The amazing part of this museum is that it’s a vision of a private citizen who is the guide. It was fascinating to hear about the history of Sorrento through the thoughts of characters. We also spent some time with the owner who was happy to indulge us with answers to our questions. He also explained the renovation of the building to house the museum. It was all very interesting and fascinating. I would say it is geared to adults. It’s worth a stop.

Reviews
We took advantage of this little museum on a day when it was raining. The people of Sorrento have done a nice job of presenting a brief history of their town. The video of Mt. Vesuvius erupting was a bit strange - too many strobe lights. But overall, we enjoyed learning about the town and the people who lived there.
Enjoyed this tour, found the history of Sorrento engaging and interesting with the use of well put together AI visuals and videos. Our guide, Sabrina, (I hope I have the name right) was so sweet and polite and interested.
Excellent guide, bringing all exhibits to life. Sabrina was engaging and helpful making the visit a real pleasure.
This museum was very disappointing considering the reviews. Apart from the Vesuvius experience, I think most of the videos would be on YouTube. Certainly not worth the €13 entry fee when Pompeii was only €18.
We really enjoyed the places included in the tour — they were well worth visiting. Our tour guide, Antonia was excellent. She was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. We would definitely recommend her.
We all enjoyed the museum experience but felt a little rushed around each exhibit and it would have been good to get the opportunity to ask questions. The effort that has been put in to curating each story is clear and it was great to find out some stories/legends from the area. Give it a go if you like history and want to hear about the traditions and way of life from the past.
Well, I am lost for words but will try to find some. It's probably the worst 13€ x 2 I have spent. All you do is stand in front of a screen that gives you some info before you move to the next screen, then the next ......... I did not see the end screen or show of the eruption as when we got near the stairs, we made an exit. There are many good reports, so each to their own. We still laugh about it now, so we did get memories from the visit.
It’s not perfect and a small number of customer reviews are negative, but this is a relatively new exhibition charting Sorrento’s history and legend, using different media, using a previously disused space dating back to the 11th century. Themed audio visual tableaux are followed by an immersive ‘eruption of Vesuvio’ experience, then more traditional displays of local artefacts and images of famous visitors and personalities over the years. The whole is carefully thought out and well constructed, and is well worth an hour of your time and the modest entry fee.
This has to be the absolute worst tour I've ever experienced, ridiculous beyond words, don't waste your money, came away with no knowledge of Sorrento and as for the clip of Vesuvius erupting....no words
Really good experience of the history of sorrento. Quite quick but worth a look as there aren't that many museums in sorrento.
This was definitely an ‘experience’. It was so bad it was good. Pricey like but here’s the run down. You are led down a set of steps in the dark by a girl who has a torch so you don’t trip over yourself. She then proceeds to show you various video clips created by a mixture of stories of people throughout ‘s history with a large splash of artistic licence. These musings are then put through google translate and spoken with an AI generator. She will take you to a recreation of the town from years ago that is in need of a good dusting. The spiders of sorrento now inhabit the place. You will be led to a room that has a large projection of mount Vesuvius as the piste de resistance. Complete with strobe effects and dry ice. A recreation of the eruption of 79ad is played that resembles a bad CGI film from 1987. My boyfriend enjoyed it as something we can look aback on and laugh at. Don’t take it too seriously 😂
Lasting 1 hr, this audio visual guided tour of the history of Sorrento was very interesting and provided excellent info on the many facets that make the Sorrento of today. Situated in the original crypt of the Church, it is very atmospheric. Good information on the many people who have visited, made their mark or been influenced by Sorrento.
Very interesting and informative. Worth a visit. Information was clear and special effects impressive. Our children are adults. I don't think the exhibition would be interesting for under 10 years of age.
This is a great compact and interactive museum with a guide provided for €13. It lasts approximately an hour. If you are visiting for the day or here for longer you can fit this in easily. Very interesting and informative with interactive experience of volcanic eruption
Really poor value for money. The strangest collection of non- related stories and at 13 euros each for less than 30 minutes expensive, even by sorrento standards
Very disappointing and overpriced. The tour wasn’t particularly informative and I’m afraid to say it was pretty boring. It was 13 euros for half an hour of being lead around in the dark to look at various uninspiring video clips. I would not recommend this and am shocked to see so many good reviews on here.
My family came with an appetite to learn about the history of Sorrento but left underwhelmed and having not learned much. The visit consists of being led around a series of incongruent multimedia snippets. The model of Sorrento in 1900 was quite charming and the eruption simulator was atmospheric, but not much more can be said to the museum’s credit, I’m afraid.
This was so good ! My teenage son and I felt like we stepped into another world with our wonderful guide and creator , he was fabulous and completely engaged. It was really something, loved the experience
The guide was good but it was pretty much all in one room. Lights just turned on and off the spotlight different displays. Really not much to see. Not as I expected from the listing
This is an excellent way to experience the fascinating history of Sorrento. A small museum in a 2000 year old space designed and built by the gentlemen on the ticket counter, you can ‘meet’ the people from history who shaped the city over the years. You can also experience the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius! Well worth a visit.
We booked to visit here on a rainy afternoon based on the TripAdvisor ratings. What a great move it was. The staff were welcoming and seemed genuinely gratefully for our business, which is rare these days. The tour guide was so lovely and clearly passionate about doing her job well. We all really enjoyed the exhibition, even our teenager (which really says something). It was fascinating to hear, see and feel all of the stories coming to life in front of us. Fantastic value for money, and just the right length of time too.
Although a couple of the media exhibits were interesting, and the model of Sorrento was beautifully made, it was just vastly overpriced for a museum of this size and type. The owner who guided us through was friendly and knowledgeable and had the price been reasonable we would have been happy to recommend.
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly throughout our visit. They offered us free fans on arrival which was very helpful in the heat that travelled in from the street. The multimedia was very good and the recordings were very clear - something we had worried about due to my dad being hard of hearing. The recordings were very informative and gave us a good idea of Sorrento. I would recommend doing this trip towards the beginning of your holiday to give you a good overview of the area and ideas for ventures outside of the city. The multimedia representing what the explosion of Vesuvius would've looked was amazing. It was very well done and really helped to put into context our tour of Pompeii that we did earlier in the holiday. Although we all enjoyed this, because of the timings between all of the recordings, you had to move quickly between each section of the museum and there was not a lot of time to ask questions of take pictures in-between without missing some of the audio of the next recording. Overall, this was a good experience and we recommend anyone new to Sorrento to have a look.
Fabulous visual and factual history. Vesuvius erupting totally illustrated the horror. The guide was exceptional
Definitely recommend this experience. Great detailed information displayed in a multi media fashion alongside a guide explaining the history of Sorrento. Worth every penny.
Really good museum, good information to know when you go to sorrento, interactive museum and nice people there.
Wow well worth a visit while you are in sorrento. Very informative about how sorrento got its name by legend, all the famous people who have visited, it was worth every penny
Exceptional experience when we visited this museum. We had walked past it at least 3 times before deciding we should pop in and it was very interesting. We had our guide show us the exhibits and towards the end there is a mount Vesuvius eruption experience that was awesome. Definitely recommend this as a must.
This was great. Really enjoyed seeing the history behind some of the local sites and legends. It gave an added perspective to our holiday. Kids enjoyed it too. People were friendly. Well worth a visit if you are interested in the history of Sorrento.
the tour was very interesting . the tour guide certainly knew her stuff. you don't need more than an hour for the whole tour highly recommended especially the eruption at the end
Well worth a visit to see an unusual and Interesting history of Sorrento. A good way to spend 45 minutes right in the heart of the town and set within an authentic Roman wall. Our guide was knowledgeable and gave more Information on each exhibit if needed after the commentary. Support this new museum, a lot of effort has been made to make it an unusual and educational exhibition.
Extremely well done. Very interesting stories about the history of Sorrento. It made my visit to the town much more meaningful and enjoyable.
This was a very interesting and different museum, worth a visit. Great volcanic eruption experience.
Beautifully curated and well told history of Sorrento. The various stories are imaginitively presented and the exhibition space is ideal for purpose and in itself a very interesting space. While approx 40 minutes from start to finish, it is excellent value for money and driven by a passionate proprietor.
A definite must see stop when in Sorrento. Only takes about an hour to get through but you’re able to see interactive history of Sorrento and even be immersed in a multimedia eruption of Vesuvius. I really liked the full scale model of ancient Sorrento. A lot of work and detail went into the exhibits here. Was even more authentic since it’s in an underground 2000 year old Roman tunnel.
Great experience! Nice overview of the history of Sorrento with immersive exhibits and a nice tour guide. Very cool, would recommend.
We have revisited this year [we previously visited for the first time last year], and can say the exhibition is much enhanced for us, as the audio has been re dubbed into English, with subtitles in French [avec sous-titres en français]. Last year the audio was Italian only, so this has been a great investment and rewarded with a much better understanding on our part. This year there has also been the addition of a pictorial display of royals and other state dignitaries that have visited the region, along with film stars/real celebrities and films over the years who have used the locations here. Plenty of mementos/gifts available in the shop, and excellent advice from Antonio, though not all staff speak good English, but not to hold that against them as it's better than my Italian I'm sure. Definitely still worth a visit/re-visit every time we're in Sorrento, not to be missed, I assure you. Add it to your essential to do list.
I have never left a Trip Adviser review previously however I felt impelled to having experienced this lovely museum earlier today. The owner and the tour guide are clearly passionate about the museum and Sorrento. For €13 you are guided around the museum's interactive exhibits, including a simulation of Vesuvius' 79AD eruption. The owner spoke to us before we left and told us it had taken four years to excavate the Roman tunnel in which the museum is set, as it was his dream to open this museum. He also built the impressively detailed model of Sorrento town exhibit which took 3 years! These facts alone warrant the already reasonable entrance fee. Would highly recommend this museum if you are visiting Sorrento. You can linger after the tour to read the exhibits for as long or as little as you like. We spent just under an hour there. Thanks for a lovely end to our Italian holiday.
Very interesting and informative, there was just the two of us and the guide who was very knowledgeable. Unusual format, talking paintings and a great scale model of old Sorrento all by torch light. There is also a room that gives you the experience of the eruption of Vesuvius from the perspective of a Pompeii resident. Takes about an hour to see and cost €13
Wonderful! Finally a museum with some history of Sorrento. Very well done, interesting stories, original presentations, beautiful surroundings.
Useless and boring. Only English speaking and films. Very expensive for a half hour non experience. Not what I expected and feel very cross.
Brilliant museum with very interesting features. Particularly the room that gives you the experience of the Vesuvius eruption. My guide Manuela was absolutely great, very fun and super informative. Would definitely recommend.
This museum is small and very well done. I would highly recommend it to learn more about the history in Sorrento and Pompeii. It is reasonably priced and does not take a lot of time. The personalize tours are great.
This was a great little museum, newly opened in 2022. The owner was very proud of his place, and spent time at the end of the visit explaining how he had restored the ancient Roman building over the last few years. The museum gave an interesting insight to Sorrento, with videos and a personal guide. The simulation of the eruption that destroyed Pompeii was particularly good.
Great museum to give you a flavour of Sorrento and its past. The multi media presentation maintains your interest and gives you some interesting facts about the city and those associated with it. You only need about 40 minutes for your visit. Young children may like the talking pictures and the eruption of Vesuvius.
One of the most unique museums in the world. Although not packed with artifacts, it gives a great overview of Sorrento history in a very intimate, entertaining and high tech way. You get a personal tour guide with the ticket. The tour is short and sweet. With a very atmospheric "volcano room."
This is a wonderful, concise introduction to Sorrento, including multi-media presentations on local mythology, history, sights, culture, and famous people. We also had a guide to conduct us around the exhibits, and add additional explanations. We would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Sorrento as one of their first experiences.
Informative and used different forms of media to guide the tour. You are accompanied by a guide but for the most part, the exhibits are self driven. Covers main history, good brief history for cloudy/rainy day.
The tour cost my us $24eur and was worth every penny. One of the best tours we have taken in the past 2 weeks. Our guide Manuela was able to walk us around and answer all our questions. We highly recommend this tour when you first arrive as many places we visited in the area were mentioned ( great info prior to seeing the area.
