Walking through the canyon under the moonlight felt like a dream, it’s the kind of place that’s so beautiful it’s hard to believe it’s real. Jeff was very knowledgeable and kind, and did a great job of driving our group back to Banff safely in treacherous conditions! The hike is simple and pleasant, I’m rather unfit and managed it in heavy snow.

Itinerary
Travel through breathtaking scenery and nature on your way to the trailhead and learn about the history and geology of Johnston Canyon.
Light your way through this narrow, water-formed canyon as your small group follows your guide to the Canyon’s lower falls. The suspended catwalks, built into the limestone walls, make this an easy trip for everyone. Along the way, your guide will highlight unique features by powerful flashlight and pause for moments of darkness and quiet to foster an appreciation for spending time in the canyon at night. At the turn around point, your guide will illuminate the expanding ice that encases the rushing water and escort you through a natural tunnel onto the viewing platform, beside the cascading Lower Falls themselves. Warm up with hot chocolate and maple cookies while you look around the Lower Falls, the turnaround point. The return journey is your opportunity to travel without your headlamp (should you wish!). You’ll be amazed as to how quickly your eyes adjust to the darkness, enough for you to travel through the pine forest guided only by the ambient light of the moon and the stars above your head. What to expect: • Walking Time: 1 - 1.5 hours • Return Distance: 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers) • Elevation Gain: 213 feet (65 meters)

The evening Icewalk is perfect if you want something less steep than the daytime tour. We got to see the canyon and lower falls during the daylight on the way up. On the way down you got to see it in the nighttime which was a perfect blend. Our tour guide Jake was very knowledgeable about the area and ensured everyone felt comfortable at their own pace. A couple of stops throughout to take great pictures. This might be hard to believe as bears do hibernate during winter but Jake fought off a bear in majestic fashion saving us all 🤣. I highly recommend this Icewalk, especially with Jake as he hilarious and ensured you felt comfortable during the walk no matter your age or fitness level.
Rob was excellent! This was a perfect way to send the evening. We went in the winter and not having to beat crowds or adjust to large tourist was the main draw. He was very informational and did a great job. The passion for this job rubbed off on us. Love the small groups!
This night hike was a highlight of our trip, even though it was extremely cold, we bundled up and could walk by just the moonlight. The scenery was spectacular, our guide was informative and personable.
Professional, took a good care of everyone in the group. Night walk was an excellent choice with a great guide. The clear night sky through the trees was beautiful this night.
Phenomenal experience! The landscape under the moon light was straight out of a fairy tale. Jake, our guide, was knowledgeable, engaging, focused on safety and comfort and had a great sense of humour. Our family has memories together that will last a lifetime.
We had a wonderful evening on this tour. Hiking at night is so peaceful. The trail was quiet and the snowfall was perfect ambiance. Having the headlamp was nice for when you wanted to look at something but walking with the dark sky was sensational. Neil was an incredible guide, and we would take a tour with him again, in a heartbeat!
Brilliant experience! Highly recommend. Jake our guide was fantastic - full of deep local knowledge of the area & wonderful stories of local explorers and founders. The best part by far was him saving our tour group from an unexpected avalanche on our hike to Johnson's Canyon. Beyond this, the hike was absolutely wonderful with postcard views & scenery along the way.
Jake was an absolute blast! He fought off this huge mountain lion with only his hiking pole and good looks. Highly recommend doing this tour for anyone in Banff!!!!
Although Jake has great stories and exquisite music taste, that is not important. What is important is that when a bear pounced on us on our way to the lower falls, Jake was fearless. He snapped part of the wooden railing clean off and twirled the wickedly sharp point at the now cowering bear. But he wasn't done. Jake then used bear language to communicate with the bear and convinced him to never attack humans ever again. What a hero!
My guide, Tim, was very personable and knowledgeable. He shared local history and facts on the way to the canyon and during the icewalk, then played calming music on the way back to Banff to allow everyone to relax and unwind after the walk. The icewalk itself was stunning. Since it was late March when I went on the walk, the beginning was in daylight, allowing us to see more of the canyon and ice formations. Once we got to the turnaround point and had hot chocolate and maple cookies (such a delicious and cute touch!), darkness had fallen. We were able to enjoy a moonlit walk back under a few stars, which was so cool. Overall, it was a special experience with a small group and a great guide. Highly recommend!
This was a super unique experience, and getting to see the canyon at night was very cool. We were the only ones there, which is pretty rare for such a popular area. We saw some wildlife (fox) and the stars were incredible. Chloe was an awesome guide who shared many interesting facts about the canyon and Banff's history. She made sure everyone navigated the ice/snow safely and the tour pace was just right. Would recommend to anyone seeking to explore the canyon during the winter months!
This is such a breathtaking experience, and a beautiful opportunity to stargaze and take in nature at night.
This tour was just so fun and Jake made it a truly memorable hike. It is my first time coming to Banff and I will be back! I would recommend this evening ice walk to anyone.
What an amazing evening The sky was perfect just beautiful The guide was very knowledgeable on lots of topics and well prepared we were well looked after the canyon took on magical feel in the evening where all we could hear was the river running under the ice and the ice cracking would highly recommend it
A well run guided walk. Jake, our guide was most entertaining with plenty of stories and facts from the moment we got on the tour bus to completion. The night we went was clear with beautiful skies. No others in the car park except for us and the fox. Safety conscious throughout. equipment provided for the walk was of good quality. Hot chocolate and maple cookies were a nice addition. Would be happy to book through this company again.
Unique, enjoyable experience. Georgia, guide, was great. Convenient pick up and drop off. Highly recommend.
This was a great excursion. I was a bit skeptical but we are so glad we went. We had a clear sky and full moon. Beautiful! And our guide Tina was fantastic. Would highly recommend this experience.
Georgina was so great. We traveled with my parents who have a little bit of a mobility challenges, and she still made them feel apart of the group and not left behind.
The quiet. Until you hear water. It was the most wonderful experience I've ever had. Our tour guide Georja, was awesome. She was very patient with me. I have issues with my knees and she reassured me it was OK. I give her 10 out of 10 stars. Thank you so much.
What a gorgeous way to see the canyon - no crowds (no other people at all!) and a sky full of stars. Jake was a great guide - knowledgeable, safety-conscious and great company.
Hike is easy enough for my old dad to be able to do comfortably, good snacks and good guide (Jake) on Christmas Eve ! The hike is extremely peaceful at evening, and beautiful views !
Experiencing this location in the dark was great and different! It really forced me to notice different things about the natural environment, and the hot cocoa and cookies were a great touch! The guides were also knowledgeable and it was evident they wanted everyone to have a safe and enjoyable time on the tour.
Great night hike of Johnston Canyon! My friend and I booked a tour online beforehand and we got picked up from a different hotel (only certain downtown hotels allow for pickup). Since it was in February, we dressed very warmly. Handwarmers and foot warmers would be advised. They provide headlamps which you can keep as a souvenir as well as snow shoes. Our group had about 12 people in it and we all fit comfortably in their van. The night hike was short and not too strenuous. We saw a waterfall and stopped at various points to gaze at the stars. One good tip for those with iPhones is to change the night mode setting from 3 seconds to 10 seconds in order to allow the photos to develop better. We had hot cocoa while on the trail and were given a packet of maple cookies. Overall, the night hike was a nice way to explore safely at night and view the beauty of nature.
Did the night walk for my wife and I’s final night in the park. It’s a simple, short hike that is accessible for all skill levels. Liam navigated us through the beautiful, icy locations and did a good job working the crowd.
Walking without any artificial lights so that the stars were brilliant at night. Seeing the frozen waterfall was amazing. It was very quiet and not crowded at all which was the reason we decided to go at night. Highly recommend this experience.
Interesting to see the frozen waterfall in winter and guide did good job to explain and show us about the different landscapes and stream. Night walk with cleats was an interesting experience than walking in the noon.
Such a nice short hike through the canyon! Emma was a wonderful host and guide! This is a place my fram and I are are going to have to come back in the summer
Really cool experience and I would not want to have done it without a guide. Our guide Piper was informative and personable.
This tour was wonderful! We were with Phoebe and she challenged us not to use our head lamps by the end of the tour. Halfway through the tour, no one had them on and we were only walking by the light of the snow. It was wonderful! So beautiful and peaceful and SILENT! I recommend for sure!
Such a fun and easy experience for the family (including elders)! Our tour guides were also so fun and helpful! Shout out to piper & max!!
Such a unique experience to be out in the wilderness so late at night, I would highly recommend this to anyone considering! My guide Emma was very kind and made the experience enjoyable! I was unsure how it would go as I was joining by myself but it was a great experience.
If you want a peaceful night walk in the canyon that you can see the stars, this is not for you. The tour guide didn't clearly effectively provide instructions on how to use the head light. Some of the people constantly have the white light on and it feels like walking on the highways and being struck by cars' high beam every few seconds. When we raised the issues, one of the suggestions was to take the private tour if we wanted a better experience. I don't think our tour guide has been supported with solid directions. She did try her best and I can tell she is a hard worker. I don't think this is her fault. However, I would not recommend this tour to people who actually want to have a proper night walk experience.
Tim was our guide and was an awesome host! Loved doing the walk at night…so peaceful and beautiful when you reach the falls.
Jeff was fantastic! A great, low-key way to check out some beautiful ice formations in the canyon. We loved the overall vibe and will definitely be back soon.
We had a great time with Jeff who is very knowledgeable and such an outdoorsy man .. enjoyed the canyon plus saw a fox- cool waterfall at the end. thanks so much
Ros and Liam were excellent guides and made us feel totally comfortable walking through the wilderness in the dark. Beautiful scenery. Worth it!
Thank you Ros and Liam !!! You guys made it super fun and it was an awesome experience adjusting our eyes & hiking completely in the dark! Ps. Hot chocolate was amazing 🤌🏻! Thank youuuuuuu - miami girls
What a great evening! We were met at a convenient location and driven to the canyon, maybe 45 minute drive. Tim our guide/driver was very engaging and informative. We had a little history during our drive. Once at the park, we put on ice cleats, head lamps and set out on our Icewalk. It was a gorgeous clear evening, Tim gave us history of the Canyon and family who still runs it. The views were beautiful. This was a pretty easy walk, wear hiking shoes that are warm. Not a big change in elevation, walkways very clear and safe, railings the entire route. we did the lower falls as it was an evening walk, had a delicious cup of cocoa and cookies and headed back. The time frame of this was perfect. highly recommend this easy, beautiful tour.
Great trip! Amazing tour guide. Ryan was very perky and knowledgeable. Would do it again for sure! Also the maple cookie was the bomb! 😀
We enjoyed our experience and our guide Erin was very nice, she spoke very clearly and provided lots of information which we appreciated very much. But we kinda feel like the day time walk would've been nicer to see the scenery and for pictures.
Roz was a wonderful guide! We enjoyed it so much! Highly recommend!! We were able to enter the trail in daylight and end after nightfall! Our views were awesome! Definite must do!
Tim from Strathroy, ON was our guide. He was very polite, adjusted the walking speed for the group, drove safely and shared his knowledge of the area with us. Hot chocolate and maple cookies by the cave was a nice little treat. Recommend as an activity. Pics are limited :) rather able to take the time to listen to the quiet and the running stream.
It was such a beautiful evening, great tour guide. Very informative. Highly recommend booking the Evening sidewalk. Thank you
An easy hike to capture stunning night views and hear the flowing water. The cave scene was beautiful.
We’ve walked Johnston Canyon many times in the summer but to do it in the middle of winter at night was a treat. The sky was mostly clear with an almost full moon to light the way, no need for headlamps. Great experience, highly recommend.
So glad I did this! It was a small group, 5 with the guide. He was very knowledgeable and kind. Cold, but peaceful and worth it!
Erin was an amazing leader, she knows her history well and just made it all well enjoyable, was freezing but ended up being ok
One of the most memorable activities we did while in Banff! The falls were incredible. The night silence paired with the raging waters and star lit sky made it just so perfect! Would do this walk again!
An amazing trip, highly recommended! Jeff was very knowledgeable and presented a fantastic tour of the canyon.
