Itinerary
On this tour, your Radventures guide will determine the best times to visit each of the following locations, in no particular order, based on weather conditions, big bus tour schedules & a few other factors that we as locals consider to ensure that you, as our guests, are getting the best and most authentic experience on the day. Adventuring outside deep in the heart of Banff National Park is a phenomenal experience in any season! That being said, this is a part of the world where weather can change in an instant and temperatures stay well below freezing for most of the winter. Please layer up and dress for being outside in freezing temperatures! Please also ensure you have warm, waterproof footwear on.
Lace up your ice-skates & strap on your snowshoes on the world famous Lake Louise and glide across the ice & snow as you marvel in the incredible scenery around you. With 2 hours here you will have lots of time to ice skate on the lake, explore the lakeside trails on snowshoe or foot, be amazed by the lakefront ice sculptures and check out the incredible hotel interior & shops. There is something to do here for every guest no matter your desired activity level! Upon arrival, your guide will show you all the important landmarks and provide all the information you'll need to explore the lake at your own pace before demonstrating how to use the snowshoes & ice skates (small extra cost, please contact Radventures BEFORE booking). Once everyone is settled into their Lake Louise adventures, your guide will remain with the tour van to allow for guests to come and go as they please to pick-up/drop-off gear and to have access to a warm spot to relax as well as their belongings.
Around 12pm - 1pm, we will make a short stop for lunch at Samson Mall in Lake Louise Village. Guests will be able to choose to buy lunch at the local cafe or bakery, or purchase a bagged lunch from Bare Bistro in advance (extra cost, please contact Radventures before booking). Guests are also welcome to BYO. Please note: We are in a remote part of the Rockies and options for buying lunch can be limited for guests with dietary restrictions. For more information, please contact Radventures before booking.
Experience the incredible beauty of Banff National Park's epic frozen winter wonderland at Johnston Canyon! Upon arrival, your guide will equip you with crampons/ice-cleats & hiking poles and deliver amazing stories & fun facts as you explore the mellow trail together to the Lower Falls (approx 30 mins/1.2km/0.75 miles/50m elevation gain one way). Once at the Lower Falls, guests will have the option to return to the warm comfort of the tour van or to continue to the Upper Falls (an additional 30 mins/1.3km/0.8 miles/70m elevation gain) to be amazed by the biggest & most awe-inspiring frozen waterfalls in the canyon and encourage the daredevil ice climbers scaling their way up the frozen canyon walls. The return trip from the trailhead to the Upper Falls is 2 hours/5.0km/3.1 miles/120m elevation gain in total and is suitable for those with moderate fitness levels. Physical activity on this tour is encouraged but not mandatory & guests may choose to relax instead of hike.
Soak in the incredible views of towering mountains, huge glaciers & alpine forest whilst keeping an eye out for wildlife as we travel along the awe-inspiring backroads of Banff National Park between Lake Louise, Johnston Canyon & Banff.
On Radventures full day epic guided adventures, our expert local guides like to throw in a surprise or two along the way to really make our guests day! On this tour, we guarantee visiting Lake Louise, Johnston Canyon & experiencing the beauty of the Bow Valley Parkway at a minimum. In between or before/after these stops, your guides will utilize all their local experience and knowledge of the weather, how to avoid big bus schedules & recent wildlife sightings to make a secret stop or two.

This tour is one of the best we’ve ever taken, and we’ve been to Banff many times! Our guide Gareth was wonderful and made our trip something we will never forget. He was very knowledgeable, easy to laugh with, and, most of all, considerate of our needs!
Tyler was an awesome guide and so informative. Not just about the activities themselves but the wider National Park. The activities were pitched to allow varied levels of participation and challenge by choice. I would certainly look to book another experience with Radventure if ever in Banff again.
We had the absolute pleasure of spending time with two fantastic guides, Taylor ‘Swifty’ and Tyler, who were great fun and perfect company to spend the day with. They truly made the experience unforgettable. Our walk through Johnson Canyon felt like stepping into a winter winter wonderland. They paced everything perfectly, sharing fascinating insights along the way while making sure everyone felt comfortable and included. We made it all the way to the top of the Upper Falls, and were rewarded with such an incredible view. Snowshoeing at Lake Louise was a real highlight – we had such a giggle. What an experience, surrounded by stunning scenery. What stood out most was how thoughtful and attentive they were throughout. Nothing felt rushed, and they went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a memorable experience. If you’re considering a guided adventure in this area, don’t hesitate. These two are absolute gems, and we’d book with them again in a heartbeat.
Ray was an AMAZING guide! The day’s experiences will remain with me forever!
Gini our guide was fabulous, fantastic, friendly, forthright, flexible, facilitating, fervent and freaking awesome! 😎 My wife and I were the only ones on the Johnston Canyon tour and we received “First” class service. Gini is an experienced guide who made for an unforgettable experience. The roads were snow covered but Gini navigated the trip safely and is a skilled winter driver. 10/10, 5 stars!
Nolan was friendly and informative. His love and knowledge of local birds was infectious. We would definitely recommend this tour and company
We travelled to Banff for skiing, but so glad we took a day off to experience some local spots on this tour. Huge shout out to Nolan for being a fantastic guide! He was enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed all stops on the tour and even saw some of the local wildlife, which was a great bonus!
A great full day out with a variety of experiences including hiking, skating or snowshoeing and amazing scenery. It's a struggle to see wildlife at this time of year but our guide, Nolan, gave it his best shot and was, overall, a terrific guide. A very well organized and run company
Our guide, Simon, was incredible. He picked us up in a clean van, told us a bit about the area, guided us on the hike, made hot coco and smores, and guided us through all of the high lights. He even took lots of family photos and was so great with our children. We really had a great day!

Outstanding tour and gorgeous views! Our guide, Rey, was super friendly and thoughtful and very knowledgable on the area. The hot chocolate after the hike was perfection. Booking the tour saved a lot of time and headache on dealing with crowded and cramped parking lots. I really liked the small size of the group also. Would definitely recommend.
Great winter tour! Ginni was a great tour guide, very knowledgeable and friendly. Had a great time!!
Lake Louise always nice to see. Perfect weather nice informative tour between there and the canyon. Guide was lovely.
We had an incredible day with Lubo! He was knowledgeable, energetic and kept us going with hot chocolate, delicious lunch and spontaneous side trips to even more vistas and waterfalls along the way. I recommend Radventures - a perfect name for an unforgettable experience!
Charlie was awesome!!!!!! He aced the Johnston Canyon tour! Very knowlegeable and very accomodating. Taking good photos of our family of four. Even squeezing in extra places for us to see. He was amazing! Highly recommended!
Lubo was a great guide and shared Banff’s stunning scenery with knowledge, humor, and warm spirits. The temps were frigid but we loved the trip.
If I could give this tour more stars, I would! Our guide, Gini, was the BEST! Johnston canyon was amazing. Totally worth seeing in winter so you can experience the frozen waterfalls. Lake Louise is magical in December, my kids loved the hike around the lake and playing in the snow. On the way back to Banff, we stopped at an overlook and watched the train coming around the bend…it was like something out of the movies. Our groups was small and Gini helped us all with photo ops and where the best pics could be taken. Now, our trip was EXTRA special bc we saw THREE moose while driving to and from different locations. Gini was excellent at navigating to the side of the road so we could take pictures. Overall 10/10 experience in December. If in doubt, DO IT!
Great trip. Family of three on our ‘rest day’ from skiing, first time in Canada. Superb guide Jeanie drove well in difficult conditions and kept us entertained with stories about the places we visited. Snow showing on Lake Louise a highlight and she went out of her way to ensure we had the right gear to enjoy trip and finished with a stop above Banff to take in breathtaking views
Excellent guide. He was competent with a good energy, and I felt confident in his driving skills. I would highly recommend.
We had a great time with our tour guide Bee. She was a fount of information and showed us a herd of elk, mountain goats, and baby Mule deer. Would recommend!
Had a great time and Tyler was an amazing guide. He crammed in tons of great sites and hikes that fit our groups fitness level and interests. Our group was very happy with the tour, we were able to see more than we would have just going on our own. Good for a group unfamiliar with the area and wanting to see as much as they can in a day.
Had a fantastic trip with Tess. Just 4 of us on the trip and Tess was very knowledgeable and a pleasure to be our tour guide for the day. Lovely seeng lake Louise frozen and a nice walk around the lake. Johnston canyon was a nice hike too. Unfortunately no wildlife sightings on the way back to Banff. And the hot chocolate was wonderful. Enjoy your holiday Tess
This was great in every way: safe comfy travel from place to place, a knowledgeable friendly guide (Tyler), options for different paces, great lunch choices, hot beverages. Highly recommend the Johnston Canyon hike in winter!
Tyler was a fantastic tour guide. Took us to the best spots, had a fascinating knowledge of the area and showed a real love for the environment and animals. Would recommend to all, having a local to the area show you around is much safer and you get to skip the usual busy tourist groups.
We had very limited time in Banff, so I selected this tour to hit the highlights I've always hear about. It did NOT disappoint! Our guide, Nolan, from Radventures gave us a full day of spectacular sites and local knowledge. The hike through the Johnston Canyon Upper & Lower Falls was beautiful, and Nolan gave us time to stop and enjoy our surroundings while answering our questions along the way. He had recommendations for our lunch spot that were dead on (Trailheads has great variety, fresh and delicious). On to Lake Louise where we snowshoed--so glad we did that. At every stop Nolan was attentive, considering what we wanted to see, our pace--and helped with our much-needed crampons and snowshoes! Our final stop (and possibly my favorite) was a stop at Lake Minnewanka which Nolan said not many people see--and it's larger than Lake Louise. It was breathtaking! If you are trying to see a lot in a little amount of time (and even if you have all the time in the world), this is an EXCELLENT tour and we had an EXCELLENT guide who is most definitely passionate about Banff.
Amazing trip! Our guide Rae was a great guide, knowledgeable and made the trip all around fun and a good time! The hike was beautiful and the gear provided was perfect!
Great tour guide!, Simon is very customer oriented and always willing to deliver the extra mile!!!!! Snow skates activity was fun
The Johnston Canyon, Lake Louise winter adventure was amazing! Local guide, Rae…10 out of 10! She was so knowledgeable and made our adventure that much more enjoyable.
Great trip, many excellent views along the way. Tyler was a fantastic tour guide. He engaged with everyone throughout the tour and had a great knowledge of the area. Loved hiking Johnston Canyon and walking out on Lake Louise!
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Janet, she was very knowledgeable and a very friendly guide. We visited Johnston Canyon first for a hike in kleats to the frozen waterfall. We only had time for the lower fall so didn't get to the upper falls. The hike itself was quite easy and didn't take very long, the scenery was breathtaking, the snow covered trees and icey river were so pretty. Next, we stopped at Lake Louise village for lunch (this was at our own expense so we ate at the bakery, it was delicious and perfect for an easy lunch). Next stop was Lake Louise, being Winter it was iced over and we had the choice of skating (extra expense) or walking to the other side of the lake. Walking was our choice, it was snowing but wasn't freezing and we chatted to Janet all the way, it was so nice being able to casually chat. We made snow angels, had a snow ball fight, and made a snowman...it was just a perfect afternoon for Aussies that don't ever see snow. Our last stop was a lookout to watch the sunset. A great day was had by everyone on the tour and Janet was the perfect guide. Highly recommend this company.
You really can't go to Banff without ticking Lake Louise and Johnston Canyon off your list. This tour is a great way to do both with a limited timeframe. This was our second tour with Radventures. We also did the Icefields Parkway with Abraham Lake. They were both quite different experiences. They are both great tours but this one is definitely the more "touristy" of the two that we did. Johnston Canyon was beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed this part of the tour. The frozen waterfalls at the end were gorgeous and we loved watching the ice climbers at the end. Lake Louise was a bit of an odd experience. It's lovely but it was just a touch too touristy for us. We are glad we didn't skate as there were heaps of people and the ice quality wasn't great either. If the skating part appeals to you would highly recommend you also book the Icefields Parkway tour with this company with skates for Abraham Lakes (AMAZING experience). If the number of people milling around in front of the Fairmont is off putting to you I'd suggest you lace up your boots and hike to the end of the lake. This is what we ended up doing and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We had Janet as our tour guide for this tour and she was fabulous. We all really enjoyed chatting to her throughout. Janet, I think you've inspired my daughter to move to Canada and take up ice climbing :)
Rae was our guide for the Johnston and Lake Louise Wonderland tour. Rae was a wonderful guide, she was fun incredibly knowledgeable and a fantastic personal photographer. The tour itself was incredible the hike up to the top falls was not difficult and could be managed with almost anyone, I cannot say I am particularly fit and I managed it quite easily. And wow the views, we were so fortunate to have had ice climbers there when we got to the top. Just another insight to life here. Lake Louise is just beautiful to wander around and attractions to do if you wanted. Photos hard to select just a few and found this wonderful selfie by our guide Rae. My husband and I just loved it and laughed out loud when we found it. Something we would do. Highly recommend you take one of Rae’s tours.
Winter Wonderland tour was incredible! Leah was an incredible guide. Highly recommend to families, couples, individuals, or groups
**Winter Wonderland Tour to Johnston Canyon and Ice Skating at Lake Louise** If you're looking for a magical winter adventure, I highly recommend the Winter Wonderland tour to Johnston Canyon and skating on Lake Louise! This experience was beyond expectations, with stunning views, unforgettable moments, and excellent service. Our tour guide, Janet, was the highlight of the trip. She was not only incredibly knowledgeable about the history and geography of the area, but also a true expert on local wildlife and nature. Her fascinating bear stories and impressive animal sound imitations kept us entertained and engaged throughout the journey. Janet’s passion for the environment truly brought the tour to life. From the moment we started the tour, Janet made sure we were well taken care of. She helped with our crampons, ensuring we felt safe and comfortable while walking along the snowy paths of Johnston Canyon. She was also very thoughtful when it came to taking photos, capturing some beautiful moments we will cherish forever. Plus, she made sure we had a delicious lunch and kept the day running smoothly without a hitch. The experience itself was breathtaking. The frozen waterfalls at Johnston Canyon were stunning, and the hike felt like stepping into a true winter wonderland. Afterward, we skated on the pristine ice at Lake Louise, right in front of the iconic Fairmont Hotel. The scenery was surreal, with snow-capped mountains surrounding the lake and the historic hotel providing a gorgeous backdrop. Overall, this tour was a perfect combination of adventure, nature, and relaxation, and Janet made it all the more memorable. Her attention to detail and genuine care for the group made the experience one we will never forget. Don't miss out on this amazing winter experience!
Leah our guide was fantastic so knowledgeable and friendly. Took us to great photo stops as an extra. Views and sites amazing.
Amazing scenery and fantastic tour guide. He was friendly and knowledgeable. We had an amazing day and saw some beautiful scenery.
We had a great day with Rae on the private SUV tour. Rae was very knowledgeable and helpful. I enjoyed the hiking in the canyon even though I had reservations when I was booking about hiking in winter. We had a clear day so it was great conditions for hiking. Enjoyed seeing the iconic Lake Louise and the sinking castle.
Trip was great, some good hiking options with beautiful views and scenery and Janet, our guide was super lovely and helpful theoughout the day.
We used RADVENTURES for a tour of Johnston canyon and Lake Louise and it was fantastic! Our guide was Michael Frymus and he was very knowledgeable about the area. He made several pit stops there and back to take our family to great lookout points. He was is also a photographer which was an added bonus! Overall, we were very pleased with our experience with this company and Michael.
Searching for a personalized private tour in Banff? Radventures is an excellent option. Now, if you need the tour to be perfect…choose Radventures and request the tour guide Michael Frymus! He is amazing, quite knowledgeable and provides an excellent balance of sharing details while allowing quiet reflection in such beautiful surroundings. What makes it perfection is he is a photographer by trade which allows for the best photos for forever memories! Enjoy your trip
Janet was great! She was very knowledgeable on the sights and was also accommodating throughout the tour. We started with a hike through Johnston Canyon and finished in Lake Louise, both were mesmerizing. 100% recommend!
Rae is an amazing tour guide. She is amazing to talk to and an amazing help with anything and everything even having bandaids on hand for blisters haha. The tour was absolutely unreal, every place we visited was beautiful I would highly recommend this tour to any and everyone visiting banff
10/10 Radventures—would recommend! Our Winter Wonderland tour with Tess was epic. She somehow balanced being super chill and a total pro, matching the boundless energy of our hyper-excited teenage nieces and nephew. Tess worked her magic to tweak the day for maximum fun, hitting all the itinerary highlights but with extra flair. Mother Nature even showed up big time—blue skies, mild temps, and a couple of elk cameos (don’t worry, we kept it respectful). We ice-walked, snowshoed, skated, feasted, and had an all-around legendary day. Huge thanks to Tess and Radventures for giving us a family memory we'll treasure forever!
My daughter and I had a fantastic day hiking to Johnston Canyon first and then Lake Louise on this Radventures Winter Wonderland tour. The hike to Johnston Canyon was a lovely start to the day and Michael F was a wealth of knowledge giving lots of interesting information along the way. Even though it was snowing and visibility wasn’t great, the snow added a magical element to our Lake Louise visit. Michael was the perfect guide for the day and when we were early finishing at Lake Louise, he took us to a couple of more beautiful spots along the way home. We highly recommend this tour and thank you for a great day out.
Had a great tour today with Taylor. First rate guide, great information about the area and what we saw and did. Well organized and saw some great animals as well.
We joined Radventures' Winter Wonderland Tour last week. We booked directly with them via their website. This is the best way to do it as it gives you additional options of renting snowshoes and preordering lunch. Our guide for the day was Nolan. Everything worked out very well for us, Nolan was incredible and even the winter weather cooperated (30s temps & sunny). Before booking, I made several calls to Radventures and they were very patient in explaining everything to me. They asked where were staying and told us where our pick up should be. We were picked up @ 9:00 as agreed upon. We started our day @ Johnston Canyon hiking to the Lower Falls. Nolan helped us with our ice cleats (actually he put them on for most of us who were new to this). What a beautiful hike! It was well worth it plus using ice cleats made it easier/safer. The frozen falls was fantastic - a must see in the Winter. After, we went to Moose Trails so we can experience using snowshoes (optional rental). That was fun but more challenging that it looked like. Then we parked @ Lake Louise Village to enjoy our quick lunch. After, we headed on to Lake Louise. WOW! Lake Louise was mostly frozen but you can still see a hint of the turquoise water. Some members of our group (5 of 7) decided we didn't want walk around the lake but instead head into the Chateau of Lake Louise and have some drinks. Nolan accommodated our request & allotted some time for us to do this. Since we still had some time left in our tour, Nolan took us to a couple of his favorite spots in the Banff area. So glad he shared these sights with us - beautiful! In sum, we not only enjoyed the entire itinerary but going through it with Nolan was great. He was very patient, helpful & informative but he didn't overdo it either.
Tyler was well organized, educated, and personable. He was very patient and set an excellent pace for our hike. Tyler was very well spoken, knew the information about the area well, and was able to answer questions.
Janet was awesome. Great knowledgeable leader. Definitely a wonderful tour guide. Would not want anyone else.
This tour was great fun, especially canoeing on Lake Louise. Flossie was a great guide, very thoughtful and helpful. We highly recommend it.
