offers a stunning view of Portage Lake and the surrounding Chugach Mountains. Located off the Portage Glacier Road, about an hour’s drive south of Anchorage, this overlook provides visitors with a panoramic vantage point to see the turquoise lake fed by glacial melt and, on clear days, glimpses of Portage Glacier in the distance.
This 200-acre center offers visitors the chance to see native species like bears, moose, bison, musk oxen, elk, caribou, eagles, and wolves up close in naturalistic enclosures. You can walk or drive the 1.5-mile loop around the grounds, take guided tours, or join feeding sessions and educational talks. It’s a popular stop for families, photographers, and anyone wanting to learn more about Alaskan wildlife conservation efforts.
This spot is famous for two things: ✅ Beluga whale watching — in late summer and early fall, you might spot beluga whales swimming close to shore, chasing salmon during the incoming tide. ✅ Dramatic mountain and water views — it’s a favorite for photographers, especially at sunset, and also great for spotting Dall sheep on the cliffs above.
This is a family-friendly, easy-access spot ideal for birdwatching, photography, and nature walks, especially in spring and summer when the birds are most active. There’s a small parking lot, interpretive signs, and binoculars are recommended for the best viewing
Earthquake Park in Anchorage is a 134-acre interpretive site and wooded park commemorating the 1964 Good Friday earthquake

We had a great day with Adam. He was a great ambassador for the Anchorage area, showing us many sights in Whittier, Anchorage, and points in between. A highlight was the Wildlife Conservation Center, and Adam even drove us to several different spots there, so that we didn’t miss seeing some of the animals. He was very knowledgeable, and his commentary added greatly to the experience. At the end of the journey, he took us directly to our Airbnb. If you need to get from the port in Whittier to Anchorage, and you have some time to spare, I highly recommend Adam’s service.
What a great way to get from our cruise ship to the airport! We made so many stops! The Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Center, Portage Lake, Potters Marsh, Turnagain Arm, Earthquake Park…and I know this was just total luck, but we saw Beluga whales at TWO of our stops. Our guide was so nice and gave us interesting information about Whittier and Anchorage, the topography, and great local recommendations. If you are ending a cruise in Whittier and need a transfer to Anchorage, this is a fabulous way to end your trip!
Adam was a great tour guide, very communicative and was flexible with multiple changes of plans and kids. The snacks were a huge hit! He even made multiple trips the airport when flights were changed. Highly recommend!!
Easily recommend him for anyone needing a shuttle. Very knowledgeable and punctual.
Driver was fantastic. Very knowledgeable, kind and responsive. He drove us to many different must see spots and even provided us with snacks! Very punctual and trustworthy. Definitely recommend!
It was really good. Went to plenty of different places with some background knowledge about each spot.
Perfect day seeing and exploring Alaska! June was really professional, knowledgeable and kind. She went out of her way to accommodate all of us in our adventurous day. Our day was jam packed with exciting activities and wildlife to see! I highly recommend them. Her husband is a veteran! Great business!
What a great experience! Our tour guide Adam was knowledgeable, friendly, and went out of his way to accommodate requests of everyone in the group. At the end of the tour he dropped us off for a great dinner in downtown Anchorage and then came back a few hours later to drive us to the airport. Truly above and beyond our wildest expectations! The stops along the tour from Whittier to Anchorage were great and we really enjoyed being able to go on multiple nature walks during the day. The coach was clean, comfortable, and had charging ports. The provided snacks were a nice touch too. This tour was a wonderful way to wrap up our trip to Alaska. Highly recommend!
Our last day in AK and booked this excursion to pass the time between ship and flight. It was an awesome day! Started with excellent communication day before and during pickup. The coach was beautiful and the snacks were a nice surprise - especially compared to no snacks on Princess booked excursions. We made many stops at scenic spots, including a small hike to a waterfall in a rainforest. Also a hike into a glacier with up front and personal opportunities to be on/near the glacier. We saw a wild moose and eagles nest. The nature conservatory site was a perfect balance of walking and driving to see the animals. June, our guide, couldn’t have been more amazing! She even waited for us to eat dinner in Anchorage before taking us to the airport. Highly recommend this family-owned business for your excursion out of Wittier. They do northern lights excursions out of Fairbanks in the winter! I would definitely book again!
What an amazing tour experience. June was really great and took care of us. Huge value for the price. Highly recommended.
He was an amazing tour quide. Extremely helpful and well worth the money.
We just arrived at our hotel in Anchorage after our full day with Adam. Pick up at the Whittier Cruise port was on time and easy. We made many stops along our route directly to our hotel near the Anchorage Airport. This transfer and tour added an additional number of great memories of our Alaska trip. All stops were perfect with the amount of time allotted for each. Was a beautiful sunny 70 degree early June day as well. Thank you Adam for a great day .
Adam was very professional and kept in contact with us the day prior to our event to make sure we knew what to expect the morning of our pick-up. He helped with luggage, provided a snack, and gave us interesting information about all things Alaska as we toured multiple locations. He gave us the perfect amount of time at each destination to enjoy ourselves and not feel rushed yet he kept us on schedule. This was absolutely an ideal way to get from Whittier to Anchorage. I would definitely recommend Alaska Custom Tour and Adam to anyone looking for a fun-filled transfer to Anchorage!
Despite an unexpected change in our cruise disembarkation port from Seward to Whittier, this excursion turned into a memorable and worthwhile experience thanks to our excellent guide, Adam. Due to traffic delays through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel — the single-lane tunnel shared with trains entering and leaving Whittier — our tour started later than expected. However, Adam remained professional, courteous, and organized throughout the day. From the moment he picked us up in the cold rain and snow mix, he made sure everyone was comfortable and informed. Our small group of seven traveled in a comfortable Ford Transit van and visited several beautiful locations including Begich Towers in Whittier, Portage and Byron Glaciers, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Virgin Creek Falls Trail, Beluga Point, and Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary before arriving in Anchorage. Even with rainy weather, the scenery was absolutely stunning. Highlights included the turquoise waters near Portage Glacier, viewing brown bears, bison, reindeer, foxes, and owls at the conservation center, and the breathtaking mountain views along Turnagain Arm. One unexpected highlight was the short hike to Virgin Creek Falls in Girdwood, which added a peaceful rainforest experience to the day. Adam also shared useful information about Alaska’s history, wildlife, and local recommendations for Anchorage. His flexibility and positive attitude helped turn a stressful itinerary change into an enjoyable journey. Overall, this excursion was a fantastic way to experience the natural beauty of Alaska after the cruise. Although the day ran longer than planned, the scenery, wildlife, and excellent guiding made it well worth it.
We took a tour with Adam, and we absolutely loved it. He was punctual, friendly, and accommodating. Even though it was raining, he stopped at all the tourist attractions. On top of all that, his wife accompanied us in another car, carrying our suitcases.
Dan did an awesome job! We were never rushed and he took us to so many beautiful places! He personally knew the area and knew the best place with at least crowds for pictures. Even loved the stop for snacks at a chocolate shop. The wildlife park was amazing and we were able to see many of the animals up close
The tour guide gave us time to spend time at places where we wanted and kept us moving along to see everything scheduled.
A great way to see Anchorage and get from Whittier to the Anchorage Airport. The tour operator was very accomodating.
Adam was very friendly and accommodating. He was knowledgeable about the area and was patient with our questions.
Adam was knowledgeable and informative. He took pictures of every one of us with his professional camera. He is also very patient. The timing and arrangement was perfect.I will recommend his tour
