Fabulous private tour of Pompeii with an incredibly experienced and insightful guide. Then to Mt. Vesuvio for short hike to the crater. Driver pointed out places of interest and history along the way and on the scenic route back. Stopped at points to take photos.

Pompeii is a stunning archaeological site in southern Italy’s Campania region, near the coast of the Bay of Naples. Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
The Civil Forum is the core of daily life of the city and is the focal point of all the main public buildings for city administration and justice, business management, and trade activities such as markets, as well as the main places of citizen worship.
The Temple of Jupiter dominates the north side of the Forum, with Mount Vesuvius scenically rising behind. When the colony was founded (80 BC), the temple underwent a radical renovation and became a real Capitolium with the three cult statues of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, which looked like those of the Capitolium in Rome, placed on a high base so as to make them visible to whoever passed in the Forum square.
The Macellum consists of a tuff quadriporticus with a hall for worship in an elevated position on the eastern side, in line with the entrance. The copies of two marble statues, a female and a male armed, are found on the niches of the side wall, together with the fragment of a larger statue, probably pertaining to an emperor, Titus or Vespasian, indicating how this area was intended for the imperial cult. To its left is a room for meetings of a sacred board and to the right a large room with a masonry counter perhaps for fish to be sold.
Via dell’Abbondanza was the ancient main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, which ran across the city in the direction east/west from the Forum to the Porta Sarno. In ancient times the street was crowded and noisy with many shops, workshops ("officinae”), cafes, snack-bars and restaurants for food and drink.
The Forum Baths are located behind the Temple of Jupiter and date back to the years immediately after the founding of the colony of veterans by General Silla (80 BC). Women's and men's quarters had separate entrances. The men's section presents an apodyterium (dressing room), used also as a tepidarium (for medium temperature baths), frigidarium (for cold baths) and calidarium (for hot baths). Like many buildings in Pompeii, the baths were heavily damaged during the earthquake of 62 AD.
The House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno) is one of the largest and most luxurious private residences in Pompeii, occupying an entire city block. Named after the iconic bronze statue of a dancing faun found in its main atrium, the house is a masterpiece of Roman architecture and Hellenistic influence. It is most famous for housing the magnificent Alexander Mosaic, which depicts the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. With its two peristyle gardens and intricate floor mosaics, it remains a powerful symbol of the immense wealth and sophisticated taste of the city's elite. The house belonged to Quintus Poppaeus Sabinus of the Poppei family, relatives of the Empress Poppea Sabina, Nero's second wife.
The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most famous brothel in the ruined Roman city of Pompeii. It is of particular interest for the erotic paintings on its walls. Lupanar is Latin for "brothel". The Pompeii lupanar is also known as Lupanare Grande. The prostitutes in the brothel were mostly Greek and Oriental slaves who were paid between two and eight Asses (a glass of wine cost one As) for their services.
The Large Theater of Pompeii was built from the Romans on the slope of a hill located in the area; they took advantage of the natural depression of the mountain to create a majesty auditorium divided into 5 sectors. On the stage were played tragedies of the Greco-Roman traditions.
The Basilica, with its extension of 1,500 square meters, was the most sumptuous building of the Forum, and its space was used to carry out business and for the administration of justice.
Drop off at 1.000 mt high on the Volcano. Mount Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 km east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. In 79 AD eruption destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Mount Vesuvius doesn’t stand alone. While the ‘main peak’ is named Vesuvius, there is another mountain which is attached to it, Monte Somma. is listed among the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. Volcanologists and geologists alike agree that the next volcanic eruption is overdue and that when it does happen, it will be big. The layer of magma that lies beneath Vesuvius measures a huge 154 square miles; this is why scientists monitore the volcano’s activity 24/7.
Reach the crater's edge at 1.280 mt to admire a breathtaking panorama on the Gulf of Naples. The surface of the path is uneven, but it' ll be well worth it. Following the devastating eruption, it was named after the Roman God of the Flame and Metal Forgery – Vulcan

Superb experience - we were picked up directly from our villa in a luxury vehicle. All the logistics were handled for us - the pompeii guide was very knowledgeable and we loved the walk up Vesuvius.
From pick up to drop off- fantastic! John Franco was our driver- punctual, friendly, knowledgeable, lives in Pompeii… Janeirro - licensed archeological guide for Pompeii and Vesuvius- amazing- so knowledgeable, local- great grandfather experienced and survived eruption of 1944… fun, friendly… then Mt Vesuvius- great climb, amazing view… would highly recommend- both care deeply for their town and sharing their knowledge and experience. Consider them friends. Thanks to both for sharing their time and wisdom! Best wishes to both families! From Canadian friends -Trish & Steve
What an amazing experience! Nello was so friendly & knowledgeable, he kept us entertained during the journey & was a great guide. Patricia, our tour guide for Pompeii, was excellent. You could almost envisage the inhabitants going about their daily business. We had a lovely lunch, which was extremely good value & then set off for our journey to Vesuvius. The hike to the top was worth the effort, just for the views. All in all, a very enjoyable day!
Our tour guide at Pompeii and our driver were excellent. There is only one very poor restroom at the base of the hike to Vesuvio. Would recommend stopping before arriving.
Our guide Vincenzo was wonderful- friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Pompeii itself was fascinating and so impressive. Although the walk was a bit challenging for 70 year old folks, Vesuvius was sobering and captivating in its raw beauty.
Good communication, everything was super clear! Roberta was a fantastic tour guide! I also appreciated Carmen during Pompei tour!
Nápoles is the interesting city Roberta is the excellent guide, all time was explained of different places And was amazing
We had an amazing tour from Sorrento to Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius with Eugenio as our guide! Eugenio was fantastic – super knowledgeable and really friendly. He made the whole trip smooth and enjoyable, sharing interesting facts and stories along the way. His passion for the area really came through, and he kept everything well-organized and fun. If you’re looking for a great day trip from Sorrento, I highly recommend going with Eugenio!
First, I would have given a five (5) star review if I was reviewing ONLY the private tour guide Vincenzo Paduano. He was extremely knowledgeable and personable. He was able to explain the history of Pompeii in exacting detail that brought life to the ruins. Then our driver, who hardly spoke to us at all except to greet us at the pickup site of our hotel, drove us to Mt Vesuvius. THE DRIVER THEN DROPPED US IN THE PARKING LOT OF MOUNT VESUVIUS AND TOLD US WE HAD ONLY ONE HOUR TO COMPLETE THE CLIMB AND RETURN TO THE PARKING LOT. I’M 65 AND IN GOOD SHAPE, BUT THE OVERT THREAT OF LEAVING US IN THE PARKING LOT WAS OBVIOUS. THE TIME AT Mt VESUVIUS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE 2 HOURS. A 30- 45 MINUTE CLIMB UP and 20-30 OBSERVATION AT THE SUMMIT THEN A 20-30 min DESCENT would be sufficient. We were just short of the caldera when my 45 minute timer went off. We immediately turned around and entered the parking lot at the 65 minute mark. Just in time for the driver to arrive.
Beni was a fabulous tour guide! She was organized down to the final detail. She was very knowledgeable and kept the group entertained with interesting facts! Thank you for a wonderful day!
Brilliant tour guide Desiere, very knowledgeable and witty. Kept the kids age 15 and 12 entertained too. Pompei too hot for an August visit but she expertly worked around that.
Our family of four spent the day with Fabio who drove us in a comfortable vehicle to Pompeii. We picked up Paola, our Pompeii guide along the way. Fabio gave us background information of the area during the drive. He was a safe driver and very professional. We spent 2-3 hours at Pompeii where we skipped the lines and learned about the city and it’s buildings and special findings all along. Paola was knowledgeable and an all around great guide. After Pompeii, Fabio brought us to a cute terrace cafe overlooking Sorrento and Naples on the way to Vesuvius. We spent 1.5 hours at Vesuvius where we climbed to il gran cone. Such a site to see! On the way back to our hotel, Fabio shared some more personal stories of the area and treated us to one of the local treats (so good!). It was a perfect day. Highly recommend.
During my tour, which was well organized, I lost my credit card. The organization had found him. This was later issued at a coffee shop in Naples. My thanks are great.
We had an incredible day visiting the amazing Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius with this tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and our driver was great. Highly recommmended.
Grazie a Raffaella abbiamo trascorso due ore piacevolissime immerse nella storia !!!!!!!! Grazie Leonarda e Gianluigi
Exceptional day, we left in 2 from Sorrento at 8:30 Roberta greeted us (the guide in Italian and English, 10 cum laude!😘). We leave by private bus, during the trip to Pompeii he told us very well all the characteristics of the coast. Once we arrived in Pompeii Massimo welcomed us (the second guide, where he gave us radio lines to listen to him, also 10 praise!), his way of explaining Pompeii was fantastic in fact from children to adults knew how to capture attention! After a morning full of notions, a nice stop at the restaurant located at the entrance of Pompeii, where price and quality of lunch excellent 👍🏻. We leave for the second tour to Mount Vesuvius, Roberta welcomed us back, during the bus ride she told us everything there was to know about Vesuvius! Once arrived the guide left us free, equip yourself with hiking shoes the climb is hard .. but the breathtaking view! The higher you climb, the cooler you will feel! The satisfactory return! Experience not to be forgotten, 100% recommend you will not regret it!
Our guide Roberta was very good accompanied us at best in these fantastic places thanks also to the driver Antonio! You absolutely must try
We took a beautiful full-day tour to discover Pompeii (2 and a half hour guided tour) and Mount Vesuvius (1 and a half hour independent tour). The guides Roberta and Vincenzo are both very well prepared and the driver Marco was great at driving through the winding roads of the Sorrento peninsula and Mount Vesuvius. I would recommend it to anyone who is in Sorrento! In addition, the agency also provided us with the transfer to Positano at a discounted price and Graziana was very kind in helping to find the best solution.
