Itinerary
Transfer by bus to Herculaneum and visit of the ruins with our authorized guide for an archeologial tour of 1.5 hrs. Once a small and sophisticated Roman city, Herculaneum was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The site is still perfectly preserved, has remains of streets, houses and villas excavated that visitors can admire. Please note the itinerary may vary based on guide discretion
The house of the Hotel is a house of roman times, buried during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 and found following the archaeological excavations of Herculaneum. The house of the Hotel is located on the edge of the hill, in a panoramic position, with its two thousand hundred and fifty square meters is the largest house of Herculaneum so far discovered and is also the only one of the city to own a spa district was for these reasons considered at first to be a hotel.
The Sacellum of the Augustales was built near the forum when Emperor Augustus was still alive and in power. It is a building with a quadrangular plan that preserves the splendid frescoes that represent Hercules entering Olympus in the company of Jupiter, Juno, Minerva and Hercules against Achelous. The janitor’s skeleton was found in his room lying on the bed.
The luxurious house with sea view terrace belonged to Q. Granius Verus, a slave freed shortly before the destruction of Herculaneum. In the garden there are two statues of deer assaulted by a pack of dogs, from these the house takes its name
The house of the black salon owes its name to its party hall entirely painted in black with geometric patterns. In this house were found waxed tablets of L. Venidius Ennychus who was supposed to have owned the house. The tablets speak of her eligibility for Augustale, the purchase of a slave, and the birth of a daughter.
The skeleton house is probably the result of the aggregation of three smaller buildings, and its name derives from the discovery of human remains in a second-floor room in 1831.
Truly enchanting are the mosaics in glass paste, (very expensive for the time), with floral and hunting scenes and in a central position the mosaic with Neptune and Amphitrite, (the marine deity and his companion)

We had been to Pompeii the previous day but found the tour we had at Ercolano far more enjoyable. Our guide Monica was brilliant - she is an archaeologist and had worked on the excavation works there and was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable throughout the tour. It was busy of course but in a smaller group than we had at Pompeii it was easier to move around and stay together. Its a much smaller site too so obviously that helped. Fascinating stuff! It was about an hour transfer from Sorrento by coach.
Herculaneum is a fascinating archeological site that offers different insights to those found at Pompeii. The tour was interesting and worthwhile - the guide being an archeologist added considerably to the background and context of what we were shown.
Great tour guide overall great experience
Lelo Raphael was a great guide lots of experience. He was a child while his father worked there as an archeologist. Not as much walking as Pompeii. More detailed
We loved visiting Herculaneum and learning about its history. Our archeologist Monica was very knowledgeable. We would highly recommend this tour. A tip to do the morning tour in peak season as the weather can get hot.
Interesting visit to Herculaneum. We saw Pompeji last year, so it was nice to see an excavation with more stories and better preserved artifacts. Two hours are fine to do the tour in. Even though it was very hot, some of the buildings offered shade.
This tour was great. I had done Pompeii before but was traveling with a friend that had not. I'm glad I followed the recommendations and opted for this site instead. The tour itself was organized and efficient. The guide at the site was very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient.
Well organized, half day trip. Communication, pick up, mini-bus etc. all good and, most importantly, a fascinating site to visit with a good on-site guide giving a two- hour tour (just about right)
Fantastic trip, took so many photos! Our guide, who was very knowledgeable, brought history to life. Amazing seeing the archaeological site, walking in the steps of the inhabitants of the time. Loved it!
A great day out exploring Pompeii and Herculaneum. Our driver, Mario and guides Angelino, Paola and Monica were very professional and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend taking this tour with a visit to a local vineyard for lunch and wine tasting. Brilliant day out!
We had an excellent guide with good English who made it possible to understand what Roman life had been like as well as the story of the volcanic eruption. Otherwise, comfortable coach left on time, friendly staff, good to start early to avoid crowds and heat.
Great guide. Good driver. Would have liked longer at the site. Felt rushed even though we had 1 1/2 hours. Would recommend
The tour was wonderful The guide was fantastic made the whole experience very interesting One of the best tours we’ve ever done
