Pompeii is a vast archaeological site in southern Italy’s Campania region, near the coast of the Bay of Naples. Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The preserved site features excavated ruins of streets and houses that visitors can freely explore.
The Forum was located at the heart of Pompeii, and was a thriving market and trade center, and also had many connections to politics.
Dominated by the Vesuvius with its statues of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, the temple was the Capitolium, similar to the one located in the Ancient Rome. The statues were highly placed to be visible to those passing in the Forum.
The Macellum of Pompeii was located on the Forum and as the provision market of Pompeii was one of the focal points of the ancient city. The building was constructed in several phases. When the earthquake of 62 CE destroyed large parts of Pompeii, the Macellum was also damaged.
Via dell’Abbondanza was the ancient main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, which ran across the city in the direction east/west from the Forum to the Porta Sarno. In ancient times the street was crowded and noisy with many shops, workshops ("officinae”), cafes, snack-bars and restaurants for food and drink.
The Forum Baths are located behind the Temple of Jupiter and date back to the years immediately after the founding of the colony of veterans by General Silla (80 BC). Women's and men's quarters had separate entrances. The men's section presents an apodyterium (dressing room), used also as a tepidarium (for medium temperature baths), frigidarium (for cold baths) and calidarium (for hot baths). Like many buildings in Pompeii, the baths were heavily damaged during the earthquake of 62 AD.
The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most famous brothel in the ruined Roman city of Pompeii. It is of particular interest for the erotic paintings on its walls. Lupanar is Latin for "brothel". The Pompeii lupanar is also known as Lupanare Grande.
The House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno) is one of the largest and most luxurious private residences in Pompeii, occupying an entire city block. Named after the iconic bronze statue of a dancing faun found in its main atrium, the house is a masterpiece of Roman architecture and Hellenistic influence. It is most famous for housing the magnificent Alexander Mosaic, which depicts the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. With its two peristyle gardens and intricate floor mosaics, it remains a powerful symbol of the immense wealth and sophisticated taste of the city's eliteThe house belonged to Quintus Poppaeus Sabinus of the Poppei family, relatives of the Empress Poppea Sabina, Nero's second wife.
The Large Theater of Pompeii was built from the Romans on the slope of a hill located in the area; they took advantage of the natural depression of the mountain to create a majesty auditorium divided into 5 sectors. On the stage were played tragedies of the Greco-Roman traditions.
The Basilica is the most sumptuous building of the Forum, and its space was used to carry out business and for the administration of justice
Reach the crater's edge at 1.280 mt to admire a breathtaking panorama on the Gulf of Naples. The surface of the path is uneven, but it' ll be well worth it. Following the devastating eruption, it was named after the Roman God of the Flame and Metal Forgery – Vulcan
Drop off at 1.000 mt high on the Volcano. Mount Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 km east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. In 79 AD eruption destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Mount Vesuvius doesn’t stand alone. While the ‘main peak’ is named Vesuvius, there is another mountain which is attached to it, Monte Somma. is listed among the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. Volcanologists and geologists alike agree that the next volcanic eruption is overdue and that when it does happen, it will be big. The layer of magma that lies beneath Vesuvius measures a huge 154 square miles; this is why scientists monitore the volcano’s activity 24/7.

A brilliant experience on our day trip today. Our guides Max and Mimi led the group with charm, wit and endless knowledge. Sam drove the bus with skill putting a nervous passenger like me at ease. True professionals. Would highly recommend.
Luigi was a fantastic driver/ guide and very informative. We very much enjoyed his company on the way to Pompeii and Vesuvius. Monica was an extremely knowledgeable guide at Pompeii. A fount of information and a pleasure to meet.
Our driver Vincenzo was informative and personable. He arrived on time and ride was very comfortable. He was accommodating and shared some ideas of favorite places. Our tour guide in Pompei ruins was Nino and also very good at explaining the various sights. We had a great time and felt like we saw the highlights of pompei
Tour guide in Pompeii was terrible.. left us after an hour and told us to wander the park I followed other tour guides instead .. they were much more informative Not worth the money
We had a wonderful day with our host/guide/driver, Luigi, who spoke great English and gave us a great full day tour. Luigi introduced us to Sebastiano, a personal guide at Pompeii with huge knowledge, and he made a reservation at a lovely restaurant on the road up to Vesuvius. Graziana, our contact at Travel Etc had excellent advice and helped us plan our visit. We would definitely recommend this company for tours and transfers on the Amalfi Coast.
The driver picked us up from the hotel and drove straight to Pompeii, where a guide was already waiting for us. The personal tour was fascinating and informative. We could tell the guide, Francesco, was genuinely passionate about the subject. After Pompeii, the driver took us to Vesuvius. The climb was challenging, but certainly worthwhile. After that, the driver took us back to the hotel. Long day, but a wonderful experience all around.
Our tour of Pompeii yesterday was incredible! We were picked up by Fabio, who was the kindest driver and wonderful person. He drove us safely to Pompeii and was a delight to chat with and even stopped on the way back for us to get gelato! There we met with Carmine, our tour guide who was fantastic. He knew anything and everything there is to know about the history of Pompeii. He was so passionate in the way he spoke about the landscape. He was such a kind hearted person and taught us so much. He answered every question we had. We are so happy we could get to know him and learn from him! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a great time. We loved every minute!!!
Fabulous day - Driver, Pepe from Prestige Limo Sorrento, arrived on time, nice person, great driver & very comfortable Mercedes’ - drive was through nice scenery & Pepe provided some commentary along the way & gave me very clear instructions re how day would go. Hugo, guide for Pompeii was waiting, excellent English, detailed knowledge of history & the site and being solo, we skipped all the queues, even inside the site At first was surprised the driver was not being my guide up Vesuvius but I realised it wasn’t necessary - relatively easy walk to the top and well worth the effort (even though bit scary at times if you’re scared of heights) and drive back very pleasant. All went like clockwork and very nice people
This was a fantastic tour!! It’s difficult to get around in Positano so I loved that this tour handled all transportation needs. Our tour guide Roberta was knowledgeable and I loved her high energy. Pompeii is HUGE so she makes sure you see all the most important sites and is full of fascinating facts and stories for everything you look at. My husbands favorite part was Mount Vesuvius. You’re able to go right up to the crater! Be sure to bring a jacket, it’s chilly at that elevation. This tour was a nice change of pace from the Amalfi coast for something really unique. I’d highly recommend!!
Our guide was great! Carmela was knowledgeable but not annoying. Planned our time perfect. She is the best! The restaurant- complete disappointment. Not organized, food is below mediocre. You have to beg people to bring you cheese to your pasta. I’d rather had sandwich from the vendor on the street.
Ornella and Luigi were great. I dont recommend drinking the wine for lunch if you are going to hike Vesuvius.
Tour was amazing and guide was great! Pasquale was very knowledgable and informative. Really fun day - would highly recommend !
Carmela was wonderful. I highly recommend this tour group and they really brought Pompeii to life. Would definitely use them again. 5 stars.
Hugo, our Pompei you guide, was extremely informative, patient with my photos, tailored the tour for us, and exceptionally personable with quick jokes. Salvatore, our driver, was a quiet, genuinely pleasant man with an easy smile. We enjoyed their company immensely and would recommend both to anyone and everyone.
Hugo was a really superb guide- he offered a range of useful information in a humorous and thoughtful way. The whole trip was well organised - timings were perfect with no sense of rush and careful attention to Covid precautions without it being thrust down your throat! It actually felt like we were on holiday!
Roberta was a fantastic tour guide - very knowledgeable. Roberta was happy to help with any questions. With Vesuvius, it's 100% worth taking this tour as tour groups are dropped off much closer to the top and tickets are sorted for you.
My boyfriend and I had a great time on this trip yesterday! We loved the visit to Pompeii as well as the walk to the crater of mount Vesuvius. Sasa, our tour guide, was very entertaining as well as informative and made our visit to Pompeii especially interesting. We loved his enthusiasm and passion throughout the day. We would definitely recommend booking this tour, and asking for Sasa as your guide if you can. Just make sure you bring some water as Pompeii especially was very hot. Thank you for a great day!
A brilliant day. A driver collected me from Positano and dropped me to Sorrento to meet the group/tour guide. Roberta, our tour guide throughout, was excellent. She made you feel very welcome and gave lots of interesting information. Pompeii was fantastic. Vito, our tour guide, was excellent. Be prepared to be walking for around 3 hours though (bring sun cream and water!). We had free time to eat in a variety of places before going to Mount Vesuvius. Hiking up Mount Vesuvius was a special experience. Thanks all for a great day!
We today travelled with Travel etc to visit Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius from Positano and couldn’t be happier. The BEST service and day! Firstly, before booking, they were very prompt with answering my questions as I wanted to arrange to get to Naples after the tour and were able to arrange a driver at an extra cost to take us there. On the day, our tour guide liaises with the driver, saving us so much stress and hassle! Our guide Sasa, and driver Were brilliant. Sasa clearly has a passion for his Pompeii history, and it shows through in his knowledge but also his guidance in showing what has formed historical interpretations. If you want to lean more than ‘this is a pot, this is a wall’ and more of ‘this is WHY the Pompeii people made things this way, and this is what has made people decipher this’ then this is the tour for you! The walk of Mt Vesuvius was great also, we had a good amount of time to challenge ourselves to the walk, and go at our own paces. It is a self guided walk but really a guide at this point is not needed, Sasa explained so much about the eruptions on the way driving up, and it meant we could go at our own pace. Our group was 14 people so not too big. We used headsets to tour Pompeii but could hear Sasa directly. I HIGHLY recommend booking this tour.
Fabulous trip. Our guide, Rose was an excellent guide and did a great job. Highly recommend this tour
Small group of just 7 which was perfect. Our guide was Sasa and he gave us lots of information during the day which made it very enjoyable. Wear your comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water as the heat can be fierce in Pompeii. A great day, would definitely recommend!
This was a great tour! Plenty of time in each place. Pick up and drop off was on time. Our tour guide Ornella was extremely knowledgeable. Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius is a must see.
We enjoyed a fabulous day touring Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius with guide Ornella and driver Giuseppe. Ornella is engaging, knowledgeable, and made Pompeii come alive during our tour. We toured on a very overcast day which made for a comfortable day. During our 2 plus hour tour we viewed selected highlights of Pompeii...the theatre, forum, brothel, shops, and more. I could easily have spent an entire day if not more at this amazingly well preserved historical site. Vesuvius was interesting, the overcast foggy conditions limited visibility at the top...but provided ideal hiking conditions. A fabulous day, well worth the price.
This was one of my favorite experiences in Italy! The Pompeii archeological site was really cool and well preserved. The climb to Mount Vesivius is pretty intense but definitely worth it to see the scenery on top. Definitely recommend!
Very happy I took this day trip from Positano to see Pompeii and hike Mt. Vesuvius! Our tour guide Gennaro and driver Alfonso were incredible. Gennaro was very knowledgeable and funny. Pompeii was incredible and hiking Vesuvius was very cool!
Nala was an amazing tour guide. She knows her history, made us feel like we were back in the time when Pompeii was in its hay day. She had a great sense of humor which made the ride and tour fly by. A must-do.
Our tour guide (Gennaro) and driver (Carmine) were fantastic and really made every effort to make our tour enjoyable and memorable. They paid particular attention to the well being of our 2 young sons and were very inclusive of them .
This small group tour was everything we hoped it would be. Our tour guide Daniela was very nice and knowledgable. In the limited time we had in Pompeii, she took us to the most interesting sights and explained everything to us in great detail and so it was quite the educational experience. At Vesuvius, she explained the natural surroundings and we had time to wander around the crater and take in this impressive sight. Our driver Carlo got us around safely and punctually and we felt were in good hands. All and all, a very great day trip to one of the most fascinating archeological sights in Italy and a great chance to get up and close with a volcano. I would recommend this trip to anyone who's considering this. Thank you Daniela and Carlo for a wonderful day!
Daniella and Vincenzo were great! Daniella was a very knowledgeable tour guide and very personable and pleasant! Vincenzo has great driving skills!! The sites were amazing to see!!
We really enjoyed this trip; the only downside was that our guide stopped guiding us when we reached Vesuvius and did the climb. (She stayed in the bus.) The tour would have been better if she had continued with us up the volcano and provided more geography/history commentary along the way.
Great day tour from Positano. Easy to get to meeting point in town, walkable from most areas. Save a lot of money over private transfers. Great tour guide for Pompeii. Our group was small in early June, 6 total in a big van. My Vesuvius was a fun hike up a well trodden wide path with good views. Right price point, drove straight to sites. Guide knew her stuff!
Very interesting! Enjoyed it thoroughly. We had a good guide that was to the point and easy to understand. Lunch was good and filling. The hike up Mt Vesuvius was challenging, but doable with a decent amount of fitness. In the very hot months it would not be fun.
Pompeii and Mt. V themselves are fabulous, but we booked a ‘small group’ tour. Well, there were around 25-30 people, it was very hard to hear out of the headsets and the pizza included WAS NOT part of the package. We all sat at a subpar restaurant and paid 14 EUR for either pizza or pasta. Our tour guide was super friendly, cute and knowledgeable. We both feel like we missed some key areas of Pompeii. I saw other tour guides talk about things that we did not hear. However, I was very grateful to have seen Pompeii and Mt. V.
This was a great tour! As for the tour itself, Pompeii is so huge, we saw just a small part of it and it is so impressive. Mount Vesuvius involved more hiking up a pretty steep slope than we realized, but was well worth it, not only to see the middle of the crater, but the views of Naples and other areas made it well worth it. As for the tour company, we were very pleased overall. Our driver navigated the busy and narrow streets with ease, as well as helping to direct other buses who were not so adept. Our guide, Cornello, was awesome! I loved her!!! She was enthusiastic, energetic, spoke English well, was very knowledgeable, was able to adjust the tour based on a holiday going on, and patiently answered all of our questions. For lunch she took us to a restaurant that we would not have found ourselves, and for about 14 euro, we had a 3 course meal and a bottle of wine. I felt like everything (except the cost of lunch) was included in this tour, which made it easy for us as far as not have to do any thinking and figuring things out. I'm so glad I researched and booked this before we arrived, because once we arrived in Positano, we found that the hotel concierges were not really big on helping us book these types of tours. I highly recommend this!!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius tour. It was really interesting to be immersed in the history of Pompeii and imagine ourselves back in the time. Our tour guide Roberta was excellent and gave us a nice taste of the flavor of Pompeii. The trek to Mount Vesuvius was a long one, more walking and steeper than I imagined it would be. Good shoes are a must as the trail is often uneven and rocky. It is easy enough to do for anyone in reasonably good shape and the view on the way up and once you get to the top is nothing short of spectacular, well worth the trek. Lunch between Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius was a bit of a cattle call and the food was just so so, but it was inexpensive (just 14 euro) and we were hungry, so it was all good. The bus was prompt and comfortable and the drive from Positano was beautiful too.
First, I must say that our tour guide (Roberta) was a real professional, and provided great information about Pompeii. The driver was also the best, and drove very safely. Roberta was extremely knowledgeable and made the tour interesting and even added humor along the way. The tour was well organized, and the restaurant that was selected for lunch was great and affordable. After climbing Mt. Vesuvius, we stopped at the Limoncello Factory, and this was an added bonus to the tour. Bravo Roberta for making our day grand!
I really enjoyed this tour. Amanuela (sp?) was our guide and she was great. Very informative and had a very sweet and funny personality. When I asked her about her experience, she said she's been doing these tours for 9 years, so I knew we were in good hands. She told us exactly what was going to happen during the tour and even though we were seeing the "highlights" of Pompeii - we gained a lot of knowledge from it. We had beautiful weather for Pompeii but it was more cloudy and cooler on Mt. Vesuvius. The climb to the top is definitely worth it (but also a bit of a challenge)! Overall - if you have a free day on the Amalfi Coast - I recommend this tour 100%.
This tour was well planned and very interesting. They arrived on time. Carmela was good tour guide with lots of information. Time was spent wisely seeing all the highlight. The walk up Vesuvius was a little challenging but definitely a must! They really could do without the pizza stop not worth it.
We were not told we would spend an hour and a half in a mini bus picking up other people before driving back upon ourselves to Pompeii from Positano. The tour of Pompeii was good but then at the end we had to walk in 35 degree heat along the main road to a restaurant obviously the tour guide had a deal with, to make this the meeting point. We arrived on time and then spent half an hour waiting for the guide to finish before walking back along the hot, busy road to our bus.We were told the tour included a walk up Vesuvius but minutes before arriving the guide infor, med us we had to pay 10 Euros to walk up the mountain.Having already paid entrance fees for Pompeii on top of the tour fee, this was I ( and others on the trip) very misleading and otherwise meant, you could just hang out at a cafe at the end of the path for an hour.Took another 3 hours to get back again.Loved Pompeii but would consider your options before booking with this company.

We met the bus at Pompeii because it was much less of a drive for us. The bus was on time. Our guide was very good. The only thing that might have been better was the weather. It was very hot and there is no cover within the ruins. That aside, it was an amazing experience walking through the ruins learning about their way of life, the diverse population, etc. The ride up to Mt. Vesuvius was a learning experience as were able to see the ash that covered the mountainside as we drove up. Many of us sat at the little cafe/gift shop as others climbed to the crater. Returning to Pompeii, we had lunch at a restaurant. It was clean and cool but the lunch could have been a bit more interesting. We were at long tables - the servers brought plates of slices of pizza. There were four of us at the end of table. The plate given us by the server had three slices of pizza. Later they brought another plate with three more slices. This service could be a bit better. Overall, a wonderful guide and tour.

My family loved Pompeii. It was a very hot day and there isn't much shade so you need to be prepared to sweat a little (a lot), but its worth it. So cool to see an actual Roman city and walk the streets like they did. The hike of Mt Vesuvius is a little daunting if you aren't in shape, so be for warned, but the view a the to is tremendous and really puts this whole story into perspective. Our guide was great, as always.
The place was buried in ash when the volcano exploded, which had the side effect of preserving it in great condition.
It was a very interesting day Well organised and very interesting The only down size was for the money we paid we had to pay another 10 euro each to walk up mountain which is quiet a steep walk and 15euro to go into Pompeii Made it quite expensive day

We had a great time! Our guide Annalisa was friendly, knowledgeable, and funny. I feel we had ample time to see the highlights of Pompeii even though you could spend days there. Lunch after Pompeii was fantastic and more than I expected. There was plenty of time at Vesuvius to take everything in, get some souvenirs for the kids, and enjoy some local wine. That is of course, if you are adequately conditioned. Anyone with difficulty hiking would not have enough time to enjoy everything.

Enjoyable, informative tour through Pompeii with a very kind, knowledgeable tour guide, Annalisa who made it fun! The short hike up Mt Vesuvius offers panoramic views - highly recommended.

Prompt pick up and delivery. Enjoyable, educational and entertaining trip through Pompeii and climb up Mt Vesuvius offered panoramic views. Also highly recommend our tour guide, Annalisa who was kind, entertaining and enjoyable!
Die Führer waren super und sehr informativ und freundlich. Der Fahrer war freundlich und fuhr sehr gur.
