Sorrento as the road back to Sorrento was closed and they handled that well. Great tour.
The tour through the ruins was excellent as it really captures what happened in Pompeii. LuLu was a fantastic tour guide and we would highly recommend this tour.
They overbook and have terrible safety care. Tour guides are more theatrical than informative and didn’t want to do the tour in order cause he said that’s the “stupid tour”. Didn’t fit in half the locations cause we were overbooked and headset or not you can’t hear anything cause there are multiple tours squeezing in next to you. Can’t see anything cause everyone has their phones in your face. All around terrible experience, if you want to go, do it without a guide.
Very informative. Perfect amount of time at the site. Guide was very knowledgeable. The only issue we had was nothing to do with the guide but with the microphone we all used to hear her. It would break in and out when we were not close enough to her and sometimes we would lose communication for a bit completely.
This experience was amazing.... The guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly I would recommend this trip.
Worthwhile trip. Tons of things to see. Our guide was very knowledgeable and took great care of our big group (30).
We had a great time exploring Pompeii with Lulu! She was a great guide - very engaging, funny, knowledgeable, and lioness-type (protecting us, her tour/cubs, with her claws!). I do wish we had seen more of the body plaster casts (we only saw three of them on display and I later realized that was just a fraction of what could have been seen). However Lulu taught us so much about what life was like in Pompeii that we would not have gotten had we gone by ourselves. It really brought the ruins and the city to life. I do feel like I might need to go back someday to do Pompeii again (maybe without a tour to allow more time for pics/my own priorities) but this was a great intro! Of note, there was a strike preventing us from getting back to Sorrento by the bus. The tour company instead paid for us to take the local train from Pompeii under Lulu's guidance. I was appreciative of the flexibility (though the train was by no means as comfortable as the bus haha).
Wonderful tour very knowledgeable and informative, funny and absolutely beautiful! I would highly recommend going early in morning to skip the lines!
Going on the early morning tour was a good choice. The ride along the coast to Pompeii was gorgeous.
Luisa (Lulu) was fantastic. Was had such a great day. Weather did not permit us to go up to Mt Vesuvius, and it had been closed already, so we were taking to Herculaneum instead. Amazing! Possibly a better historic site than pompeii?? Luisa made it fun for my 6 and 10yo children, and even edited some adult content so that they would not be exposed to the more graphic part of pompeii. We removed their audio and she was able to share it with the adults in the group after we had done so. A very considerate touch. She was considerate the whole day through the rain and inclement conditions. She earned every star. We were thankful for her kindness and enthusiasm that helped make it a memorable trip!
Guide walked and talked extremely fast and entire group had difficulty keeping up-as a result, most of the group was often out of range of the audio and only heard about 50% of the tour. Guide was not interested in checking on the group and seeing if everyone was with her or if they could hear.
Highly recommend. At the meeting point, you are greeted by a guide who provides context and history during the bus ride. It was about a 50- minute drive to Pompeii from Sorrento. He talked for maybe 30 minutes. Then when we arrived at Pompeii, we were given a different tour guide for the actual ruins. We had Lulu who was amazing. She was great at hustling us into the starting point, so we wouldn’t have as many crowds inside with us. She was also great at avoiding busy areas. We started our tour around 8:30 AM. Which I highly recommend. We were done by around 11:30 and it had started to get busier then In the morning it wasn’t very crowded at all. We got to learn a lot of history, take many photos, and walk through a very interesting portion of the city.
Our guide, Lulu, was excellent! She brought a lot of information into the tour that made it feel like you were there, in the days leading up to the eruption. A lot of things you do not learn in history books. She was an amazing part of the tour!
Fabulously easy. Guide showed us very interesting corners of the city and was very informative. Well worth it for ese comfort and experience.
Great trip! Luisa was great and very knowledgeable!
Excellent day with guide LuLu. We had an amazing experience.
This was advertised as a skip the line tour, however we did need to stand in a long queue to get in. As we were standing in line, our tour guide from Pompeii (a different person that our bus tour guide) began talking about Pompeii’s history. We were the last of our group in line, and were far enough away from the tour guide that he kept cutting in and out and we couldn’t hear much of what he was saying. He was very knowledgeable and provided us with great information. He took us to areas that weren’t as crowded which was wonderful! If you choose the tour that also included Vesuvius, know that it is a 1.2 mile hike from where the bus drops you off to the top. It’s quite steep with loose gravel, so make sure you have good walking shoes.
Wear good shoes! Our guide Margarita was excellent. Very knowledgeable and lead us through the ruins at a good pace for all to see the real highlights of Pompeii. Incredible site.
Nello and Gabriella were great guides! Very informative tour. Really enjoyed the tour and highly recommend.
Great day started with our guide Max, he was a superstar. He then handed us over to Luigi(very bright clothes) , he was absolutely amazing, this guys knowledge on Pompeii is off the scale. Fantastic!
The tour was informative and full of surprises! Loulou was funny and kept our interest, while sharing so much information. Be sure to wear good walking shoes and bring water, as it can be warm among all the stone and ruins, even if your tour is in the early morning.
Our tour guide Lulu was wonderful! She made the experience both fun and informative. Her knowledge of the site really brougjt it to life. Our experienced driver, Salvatore, was amazing. How these drivers navigate these big buses on the narrow streets I'll never know.
Daniella was excellent as was Isabella - Isabella knowledge and enthusiasm for the information she was sharing, light touch, friendly and included the group. Meeting point isnt clear, and was quite chaotic, but other than that - excellent tour and a good way to get a good understanding of the history, and what has been and is happening now
This was a fascinating tour, led by the incomparable Luigi! Such an amazing passionate guide! 100% recommend! PS - PROPER footwear and a hat ( on a sunny day) is a must!
Take plenty of water. It’s hot even in late September and into October. Guide was informative. We would never have been able to figure out all the different rooms without his knowledge. It was sobering to think about all the death and people’s last moments. Interesting pots and jar artifacts. Very thorough and educational.
Our guide, Lucia aka LuLu, was absolutely fantastic! She kept us engaged and she made the entire experience most enjoyable.
We did the half-day Pompei tour starting off fom Sorrento with our guide Nello. When we arrived at Pompei Nello handed us over to another guide, Mimi. We left Sorrento by bus promptly after meeting at 7.30 a.m. Nello gave us a very entertaining and informative commentary along the way, giving some background about the Sorrento region and about what to expect on the tour. We arrived shortly before the 9.00 a.m. opening time, allowing for a comfort break before Mimi took over. Although the entrance to the site is very busy we all got through efficiently. Our party was about 30 people, the guide spoke to us through headsets which worked very well. We spent about 2 hours on the site. Mimi was an excellent guide, knowledgeable, witty and very informative about some of the myths and realities of the history of Pompeii. At the end of the tour he took us out of the site and back to our meeting point. We were back in Sorrento by about 12.30. I recommend this tour. However a couple of points. Firstly in two hours you only get to see a relatively small area of the whole site, which is huge. You would get to see more if you went on your own and spent longer - although you probably wouldn't understand what you see so well. Secondly, it's a strangely empty site, because virtually all of the everyday objects which have been found at Pompeii have been relocated to the archaeological museum in Naples. To get a much more complete picture of the everyday lives of Pompeii's inhabitants, you would probably have to go there too.
Lulu was a great guide! We learned so much about the history of Pompeii and it was very interesting. In September there are still large crowds.
We had a lovely morning Pompei tour. Lucio was full of information, he kept the tour moving nicely provided all relevant details. Bus was very clean tidy lovely driver Nello navigating the crazy streets in an air-conditioned bus. despite the 7:30 am start. I would definitely recommend a half a day tour to Pompeii.
Knowledgeable and witty guide (can't spell his name but started with M and he lived in Dublin and actually grew up in Pompei). Full exploration of the historic town and clear explanations about the various types of buildings and businesses in the historic city. Very interesting rour. The only issue was that the road back to Sorrento closed because of a landslide and we had to take a local train back on our own, which was a bit chaotic. Not the trip operator's fault, but we did have to deal with the logistics instead of a bus ride back.
Our guide Lou Lou was amazing . We learned so much . She was energetic and full of knowledge and we had a fantastic day. In the heat it was good to go early and also beat the crowds.
In Pompei you're out in the open so sunscreen and a hat are a good idea. Our tour guide Vinny was very knowledgeable and you see all the main points and history. I think you would miss a lot if you tried to do on your own. It's also very crowded and the guide knows best. Getting to and from Pompei and later to Mt. Vesuvius we had another guide, Daniella (Danni) and she was great! So organized and you felt safe. She gave history of Sorrento and the other areas along the way. She was so entertaining and very sweet.
Lulu was outstanding! Great tour.
Michele (Mimi) was phenomenal. He was so knowledgeable and funny! He made the entire excursion enjoyable. Definitely recommend
Our guide was great and very friendly and knowledgable on Pompeii. The bus was clean and new and the experience was well run. We ran into an issue with the road back to Sorrento being out and they got us on the train. Great experience!!
A fun and educational day. Louisa aka Lulu was an absolute joy. Shared interesting funny information. We appreciated both her and our talented drivers Marco. Highly recommended!
The tour guide Monica was very well educated in the history and events of Pompeii. Such an amazing site.
Ground is uneven so comfy shoes are a must also take enough water to keep hydrated. It’s better to go with a guide, ours was Luigi, very knowledgeable
Really good having a guide - brought history to life.
The meeting point was central and easy to locate. Our guide Mimi was easy to understand and benefitted from the guide vs just paying for entry. The tour was a couple of hours long but was long enough to understand the site and what you were seeing. Anything longer would just be repetitive. Bus was comfortably air conditioned and got to see some. Sights along the way.
The coach and travel was exceptional but the group was far too big which meant you couldn’t see the points of interest the guide was talking about and if you were more than half way back in the group the radio signal kept breaking up and so you couldn’t hear what was said. Pompeii itself was amazing and well worth a visit
Had a great trip to Pompeii, the tour was very good. Our tour guide Lulu was fantastic, good fun and very knowledgeable. Our bus driver Vincenzo was very welcoming! I would recommend going on an early tour to avoid crowds and the heat. Also having a guide makes navigating the site easy, I don't think we would have seen as much self guided. Thank you Lulu for making it such a great trip!
