Ben went out of his way to make sure we experienced the aurora borealis. The communication between Mike and Ben made sure we were successful. Great team!

The aurora borealis is one of the most amazing natural wonders on earth. Join us on a quest to view and photograph the northern lights in and around the Fairbanks area. Depending on the nights weather conditions we may head out to our cabin with a cozy fire, or head out on a chasing tour. The length of the night out and final location will depend on cloud cover and strength of aurora. Our team will reach out to you via forecast phone call between 3:00pm - 5:00pm to provide details on the pickup time, tour length, and destination for the night.

I would recommend waiting till the last minute to book this, b/c cancelling isn't an option if it's cloudy. Granted, the clouds may part and you may get to see the northern lights, but it's a looong boring night if you don't. They don't have any back-up entertainment or education in case the clouds dont part, so you're stuck in a yurt until 2 a.m. with a bunch of also tired strangers. The best part was meeting Ash Nederhoff and listening to his Big Foot experiences, but alas, he was tired too and had the option of going to bed so he did. I don't blame him. Overall, poorly run. Didn't appreciate rap music on bus. Driver should consider the audience... if they want a tip from me anyway.
Very professional crew. The heated yurts made the experience comfortable despite the cold, and we were lucky to witness a great aurora show. Highly recommended.
Of course the tour company and guides have no real control over the Aurora, but they certainly do what they can to ensure the best possible experience for us! We went on two consecutive nights and I have to think they were two of the best nights of the season. Mike and Ben were constantly checking apps that provided the latest information on conditions and they were able to educate us on what has to happen in order for the northern lights to appear. We were with them for hours, either outside watching (and you knew when to go outside because the excited yells would start), or inside the heated yurt (a necessity!). Their passion for this activity was very apparent and it rubbed off on all of us! They were very personable and available to answer questions the whole night. They took lots of pictures of the Aurora and of us to share with us which added to the experience. I can't recommend this tour enough ... as long as the conditions are favorable and I believe they have other tours for when they aren't.
This was the highlight of our trip! We loved the small group and the viewing options. Mike and Ben were great. 1st class all around. We recommend to everyone!
It’s an amazing experience that one should try in their lifetime. Ben did a wonderful job taking us to the place to see and experience the northern lights.
A very good performance of aurora show, so spectacular. Good photos showing both the person and the lights. The guide's prediction tools (various sources and good interpretation) are very professional.
We booked an aurora chasing tour in Fairbanks, but the weather just didn't cooperate during our short stay(<3 nights). From the start, the team was incredibly transparent about the forecast. Mike gave us updates in a timely manner with details provided. They went out of their way to try rescheduling our tour to give us the best possible shot, even though it ultimately didn't work out because of our schedule. Their genuine care and flexibility made what could have been a disappointing experience feel positive and thoughtful instead. Highly recommend them for their aurora expertise, especially their exceptional kindness. Thank you for making our trip memorable in the best way. We'll definitely visit again and book a tour with them next time!
We received a phone call at 3PM on the date of the excursion from Jacob that our best chance to see lights was that very night. Shaggy/Mike picked us up at 9PM along with another couple from another hotel. He had a camera and tripod and knew the best settings and places to pull off the road. We had luck the very first time as early as 9:40PM! The lights for us weren't easy to see with the naked eye but when he worked his magic on the camera, there they were! We went to several other spots "chasing" (hint: look for stars!) and found other locations with better views. In the end, we were dropped off at our hotel at 3AM and a link with all of our photos was sent within 2 days. I cannot say enough about the professionalism of this tour operator! It checked off one of my priority bucket list items and I would book this again!
Excellent facilities and equipment, and a friendly and professional guide. Highly recommended experience
Had a great time seeing the lights! Ben was our guide - very energetic and took lots of great photos. Loved that the groups were small and that they give you a call the day of to go over the forecast with you. Highly recommend!
We had an amazing experience with Mike and Greatland Adventures! I 100% recommend booking with Greatland Adventures for their Northern Lights Tour. Mike went above and beyond to make our experience a truly once in a lifetime trip. He’s very knowledgeable and my Dad loved talking science with him. We went out 3 nights with Mike and truly chased the lights! Rather than only having a few home bases to view the sky from, this tour also takes you on the road to reach the clear skies which is important if it’s cloudy. Mike tried his best on our first night, but the cloud coverage was not cooperating. On our second and third nights we spent some time in their warm and cozy cabin and yurts. We had success on our second AND third nights!! His team was very transparent in explaining the chances of seeing the northern lights based on their weather and Aurora forecasts. JUST BOOK THIS TOUR!!
I don’t even think a review could cover what I wanna say. Cody was our guide and he was fabulous! I CANNOT recommend this tour enough. As a solo female traveler, was worried about safety and having awesome pictures. Cody ensured everyone in the group was comfortable, safe, and got the pics we wanted - he’s a photography hobbyist so it was perfect! If I ever wanted to aurora hunt again, I know exactly who I’d book with. Photos attached are from my iPhone and not the professional photos we’re getting
What a great adventure to "chase the Aurora"! Started out by Greatland calling us a few hrs ahead of time to discuss the weather and if we wanted to reschedule. Since we only had one day left, even though cloudy, decided to chance it. Glad we did! Night was cloudy, but first place got some neat sky pictures. Then on to their property which has yurts to warm up in. Our tour guide, Mike, was great. He kept checking their internet to monitor weather and see cloud cover. All of a sudden, they could see the lights popping up between the clouds! Got some nice photos that he sent to us after we got home. A really fun time. Highly recommend "chasing" versus just going to one place. Then you have the option to move around depending on the weather. Be ready to not get any sleep, but so worth the time and money! Definitely bucket list item!
Do not miss this trip! Steve and Shannon are great. We didn’t see the aurora but we spent all the hours of darkness looking. Pick up from hotel was 11pm. Small group of 3 which was great. We stopped outside Fairbanks at a spot which was clear. The stars were out. Could see the Big Dipper. Beautiful but no aurora. We went further hoping clouds would clear. Saw Alaskan pipeline. We saw a moose cross the road. Steve explained in detail about how to forecast aurora. I went previously did a NL tour in Iceland which I’d never recommend. Greatland deserves a 100% as they go above and beyond. Steve explained about rods and cones in the eyes and how that was why camera could pick up lights eye couldn’t see. We then went to a cabin on a hill where we spent more time waiting for clouds to pass. In spite of clouds passing, no luck. Hot liquids and snacks available at cabin. They also have yurts. We started back to see if anything was to be seen. There are springs along the road where there are stations to collect the water. A local was filling 5gal containers when we arrived (at 3:30 am). We all had cups and tried the water. Then we posed at the pipeline. We had also posed at cabin. I arrived back at the hotel close to 5 am. Though I didn’t see the NL, I had more fun than I’ve had the rest of my trip. Very informative! Prior to going on the trip, I talked to several individuals who had worked with Greatland Adventures and they spoke highly of Steve and other leaders. My goal was to see the NL which isn’t realistic as we can’t control Mother Nature. I will remember the experience as the highlight of my trip. Still hope to see NL in the future
Had a great time on the tour. Shannon did a great job driving us through a blizzard to get reach clear sky. It was a long drive there and back, but very much worth it. Shannon was very committed to getting us an amazing sky show. Don't schedule an early morning tour the next day. You might not make it/really need a nap!
Fabulous 4 nights with Mike of Greatlqnd adventures in Fairbanks viewing the Northern Lights! The lights were fantastic. Great viewing spot with no light disruption. Had a nice warm cabin with hot drinks and snacks to escape the cold. Loved the ice walls, platforms around the cabin. Mike was always taking pics of our group, providing great info and extremely helpful in all ways. Highly recommend!!!
Tour was amazing. We had been in and around Fairbanks for a week, attempting to see the Aurora, including trying Borealis Basecamp and all we saw were clouds or stars. We booked a tour with Mike at Greatland Adventures and he was able to find a clear location with a beautiful view of the Aurora. He also took some amazing pictures, and provided those for no extra charge! He even spotted a moose along the way to the Aurora viewing site. It was the trip of a lifetime, thanks to Mike! Here are a few pictures I took with my Samsung phone.
We booked the Fairbanks northern lights tour with them as it was recommended by the aurora guy (Vincent Ledvina). We couldn’t be more delighted!! Our guide Mike was amazing and we had a great aurora viewing experience at their cabin. They also captured high quality pictures of us which turned out to be amazing! I can’t recommend them enough.
We had an amazing night hunting the Northern Lights with Greatland Adventures in Fairbanks. Kevin, our guide, was the absolute BEST! He contacted us beforehand asking if we had any questions and then went out of his way to make sure each one was answered. What made the outing even more fun was his enthusiasm. His excitement to see the lights raised everyone else's. When we arrived at the cabin Kevin made sure everyone was comfortable. His attentiveness never faded, either. On top of making sure everyone had what they needed he took amazing pictures -- of the lights and groups - multiple times throughout the night. Going beyond what was usually offered, he even recorded and sent a GoPro time lapse video to us. Sensitive to the group's needs he didn't rush anyone and gave ample time to wrap things up. Thankfully, we had an amazing night and didn't need to drive far but if we had Kevin would've make the trip worth it. Even at 2:30am he stopped on the way back and gave us one more chance to capture the amazing lights. Booking with Greatland was easy, affordable, and worth it. They had great customer service before we even booked - returning my calls and sending details on tour options - and that service lasted even after we returned. Thank you Greatland and Kevin for such an AMAZING trip!
Thanks for 4 memorable and awesome experiences. Jonathan with the Matanuska Glacier tour. Bill with the Fat Tire Bike & dog sled tour and Daniel with the Northern Lights tour (including Clint & Dimitri) and then our daily Northern Lights telephone call with Brad. And, Sandy and Rochelle in the office for their hospitality and assistance. You all made it very easy, friendly and worthwhile. Thanks for making our Alaskan vacation so special.
Chris was a great guide. Had a wonderful tour and experienced beautiful Aurora Lights! Our guide made sure we all had lots of pictures taken and was all awesome host!
My partner and I booked Greatland as we wanted to hedge our bets and ensure we would have as many opportunities to see the Northern Lights as possible. We spent a couple of nights in Anchorage and a couple in Fairbanks, so i'd booked with them for a night in Anchorage, but ended up cancelling this trip and rebooking it for Fairbanks as the chances weren't great that night. There was no issue with this from the team and they were all so lovely. We spoke in person and on the phone and in all interactions the people were amazing. We successfully saw the lights in Fairbanks (which were indescribable!) and had a great evening with Chris. He was the perfect guide and so excited for us to see them. His infectious energy kept us going (we'd just caught the train to Fairbanks from Anchorage that day and were exhausted). I can't speak highly enough of the service they offer. Yes, it's expensive, but they truly offer amazing service and were so accommodating to our needs.
Steve was very knowledgeable and quite willing to share that knowledge. He took great care to make sure that everyone got the most out of the experience. While other tour groups sharing the lodge with us left at 2am, Steve stayed until 4am so that we could have the greatest chance to see the northern lights. He even stopped along the road going home to catch just a minute of the 'dancing lights.' As a solo attendee, Steve made sure that I was not left out and understood all that was going on.
Our scheduled night was cloudy so they postponed it one night hoping for clear skies. Chris our driver was fabulous. Very knowledgeable and helpful. The little cabin was warm and the sky show was great.
From the very beginning the communication was excellent and super helpful!!! I was very skeptical that they were portraying this company as doing things that maybe that couldn't fulfill. We were so very wrong!!! EVERYTHING they promised was exactly how it happened! Chris was an excellent driver and host to our van load!!! He made the trip so fun and he took such good care of us!!! Thank you so much for a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list adventure!!! We will be sending friends to enjoy this wonderful experience!!! We highly recommend the company, the adventure, and Chris, the driver! The northern lights were just a dancing for us!!!!
On the scheduled night of this tour weather conditions were not at all favorable to see the Northern Lights. After some discussion with Brad and Daniel (our tour guides), myself and a small group decided we would take the tour regardless of conditions instead of rescheduling as it was better than just staying at the hotel. Brad and Daniel could have made this an easy day for themselves, but instead were relentlessly persistent. They had a constant eye on weather conditions and Aurora activity apps while, at the same time, being energetic and fun. We ended up going well outside of Fairbanks to an area that showed some clear skies on the weather app. Upon arrival skies were clear as we had hoped. About 15 minutes later they noticed a weak visual of the Aurora and set up camera equipment immediately. As we watched, the display grew and became more brilliant .. SUCCESS! After an hour of photos we got back in the vehicle to head back to Fairbanks. Ten minutes later we caught another display of the lights and cleared the van again. Both Brad and Daniel were extremely knowledgeable of the Aurora, knew where we should be to increase our chances of seeing the lights, were excellent photographers, and showed a genuine interest in giving their customers a positive experience. If it had not been for their determination I would definitely have NOT seen the Northern Lights during my stay in Fairbanks. Once they drop you off at your hotel, their work is still not done. The next day they put all of the photos together and send them to you via Google Drive. FANTASTIC!
Obrigado Mike!
