An all around amazing experience from the start - Jay, our guide, the woodstove-warmed cabin, ice fishing, the fact that lights came out to play, the reindeer sausage and fish, and even the crazy cold temps! Despite the warmth in the cabin, your feet will get cold if you don't have good footwear, so be prepared for that. You'll be warm enough that you'll be removing layers up top though. All will be needed for warmth when you walk out to check on the lights every so often. It was -32 the night we went out. Whether you're catching fish or not, it's a great experience to be hanging in a cabin. Having the lights show up is a definite plus, but nothing in anyone's control. Our guide, Jay, was fantastic - prepped our bait, played good music, kept us company, helped check on the lights and cooked up some great sausage and fish. We did this trip as a family of four, which included 2 teenagers. They had a blast too. We do not regret our choice in booking this experience at all!
One more to ✔️off my bucket list. We had a great time/a great experience, even though we couldn’t see the Aurora since it was snowing, Jay made sure we made the best of it. He was fun and knowledgeable. I recommend this tour anytime.
Our guide, Jay, was very knowledgeable and helpful. Although I didn’t catch any fish and the northern lights didn’t come out, I absolutely loved the experience. I was surprised how warm and toasty the wood-burning stove kept us during -40° below zero. Jay also cooked some deer sausage on the stove and it was delicious!
Pretty fun experience, my first time ice fishing and my wife’s first time ever fishing. Got a couple bites but they fell off my hook, my wife caught her first fish! Which was super exciting and fun to see her experience! Aurora was out a little which was nice before the trip back home. The fresh fish and reindeer sausage was yummy too! Never had that fresh of fish before!
Since the first phone call to get information, the staff was great! We ended up booking 3 activities with Rod’s. We Dog Sledded with Luther, Ice Fished and Aurora’d with Colton and Snow Machined with Josh. All 3 guides were fun, friendly, knowledgeable and super awesome. The office staff especially Jessica were all friendly and helpful. In talking to all of the guides it seems Rod is an awesome boss and he has longtime happy employees. We can’t recommend them enough.
We had an incredible nighttime ice fishing and aurora viewing experience! Everything was well organized, and our guide Colton Vivian made sure we were comfortable, warm, and well taken care of throughout the evening. He even cooked us up some reindeer hotdogs to snack on! He was knowledgeable, friendly, and great at explaining both ice fishing and what to look for in the night sky. When the aurora appeared, we were able to step outside and take in the incredible night sky and northern lights. Seeing the aurora dance across the sky, in person was absolutely breathtaking and something we’ll never forget. The quiet, the scenery, and the overall atmosphere were absolutely amazing — something you really can’t experience anywhere else. Towards the end of the night we ate a few of the fish we caught, and I ended up catching the biggest fish of the night! This was a memorable and special experience for my partner and I, and we would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Alaska. A perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty.
Had such a fun night of fishing and aurora viewing! Trevor was a great host for the evening, kept us aware of when the aurora was out, and cooked us up some delicious fish. What a unique and great experience! One-of-a-kind outing!
I lived ice fishing and our guide Colton was the best and most helpful person I have ever known. I didn’t personally catch lots of fish but my family did. I loved this experience and would love to go again. Once again, Colton was the best and very helpful.
Our fishing adventure was one of a kind! I would definitely recommend this tour. So professional and well planned out. The ice fishing cabin was very nice and much bigger than I expected. Went as a family of five. we all caught fish and had stunning views of the lights. We were provided with a snack of reindeer sausage and our guide even cooked up the fish we caught. Our guide was super knowledgable and had lots of interesting stories to share. It was fun to have an entertaining activity to do in a warm space while staying up to view the lights.
We did the 2hr snowmobiling, 4 hr aurora night fishing and 1hr dog sledding. We loved each one of these. The entire staff here is friendly from the moment you walk in the door until you leave. They answer all questions and even answer the questions you didn’t know you had. We had a chance to talk with one of the owners as well. She too was wonderful. I highly recommend this for your winter amenities while in Fairbanks. They also offer the proper attire that is so warm hard to believe it was below freezing.
The highlight of the trip! Fish were surprisingly active overnight and we caught enough king and silver salmon for everyone. The cabin was warm enough for me to take my outer coat off, and very spacious and clean. Mike was a fantastic guide - very knowledgeable about seemingly everything, was proactive in helping everyone have a great time, and a great chef! And we were lucky enough to see lady Aurora. 10/10
Mike was a great guide!!! Saw the aurora borealis and caught lots of fish!!! Thank you Mike Kathleen Davidson North Pole Alaska
Wow!! We were so lucky—we went on a gorgeous night with spectacular Northern Lights viewing. Our guide, Mike, was knowledgeable and friendly, and as enthusiastic about the lights as we were. He worked really hard making sure everybody had what they needed, while still keeping the atmosphere relaxed and fun. Rod even stopped by and spent some time with us, which was such a treat! Can’t wait for our next visit to do it all over again!!
Rods made our trip to North Pole area so memorable! We started with a dog sledding trip with Luther, we learned so much about dog mushing in Alaska got to play with his dogs and saw how loved all of his dogs are. It was definitely one of the things we will remember for years to come! Next up was snowmobiling with Victoria. She was so fun, she also did a great job reading everyone in the group to make sure the inexperienced people (myself) were comfortable and the experienced thrill seekers (my husband) were safe yet still having fun. Then we finished our experience with Rods doing an overnight ice fishing and aurora viewing experience with Trevor. This was absolutely incredible! Trevor did a great job taking care of us, making sure we knew what to do to catch fish, including the group that came with some younger kids he was patient and great with them, while he was keeping an eye on his aurora app to send us out when the lights were going off, and keeping us fed, warm with coco and tea, and keeping the fire stoked all night. Despite the late hour, the night flew by, the aurora was out dancing a lot of the night, everyone who was trying to catch fish caught fish and it was a night for the memory books for sure. All in all Rods Alaskan Guide Service made for such an incredible trip, so glad we booked with them. All of their staff back at the office were so friendly and helpful, especially the people who helped us get prepared with warm gear, I really appreciated them looking at my gear then telling me keep this, wear this of ours, I was so comfortable for all of our experiences. The bathrooms were also so clean, and the suiting up area was clean and well organized as well.
We had the best time! We’re from Minnesota and frequently ice fish but we wanted to try a different kind of catch and have nothing but good memories from this experience
Great night seeing Aurora and fishing with Trevor. His stories were amazing and he cooked the caught fish to perfection!!
This experience was great. The food was good and the guide was also good. We got to see the northern lights which was awesome.
This experience was our best Aurora viewing experience over a week staying in Fairbanks! Mikey was an awesome guide and took an excellent picture for us with the Aurora in the background. My husband and I each caught 3 fish but others in the group caught up to 10. Mikey’s a great cook and the reindeer sausage + hot chocolate was a plus! The cabin is nice and toasty to give you plenty of opportunity to stay warm in btw light viewing. 5 hours seems like a long time but it was a perfect amount of time! Highly enjoyable experience at a very fair price in my opinion!!
Ice fishing under the northern lights was an amazing time. Mike was an awesome guide and made sure everyone had fun and the best possible experience. Definitely recommend! 10/10 rating. Hope to do it again someday.
Did the ice fishing aurora viewing adventure with Mike. Unfortunately the night didn't produce any lights.. but Mike was very upfront about that when we arrived and checked continuously for us for the off chance they did show. Regardless, it was an amazing time. For a 5 hour excursion.. it felt like a moment. We even stayed past 3am due to the groups connection. Fishing.. sharing stories.. eating excellent fish.. it was one of the best experiences my wife and I could have asked for. Thank you to the father and son that sat across from us and of course you Mike for making our time so enjoyable. We hope Zero had a great time too haha. It was a perfect ending to our Alaskan trip. May all your travels be safe.
Me and my husband were having a blast time last night that we almost forgot about the time. @Mike is awesome for teaching me skill that I was able to catch 4 king salmons. I have to say he did a great job for cooking those fish as well. Even the aurora is a little weak but we really have a fun time with our little 5 people group in the cabin. Nice and cozy. I was told i am lucky to catch a rainbow trout!! So much fun! Thank you for the night!
We had the most incredible night ice fishing and we were fortunate enough to see the Aurora in all her glory! Mike our host was AMAZING!
We had an amazing experience with Mike (and Zero, his dog) as our guides. Mike was wonderful throughout the night. He showed us how to use the rod and reel, kept an eye out for the northern lights, cooked reindeer sausages and some of the fish we caught, and was a great photographer both for the fish we caught and the northern lights. Everyone in our group caught at least one fish. The weather was cooperative and we got lucky to see an amazing display of the northern lights.
Mike was amazing! Well heated and clean cabin. He kept us informed on how to fish and when the northern lights were coming out. 10000% recommend him!
What a fun experience. Riley was awesome. Friendly, helpful and just a really good guy. We enjoyed the ice fishing. There were only 3 of us the evening we were there. We all caught fish, released them then kept a few for Riley to cook for us. He also made reindeer sausage. Really delicious. Afterwards we looked for the auroras. We saw a very faint auroras. Great times. My only problem was the directions although good, I didn’t know where to go once I got there! It was so dark I was afraid to drive fearing I’d get stuck, maybe some lanterns would be helpful to direct people
Trevor is our guide and he is awesome! He had everything ready for us and constantly checking on the room temperature to make sure we are staying in warm. He also very experienced in fishing and give great tips! We also saw the pretty aurora, he went outside to check for us and noticed us right on time! At the end, we rated fresh salmon. Overall, I really enjoyed and recommended Trevor!
We were able to see the light and get 20 something salmons with Mike. He was such a great guide. He made sure we can see the light by constantly checking the light outside and let us know as soon as he saw something. He helped us set up fishing camera that greatly increased the chance of getting some fish. He was also very knowledgeable and skillful at what he does. Great overall experience.
We bought tickets for the ice fishing/aurora watching experience and it was worth all our money! Mike was an amazing host and carried SUPERB energy throughout the entirety of the night (we did the 10pm-3am timeframe). It was truly a wonderful and super fun experience, especially as this was our 1st time visiting. 10/10 would definitely recommend!
Mike was an amazing guide! We saw the northern lights and caught a few fish, which Mike cooked for us. It was an awesome experience!!
Best schedule in alaska so far, Cody is really helpful and whole experience is fun!! Definately come again if travel to alaska again.
Having memorable fishing time with Cody! Highly recommended fishing tour!! We got 5 fishes in total 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Cody is super friendly and patient! Also grill my fish. Very fun experience, will definitely come back and sharpen my fishing skill!
Had a blast at the evening fishing experience. Mike did a great job of allowing us to enjoy our time, be apart of the fishing and step in when needed. The weather did play in our favor, that just means we need to come back.
Cody is a very enthusiastic person. He cooks delicious food and helps us go fishing. When we couldn't catch any fish, they also helped us find the location of the fish. We were very happy on this trip.
We had such a great time ice fishing and seeing the lights! Mike was such a great guide! Very attentive to our needs and making sure we saw the lights! He worked hard from when we got there to when we left. He's very personable and knowledgeable! The accommodations were great, too! This was a great experience for all of us, some experienced with ice fishing, some their very first time! Highly recommended booking with Rod's!
Mike was absolutely phenomenal, so knowledgeable and a great chef as well! We had the best time pulling an all nighter here :)
I didn’t have the fishing experience before. Cody makes the ice fishing fun. He patiently explains and shows how to do it. Besides, he helped whenever we needs. We enjoy not only the fishing but also the free talking. The 4 hour time is fun and not boring. He is pretty good host. We would recommend to everyone who wants trying some ice fishing.
Amazing experience! Cody is so nice, helpful and professional! Good time! Highly recommended must go真的很不错很不错鱼好吃现考的
Nathan was the best guide we could ever ask for. He went above and beyond. You can tell he’s really passionate and loves to share what he does. Don’t book anywhere else!!
Ice fishing had always been a bucket list item that I had wanted to do. In researching the holiday for Alaska, Rods guide service always came up with good reviews. We booked in online and paid and got the confirmation with the location / GPS coordinates. You obliviously need to get there at the designated time and being in the dark, we were a little bit worried getting there. The drive from Fairbanks was about 50 minutes on the Motorway and some snowier "B" roads. We followed the car GPS to Chena lake reserve and found the carpark to the lake. The directions on the booking were excellent and we got there easily. We were met on the lake with our cabin guide. He showed us into our cabin on the frozen, snow covered lake. It seated 16, 4 banks of 4 seats. There was a log fire in the middle. The holes for the fishing were pre drilled and covered. They had all the fishing gear on the walls. We had 6 people in our cabin. We started fishing and it was pretty good to start with and then after 30 minutes the fish stopped biting. We only got 1 fish in our cabin and only 3 in the other cabin. We had a dog sled tour stop into our cabin to warm up. The cabin guide made hot drinks for us when we wanted as well. I was going outside every now and again to check for the northern lights. They eventually came out, but not in there full radiance which was a little disappointing. But that's nature. We still got to see the lights again which was good. We really enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend it.
Tyson made ice fishing so fun and was so super helpful, he was extremely accommodating and toke pictures and videos of the lights and share them with us😊 Thanks for a great experience!
Thank you for the fun fishing trip, Tim! Your guiding was fun! 5 in our party! Fish were caught and your knowledge was great!
Best way to see the Aurora and stay busy while patiently waiting, you will stay warm, have fun fishing, and stay well fed. They had Reindeer sausage on a bun, hot cocoa, bottled water, and your own salmon cooked right there. They will track the aurora for you and tell you when to come out so you don't miss it. One of the Iditarod sleds came to visit us and we were able to pet the dogs, take pictures and see them in action. And very short drive from Fairbanks.
The ice fishing was a very cool experience, and the fish tasted great! The Northern Lights were amazing. Very cool spot! Highly recommend for families with kids of any age.
We enjoyed all parts of this outing. The instructions on how to find the location were spot on. The fish weren't very active the night we came, but we caught 5 fish among the 3 of us. Our guide was very nice and kept things lively. The fish he cooked was very good. The lights did come out which made it all the more successful. My only wish would have been if the reindeer sausages would have come out earlier. But that's on us. We didn't eat before going.
This is really a perfect experience~ It was very cold at night, but Cody kept everything warm. Except for our family, all the partners caught a lot of fish 🤣🤣🤣 . Cody always encouraged us, and occasionally we could hear him singing nice songs, which made us enjoy the fishing process~ The comfortable room, the fireplace, the delicious hotdogs, the coffee and hot cocoa offering at any time, and the enthusiastic, considerate, detailed explanations and thoughtful care of Cody made this trip unforgettable and unique!
Tim was a great fishing guide preparing our lines with bait, giving us suggestions, keeping bait on our line and answering questions about the Aurora and what brought him to Fairbanks. He prepared cooked reindeer sausage in a bun and later cooked the fish that we caught. It was a good experience.
Super fun experience ice fishing and chasing the Aurora! Cody was the perfect guide! He made our experience fun and had a great way of uniting and connecting with all guests! He even seemed to read my daughter’s mind when she wanted hot chocolate!🤣 My kids loved CATCHING fish while ICE fishing in ALASKA! So cool to chill with a musher who stopped by on their guided tour and visit with the dogs! Rod’s works with such friendly people! Highly recommend this experience! Especially if your guide is Cody! He had all the time in the world for us and just made our experience so complete and memorable.
We did the Aurora Borealis viewing and ice fishing. Unfortunately the sky was too overcast to see the Northern Lights, but we had a wonderful time fishing! Cody made the experience amazing! Very friendly and knowledgeable about the everything Alaska. Thanks Cody!
