The pick up was prompt, the vehicle capacious/comfortable. Rui the driver was engaging, friendly, articulate and knowledgeable about wines. The mixed 6 British and 2 Germans bonded well facilitated by Rui.. The vineyard building and tasting very interesting and pleasurable. The visit to Silvres was interesting but the 40 minute free time for personal exploration too brief. This was made more brief because the drop off and pick up point was at a lower level than two of the main attractions - castle and cathedral.

Firstly Rui (Roy) our guide, introduced us to the other three couples who were all very nice people. On the way to Silves Rui’s was very knowledgeable about the wines and corks. We arrived at Silves with enough to visit the castle and walk down to the local market place with plenty of little cafe bars. Then onto Quinta do Faleisa vineyard where the views were wonderful. Tasted a blush, a white then a lovely red, clearly explained to us by the young lady and Rui. Together with a plate of charcuterie and cheese with biscuits. We then had an opportunity to purchase extra glasses or a bottle. Rui then took us through to the production area, and the oak barrels with a full detailed explanation of each wine and how they were produced. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and would recommend it to anyone who is interested or just likes wine! The company who organised the tour offer other experiences as well.
Couldn’t hear him I was in the back seat, spoke very fast. They say they can meet you other places for pick up, but weren’t willing to work with us. So we had to come 1/2 hour from east & then while in the van we went east a 1/2 hour. And the people they booked the day before got picked up at their hotel. Other group of ladies also were picked up where they stayed. A rough ride, not worth 75 a person!!! Only offered dry wines. Our driver gave us the tour, not sure if he worked for the winery?
Great experience overall. We were a group of 4 travelling with 2 seniors. The tour was organized perfectly from start to finish and our guide Filipe, was so knowledgeable and kind. We truly enjoyed our stop in the beautiful town of Silvas and loved relaxing at the winery after our tour enjoying a tasting and tapas. 10/10
Our guide Filipe was a fountain of knowledge! Knew the history of Portugal as well as the wine process! The first stop was the castle at Silves which was good but we didn't have long there to explore fully. Silves an ancient town and looked nice. After trying out 'the sweetest orange juice in Portugal' we headed to Quinta do Frances winery. Nice place and after Filiipe talked us through the wine making procees and seeing the barrels in the cellar we were trated to a cheese and meat platter along with trying 3 wines. We had a nice experience.
Rui was brilliant. Lovely afternoon thank you
Felipe was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions about Portugal. The wine experience was amazing and we loved meeting the other people on the trip. 10/10
Really nice and relaxed afternoon wine tasting! Got to learn more about the local area, and see up close how the wine is made. The wine itself was really good, and our guide was extremely friendly and knowledgable :)
We were looking for a short wine tasting tour and this one fit the bill. We had the option to get picked up at our hotel which was very convenient, then the tour was conducted by Filipe. He was friendly, welcoming and spoke about a lot of the local facts/history that we otherwise would not have known. We visited the castle in Silves which was neat, then went to the winery. The wines were amazing and I would definitely recommend.
A great way to spend an afternoon around Lagos! It was super fun to see the Moorish castle as well as get a tour at the winery. Our tour guide / driver was absolutely fantastic and was very knowledgeable about the region and the wine. Highly recommend!
It was a lovely 31/2 hrs ish Our guide Roy was very pleasant, knowledgeable about wine making, punctual & signposted what we were going to do on a regular basis. Communication was clear & helpful. We had free 40 min to walk to the Silves castle which was nice to do . At the actual wine tasting once he left the bar girls to do the (3 wine) tasting - there was a long wait between glasses & eventually we all bought ourselves a glass of wine. We would have preferred them to get the glasses for tasting once our glasses were empty & then we could have bought ourselves & enjoyed the views of the vineyard rather than wait for agesssss for the tasting wine to arrive. We learnt about the process, saw the barrels, Roy offered to kindly take photos for us , was overall lovely
Filipe was a very courteous and knowledgeable Tour Guide, great humour and very personable with all of his guests. We learned a lot on the trip about the history of the Algarve and the city of Silves and the story of the crazy Frenchman Doctor vineyard which was thoroughly enjoyable; absolutely beautiful wines and bought an extra bottle ourselves to have at the vineyard. the view was incredible and Filipe was great company to have on our journey in the air conditioned van - absolutely five stars ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ . Totally recommend to anyone very much an enjoyable afternoon 🍷
Time spent at sevil Castle could have been a bit longer. The wine tastes experience and walk round wine making fascilty was good and informative. The journey to destination was also good. I would recommend this tour.
What great value for money this trip was. We were picked up on time at the place arranged. We were dropped in Silves to take a walk up to the castle. We would have liked to go into restored church on the way but as we had shorts on we were not allowed in so if this is something you might like to do then please wear suitable attire. Silves was very pretty. We had around 45 minutes to look around and then we met back up and were taken to the vineyard. We were shown inside where the wine is made. I personally would have liked to be shown the vines as well but you could take pictures of these afterwards. A small plate of tapas was served and we sampled 3 wines, Rose, Sauvignon blanc and a red. Riu the guide then arranged a further sample. Considering there were 5 different nationalities in our particular group, we all had a fantastic time. From being picked up to being dropped back off we were out for 4 hours.
Small group tour with very knowledgable driver/tour guide, about the area (if not a little over-enthusiastic talking about himself a lot!). However, he was very friendly and introduced everyone to each other and went out of his way for guests to be able to take photos etc. Wonderful tour. However we would have liked to have longer in Silves, 40 mins was nowhere near enough. An hour and a half would’ve been ideal.
Our guide Rui was fantastic, knowledgeable and friendly. Pick up communicated well and van was cool with air con. Visiting the castle is worth the 3 euro entry to walk around the wall. Winery tour was interesting and the 3 wines we tasted were great. A lovely view and location to sit and drink some wine! A booklet full of information was provided if you wanted even more details on the wine. They were happy to accommodate people who were not red drinkers with an alternative. You could also purchase more glasses if you wanted to try more for only a few euros each which we did! And of course buy bottles and other local goods to take away.
Excellent guide and an excellent winery.
Our wine tasting tour with South Explorers was amazing! From the point of booking to the end of the tour, all the details were well-managed: communication, pick up, drop off, fees, etc. The tour itself was led by our guide, Filipe, who was knowledgable, responsive, fun and flexible. We enjoyed every aspect of this tour and would highly recommend it -- we learned a ton about the area, the culture and the wine! Thanks to South Explorers and Filipe for making our visit to Portugal complete.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ What not to like?! I loved it. Our wine tasting tour with South Explorers was one of the highlights of our trip! Communication was excellent from the start, they messaged us two days before the tour with all the details, including exactly which vehicle would be picking us up, which made everything stress-free. Our guide, Felipe, was fantastic. He was incredibly knowledgeable and seemed to know everything about the region, the wineries, and the wines. We especially enjoyed all the fun facts and interesting stories he shared during the journey to the vineyard, which made the drive just as enjoyable as the tasting itself. The wines were amazing, and my personal favourite was the 2023 young red wine! 🍷🍷🍷absolutely delicious! The winery setting was beautiful, and the whole experience felt well organised, relaxed, and authentic. I would highly recommend South Explorers to anyone looking for a memorable wine-tasting experience. Definitely one of the highlights of our holiday! 🍷✨
Felipe was a great host - loads of knowledge! Really enjoyed our afternoon at the castle and the wine tasting at the vineyard. Would highly recommend
Filipe was a fantastic guide, so knowledgeable and very helpful. 4 hour trip with a lovely stop in Silves then on for some really good wine at the vineyard which we couldn’t leave behind! Good value for money and would highly recommend.
A very insightful guide and good wines. Good to see some of lagos too.
Phillip was absolutely fabulous and so knowledgeable about the history of Lagos & Silves. We enjoyed our stop at the historic castle in Silves & then enjoyed great wine. Would recommend!
Ver my fun time with a combination of exploring small towns and getting a very detailed and interesting vineyard tour! Our tour guide Filipe was engaging and so knowledgeable
The guide , Phillip, was outstanding. Very informative and knowledgeable about the area. We did a stop at Silves before going to wine tasting. At the vineyard the wine was good. 4 different tastings. We didn’t purchase any wine because they could not ship to US. Only would ship to European countries. Overall the trip was great.
We had a super afternoon with Fillippe & the 3 other couples in our group. It was lovely to have a stop in Silvas to explore the castle & cathedral. The wine we got to taste at the winery was delicious. We bought two bottles to take home!! Fillippe was really nice and very knowledgeable about the area. Thanks for a great trip!
We took this tour in May 2026. Our driver/tour guide was Filipe. He was good at providing information about Lagos, the farming business, stork nests (with baby storks), Silves castle, and the Quinta do Frances winery. Filipe gave us plenty of time to enjoy the Silves castle (which is huge, and in remarkable shape given its age). He also provided and intro to the Quinta do Frances wines and took us on a tour of the wine making process. It was a great way to spend an afternoon.
The guide Filipe Simao, I highly recommend. He us so knowledgeable and take the time to explained Portugal's history, sites, plants and birds and the winery history and wine making process. He made recommendation of wines, food we had such a wonderful time.
We were picked up by a private taxi and throughout were given so much local history from Fillepe our tour guide that I really should have written it down. We stopped off for an hour in Silves for a quick walk around then onto the vineyard for the tour and tasting. Great wines and very informative afternoon. Would recommend if you want a fairly low impact tour with not too much walking and a lot of local info
Fillipe was an exceptional tour guide. He provided a detailed history of the region. The wine tour was thorough and very informative. The wine was excellent. I’d highly recommend this tour.
I booked this tour for my dad's birthday and it couldn't have been more perfect. Filipe was an incredible guide with so much knowledge from his 30+ years of tour guiding. He answered every question I had about the region and gave us so many more interesting facts and stories. It's so much more than a wine tour as we stopped at beautiful Silves and got to see parts of the area that we would not have seen on our own. The stop at the winery was just perfect and my dad was treated like a king for his birthday. Thank you so much!
Excellent communication and very knowledgeable on the region and wine making. Fantastic winery visit to Quinta do Frances. Fun personality and kept us on time without being rushed. Offered suggestions on restaurants and historical information on Lagos. Highly recommend Filipe and this company….!
This was the perfect way to spend a day. Our guide Filipe was very knowledgeable and picked us up exactly on time. Silves was very pretty and we will return. The winery experience was excellent and we learned a lot. We can recommend this as a good value trip.
Great afternoon trip from Lagos to the hills and countryside. Silves is beautiful. Interesting and knowledgable tour from Filipe. Wine tasting ends the day nicely.
This was an excellent tour! Filipe was full of local information. We were not expecting to stop in Silvas so that was a nice bonus. The wine tour was informative with great photo opportunities and nice wines. Highly recommend .
Great afternoon, really enjoyed the wine and the castle, although the hill is very steep. Helpful Driver
I took this small group tour with the morning start that gets you to Silves Castle before all the large tour groups.
Our guide, Roy, was extremely knowledgeable and share so much history with us along the way. The wine was excellent and we bought some to bring home.
Filipe is a fantastic tour guide, very knowledgeable on area history and the wine industry of Algarve.
Hi Phillip. I’m not finding a spot where I can leave my review on the site so maybe you can pop this review into the appropriate spot. Rob and I had a great time with you and the group. Your knowledge of the area, its history and its many people was fascinating and shied your love of Portugal. You are a great driver too! We learned a lot about the flora, bird life, various building styles and so much history. The castle was amazing and your knowledge of the workings of the winery made us wonder if you must have worked there at one time. Thanks for making our last day in Portugal very, very special! Brenda and Rob Miller, London, Canada.
What a great experience this was! Felipe was able to share so much of his local knowledge with us and made it such a special afternoon. Great thing to do on both hot and sunny days, and greyer, windier days. Stop in Silves was just the right amount of time for a quick view of the castle and a taste of the famous orange juice and the winery was very welcoming. All around, a great way to spend a few hours!
Write your review This is a must do while in the Algarve region! We had a wonderful time on this tour. Our guide was super friendly and very knowledgeable. He really took the time to explain so much Portuguese history, great travel tips and he was very knowledgeable about wines. The first stop in Silves was great and is very old charming town. Don't forget to try the orange juice. The winery is a very special place. So beautiful and most importantly each wine we tasted was incredible. You can tell this family takes their winery very seriously. Don’t forget to buy a bottle or two before leaving! Thank you for our special day.
We enjoyed this tour. Only small problem was that the van was quite noisy and we couldn't hear everything our Driver/Guide said. But we were able to extend slightly the time available in Silves so had a resonable look round both the castle and cathedral. The Winery tour and tasting were great - it's a very attractive winery.
Enjoyed exquisite wine and delectable food, surrounded by wonderful company and guided by an expert who makes the experience truly memorable.
Very smooth and professional booking and pickup. All on time with promt communication. Small group in minivan where Filipe provided us loads of historical background en route to Silves. Excellent wines and tour at this small Algarve wine pioneer place
Philippe was extremely knowledgable and made the afternoon interesting fun and v informative of local history. Small group worked well. Beautiful countryside, vineyards , stork nests and lovely old town of Silves . I highly recommend this trip ☺️
We both thoroughly enjoyed the tour, the wine and snacks and the people we shared the transportation with. Very good knowledgeable driver guide.
We had a fabulous afternoon . Rui our driver & guide was superb . Very friendly , informative , chatty & amusing . It was lovely to visit Silves & the vineyard tour & wine tasting was excellent . Great value & memorable afternoon - thank you
Wonderful time! Loved exploring the old castle and church and the wine was excellent. Filipe our guide was wonderful with explaining the history of the area. Definitely would do again.
A reasonable experience with a helpful guide but the content was a little lacking.it comprised a minibus trip from Lagos to pick up others then to travel to Silves for a self-guided 45 minute stop, then 10 minutes in the van to the vineyard shop where we tasted 4 wines with a little bread, cheese and wine over about 1 hour before being dropped back in Lagos. There was not much to look at and to learn about when we reached the shop.
